(A)rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself. After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, (B)“Lord, are You washing my feet?”

Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing you (C)do not understand now, (D)but you will know after this.”

Peter said to Him, “You shall never wash my feet!”

Jesus answered him, (E)“If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.”

Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!”

10 Jesus said to him, “He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and (F)you are clean, but not all of you.” 11 For (G)He knew who would betray Him; therefore He said, “You are not all clean.”

12 So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, “Do you [a]know what I have done to you? 13 (H)You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. 14 (I)If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, (J)you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For (K)I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.

so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist.(A) After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet,(B) drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”

Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”(C)

“No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.”

Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”

“Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!”

10 Jesus answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean,(D) though not every one of you.”(E) 11 For he knew who was going to betray him,(F) and that was why he said not every one was clean.

12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. 13 “You call me ‘Teacher’(G) and ‘Lord,’(H) and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.(I) 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.(J)
