4 (A)In him was life,[a] and (B)the life was the light of men. 5 (C)The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
6 There was a man (D)sent from God, whose name was (E)John. 7 He came as a (F)witness, to bear witness about the light, (G)that all might believe through him. 8 (H)He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.
9 (I)The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.

6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John.(E) 7 He came as a witness to testify(F) concerning that light, so that through him all might believe.(G) 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.
9 The true light(H) that gives light to everyone(I) was coming into the world.
