4 (A)In Him was life, and (B)the life was the light of men. 5 And (C)the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not [a]comprehend it.

6 There was a (D)man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 This man came for a (E)witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might (F)believe. 8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that (G)Light. 9 (H)That[b] was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.

New International Version
4 In him was life,(A) and that life was the light(B) of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness,(C) and the darkness has not overcome[a] it.(D)
6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John.(E) 7 He came as a witness to testify(F) concerning that light, so that through him all might believe.(G) 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.
9 The true light(H) that gives light to everyone(I) was coming into the world.
