16 And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.
17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
18 No man hath seen God at any time, the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.
19 And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou?
20 And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ.

16 Out of his fullness(A) we have all received grace(B) in place of grace already given. 17 For the law was given through Moses;(C) grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.(D) 18 No one has ever seen God,(E) but the one and only Son, who is himself God and[a](F) is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.
John the Baptist Denies Being the Messiah
19 Now this was John’s(G) testimony when the Jewish leaders[b](H) in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. 20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, “I am not the Messiah.”(I)
