The Nations Judged

⁴ “Now what have you against me, Tyre and Sidon^(I) and all you regions of Philistia?^(J) Are you repaying me for something I have done? If you are paying me back, I will swiftly and speedily return on your own heads what you have done.^{(K) 5} For you took my silver and my gold and carried off my finest treasures to your temples.^{[c](L) 6} You sold the people of Judah and Jerusalem to the Greeks,^(M) that you might send them far from their homeland.

⁷ “See, I am going to rouse them out of the places to which you sold them,^(N) and I will return^(O) on your own heads what you have done. ⁸ I will sell your sons^(P) and daughters to the people of Judah,^(Q) and they will sell them to the Sabeans,^(R) a nation far away.” The Lord has spoken.^(S)

Blessings for God’s People

The Lord’s Great Victory Over the Nations

38 The word of the Lord came to me: ² “Son of man, set your face against Gog,^(A) of the land of Magog,^(B) the chief prince of^[a] Meshek and Tubal;^(C) prophesy against him ³ and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against you, Gog, chief prince of^[b] Meshek and Tubal.^{(D) 4} I will turn you around, put hooks^(E) in your jaws and bring you out with your whole army—your horses, your horsemen fully armed, and a great horde with large and small shields, all of them brandishing their swords.^{(F) 5} Persia, Cush^[c](G) and Put^(H) will be with them, all with shields and helmets, ⁶ also Gomer^(I) with all its troops, and Beth Togarmah^(J) from the far north^(K) with all its troops—the many nations with you.

⁷ “‘Get ready; be prepared,^(L) you and all the hordes gathered about you, and take command of them. ⁸ After many days^(M) you will be called to arms. In future years you will invade a land that has recovered from war, whose people were gathered from many nations^(N) to the mountains of Israel, which had long been desolate. They had been brought out from the nations, and now all of them live in safety.^{(O) 9} You and all your troops and the many nations with you will go up, advancing like a storm;^(P) you will be like a cloud^(Q) covering the land.^(R)

¹⁰ “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: On that day thoughts will come into your mind^(S) and you will devise an evil scheme.^{(T) 11} You will say, “I will invade a land of unwalled villages; I will attack a peaceful and unsuspecting people^(U)—all of them living without walls and without gates and bars.^{(V) 12} I will plunder and loot and turn my hand against the resettled ruins and the people gathered from the nations, rich in livestock and goods, living at the center of the land.^[d]” ¹³ Sheba^(W) and Dedan^(X) and the merchants of Tarshish^(Y) and all her villages^[e] will say to you, “Have you come to plunder? Have you gathered your hordes to loot, to carry off silver and gold, to take away livestock and goods and to seize much plunder?^(Z)”’

¹⁴ “Therefore, son of man, prophesy and say to Gog: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: In that day, when my people Israel are living in safety,^(AA) will you not take notice of it? ¹⁵ You will come from your place in the far north,^(AB) you and many nations with you, all of them riding on horses, a great horde, a mighty army.^{(AC) 16} You will advance against my people Israel like a cloud^(AD) that covers the land.^(AE) In days to come, Gog, I will bring you against my land, so that the nations may know me when I am proved holy^(AF) through you before their eyes.^(AG)

¹⁷ “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: You are the one I spoke of in former days by my servants the prophets of Israel. At that time they prophesied for years that I would bring you against them. ¹⁸ This is what will happen in that day: When Gog attacks the land of Israel, my hot anger will be aroused, declares the Sovereign Lord. ¹⁹ In my zeal and fiery wrath I declare that at that time there shall be a great earthquake^(AH) in the land of Israel.^{(AI) 20} The fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the beasts of the field, every creature that moves along the ground, and all the people on the face of the earth will tremble^(AJ) at my presence. The mountains will be overturned,^(AK) the cliffs will crumble^(AL) and every wall will fall to the ground.^{(AM) 21} I will summon a sword^(AN) against Gog on all my mountains, declares the Sovereign Lord. Every man’s sword will be against his brother.^{(AO) 22} I will execute judgment^(AP) on him with plague and bloodshed;^(AQ) I will pour down torrents of rain, hailstones^(AR) and burning sulfur^(AS) on him and on his troops and on the many nations with him.^{(AT) 23} And so I will show my greatness and my holiness, and I will make myself known in the sight of many nations. Then they will know that I am the Lord.^(AU)’

39 “Son of man, prophesy against Gog^(AV) and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against you, Gog, chief prince of^[f] Meshek^(AW) and Tubal.^{(AX) 2} I will turn you around and drag you along. I will bring you from the far north^(AY) and send you against the mountains of Israel.^{(AZ) 3} Then I will strike your bow^(BA) from your left hand and make your arrows^(BB) drop from your right hand. ⁴ On the mountains of Israel you will fall, you and all your troops and the nations with you. I will give you as food to all kinds of carrion birds^(BC) and to the wild animals.^{(BD) 5} You will fall in the open field, for I have spoken, declares the Sovereign Lord.^{(BE) 6} I will send fire^(BF) on Magog^(BG) and on those who live in safety in the coastlands,^(BH) and they will know^(BI) that I am the Lord.

⁷ “‘I will make known my holy name among my people Israel. I will no longer let my holy name be profaned,^(BJ) and the nations will know^(BK) that I the Lord am the Holy One in Israel.^{(BL) 8} It is coming! It will surely take place, declares the Sovereign Lord. This is the day^(BM) I have spoken of.

⁹ “‘Then those who live in the towns of Israel will go out and use the weapons for fuel and burn them up—the small and large shields, the bows and arrows,^(BN) the war clubs and spears. For seven years they will use them for fuel.^{(BO) 10} They will not need to gather wood from the fields or cut it from the forests, because they will use the weapons for fuel. And they will plunder^(BP) those who plundered them and loot those who looted them, declares the Sovereign Lord.^(BQ)

¹¹ “‘On that day I will give Gog a burial place in Israel, in the valley of those who travel east of the Sea. It will block the way of travelers, because Gog and all his hordes will be buried^(BR) there. So it will be called the Valley of Hamon Gog.^[g](BS)

¹² “‘For seven months the Israelites will be burying them in order to cleanse the land.^{(BT) 13} All the people of the land will bury them, and the day I display my glory^(BU) will be a memorable day for them, declares the Sovereign Lord. ¹⁴ People will be continually employed in cleansing the land. They will spread out across the land and, along with others, they will bury any bodies that are lying on the ground.

“‘After the seven months they will carry out a more detailed search. ¹⁵ As they go through the land, anyone who sees a human bone will leave a marker beside it until the gravediggers bury it in the Valley of Hamon Gog, ¹⁶ near a town called Hamonah.^[h] And so they will cleanse the land.’

¹⁷ “Son of man, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Call out to every kind of bird^(BV) and all the wild animals: ‘Assemble and come together from all around to the sacrifice I am preparing for you, the great sacrifice on the mountains of Israel. There you will eat flesh and drink blood.^{(BW) 18} You will eat the flesh of mighty men and drink the blood of the princes of the earth as if they were rams and lambs, goats and bulls—all of them fattened animals from Bashan.^{(BX) 19} At the sacrifice^(BY) I am preparing for you, you will eat fat till you are glutted and drink blood till you are drunk. ²⁰ At my table you will eat your fill of horses and riders, mighty men and soldiers of every kind,’ declares the Sovereign Lord.^(BZ)

²¹ “I will display my glory among the nations, and all the nations will see the punishment I inflict and the hand I lay on them.^{(CA) 22} From that day forward the people of Israel will know that I am the Lord their God. ²³ And the nations will know that the people of Israel went into exile for their sin, because they were unfaithful to me. So I hid my face from them and handed them over to their enemies, and they all fell by the sword.^{(CB) 24} I dealt with them according to their uncleanness and their offenses, and I hid my face from them.^(CC)

²⁵ “Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will now restore the fortunes of Jacob^[i](CD) and will have compassion^(CE) on all the people of Israel, and I will be zealous for my holy name.^{(CF) 26} They will forget their shame and all the unfaithfulness they showed toward me when they lived in safety^(CG) in their land with no one to make them afraid.^{(CH) 27} When I have brought them back from the nations and have gathered them from the countries of their enemies, I will be proved holy through them in the sight of many nations.^{(CI) 28} Then they will know that I am the Lord their God, for though I sent them into exile among the nations, I will gather them^(CJ) to their own land, not leaving any behind.^{(CK) 29} I will no longer hide my face^(CL) from them, for I will pour out my Spirit^(CM) on the people of Israel, declares the Sovereign Lord.^(CN)”

The River From the Temple

47 The man brought me back to the entrance to the temple, and I saw water^(A) coming out from under the threshold of the temple toward the east (for the temple faced east). The water was coming down from under the south side of the temple, south of the altar.^{(B) 2} He then brought me out through the north gate^(C) and led me around the outside to the outer gate facing east, and the water was trickling from the south side.

³ As the man went eastward with a measuring line^(D) in his hand, he measured off a thousand cubits^[a] and then led me through water that was ankle-deep. ⁴ He measured off another thousand cubits and led me through water that was knee-deep. He measured off another thousand and led me through water that was up to the waist. ⁵ He measured off another thousand, but now it was a river^(E) that I could not cross, because the water had risen and was deep enough to swim in—a river that no one could cross.^{(F) 6} He asked me, “Son of man, do you see this?”

Then he led me back to the bank of the river. ⁷ When I arrived there, I saw a great number of trees on each side of the river.^{(G) 8} He said to me, “This water flows toward the eastern region and goes down into the Arabah,^[b](H) where it enters the Dead Sea. When it empties into the sea, the salty water there becomes fresh.^{(I) 9} Swarms of living creatures will live wherever the river flows. There will be large numbers of fish, because this water flows there and makes the salt water fresh; so where the river flows everything will live.^{(J) 10} Fishermen^(K) will stand along the shore; from En Gedi^(L) to En Eglaim there will be places for spreading nets.^(M) The fish will be of many kinds^(N)—like the fish of the Mediterranean Sea.^{(O) 11} But the swamps and marshes will not become fresh; they will be left for salt.^{(P) 12} Fruit trees of all kinds will grow on both banks of the river.^(Q) Their leaves will not wither, nor will their fruit^(R) fail. Every month they will bear fruit, because the water from the sanctuary^(S) flows to them. Their fruit will serve for food and their leaves for healing.^(T)”

The Boundaries of the Land

¹³ This is what the Sovereign Lord says: “These are the boundaries^(U) of the land that you will divide among the twelve tribes of Israel as their inheritance, with two portions for Joseph.^{(V) 14} You are to divide it equally among them. Because I swore with uplifted hand to give it to your ancestors, this land will become your inheritance.^(W)

¹⁵ “This is to be the boundary of the land:^(X)

²¹ “You are to distribute this land among yourselves according to the tribes of Israel. ²² You are to allot it as an inheritance^(AJ) for yourselves and for the foreigners^(AK) residing among you and who have children. You are to consider them as native-born Israelites; along with you they are to be allotted an inheritance among the tribes of Israel.^{(AL) 23} In whatever tribe a foreigner resides, there you are to give them their inheritance,” declares the Sovereign Lord.^(AM)

Jerusalem’s Enemies to Be Destroyed

12 A prophecy:^(A) The word of the Lord concerning Israel.

The Lord, who stretches out the heavens,^(B) who lays the foundation of the earth,^(C) and who forms the human spirit within a person,^(D) declares: ² “I am going to make Jerusalem a cup^(E) that sends all the surrounding peoples reeling.^(F) Judah^(G) will be besieged as well as Jerusalem. ³ On that day, when all the nations^(H) of the earth are gathered against her, I will make Jerusalem an immovable rock^(I) for all the nations. All who try to move it will injure^(J) themselves. ⁴ On that day I will strike every horse with panic and its rider with madness,” declares the Lord. “I will keep a watchful eye over Judah, but I will blind all the horses of the nations.^{(K) 5} Then the clans of Judah will say in their hearts, ‘The people of Jerusalem are strong,^(L) because the Lord Almighty is their God.’

⁶ “On that day I will make the clans of Judah like a firepot^(M) in a woodpile, like a flaming torch among sheaves. They will consume^(N) all the surrounding peoples right and left, but Jerusalem will remain intact^(O) in her place.

⁷ “The Lord will save the dwellings of Judah first, so that the honor of the house of David and of Jerusalem’s inhabitants may not be greater than that of Judah.^{(P) 8} On that day the Lord will shield^(Q) those who live in Jerusalem, so that the feeblest^(R) among them will be like David, and the house of David will be like God,^(S) like the angel of the Lord going before^(T) them. ⁹ On that day I will set out to destroy all the nations^(U) that attack Jerusalem.^(V)

Mourning for the One They Pierced

¹⁰ “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit^[a](W) of grace and supplication.^(X) They will look on^[b] me, the one they have pierced,^(Y) and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child,^(Z) and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son.^{(AA) 11} On that day the weeping^(AB) in Jerusalem will be as great as the weeping of Hadad Rimmon in the plain of Megiddo.^{(AC) 12} The land will mourn,^(AD) each clan by itself, with their wives by themselves: the clan of the house of David and their wives, the clan of the house of Nathan and their wives, ¹³ the clan of the house of Levi and their wives, the clan of Shimei and their wives, ¹⁴ and all the rest of the clans and their wives.^(AE)

Cleansing From Sin

13 “On that day a fountain^(AF) will be opened to the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse^(AG) them from sin and impurity.

² “On that day, I will banish the names of the idols^(AH) from the land, and they will be remembered no more,”^(AI) declares the Lord Almighty. “I will remove both the prophets^(AJ) and the spirit of impurity from the land. ³ And if anyone still prophesies, their father and mother, to whom they were born, will say to them, ‘You must die, because you have told lies^(AK) in the Lord’s name.’ Then their own parents will stab the one who prophesies.^(AL)

⁴ “On that day every prophet will be ashamed^(AM) of their prophetic vision. They will not put on a prophet’s garment^(AN) of hair^(AO) in order to deceive.^{(AP) 5} Each will say, ‘I am not a prophet. I am a farmer; the land has been my livelihood since my youth.^[c]’^{(AQ) 6} If someone asks, ‘What are these wounds on your body^[d]?’ they will answer, ‘The wounds I was given at the house of my friends.’

The Lord Comes and Reigns

14 A day of the Lord^(BD) is coming, Jerusalem, when your possessions^(BE) will be plundered and divided up within your very walls.

² I will gather all the nations^(BF) to Jerusalem to fight against it;^(BG) the city will be captured, the houses ransacked, and the women raped.^(BH) Half of the city will go into exile, but the rest of the people will not be taken from the city.^{(BI) 3} Then the Lord will go out and fight^(BJ) against those nations, as he fights on a day of battle.^{(BK) 4} On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives,^(BL) east of Jerusalem, and the Mount of Olives will be split^(BM) in two from east to west, forming a great valley, with half of the mountain moving north and half moving south. ⁵ You will flee by my mountain valley, for it will extend to Azel. You will flee as you fled from the earthquake^[e](BN) in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Then the Lord my God will come,^(BO) and all the holy ones with him.^(BP)

⁶ On that day there will be neither sunlight^(BQ) nor cold, frosty darkness. ⁷ It will be a unique^(BR) day—a day known only to the Lord—with no distinction between day and night.^(BS) When evening comes, there will be light.^(BT)

⁸ On that day living water^(BU) will flow^(BV) out from Jerusalem, half of it east^(BW) to the Dead Sea and half of it west to the Mediterranean Sea, in summer and in winter.^(BX)

⁹ The Lord will be king^(BY) over the whole earth.^(BZ) On that day there will be one Lord, and his name the only name.^(CA)

¹⁰ The whole land, from Geba^(CB) to Rimmon,^(CC) south of Jerusalem, will become like the Arabah. But Jerusalem will be raised up^(CD) high from the Benjamin Gate^(CE) to the site of the First Gate, to the Corner Gate,^(CF) and from the Tower of Hananel^(CG) to the royal winepresses, and will remain in its place.^{(CH) 11} It will be inhabited;^(CI) never again will it be destroyed. Jerusalem will be secure.^(CJ)

¹² This is the plague with which the Lord will strike^(CK) all the nations that fought against Jerusalem: Their flesh will rot while they are still standing on their feet, their eyes will rot in their sockets, and their tongues will rot in their mouths.^{(CL) 13} On that day people will be stricken by the Lord with great panic.^(CM) They will seize each other by the hand and attack one another.^{(CN) 14} Judah^(CO) too will fight at Jerusalem. The wealth of all the surrounding nations will be collected^(CP)—great quantities of gold and silver and clothing. ¹⁵ A similar plague^(CQ) will strike the horses and mules, the camels and donkeys, and all the animals in those camps.

¹⁶ Then the survivors^(CR) from all the nations that have attacked Jerusalem will go up year after year to worship^(CS) the King,^(CT) the Lord Almighty, and to celebrate the Festival of Tabernacles.^{(CU) 17} If any of the peoples of the earth do not go up to Jerusalem to worship^(CV) the King, the Lord Almighty, they will have no rain.^{(CW) 18} If the Egyptian people do not go up and take part, they will have no rain. The Lord^[f] will bring on them the plague^(CX) he inflicts on the nations that do not go up to celebrate the Festival of Tabernacles.^{(CY) 19} This will be the punishment of Egypt and the punishment of all the nations that do not go up to celebrate the Festival of Tabernacles.^(CZ)

²⁰ On that day holy to the Lord^(DA) will be inscribed on the bells of the horses, and the cooking pots^(DB) in the Lord’s house will be like the sacred bowls^(DC) in front of the altar. ²¹ Every pot in Jerusalem and Judah will be holy^(DD) to the Lord Almighty, and all who come to sacrifice will take some of the pots and cook in them. And on that day^(DE) there will no longer be a Canaanite^[g](DF) in the house^(DG) of the Lord Almighty.^(DH)

⁷ Now when they have finished their testimony, the beast^(A) that comes up from the Abyss^(B) will attack them,^(C) and overpower and kill them. ⁸ Their bodies will lie in the public square of the great city^(D)—which is figuratively called Sodom^(E) and Egypt—where also their Lord was crucified.^{(F) 9} For three and a half days some from every people, tribe, language and nation^(G) will gaze on their bodies and refuse them burial.^{(H) 10} The inhabitants of the earth^(I) will gloat over them and will celebrate by sending each other gifts,^(J) because these two prophets had tormented those who live on the earth.

¹¹ But after the three and a half days^(K) the breath^[a] of life from God entered them,^(L) and they stood on their feet, and terror struck those who saw them. ¹² Then they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, “Come up here.”^(M) And they went up to heaven in a cloud,^(N) while their enemies looked on.

¹³ At that very hour there was a severe earthquake^(O) and a tenth of the city collapsed. Seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the survivors were terrified and gave glory^(P) to the God of heaven.^(Q)

³⁹ For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’^[a]”^(A)

²⁹ “Immediately after the distress of those days
