2 Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the Lord cometh, for it is nigh at hand;
2 A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains: a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations.
3 A fire devoureth before them; and behind them a flame burneth: the land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; yea, and nothing shall escape them.
4 The appearance of them is as the appearance of horses; and as horsemen, so shall they run.
5 Like the noise of chariots on the tops of mountains shall they leap, like the noise of a flame of fire that devoureth the stubble, as a strong people set in battle array.
6 Before their face the people shall be much pained: all faces shall gather blackness.
7 They shall run like mighty men; they shall climb the wall like men of war; and they shall march every one on his ways, and they shall not break their ranks:
8 Neither shall one thrust another; they shall walk every one in his path: and when they fall upon the sword, they shall not be wounded.
9 They shall run to and fro in the city; they shall run upon the wall, they shall climb up upon the houses; they shall enter in at the windows like a thief.
10 The earth shall quake before them; the heavens shall tremble: the sun and the moon shall be dark, and the stars shall withdraw their shining:
11 And the Lord shall utter his voice before his army: for his camp is very great: for he is strong that executeth his word: for the day of the Lord is great and very terrible; and who can abide it?
12 Therefore also now, saith the Lord, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning:
13 And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the Lord your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil.
14 Who knoweth if he will return and repent, and leave a blessing behind him; even a meat offering and a drink offering unto the Lord your God?
15 Blow the trumpet in Zion, sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly:
16 Gather the people, sanctify the congregation, assemble the elders, gather the children, and those that suck the breasts: let the bridegroom go forth of his chamber, and the bride out of her closet.
17 Let the priests, the ministers of the Lord, weep between the porch and the altar, and let them say, Spare thy people, O Lord, and give not thine heritage to reproach, that the heathen should rule over them: wherefore should they say among the people, Where is their God?
18 Then will the Lord be jealous for his land, and pity his people.
19 Yea, the Lord will answer and say unto his people, Behold, I will send you corn, and wine, and oil, and ye shall be satisfied therewith: and I will no more make you a reproach among the heathen:
20 But I will remove far off from you the northern army, and will drive him into a land barren and desolate, with his face toward the east sea, and his hinder part toward the utmost sea, and his stink shall come up, and his ill savour shall come up, because he hath done great things.
21 Fear not, O land; be glad and rejoice: for the Lord will do great things.
22 Be not afraid, ye beasts of the field: for the pastures of the wilderness do spring, for the tree beareth her fruit, the fig tree and the vine do yield their strength.
23 Be glad then, ye children of Zion, and rejoice in the Lord your God: for he hath given you the former rain moderately, and he will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain in the first month.
24 And the floors shall be full of wheat, and the vats shall overflow with wine and oil.
25 And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpiller, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you.
26 And ye shall eat in plenty, and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord your God, that hath dealt wondrously with you: and my people shall never be ashamed.
27 And ye shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I am the Lord your God, and none else: and my people shall never be ashamed.
28 And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:
29 And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.
30 And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.
31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord come.
32 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the Lord hath said, and in the remnant whom the Lord shall call.
3 For, behold, in those days, and in that time, when I shall bring again the captivity of Judah and Jerusalem,
2 I will also gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and will plead with them there for my people and for my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and parted my land.
3 And they have cast lots for my people; and have given a boy for an harlot, and sold a girl for wine, that they might drink.
4 Yea, and what have ye to do with me, O Tyre, and Zidon, and all the coasts of Palestine? will ye render me a recompence? and if ye recompense me, swiftly and speedily will I return your recompence upon your own head;
5 Because ye have taken my silver and my gold, and have carried into your temples my goodly pleasant things:
6 The children also of Judah and the children of Jerusalem have ye sold unto the Grecians, that ye might remove them far from their border.
7 Behold, I will raise them out of the place whither ye have sold them, and will return your recompence upon your own head:
8 And I will sell your sons and your daughters into the hand of the children of Judah, and they shall sell them to the Sabeans, to a people far off: for the Lord hath spoken it.
9 Proclaim ye this among the Gentiles; Prepare war, wake up the mighty men, let all the men of war draw near; let them come up:
10 Beat your plowshares into swords and your pruninghooks into spears: let the weak say, I am strong.
11 Assemble yourselves, and come, all ye heathen, and gather yourselves together round about: thither cause thy mighty ones to come down, O Lord.
12 Let the heathen be wakened, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat: for there will I sit to judge all the heathen round about.
13 Put ye in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe: come, get you down; for the press is full, the fats overflow; for their wickedness is great.
14 Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision: for the day of the Lord is near in the valley of decision.
15 The sun and the moon shall be darkened, and the stars shall withdraw their shining.
16 The Lord also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the Lord will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel.
17 So shall ye know that I am the Lord your God dwelling in Zion, my holy mountain: then shall Jerusalem be holy, and there shall no strangers pass through her any more.
18 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the mountains shall drop down new wine, and the hills shall flow with milk, and all the rivers of Judah shall flow with waters, and a fountain shall come forth out of the house of the Lord, and shall water the valley of Shittim.
19 Egypt shall be a desolation, and Edom shall be a desolate wilderness, for the violence against the children of Judah, because they have shed innocent blood in their land.
20 But Judah shall dwell for ever, and Jerusalem from generation to generation.
21 For I will cleanse their blood that I have not cleansed: for the Lord dwelleth in Zion.
1 The words of Amos, who was among the herdmen of Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel, two years before the earthquake.
2 And he said, The Lord will roar from Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the habitations of the shepherds shall mourn, and the top of Carmel shall wither.
3 Thus saith the Lord; For three transgressions of Damascus, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have threshed Gilead with threshing instruments of iron:
4 But I will send a fire into the house of Hazael, which shall devour the palaces of Benhadad.
5 I will break also the bar of Damascus, and cut off the inhabitant from the plain of Aven, and him that holdeth the sceptre from the house of Eden: and the people of Syria shall go into captivity unto Kir, saith the Lord.
6 Thus saith the Lord; For three transgressions of Gaza, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they carried away captive the whole captivity, to deliver them up to Edom:
7 But I will send a fire on the wall of Gaza, which shall devour the palaces thereof:
8 And I will cut off the inhabitant from Ashdod, and him that holdeth the sceptre from Ashkelon, and I will turn mine hand against Ekron: and the remnant of the Philistines shall perish, saith the Lord God.
9 Thus saith the Lord; For three transgressions of Tyrus, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they delivered up the whole captivity to Edom, and remembered not the brotherly covenant:
10 But I will send a fire on the wall of Tyrus, which shall devour the palaces thereof.
11 Thus saith the Lord; For three transgressions of Edom, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because he did pursue his brother with the sword, and did cast off all pity, and his anger did tear perpetually, and he kept his wrath for ever:
12 But I will send a fire upon Teman, which shall devour the palaces of Bozrah.
13 Thus saith the Lord; For three transgressions of the children of Ammon, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have ripped up the women with child of Gilead, that they might enlarge their border:
14 But I will kindle a fire in the wall of Rabbah, and it shall devour the palaces thereof, with shouting in the day of battle, with a tempest in the day of the whirlwind:
15 And their king shall go into captivity, he and his princes together, saith the Lord.
2 Thus saith the Lord; For three transgressions of Moab, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because he burned the bones of the king of Edom into lime:
2 But I will send a fire upon Moab, and it shall devour the palaces of Kirioth: and Moab shall die with tumult, with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet:
3 And I will cut off the judge from the midst thereof, and will slay all the princes thereof with him, saith the Lord.
4 Thus saith the Lord; For three transgressions of Judah, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have despised the law of the Lord, and have not kept his commandments, and their lies caused them to err, after the which their fathers have walked:
5 But I will send a fire upon Judah, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem.
6 Thus saith the Lord; For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they sold the righteous for silver, and the poor for a pair of shoes;
7 That pant after the dust of the earth on the head of the poor, and turn aside the way of the meek: and a man and his father will go in unto the same maid, to profane my holy name:
8 And they lay themselves down upon clothes laid to pledge by every altar, and they drink the wine of the condemned in the house of their god.
9 Yet destroyed I the Amorite before them, whose height was like the height of the cedars, and he was strong as the oaks; yet I destroyed his fruit from above, and his roots from beneath.
10 Also I brought you up from the land of Egypt, and led you forty years through the wilderness, to possess the land of the Amorite.
11 And I raised up of your sons for prophets, and of your young men for Nazarites. Is it not even thus, O ye children of Israel? saith the Lord.
12 But ye gave the Nazarites wine to drink; and commanded the prophets, saying, Prophesy not.
13 Behold, I am pressed under you, as a cart is pressed that is full of sheaves.
14 Therefore the flight shall perish from the swift, and the strong shall not strengthen his force, neither shall the mighty deliver himself:
15 Neither shall he stand that handleth the bow; and he that is swift of foot shall not deliver himself: neither shall he that rideth the horse deliver himself.
16 And he that is courageous among the mighty shall flee away naked in that day, saith the Lord.

An Army of Locusts
Let all who live in the land tremble,
for the day of the Lord(D) is coming.
It is close at hand(E)—
2 a day of darkness(F) and gloom,(G)
a day of clouds(H) and blackness.(I)
Like dawn spreading across the mountains
a large and mighty army(J) comes,
such as never was in ancient times(K)
nor ever will be in ages to come.
3 Before them fire(L) devours,
behind them a flame blazes.
Before them the land is like the garden of Eden,(M)
behind them, a desert waste(N)—
nothing escapes them.
4 They have the appearance of horses;(O)
they gallop along like cavalry.
5 With a noise like that of chariots(P)
they leap over the mountaintops,
like a crackling fire(Q) consuming stubble,
like a mighty army drawn up for battle.
6 At the sight of them, nations are in anguish;(R)
every face turns pale.(S)
7 They charge like warriors;(T)
they scale walls like soldiers.
They all march in line,(U)
not swerving(V) from their course.
8 They do not jostle each other;
each marches straight ahead.
They plunge through defenses
without breaking ranks.
9 They rush upon the city;
they run along the wall.
They climb into the houses;(W)
like thieves they enter through the windows.(X)
10 Before them the earth shakes,(Y)
the heavens tremble,(Z)
the sun and moon are darkened,(AA)
and the stars no longer shine.(AB)
11 The Lord(AC) thunders(AD)
at the head of his army;(AE)
his forces are beyond number,
and mighty is the army that obeys his command.
The day of the Lord is great;(AF)
it is dreadful.
Who can endure it?(AG)
Rend Your Heart
12 “Even now,” declares the Lord,
“return(AH) to me with all your heart,(AI)
with fasting and weeping and mourning.”
13 Rend your heart(AJ)
and not your garments.(AK)
Return(AL) to the Lord your God,
for he is gracious and compassionate,(AM)
slow to anger and abounding in love,(AN)
and he relents from sending calamity.(AO)
14 Who knows? He may turn(AP) and relent(AQ)
and leave behind a blessing(AR)—
grain offerings and drink offerings(AS)
for the Lord your God.
15 Blow the trumpet(AT) in Zion,(AU)
declare a holy fast,(AV)
call a sacred assembly.(AW)
16 Gather the people,
consecrate(AX) the assembly;
bring together the elders,(AY)
gather the children,
those nursing at the breast.
Let the bridegroom(AZ) leave his room
and the bride her chamber.
17 Let the priests, who minister(BA) before the Lord,
weep(BB) between the portico and the altar.(BC)
Let them say, “Spare your people, Lord.
Do not make your inheritance an object of scorn,(BD)
a byword(BE) among the nations.
Why should they say among the peoples,
‘Where is their God?(BF)’”
The Lord’s Answer
19 The Lord replied[a] to them:
“I am sending you grain, new wine(BI) and olive oil,(BJ)
enough to satisfy you fully;(BK)
never again will I make you
an object of scorn(BL) to the nations.
20 “I will drive the northern horde(BM) far from you,
pushing it into a parched and barren land;
its eastern ranks will drown in the Dead Sea
and its western ranks in the Mediterranean Sea.
And its stench(BN) will go up;
its smell will rise.”
Surely he has done great things!
21 Do not be afraid,(BO) land of Judah;
be glad and rejoice.(BP)
Surely the Lord has done great things!(BQ)
22 Do not be afraid, you wild animals,
for the pastures in the wilderness are becoming green.(BR)
The trees are bearing their fruit;
the fig tree(BS) and the vine(BT) yield their riches.(BU)
23 Be glad, people of Zion,
rejoice(BV) in the Lord your God,
for he has given you the autumn rains
because he is faithful.(BW)
He sends you abundant showers,(BX)
both autumn(BY) and spring rains,(BZ) as before.
24 The threshing floors will be filled with grain;
the vats will overflow(CA) with new wine(CB) and oil.
25 “I will repay you for the years the locusts(CC) have eaten(CD)—
the great locust and the young locust,
the other locusts and the locust swarm[b]—
my great army(CE) that I sent among you.
26 You will have plenty to eat, until you are full,(CF)
and you will praise(CG) the name of the Lord your God,
who has worked wonders(CH) for you;
never again will my people be shamed.(CI)
27 Then you will know(CJ) that I am in Israel,
that I am the Lord(CK) your God,
and that there is no other;
never again will my people be shamed.(CL)
The Day of the Lord
28 “And afterward,
I will pour out my Spirit(CM) on all people.(CN)
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,(CO)
your old men will dream dreams,(CP)
your young men will see visions.
29 Even on my servants,(CQ) both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days.(CR)
30 I will show wonders in the heavens(CS)
and on the earth,(CT)
blood and fire and billows of smoke.
31 The sun will be turned to darkness(CU)
and the moon to blood
before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.(CV)
32 And everyone who calls
on the name of the Lord(CW) will be saved;(CX)
for on Mount Zion(CY) and in Jerusalem
there will be deliverance,(CZ)
as the Lord has said,
even among the survivors(DA)
whom the Lord calls.[c](DB)
The Nations Judged
3 [d]“In those days and at that time,
when I restore the fortunes(DC) of Judah(DD) and Jerusalem,
2 I will gather(DE) all nations
and bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat.[e](DF)
There I will put them on trial(DG)
for what they did to my inheritance, my people Israel,
because they scattered(DH) my people among the nations
and divided up my land.
3 They cast lots(DI) for my people
and traded boys for prostitutes;
they sold girls for wine(DJ) to drink.
4 “Now what have you against me, Tyre and Sidon(DK) and all you regions of Philistia?(DL) Are you repaying me for something I have done? If you are paying me back, I will swiftly and speedily return on your own heads what you have done.(DM) 5 For you took my silver and my gold and carried off my finest treasures to your temples.[f](DN) 6 You sold the people of Judah and Jerusalem to the Greeks,(DO) that you might send them far from their homeland.
7 “See, I am going to rouse them out of the places to which you sold them,(DP) and I will return(DQ) on your own heads what you have done. 8 I will sell your sons(DR) and daughters to the people of Judah,(DS) and they will sell them to the Sabeans,(DT) a nation far away.” The Lord has spoken.(DU)
9 Proclaim this among the nations:
Prepare for war!(DV)
Rouse the warriors!(DW)
Let all the fighting men draw near and attack.
10 Beat your plowshares into swords
and your pruning hooks(DX) into spears.(DY)
Let the weakling(DZ) say,
“I am strong!”(EA)
11 Come quickly, all you nations from every side,
and assemble(EB) there.
Bring down your warriors,(EC) Lord!
12 “Let the nations be roused;
let them advance into the Valley of Jehoshaphat,(ED)
for there I will sit
to judge(EE) all the nations on every side.
13 Swing the sickle,(EF)
for the harvest(EG) is ripe.
Come, trample the grapes,(EH)
for the winepress(EI) is full
and the vats overflow—
so great is their wickedness!”
14 Multitudes,(EJ) multitudes
in the valley(EK) of decision!
For the day of the Lord(EL) is near
in the valley of decision.(EM)
15 The sun and moon will be darkened,
and the stars no longer shine.(EN)
16 The Lord will roar(EO) from Zion
and thunder from Jerusalem;(EP)
the earth and the heavens will tremble.(EQ)
But the Lord will be a refuge(ER) for his people,
a stronghold(ES) for the people of Israel.
Blessings for God’s People
17 “Then you will know(ET) that I, the Lord your God,(EU)
dwell in Zion,(EV) my holy hill.(EW)
Jerusalem will be holy;(EX)
never again will foreigners invade her.(EY)
18 “In that day the mountains will drip new wine,(EZ)
and the hills will flow with milk;(FA)
all the ravines of Judah will run with water.(FB)
A fountain will flow out of the Lord’s house(FC)
and will water the valley of acacias.[g](FD)
19 But Egypt(FE) will be desolate,
Edom(FF) a desert waste,
because of violence(FG) done to the people of Judah,
in whose land they shed innocent blood.
20 Judah will be inhabited forever(FH)
and Jerusalem through all generations.
21 Shall I leave their innocent blood unavenged?(FI)
No, I will not.(FJ)”
The Lord dwells in Zion!(FK)
1 The words of Amos, one of the shepherds of Tekoa(FL)—the vision he saw concerning Israel two years before the earthquake,(FM) when Uzziah(FN) was king of Judah and Jeroboam(FO) son of Jehoash[h] was king of Israel.(FP)
2 He said:
“The Lord roars(FQ) from Zion
and thunders(FR) from Jerusalem;(FS)
the pastures of the shepherds dry up,
and the top of Carmel(FT) withers.”(FU)
Judgment on Israel’s Neighbors
3 This is what the Lord says:
“For three sins of Damascus,(FV)
even for four, I will not relent.(FW)
Because she threshed Gilead
with sledges having iron teeth,
4 I will send fire(FX) on the house of Hazael(FY)
that will consume the fortresses(FZ) of Ben-Hadad.(GA)
5 I will break down the gate(GB) of Damascus;
I will destroy the king who is in[i] the Valley of Aven[j]
and the one who holds the scepter in Beth Eden.(GC)
The people of Aram will go into exile to Kir,(GD)”
says the Lord.(GE)
6 This is what the Lord says:
“For three sins of Gaza,(GF)
even for four, I will not relent.(GG)
Because she took captive whole communities
and sold them to Edom,(GH)
7 I will send fire on the walls of Gaza
that will consume her fortresses.
8 I will destroy the king[k] of Ashdod(GI)
and the one who holds the scepter in Ashkelon.
I will turn my hand(GJ) against Ekron,
till the last of the Philistines(GK) are dead,”(GL)
says the Sovereign Lord.(GM)
9 This is what the Lord says:
“For three sins of Tyre,(GN)
even for four, I will not relent.(GO)
Because she sold whole communities of captives to Edom,
disregarding a treaty of brotherhood,(GP)
10 I will send fire on the walls of Tyre
that will consume her fortresses.(GQ)”
11 This is what the Lord says:
“For three sins of Edom,(GR)
even for four, I will not relent.
Because he pursued his brother with a sword(GS)
and slaughtered the women of the land,
because his anger raged continually
and his fury flamed unchecked,(GT)
12 I will send fire on Teman(GU)
that will consume the fortresses of Bozrah.(GV)”
13 This is what the Lord says:
“For three sins of Ammon,(GW)
even for four, I will not relent.
Because he ripped open the pregnant women(GX) of Gilead
in order to extend his borders,
14 I will set fire to the walls of Rabbah(GY)
that will consume(GZ) her fortresses
amid war cries(HA) on the day of battle,
amid violent winds(HB) on a stormy day.
15 Her king[l] will go into exile,
he and his officials together,(HC)”
says the Lord.(HD)
2 This is what the Lord says:
“For three sins of Moab,(HE)
even for four, I will not relent.
Because he burned to ashes(HF)
the bones of Edom’s king,
2 I will send fire on Moab
that will consume the fortresses of Kerioth.[m](HG)
Moab will go down in great tumult
amid war cries(HH) and the blast of the trumpet.(HI)
3 I will destroy her ruler(HJ)
and kill all her officials with him,”(HK)
says the Lord.(HL)
4 This is what the Lord says:
“For three sins of Judah,(HM)
even for four, I will not relent.
Because they have rejected the law(HN) of the Lord
and have not kept his decrees,(HO)
because they have been led astray(HP) by false gods,[n](HQ)
the gods[o] their ancestors followed,(HR)
5 I will send fire(HS) on Judah
that will consume the fortresses(HT) of Jerusalem.(HU)”
Judgment on Israel
6 This is what the Lord says:
“For three sins of Israel,
even for four, I will not relent.(HV)
They sell the innocent for silver,
and the needy for a pair of sandals.(HW)
7 They trample on the heads of the poor
as on the dust of the ground
and deny justice to the oppressed.
Father and son use the same girl
and so profane my holy name.(HX)
8 They lie down beside every altar
on garments taken in pledge.(HY)
In the house of their god
they drink wine(HZ) taken as fines.(IA)
9 “Yet I destroyed the Amorites(IB) before them,
though they were tall(IC) as the cedars
and strong as the oaks.(ID)
I destroyed their fruit above
and their roots(IE) below.
10 I brought you up out of Egypt(IF)
and led(IG) you forty years in the wilderness(IH)
to give you the land of the Amorites.(II)
11 “I also raised up prophets(IJ) from among your children
and Nazirites(IK) from among your youths.
Is this not true, people of Israel?”
declares the Lord.
12 “But you made the Nazirites drink wine
and commanded the prophets not to prophesy.(IL)
13 “Now then, I will crush you
as a cart crushes when loaded with grain.(IM)
14 The swift will not escape,(IN)
the strong(IO) will not muster their strength,
and the warrior will not save his life.(IP)
15 The archer(IQ) will not stand his ground,
the fleet-footed soldier will not get away,
and the horseman(IR) will not save his life.(IS)
16 Even the bravest warriors(IT)
will flee naked on that day,”
declares the Lord.

The Day of the Lord
2 Blow (A)the [a]trumpet in Zion,
And (B)sound an alarm in My holy mountain!
Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble;
For (C)the day of the Lord is coming,
For it is at hand:
2 (D)A day of darkness and gloominess,
A day of clouds and thick darkness,
Like the morning clouds spread over the mountains.
(E)A people come, great and strong,
(F)The like of whom has never been;
Nor will there ever be any such after them,
Even for many successive generations.
3 A fire devours before them,
And behind them a flame burns;
The land is like (G)the Garden of Eden before them,
(H)And behind them a desolate wilderness;
Surely nothing shall escape them.
4 (I)Their appearance is like the appearance of horses;
And like [b]swift steeds, so they run.
5 (J)With a noise like chariots
Over mountaintops they leap,
Like the noise of a flaming fire that devours the stubble,
Like a strong people set in battle array.
6 Before them the people writhe in pain;
(K)All faces [c]are drained of color.
7 They run like mighty men,
They climb the wall like men of war;
Every one marches in formation,

A Call to Repentance
12 “Now, therefore,” says the Lord,
(U)“Turn to Me with all your heart,
With fasting, with weeping, and with mourning.”
13 So (V)rend your heart, and not (W)your garments;
Return to the Lord your God,
For He is (X)gracious and merciful,
Slow to anger, and of great kindness;
And He relents from doing harm.
14 (Y)Who knows if He will turn and relent,
And leave (Z)a blessing behind Him—
(AA)A grain offering and a drink offering
For the Lord your God?
15 (AB)Blow the [f]trumpet in Zion,
(AC)Consecrate a fast,
Call a sacred assembly;
16 Gather the people,
(AD)Sanctify the congregation,
Assemble the elders,
Gather the children and nursing babes;
(AE)Let the bridegroom go out from his chamber,
And the bride from her dressing room.
17 Let the priests, who minister to the Lord,
Weep (AF)between the porch and the altar;
Let them say, (AG)“Spare Your people, O Lord,
And do not give Your heritage to reproach,
That the nations should [g]rule over them.
(AH)Why should they say among the peoples,
‘Where is their God?’ ”
The Land Refreshed(AI)
18 Then the Lord will (AJ)be zealous for His land,
And pity His people.
19 The Lord will answer and say to His people,
“Behold, I will send you (AK)grain and new wine and oil,
And you will be satisfied by them;
I will no longer make you a reproach among the nations.
20 “But (AL)I will remove far from you (AM)the northern army,
And will drive him away into a barren and desolate land,
With his face toward the eastern sea
And his back (AN)toward the western sea;
His stench will come up,
And his foul odor will rise,
Because he has done [h]monstrous things.”
21 Fear not, O land;
Be glad and rejoice,
For the Lord has done [i]marvelous things!
22 Do not be afraid, you beasts of the field;
For (AO)the open pastures are springing up,
And the tree bears its fruit;
The fig tree and the vine yield their strength.
23 Be glad then, you children of Zion,
And (AP)rejoice in the Lord your God;
For He has given you the [j]former rain faithfully,
And He (AQ)will cause the rain to come down for you—
The former rain,
And the latter rain in the first month.
24 The threshing floors shall be full of wheat,
And the vats shall overflow with new wine and oil.
25 “So I will restore to you the years (AR)that the swarming [k]locust has eaten,
The crawling locust,
The consuming locust,
And the chewing locust,
My great army which I sent among you.
26 You shall (AS)eat in plenty and be satisfied,
And praise the name of the Lord your God,
Who has dealt wondrously with you;
And My people shall never be put to (AT)shame.
27 Then you shall know that I am (AU)in the midst of Israel:
(AV)I am the Lord your God
And there is no other.
My people shall never be put to shame.
God’s Spirit Poured Out
28 “And(AW) it shall come to pass afterward
That (AX)I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh;
(AY)Your sons and your (AZ)daughters shall prophesy,
Your old men shall dream dreams,
Your young men shall see visions.
29 And also on My (BA)menservants and on My maidservants
I will pour out My Spirit in those days.
30 “And (BB)I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth:
Blood and fire and pillars of smoke.
31 (BC)The sun shall be turned into darkness,
And the moon into blood,
(BD)Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord.
32 And it shall come to pass
That (BE)whoever calls on the name of the Lord
Shall be [l]saved.
For (BF)in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be [m]deliverance,
As the Lord has said,
Among (BG)the remnant whom the Lord calls.
God Judges the Nations
3 “For behold, (BH)in those days and at that time,
When I bring back the captives of Judah and Jerusalem,
2 (BI)I will also gather all nations,
And bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat;
And I (BJ)will enter into judgment with them there
On account of My people, My heritage Israel,
Whom they have scattered among the nations;
They have also divided up My land.
3 They have (BK)cast lots for My people,
Have given a boy as payment for a harlot,
And sold a girl for wine, that they may drink.
4 “Indeed, what have you to do with Me,
(BL)O Tyre and Sidon, and all the coasts of Philistia?
Will you [n]retaliate against Me?
But if you [o]retaliate against Me,
Swiftly and speedily I will return your [p]retaliation upon your own head;
5 Because you have taken My silver and My gold,
And have carried into your temples My [q]prized possessions.
6 Also the people of Judah and the people of Jerusalem
You have sold to the Greeks,
That you may remove them far from their borders.
7 “Behold, (BM)I will raise them
Out of the place to which you have sold them,
And will return your [r]retaliation upon your own head.
8 I will sell your sons and your daughters
Into the hand of the people of Judah,
And they will sell them to the (BN)Sabeans,[s]
To a people (BO)far off;
For the Lord has spoken.”
9 (BP)Proclaim this among the nations:
“Prepare for war!
Wake up the mighty men,
Let all the men of war draw near,
Let them come up.
10 (BQ)Beat your plowshares into swords
And your [t]pruning hooks into spears;
(BR)Let the weak say, ‘I am strong.’ ”
11 Assemble and come, all you nations,
And gather together all around.
Cause (BS)Your mighty ones to go down there, O Lord.
12 “Let the nations be wakened, and come up to the Valley of Jehoshaphat;
For there I will sit to (BT)judge all the surrounding nations.
13 (BU)Put in the sickle, for (BV)the harvest is ripe.
Come, go down;
For the (BW)winepress is full,
The vats overflow—
For their wickedness is great.”
14 Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision!
For (BX)the day of the Lord is near in the valley of decision.
15 The sun and moon will grow dark,
And the stars will diminish their brightness.
16 The Lord also will roar from Zion,
And utter His voice from Jerusalem;
The heavens and earth will shake;
(BY)But the Lord will be a shelter for His people,
And the strength of the children of Israel.
17 “So you shall know that I am the Lord your God,
Dwelling in Zion My (BZ)holy mountain.
Then Jerusalem shall be holy,
And no aliens shall ever pass through her again.”
God Blesses His People
18 And it will come to pass in that day
That the mountains shall drip with new wine,
The hills shall flow with milk,
And all the brooks of Judah shall be flooded with water;
A (CA)fountain shall flow from the house of the Lord
And water the Valley of [u]Acacias.
19 “Egypt shall be a desolation,
And Edom a desolate wilderness,
Because of violence against the people of Judah,
For they have shed innocent blood in their land.
20 But Judah shall abide forever,
And Jerusalem from generation to generation.
21 For I will (CB)acquit them of the guilt of bloodshed, whom I had not acquitted;
For the Lord dwells in Zion.”
Judgments on Israel’s Neighbors
1 The words of Amos, who was among the (CC)sheepbreeders of (CD)Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel in the days of (CE)Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of (CF)Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel, two years before the (CG)earthquake.
2 And he said:
“The Lord (CH)roars from Zion,
And utters His voice from Jerusalem;
The pastures of the shepherds mourn,
And the top of (CI)Carmel withers.”
Judgment on the Nations
3 Thus says the Lord:
“For three transgressions of (CJ)Damascus, and for four,
I will not turn away its punishment,
Because they have (CK)threshed Gilead with implements of iron.
4 (CL)But I will send a fire into the house of Hazael,
Which shall devour the palaces of (CM)Ben-Hadad.
5 I will also break the gate (CN)bar of Damascus,
And cut off the inhabitant from the Valley of Aven,
And the one who [v]holds the scepter from [w]Beth Eden.
The people of Syria shall go captive to Kir,”
Says the Lord.
6 Thus says the Lord:
“For three transgressions of (CO)Gaza, and for four,
I will not turn away its punishment,
Because they took captive the whole captivity
To deliver them up to Edom.
7 (CP)But I will send a fire upon the wall of Gaza,
Which shall devour its palaces.
8 I will cut off the inhabitant (CQ)from Ashdod,
And the one who holds the scepter from Ashkelon;
I will (CR)turn My hand against Ekron,
And (CS)the remnant of the Philistines shall perish,”
Says the Lord God.
9 Thus says the Lord:
“For three transgressions of (CT)Tyre, and for four,
I will not turn away its punishment,
Because they delivered up the whole captivity to Edom,
And did not remember the covenant of brotherhood.
10 But I will send a fire upon the wall of Tyre,
Which shall devour its palaces.”
11 Thus says the Lord:
“For three transgressions of (CU)Edom, and for four,
I will not turn away its punishment,
Because he pursued his (CV)brother with the sword,
And cast off all pity;
His anger tore perpetually,
And he kept his wrath forever.
12 But (CW)I will send a fire upon Teman,
Which shall devour the palaces of Bozrah.”
13 Thus says the Lord:
“For three transgressions of (CX)the people of Ammon, and for four,
I will not turn away its punishment,
Because they ripped open the women with child in Gilead,
That they might enlarge their territory.
14 But I will kindle a fire in the wall of (CY)Rabbah,
And it shall devour its palaces,
(CZ)Amid shouting in the day of battle,
And a tempest in the day of the whirlwind.
15 (DA)Their king shall go into captivity,
He and his princes together,”
Says the Lord.
Judgment on Israel
2 Thus says the Lord:
(DB)“For three transgressions of Moab, and for four,
I will not turn away its punishment,
Because he (DC)burned the bones of the king of Edom to lime.
2 But I will send a fire upon Moab,
And it shall devour the palaces of (DD)Kerioth;
Moab shall die with tumult,
With shouting and trumpet sound.
3 And I will cut off (DE)the judge from its midst,
And slay all its princes with him,”
Says the Lord.
Judgment on Judah
4 Thus says the Lord:
“For three transgressions of (DF)Judah, and for four,
I will not turn away its punishment,
(DG)Because they have despised the law of the Lord,
And have not kept His commandments.
(DH)Their lies lead them astray,
Lies (DI)which their fathers followed.
5 (DJ)But I will send a fire upon Judah,
And it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem.”
Judgment on Israel
6 Thus says the Lord:
“For three transgressions of (DK)Israel, and for four,
I will not turn away its punishment,
Because (DL)they sell the righteous for silver,
And the (DM)poor for a pair of sandals.
7 They [x]pant after the dust of the earth which is on the head of the poor,
And (DN)pervert the way of the humble.
(DO)A man and his father go in to the same girl,
(DP)To defile My holy name.
8 They lie down (DQ)by every altar on clothes (DR)taken in pledge,
And drink the wine of [y]the condemned in the house of their god.
9 “Yet it was I who destroyed the (DS)Amorite before them,
Whose height was like the (DT)height of the cedars,
And he was as strong as the oaks;
Yet I (DU)destroyed his fruit above
And his roots beneath.
10 Also it was (DV)I who brought you up from the land of Egypt,
And (DW)led you forty years through the wilderness,
To possess the land of the Amorite.
11 I raised up some of your sons as (DX)prophets,
And some of your young men as (DY)Nazirites.
Is it not so, O you children of Israel?”
Says the Lord.
12 “But you gave the Nazirites wine to drink,
And commanded the prophets (DZ)saying,
‘Do not prophesy!’
13 “Behold,(EA) I am [z]weighed down by you,
As a cart full of sheaves [aa]is weighed down.
14 (EB)Therefore [ab]flight shall perish from the swift,
The strong shall not strengthen his power,
(EC)Nor shall the mighty [ac]deliver himself;
15 He shall not stand who handles the bow,
The swift of foot shall not [ad]escape,
Nor shall he who rides a horse deliver himself.

Shall flee naked in that day,”

3 The foolishness of man perverteth his way: and his heart fretteth against the Lord.
4 Wealth maketh many friends; but the poor is separated from his neighbour.
5 A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall not escape.
6 Many will intreat the favour of the prince: and every man is a friend to him that giveth gifts.
7 All the brethren of the poor do hate him: how much more do his friends go far from him? he pursueth them with words, yet they are wanting to him.
