You turn man to destruction,
And say, (A)“Return, O children of men.”
(B)For a thousand years in Your sight
Are like yesterday when it is past,
And like a watch in the night.
You carry them away like a flood;
(C)They are like a sleep.
In the morning (D)they are like grass which grows up:
In the morning it flourishes and grows up;
In the evening it is cut down and withers.

For we have been consumed by Your anger,
And by Your wrath we are terrified.
(E)You have set our iniquities before You,
Our (F)secret sins in the light of Your countenance.
For all our days have passed away in Your wrath;
We finish our years like a sigh.
10 The days of our lives are seventy years;
And if by reason of strength they are eighty years,
Yet their boast is only labor and sorrow;
For it is soon cut off, and we fly away.
11 Who knows the power of Your anger?
For as the fear of You, so is Your wrath.
12 (G)So teach us to number our days,
That we may gain a heart of wisdom.

For it is the God (A)who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has (B)shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Cast Down but Unconquered

But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, (C)that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us. We are (D)hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not (E)forsaken; (F)struck down, but not destroyed— 10 (G)always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, (H)that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body.
