4 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said:

Job 5:1-11

5 “Call now; is there anyone who will answer you?
    To which of ^(A)the holy ones will you turn?
²Surely vexation kills the fool,
    and jealousy slays the simple.
³^(B)I have seen the fool taking root,
    but suddenly I cursed his dwelling.
⁴His children are ^(C)far from safety;
    they are crushed in ^(D)the gate,
    and there is no one to deliver them.
⁵The hungry eat his harvest,
    and he takes it even out of thorns,^[a]
    and the thirsty pant^[b] after his^[c] wealth.
⁶For affliction does not come from the dust,
    nor does trouble sprout from the ground,
⁷but man is ^(E)born to trouble
    as the sparks fly upward.

⁸“As for me, I would seek God,
    and to God would I commit my cause,
⁹who ^(F)does great things and ^(G)unsearchable,
    ^(H)marvelous things without number:
¹⁰he gives ^(I)rain on the earth
    and sends waters on the fields;
¹¹he ^(J)sets on high those who are lowly,
    and those who mourn are lifted to safety.

Saul Proclaims Jesus in Synagogues

For ^(B)some days he was with the disciples at Damascus. ²⁰And immediately he proclaimed Jesus in the synagogues, saying, ^(C)“He is the Son of God.” ²¹And all who heard him were amazed and said, “Is not this the man who ^(D)made havoc ^(E)in Jerusalem of those who called upon this name? And has he not come here for this purpose, to bring them bound before the chief priests?” ²²But Saul ^(F)increased all the more in strength, and ^(G)confounded the Jews who lived in Damascus by proving ^(H)that Jesus was the Christ.

²³^(I)When many days had passed, the Jews^[a] plotted to kill him, ²⁴but their ^(J)plot became known to Saul. ^(K)They were watching the gates day and night in order to kill him, ²⁵but his disciples took him by night and ^(L)let him down through an opening in the wall,^[b] lowering him in a basket.

²⁶And ^(M)when he had come to Jerusalem, he attempted to join the disciples. And they were all afraid of him, for they did not believe that he was a disciple. ²⁷But ^(N)Barnabas took him and ^(O)brought him to the apostles and declared to them ^(P)how on the road he had seen the Lord, who spoke to him, and ^(Q)how at Damascus he had ^(R)preached boldly in the name of Jesus. ²⁸So he went ^(S)in and out among them at Jerusalem, preaching boldly in the name of the Lord. ²⁹And he spoke and disputed against ^(T)the Hellenists.^[c] But ^(U)they were seeking to kill him. ³⁰And when ^(V)the brothers learned this, they brought him down to Caesarea and sent him off ^(W)to Tarsus.

³¹So ^(X)the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria had peace and was being built up. And ^(Y)walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, ^(Z)it multiplied.
