13 “The wings of the ostrich flap joyfully,
    though they cannot compare
    with the wings and feathers of the stork.(A)
14 She lays her eggs on the ground
    and lets them warm in the sand,
15 unmindful that a foot may crush them,
    that some wild animal may trample them.(B)
16 She treats her young harshly,(C) as if they were not hers;
    she cares not that her labor was in vain,
17 for God did not endow her with wisdom
    or give her a share of good sense.(D)
18 Yet when she spreads her feathers to run,
    she laughs(E) at horse and rider.

19 “Do you give the horse its strength(F)
    or clothe its neck with a flowing mane?
20 Do you make it leap like a locust,(G)
    striking terror(H) with its proud snorting?(I)
21 It paws fiercely, rejoicing in its strength,(J)
    and charges into the fray.(K)
22 It laughs(L) at fear, afraid of nothing;
    it does not shy away from the sword.
23 The quiver(M) rattles against its side,
    along with the flashing spear(N) and lance.
24 In frenzied excitement it eats up the ground;
    it cannot stand still when the trumpet sounds.(O)
25 At the blast of the trumpet(P) it snorts, ‘Aha!’
    It catches the scent of battle from afar,
    the shout of commanders and the battle cry.(Q)

26 “Does the hawk take flight by your wisdom
    and spread its wings toward the south?(R)
27 Does the eagle soar at your command
    and build its nest on high?(S)
28 It dwells on a cliff and stays there at night;
    a rocky crag(T) is its stronghold.
29 From there it looks for food;(U)
    its eyes detect it from afar.
30 Its young ones feast on blood,
    and where the slain are, there it is.”(V)

40 The Lord said to Job:(W)

“Will the one who contends with the Almighty(X) correct him?(Y)
    Let him who accuses God answer him!”(Z)

Then Job answered the Lord:

“I am unworthy(AA)—how can I reply to you?
    I put my hand over my mouth.(AB)
I spoke once, but I have no answer(AC)
    twice, but I will say no more.”(AD)

Then the Lord spoke to Job out of the storm:(AE)

“Brace yourself like a man;
    I will question you,
    and you shall answer me.(AF)

“Would you discredit my justice?(AG)
    Would you condemn me to justify yourself?(AH)
Do you have an arm like God’s,(AI)
    and can your voice(AJ) thunder like his?(AK)
10 Then adorn yourself with glory and splendor,
    and clothe yourself in honor and majesty.(AL)
11 Unleash the fury of your wrath,(AM)
    look at all who are proud and bring them low,(AN)
12 look at all who are proud(AO) and humble them,(AP)
    crush(AQ) the wicked where they stand.
13 Bury them all in the dust together;(AR)
    shroud their faces in the grave.(AS)
14 Then I myself will admit to you
    that your own right hand can save you.(AT)

15 “Look at Behemoth,
    which I made(AU) along with you
    and which feeds on grass like an ox.(AV)
16 What strength(AW) it has in its loins,
    what power in the muscles of its belly!(AX)
17 Its tail sways like a cedar;
    the sinews of its thighs are close-knit.(AY)
18 Its bones are tubes of bronze,
    its limbs(AZ) like rods of iron.(BA)
19 It ranks first among the works of God,(BB)
    yet its Maker(BC) can approach it with his sword.(BD)
20 The hills bring it their produce,(BE)
    and all the wild animals play(BF) nearby.(BG)
21 Under the lotus plants it lies,
    hidden among the reeds(BH) in the marsh.(BI)
22 The lotuses conceal it in their shadow;
    the poplars by the stream(BJ) surround it.
23 A raging river(BK) does not alarm it;
    it is secure, though the Jordan(BL) should surge against its mouth.
24 Can anyone capture it by the eyes,
    or trap it and pierce its nose?(BM)

Concerning the Unmarried

25 Now about virgins: I have no command from the Lord,(A) but I give a judgment as one who by the Lord’s mercy(B) is trustworthy. 26 Because of the present crisis, I think that it is good for a man to remain as he is.(C) 27 Are you pledged to a woman? Do not seek to be released. Are you free from such a commitment? Do not look for a wife.(D) 28 But if you do marry, you have not sinned;(E) and if a virgin marries, she has not sinned. But those who marry will face many troubles in this life, and I want to spare you this.

29 What I mean, brothers and sisters, is that the time is short.(F) From now on those who have wives should live as if they do not; 30 those who mourn, as if they did not; those who are happy, as if they were not; those who buy something, as if it were not theirs to keep; 31 those who use the things of the world, as if not engrossed in them. For this world in its present form is passing away.(G)

32 I would like you to be free from concern. An unmarried man is concerned about the Lord’s affairs(H)—how he can please the Lord. 33 But a married man is concerned about the affairs of this world—how he can please his wife— 34 and his interests are divided. An unmarried woman or virgin is concerned about the Lord’s affairs: Her aim is to be devoted to the Lord in both body and spirit.(I) But a married woman is concerned about the affairs of this world—how she can please her husband. 35 I am saying this for your own good, not to restrict you, but that you may live in a right way in undivided(J) devotion to the Lord.

36 If anyone is worried that he might not be acting honorably toward the virgin he is engaged to, and if his passions are too strong[a] and he feels he ought to marry, he should do as he wants. He is not sinning.(K) They should get married. 37 But the man who has settled the matter in his own mind, who is under no compulsion but has control over his own will, and who has made up his mind not to marry the virgin—this man also does the right thing. 38 So then, he who marries the virgin does right,(L) but he who does not marry her does better.[b]

39 A woman is bound to her husband as long as he lives.(M) But if her husband dies, she is free to marry anyone she wishes, but he must belong to the Lord.(N) 40 In my judgment,(O) she is happier if she stays as she is—and I think that I too have the Spirit of God.

Notas al pie

  1. 1 Corinthians 7:36 Or if she is getting beyond the usual age for marriage
  2. 1 Corinthians 7:38 Or 36 If anyone thinks he is not treating his daughter properly, and if she is getting along in years (or if her passions are too strong), and he feels she ought to marry, he should do as he wants. He is not sinning. He should let her get married. 37 But the man who has settled the matter in his own mind, who is under no compulsion but has control over his own will, and who has made up his mind to keep the virgin unmarried—this man also does the right thing. 38 So then, he who gives his virgin in marriage does right, but he who does not give her in marriage does better.
