37 Por eso también se estremece mi corazón,
Y salta de su lugar.
2 Oíd atentamente el estrépito de su voz,
Y el sonido que sale de su boca.
3 Debajo de todos los cielos lo dirige,
Y su luz hasta los fines de la tierra.
4 Después de ella brama el sonido,
Truena él con voz majestuosa;
Y aunque sea oída su voz, no los detiene.
5 Truena Dios maravillosamente con su voz;
Él hace grandes cosas, que nosotros no entendemos.
6 Porque a la nieve dice: Desciende a la tierra;
También a la llovizna, y a los aguaceros torrenciales.
7 Así hace retirarse a todo hombre,
Para que los hombres todos reconozcan su obra.
8 Las bestias entran en su escondrijo,
Y se están en sus moradas.
9 Del sur viene el torbellino,
Y el frío de los vientos del norte.
10 Por el soplo de Dios se da el hielo,
Y las anchas aguas se congelan.
11 Regando también llega a disipar la densa nube,
Y con su luz esparce la niebla.
12 Asimismo por sus designios se revuelven las nubes en derredor,
Para hacer sobre la faz del mundo,
En la tierra, lo que él les mande.
13 Unas veces por azote, otras por causa de su tierra,
Otras por misericordia las hará venir.
14 Escucha esto, Job;
Detente, y considera las maravillas de Dios.
15 ¿Sabes tú cómo Dios las pone en concierto,
Y hace resplandecer la luz de su nube?
16 ¿Has conocido tú las diferencias de las nubes,
Las maravillas del Perfecto en sabiduría?
17 ¿Por qué están calientes tus vestidos
Cuando él sosiega la tierra con el viento del sur?
18 ¿Extendiste tú con él los cielos,
Firmes como un espejo fundido?
19 Muéstranos qué le hemos de decir;
Porque nosotros no podemos ordenar las ideas a causa de las tinieblas.
20 ¿Será preciso contarle cuando yo hablare?
Por más que el hombre razone, quedará como abismado.
21 Mas ahora ya no se puede mirar la luz esplendente en los cielos,
Luego que pasa el viento y los limpia,
22 Viniendo de la parte del norte la dorada claridad.
En Dios hay una majestad terrible.
23 Él es Todopoderoso, al cual no alcanzamos, grande en poder;
Y en juicio y en multitud de justicia no afligirá.
24 Lo temerán por tanto los hombres;
Él no estima a ninguno que cree en su propio corazón ser sabio.
Jehová convence a Job de su ignorancia
38 Entonces respondió Jehová a Job desde un torbellino, y dijo:
2 ¿Quién es ese que oscurece el consejo
Con palabras sin sabiduría?
3 Ahora ciñe como varón tus lomos;
Yo te preguntaré, y tú me contestarás.
4 ¿Dónde estabas tú cuando yo fundaba la tierra?
Házmelo saber, si tienes inteligencia.
5 ¿Quién ordenó sus medidas, si lo sabes?
¿O quién extendió sobre ella cordel?
6 ¿Sobre qué están fundadas sus bases?
¿O quién puso su piedra angular,
7 Cuando alababan todas las estrellas del alba,
Y se regocijaban todos los hijos de Dios?
8 ¿Quién encerró con puertas el mar,
Cuando se derramaba saliéndose de su seno,
9 Cuando puse yo nubes por vestidura suya,
Y por su faja oscuridad,
10 Y establecí sobre él mi decreto,
Le puse puertas y cerrojo,
11 Y dije: Hasta aquí llegarás, y no pasarás adelante,
Y ahí parará el orgullo de tus olas?(A)
12 ¿Has mandado tú a la mañana en tus días?
¿Has mostrado al alba su lugar,
13 Para que ocupe los fines de la tierra,
Y para que sean sacudidos de ella los impíos?
14 Ella muda luego de aspecto como barro bajo el sello,
Y viene a estar como con vestidura;
15 Mas la luz de los impíos es quitada de ellos,
Y el brazo enaltecido es quebrantado.
16 ¿Has entrado tú hasta las fuentes del mar,
Y has andado escudriñando el abismo?
17 ¿Te han sido descubiertas las puertas de la muerte,
Y has visto las puertas de la sombra de muerte?
18 ¿Has considerado tú hasta las anchuras de la tierra?
Declara si sabes todo esto.
19 ¿Por dónde va el camino a la habitación de la luz,
Y dónde está el lugar de las tinieblas,
20 Para que las lleves a sus límites,
Y entiendas las sendas de su casa?
21 ¡Tú lo sabes! Pues entonces ya habías nacido,
Y es grande el número de tus días.
22 ¿Has entrado tú en los tesoros de la nieve,
O has visto los tesoros del granizo,
23 Que tengo reservados para el tiempo de angustia,
Para el día de la guerra y de la batalla?
24 ¿Por qué camino se reparte la luz,
Y se esparce el viento solano sobre la tierra?
25 ¿Quién repartió conducto al turbión,
Y camino a los relámpagos y truenos,
26 Haciendo llover sobre la tierra deshabitada,
Sobre el desierto, donde no hay hombre,
27 Para saciar la tierra desierta e inculta,
Y para hacer brotar la tierna hierba?
28 ¿Tiene la lluvia padre?
¿O quién engendró las gotas del rocío?
29 ¿De qué vientre salió el hielo?
Y la escarcha del cielo, ¿quién la engendró?
30 Las aguas se endurecen a manera de piedra,
Y se congela la faz del abismo.
31 ¿Podrás tú atar los lazos de las Pléyades,
O desatarás las ligaduras de Orión?(B)
32 ¿Sacarás tú a su tiempo las constelaciones de los cielos,
O guiarás a la Osa Mayor con sus hijos?
33 ¿Supiste tú las ordenanzas de los cielos?
¿Dispondrás tú de su potestad en la tierra?
34 ¿Alzarás tú a las nubes tu voz,
Para que te cubra muchedumbre de aguas?
35 ¿Enviarás tú los relámpagos, para que ellos vayan?
¿Y te dirán ellos: Henos aquí?
36 ¿Quién puso la sabiduría en el corazón?
¿O quién dio al espíritu inteligencia?
37 ¿Quién puso por cuenta los cielos con sabiduría?
Y los odres de los cielos, ¿quién los hace inclinar,
38 Cuando el polvo se ha convertido en dureza,
Y los terrones se han pegado unos con otros?
39 ¿Cazarás tú la presa para el león?
¿Saciarás el hambre de los leoncillos,
40 Cuando están echados en las cuevas,
O se están en sus guaridas para acechar?
41 ¿Quién prepara al cuervo su alimento,
Cuando sus polluelos claman a Dios,
Y andan errantes por falta de comida?
39 ¿Sabes tú el tiempo en que paren las cabras monteses?
¿O miraste tú las ciervas cuando están pariendo?
2 ¿Contaste tú los meses de su preñez,
Y sabes el tiempo cuando han de parir?
3 Se encorvan, hacen salir sus hijos,
Pasan sus dolores.
4 Sus hijos se fortalecen, crecen con el pasto;
Salen, y no vuelven a ellas.
5 ¿Quién echó libre al asno montés,
Y quién soltó sus ataduras?
6 Al cual yo puse casa en la soledad,
Y sus moradas en lugares estériles.
7 Se burla de la multitud de la ciudad;
No oye las voces del arriero.
8 Lo oculto de los montes es su pasto,
Y anda buscando toda cosa verde.
9 ¿Querrá el búfalo servirte a ti,
O quedar en tu pesebre?
10 ¿Atarás tú al búfalo con coyunda para el surco?
¿Labrará los valles en pos de ti?
11 ¿Confiarás tú en él, por ser grande su fuerza,
Y le fiarás tu labor?
12 ¿Fiarás de él para que recoja tu semilla,
Y la junte en tu era?
13 ¿Diste tú hermosas alas al pavo real,
O alas y plumas al avestruz?
14 El cual desampara en la tierra sus huevos,
Y sobre el polvo los calienta,
15 Y olvida que el pie los puede pisar,
Y que puede quebrarlos la bestia del campo.
16 Se endurece para con sus hijos, como si no fuesen suyos,
No temiendo que su trabajo haya sido en vano;
17 Porque le privó Dios de sabiduría,
Y no le dio inteligencia.
18 Luego que se levanta en alto,
Se burla del caballo y de su jinete.
19 ¿Diste tú al caballo la fuerza?
¿Vestiste tú su cuello de crines ondulantes?
20 ¿Le intimidarás tú como a langosta?
El resoplido de su nariz es formidable.
21 Escarba la tierra, se alegra en su fuerza,
Sale al encuentro de las armas;
22 Hace burla del espanto, y no teme,
Ni vuelve el rostro delante de la espada.
23 Contra él suenan la aljaba,
El hierro de la lanza y de la jabalina;
24 Y él con ímpetu y furor escarba la tierra,
Sin importarle el sonido de la trompeta;
25 Antes como que dice entre los clarines: ¡Ea!
Y desde lejos huele la batalla,
El grito de los capitanes, y el vocerío.
26 ¿Vuela el gavilán por tu sabiduría,
Y extiende hacia el sur sus alas?
27 ¿Se remonta el águila por tu mandamiento,
Y pone en alto su nido?
28 Ella habita y mora en la peña,
En la cumbre del peñasco y de la roca.
29 Desde allí acecha la presa;
Sus ojos observan de muy lejos.
30 Sus polluelos chupan la sangre;
Y donde hubiere cadáveres, allí está ella.
40 Además respondió Jehová a Job, y dijo:
2 ¿Es sabiduría contender con el Omnipotente?
El que disputa con Dios, responda a esto.
3 Entonces respondió Job a Jehová, y dijo:
4 He aquí que yo soy vil; ¿qué te responderé?
Mi mano pongo sobre mi boca.
5 Una vez hablé, mas no responderé;
Aun dos veces, mas no volveré a hablar.
Manifestaciones del poder de Dios
6 Respondió Jehová a Job desde el torbellino, y dijo:
7 Cíñete ahora como varón tus lomos;
Yo te preguntaré, y tú me responderás.
8 ¿Invalidarás tú también mi juicio?
¿Me condenarás a mí, para justificarte tú?
9 ¿Tienes tú un brazo como el de Dios?
¿Y truenas con voz como la suya?
10 Adórnate ahora de majestad y de alteza,
Y vístete de honra y de hermosura.
11 Derrama el ardor de tu ira;
Mira a todo altivo, y abátelo.
12 Mira a todo soberbio, y humíllalo,
Y quebranta a los impíos en su sitio.
13 Encúbrelos a todos en el polvo,
Encierra sus rostros en la oscuridad;
14 Y yo también te confesaré
Que podrá salvarte tu diestra.
15 He aquí ahora behemot, el cual hice como a ti;
Hierba come como buey.
16 He aquí ahora que su fuerza está en sus lomos,
Y su vigor en los músculos de su vientre.
17 Su cola mueve como un cedro,
Y los nervios de sus muslos están entretejidos.
18 Sus huesos son fuertes como bronce,
Y sus miembros como barras de hierro.
19 Él es el principio de los caminos de Dios;
El que lo hizo, puede hacer que su espada a él se acerque.
20 Ciertamente los montes producen hierba para él;
Y toda bestia del campo retoza allá.
21 Se echará debajo de las sombras,
En lo oculto de las cañas y de los lugares húmedos.
22 Los árboles sombríos lo cubren con su sombra;
Los sauces del arroyo lo rodean.
23 He aquí, sale de madre el río, pero él no se inmuta;
Tranquilo está, aunque todo un Jordán se estrelle contra su boca.
24 ¿Lo tomará alguno cuando está vigilante,
Y horadará su nariz?
41 ¿Sacarás tú al leviatán(C) con anzuelo,
O con cuerda que le eches en su lengua?
2 ¿Pondrás tú soga en sus narices,
Y horadarás con garfio su quijada?
3 ¿Multiplicará él ruegos para contigo?
¿Te hablará él lisonjas?
4 ¿Hará pacto contigo
Para que lo tomes por siervo perpetuo?
5 ¿Jugarás con él como con pájaro,
O lo atarás para tus niñas?
6 ¿Harán de él banquete los compañeros?
¿Lo repartirán entre los mercaderes?
7 ¿Cortarás tú con cuchillo su piel,
O con arpón de pescadores su cabeza?
8 Pon tu mano sobre él;
Te acordarás de la batalla, y nunca más volverás.
9 He aquí que la esperanza acerca de él será burlada,
Porque aun a su sola vista se desmayarán.
10 Nadie hay tan osado que lo despierte;
¿Quién, pues, podrá estar delante de mí?
11 ¿Quién me ha dado a mí primero, para que yo restituya?(D)
Todo lo que hay debajo del cielo es mío.
12 No guardaré silencio sobre sus miembros,
Ni sobre sus fuerzas y la gracia de su disposición.
13 ¿Quién descubrirá la delantera de su vestidura?
¿Quién se acercará a él con su freno doble?
14 ¿Quién abrirá las puertas de su rostro?
Las hileras de sus dientes espantan.
15 La gloria de su vestido son escudos fuertes,
Cerrados entre sí estrechamente.
16 El uno se junta con el otro,
Que viento no entra entre ellos.
17 Pegado está el uno con el otro;
Están trabados entre sí, que no se pueden apartar.
18 Con sus estornudos enciende lumbre,
Y sus ojos son como los párpados del alba.
19 De su boca salen hachones de fuego;
Centellas de fuego proceden.
20 De sus narices sale humo,
Como de una olla o caldero que hierve.
21 Su aliento enciende los carbones,
Y de su boca sale llama.
22 En su cerviz está la fuerza,
Y delante de él se esparce el desaliento.
23 Las partes más flojas de su carne están endurecidas;
Están en él firmes, y no se mueven.
24 Su corazón es firme como una piedra,
Y fuerte como la muela de abajo.
25 De su grandeza tienen temor los fuertes,
Y a causa de su desfallecimiento hacen por purificarse.
26 Cuando alguno lo alcanzare,
Ni espada, ni lanza, ni dardo, ni coselete durará.
27 Estima como paja el hierro,
Y el bronce como leño podrido.
28 Saeta no le hace huir;
Las piedras de honda le son como paja.
29 Tiene toda arma por hojarasca,
Y del blandir de la jabalina se burla.
30 Por debajo tiene agudas conchas;
Imprime su agudez en el suelo.
31 Hace hervir como una olla el mar profundo,
Y lo vuelve como una olla de ungüento.
32 En pos de sí hace resplandecer la senda,
Que parece que el abismo es cano.
33 No hay sobre la tierra quien se le parezca;
Animal hecho exento de temor.
34 Menosprecia toda cosa alta;
Es rey sobre todos los soberbios.
Confesión y justificación de Job
42 Respondió Job a Jehová, y dijo:
2 Yo conozco que todo lo puedes,
Y que no hay pensamiento que se esconda de ti.
3 ¿Quién es el que oscurece el consejo sin entendimiento?(E)
Por tanto, yo hablaba lo que no entendía;
Cosas demasiado maravillosas para mí, que yo no comprendía.
4 Oye, te ruego, y hablaré;
Te preguntaré, y tú me enseñarás.(F)
5 De oídas te había oído;
Mas ahora mis ojos te ven.
6 Por tanto me aborrezco,
Y me arrepiento en polvo y ceniza.
7 Y aconteció que después que habló Jehová estas palabras a Job, Jehová dijo a Elifaz temanita: Mi ira se encendió contra ti y tus dos compañeros; porque no habéis hablado de mí lo recto, como mi siervo Job. 8 Ahora, pues, tomaos siete becerros y siete carneros, e id a mi siervo Job, y ofreced holocausto por vosotros, y mi siervo Job orará por vosotros; porque de cierto a él atenderé para no trataros afrentosamente, por cuanto no habéis hablado de mí con rectitud, como mi siervo Job. 9 Fueron, pues, Elifaz temanita, Bildad suhita y Zofar naamatita, e hicieron como Jehová les dijo; y Jehová aceptó la oración de Job.
Restauración de la prosperidad de Job
10 Y quitó Jehová la aflicción de Job, cuando él hubo orado por sus amigos; y aumentó al doble todas las cosas que habían sido de Job.(G) 11 Y vinieron a él todos sus hermanos y todas sus hermanas, y todos los que antes le habían conocido, y comieron con él pan en su casa, y se condolieron de él, y le consolaron de todo aquel mal que Jehová había traído sobre él; y cada uno de ellos le dio una pieza de dinero y un anillo de oro. 12 Y bendijo Jehová el postrer estado de Job más que el primero; porque tuvo catorce mil ovejas, seis mil camellos, mil yuntas de bueyes y mil asnas, 13 y tuvo siete hijos y tres hijas. 14 Llamó el nombre de la primera, Jemima, el de la segunda, Cesia, y el de la tercera, Keren-hapuc. 15 Y no había mujeres tan hermosas como las hijas de Job en toda la tierra; y les dio su padre herencia entre sus hermanos. 16 Después de esto vivió Job ciento cuarenta años, y vio a sus hijos, y a los hijos de sus hijos, hasta la cuarta generación. 17 Y murió Job viejo y lleno de días.

Elihu Says God Has Authority Over the Storm
37 “At this also my heart trembles,
And leaps from its place.
2 Listen closely to the (A)thunder of His voice,
And the rumbling that goes out from His mouth.
3 Under the whole heaven He lets it loose,
And His [a]lightning travels to the (B)ends of the earth.
4 After it, a voice roars;
He thunders with His majestic voice,
And He does not restrain [b]the lightning when His voice is heard.
5 God (C)thunders wondrously with His voice,
Doing (D)great things which we do not comprehend.
6 For to (E)the snow He says, ‘Fall on the earth,’
And to the [c](F)downpour and the rain, ‘Be strong.’
7 He (G)seals the hand of every person,
So that (H)all people may know His work.
8 Then the animal goes into its (I)lair
And remains in its [d]den.
9 From the [e](J)south comes the storm,
And from the north wind the cold.
10 From the breath of God (K)ice is made,
And the expanse of the waters is frozen.
11 He also (L)loads the clouds with moisture;
He (M)disperses (N)the cloud of His [f]lightning.
12 It changes direction, turning around by His guidance,
That [g]it may do whatever He (O)commands [h]it
On the (P)face of the inhabited earth.
13 Whether for [i](Q)correction, or for (R)His earth,
Or for (S)goodness, He causes it to [j]happen.
14 “Listen to this, Job;
Stand and consider the wonders of God.
15 Do you know how God establishes them,
And makes the [k]lightning of His clouds to shine?
16 Do you know about the hovering of the clouds,
The (T)wonders of One who is (U)perfect in knowledge,
17 You whose garments are hot
When the land is still because of the south wind?
18 Can you, with Him, (V)spread out the skies,
Strong as a cast metal mirror?
19 Teach us what we are to say to Him;
We (W)cannot present our case because of darkness.
20 Shall it be told Him that I would speak?
[l]Or should a man say that he would be swallowed up?
21 “Now people do not see the light which is bright in the skies;
But the wind has passed and cleared them.
22 From the north comes golden splendor;
Around God is awesome majesty.
23 The Almighty—(X)we cannot find Him;
He is (Y)exalted in power
And (Z)He will not violate (AA)justice and abundant righteousness.
24 Therefore people (AB)fear Him;
He does not (AC)regard any who are wise of heart.”
God Speaks Now to Job
38 Then the Lord (AD)answered Job from the whirlwind and said,
2 “Who is this who (AE)darkens the divine plan
By words without knowledge?
3 Now [m](AF)tighten the belt on your waist like a man,
And (AG)I shall ask you, and you inform Me!
4 Where were you (AH)when I laid the foundation of the earth?
Tell Me, if you [n]have understanding,
5 Who set its (AI)measurements? Since you know.
Or who stretched the measuring line over it?
6 On what (AJ)were its bases sunk?
Or who laid its cornerstone,
7 When the morning stars sang together
And all the (AK)sons of God shouted for joy?
8 “Or who (AL)enclosed the sea with doors
When it went out from the womb, bursting forth;
9 When I made a cloud its garment,
And thick darkness its swaddling bands,
10 And I [o](AM)placed boundaries on it
And set a bolt and doors,
11 And I said, ‘As far as this point you shall come, but no farther;
And here your proud waves shall stop’?
God’s Mighty Power
12 “Have you [p]ever in your life commanded the morning,
And made the dawn know its place,
13 So that it would take hold of (AN)the ends of the earth,
And (AO)the wicked would be shaken off from it?
14 It is changed like clay under the seal;
And they stand out like a garment.
15 (AP)Their light is withheld from the wicked,
And the (AQ)uplifted arm is broken.
16 “Have you entered (AR)the springs of the sea,
And walked [q]in the depth of the ocean?
17 Have the gates of death been revealed to you,
And have you seen the gates of (AS)deep darkness?
18 Have you understood the [r]expanse of (AT)the earth?
Tell Me, if you know all this.
19 “Where is the way to the dwelling of light?
And darkness, where is its place,
20 That you would take it to (AU)its territory,
And discern the paths to its [s]home?
21 You know, for (AV)you were born then,
And the number of your days is great!
22 Have you entered the storehouses (AW)of the snow,
And have you seen the storehouses of the (AX)hail,
23 Which I have reserved for a time of distress,
For a day of war and battle?
24 Where is the way that (AY)the light is divided,
And the east wind scattered on the earth?
25 “Who has split open a channel for the flood,
And a way for the thunderbolt,
26 To bring (AZ)rain on a land without [t]people,
On a desert without a person in it,
27 To (BA)satisfy the waste and desolate land,
And to make the [u]seeds of grass to sprout?
28 Does (BB)the rain have a father?
Or who has fathered the drops of dew?
29 From whose womb has come the (BC)ice?
And the frost of heaven, who has given it birth?
30 Water [v]becomes hard like stone,
And the surface of the deep is imprisoned.
31 “Can you tie up the chains of the (BD)Pleiades,
Or untie the cords of Orion?
32 Can you bring out a [w]constellation in its season,
And guide the Bear with her [x]satellites?
33 Do you know the (BE)ordinances of the heavens,
Or do you establish their rule over the earth?
34 “Can you raise your voice to the clouds,
So that an (BF)abundance of water will cover you?
35 Can you (BG)send flashes of lightning, so that they may go
And say to you, ‘Here we are’?
36 Who has (BH)put wisdom in the innermost being,
Or given (BI)understanding to the [y]mind?
37 Who can count the clouds by wisdom,
And (BJ)pour out the water jars of the heavens,
38 When the dust hardens into a mass
And the clods stick together?
39 “Can you hunt the (BK)prey for the lioness,
Or satisfy the appetite of young lions,
40 When they (BL)crouch in their hiding places,
And lie in wait in their lair?
41 Who prepares [z]feed for (BM)the raven
When its young cry to God,
And wander about without food?
God Speaks of Nature and Its Beings
39 “Do you know the time the [aa](BN)mountain goats give birth?
Do you observe the calving of the (BO)deer?
2 Can you count the months they fulfill,
Or do you know the time they give birth?
3 They kneel down, they deliver their young,
They get rid of their labor pains.
4 Their offspring become strong, they grow up in the open field;
They leave and do not return to them.
5 “Who sent the (BP)wild donkey out free?
And who opened the bonds of the swift donkey,
6 To whom I gave (BQ)the wilderness as his home,
And the salt land as his dwelling place?
7 He laughs at the turmoil of the city,
He does not hear the shouting of the taskmaster.
8 He explores the mountains of his pasture,
And searches after every green thing.
9 Will the (BR)wild bull be willing to serve you,
Or will he spend the night at your feeding trough?
10 Can you tie down the wild bull in a furrow with [ab]ropes,
Or will he [ac]plow the valleys after you?
11 Will you trust him because his strength is great,
And leave your labor to him?
12 Will you have faith in him that he will return your [ad]grain
And gather it from your threshing floor?
13 “The wings of the ostrich flap joyously,
With the pinion and feathers of [ae]love,
14 For she abandons her eggs to the earth
And warms them in the dust,
15 And she forgets that a foot may crush [af]them,
Or that a wild animal may trample [ag]them.
16 She treats her young (BS)cruelly, as if they were not hers;
Though her labor is for nothing, she is [ah]unconcerned,
17 Because God has made her forget wisdom,
And has not given her a share of understanding.
18 When she rushes away on high,
She laughs at the horse and his rider.
19 “Do you give the horse his might?
Do you clothe his neck with a mane?
20 Do you make him (BT)leap like locusts?
His majestic (BU)snorting is frightening.
21 [ai]He paws in the valley, and rejoices in his strength;
He (BV)goes out to meet the battle.
22 He laughs at fear and is not dismayed;
And he does not turn back from the sword.
23 The quiver rattles against him,
The flashing spear and javelin.
24 He [aj]races over the ground with a roar and fury,
And he does not stand still when he hears the sound of the trumpet.
25 As often as the trumpet sounds he says, ‘Aha!’
And he senses the battle from afar,
And the thunder of the captains and the war cry.
26 “Is it by your understanding that the hawk soars,
Stretching his wings toward the south?
27 Is it at your [ak]command that the eagle flies high,
And makes (BW)his nest on high?
28 He dwells and spends his nights on the cliff,
On the rocky cliff, an inaccessible place.
29 From there he (BX)tracks food;
His eyes look at it from afar.
30 His young ones also lick up blood greedily;
And (BY)where the slain are, there he is.”
Job Says What Can I Say?
40 Then the Lord said to Job,
2 “Will the faultfinder (BZ)contend with the Almighty?
Let him who (CA)rebukes God [al]give an answer.”
3 Then Job answered the Lord and said,
4 “Behold, I am insignificant; what can I say in response to You?
I (CB)put my hand on my mouth.
5 I have spoken once, and (CC)I will not reply;
Or twice, and I will add nothing more.”
God Questions Job
6 Then the (CD)Lord answered Job from the whirlwind and said,
7 “Now [am](CE)tighten the belt on your waist like a man;
I will (CF)ask you, and you instruct Me.
8 Will you really (CG)nullify My judgment?
Will you (CH)condemn Me (CI)so that you may be justified?
9 Or do you have an arm like God,
And can you (CJ)thunder with a voice like His?
10 “(CK)Adorn yourself with pride and dignity,
And clothe yourself with honor and majesty.
11 Let out your (CL)outbursts of anger,
And look at everyone who is (CM)arrogant, and humble him.
12 Look at everyone who is arrogant, and (CN)humble him,
And (CO)trample down the wicked [an]where they stand.
13 (CP)Hide them together in the dust;
Imprison [ao]them in the hidden place.
14 Then I will also [ap]confess to you,
That your own right hand can save you.
God’s Power Shown in Creatures
15 “Behold, [aq]Behemoth, which (CQ)I made [ar]as well as you;
He eats grass like an ox.
16 Behold, his strength in his waist,
And his power in the muscles of his belly.
17 He hangs his tail like a cedar;
The tendons of his thighs are knit together.
18 His bones are tubes of bronze;
His [as]limbs are like bars of iron.
19 “He is the (CR)first of the ways of God;
Let his (CS)Maker bring His sword near.
20 Indeed the [at]mountains (CT)bring him food,
And all the animals of the field (CU)play there.
21 He lies down under the lotus plants,
In the hiding place of the reeds and the marsh.

The willows of the brook surround him.

And press down his tongue with a rope?

And pierce his jaw with a [ba]hook?
3 Will he make many pleas to you,
Or will he speak to you gentle words?
4 Will he make a covenant with you?
Will you take him as a servant forever?
5 Will you play with him as with a bird,
And tie him down for your young girls?

Will they divide him among the merchants?
7 Can you fill his skin with harpoons,
Or his head with fishing spears?
8 Lay your hand on him.

Who then is he who opposes Me?

12 “I will not be silent about his limbs,
Or his mighty strength, or his graceful frame.

14 Who can open the doors of his face?
Around his teeth there is terror.
15 His [bj]strong scales are his pride,
Locked as with a tight seal.
16 One is so close to another
That no air can come between them.

They clasp each other and cannot be separated.
18 His sneezes flash forth light,
And his eyes are like the (DB)eye of dawn.
19 From his mouth go burning torches;
Sparks of fire leap forth.
20 From his nostrils smoke goes out
As from a boiling pot and burning reeds.

Firm and immovable on him.

Job’s Confession
42 Then Job answered the Lord and said,
2 “I know that (DE)You can do all things,
And that no plan is impossible for You.
3 ‘Who is this who (DF)conceals advice without knowledge?’
Therefore I have declared that which I did not understand,
Things (DG)too wonderful for me, which I do not know.
4 ‘Please listen, and I will speak;
I will (DH)ask You, and You instruct me.’
5 I have (DI)heard of You by the hearing of the ear;
But now my (DJ)eye sees You;
6 Therefore I retract,
And I repent, sitting on dust and ashes.”
God Is Displeased with Job’s Friends
7 It came about after the Lord had spoken these words to Job, that the Lord said to Eliphaz the Temanite, “My wrath is kindled against you and against your two friends, because you have not spoken of Me what is trustworthy, (DK)as My servant Job has. 8 Now therefore, take for yourselves (DL)seven bulls and seven rams, and go to My servant Job, and offer up a (DM)burnt offering for yourselves, and My servant Job will (DN)pray for you. (DO)For I will [bq]accept him so as not to do with you as your foolishness deserves, because you have not spoken of Me what is trustworthy, as My servant Job has.” 9 So Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite went and did as the Lord told them; and the Lord [br]accepted Job.
God Restores Job’s Fortunes
10 The Lord also (DP)restored the fortunes of Job when he prayed for his friends, and the Lord increased double all that Job had. 11 Then all his (DQ)brothers, all his sisters, and all who had known him before came to him, and they ate bread with him in his house; and they (DR)sympathized with him and comforted him for all the adversities that the Lord had brought on him. And each one gave him a [bs]piece of money, and each a ring of gold. 12 (DS)The Lord blessed the latter days of Job more than his beginning; (DT)and he had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand female donkeys. 13 (DU)He also had seven sons and three daughters. 14 He named the first Jemimah, the second Keziah, and the third Keren-happuch. 15 In all the land no women were found as beautiful as Job’s daughters; and their father gave them inheritances among their brothers. 16 After this, Job lived 140 years, and saw his sons and his grandsons, four generations. 17 (DV)And Job died, an old man and full of days.

The Lord Speaks
38 Then the Lord spoke to Job(AU) out of the storm.(AV) He said:
2 “Who is this that obscures my plans(AW)
with words without knowledge?(AX)
3 Brace yourself like a man;
I will question you,
and you shall answer me.(AY)
4 “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?(AZ)
Tell me, if you understand.(BA)
5 Who marked off its dimensions?(BB) Surely you know!
Who stretched a measuring line(BC) across it?
6 On what were its footings set,(BD)
or who laid its cornerstone(BE)—
7 while the morning stars(BF) sang together(BG)
and all the angels[c](BH) shouted for joy?(BI)
8 “Who shut up the sea behind doors(BJ)
when it burst forth from the womb,(BK)
9 when I made the clouds its garment
and wrapped it in thick darkness,(BL)
10 when I fixed limits for it(BM)
and set its doors and bars in place,(BN)
11 when I said, ‘This far you may come and no farther;(BO)
here is where your proud waves halt’?(BP)
12 “Have you ever given orders to the morning,(BQ)
or shown the dawn its place,(BR)
13 that it might take the earth by the edges
and shake the wicked(BS) out of it?(BT)
14 The earth takes shape like clay under a seal;(BU)
its features stand out like those of a garment.
15 The wicked are denied their light,(BV)

16 “Have you journeyed to the springs of the sea
or walked in the recesses of the deep?(BX)
17 Have the gates of death(BY) been shown to you?

19 “What is the way to the abode of light?

13 “The wings of the ostrich flap joyfully,
though they cannot compare
with the wings and feathers of the stork.(EC)
14 She lays her eggs on the ground
and lets them warm in the sand,
15 unmindful that a foot may crush them,
that some wild animal may trample them.(ED)
16 She treats her young harshly,(EE) as if they were not hers;
she cares not that her labor was in vain,
17 for God did not endow her with wisdom
or give her a share of good sense.(EF)
18 Yet when she spreads her feathers to run,
she laughs(EG) at horse and rider.
19 “Do you give the horse its strength(EH)
or clothe its neck with a flowing mane?
20 Do you make it leap like a locust,(EI)
striking terror(EJ) with its proud snorting?(EK)
21 It paws fiercely, rejoicing in its strength,(EL)

22 It laughs(EN) at fear, afraid of nothing;
it does not shy away from the sword.

24 In frenzied excitement it eats up the ground;

42 Then Job replied to the Lord:
2 “I know that you can do all things;(IB)
no purpose of yours can be thwarted.(IC)
3 You asked, ‘Who is this that obscures my plans without knowledge?’(ID)
Surely I spoke of things I did not understand,
things too wonderful for me to know.(IE)
4 “You said, ‘Listen now, and I will speak;
I will question you,
and you shall answer me.’(IF)
5 My ears had heard of you(IG)
but now my eyes have seen you.(IH)

Epilogue
7 After the Lord had said these things to Job(IL), he said to Eliphaz the Temanite, “I am angry with you and your two friends,(IM) because you have not spoken the truth about me, as my servant Job has.(IN) 8 So now take seven bulls and seven rams(IO) and go to my servant Job(IP) and sacrifice a burnt offering(IQ) for yourselves. My servant Job will pray for you, and I will accept his prayer(IR) and not deal with you according to your folly.(IS) You have not spoken the truth about me, as my servant Job has.”(IT) 9 So Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite(IU) did what the Lord told them; and the Lord accepted Job’s prayer.(IV)
10 After Job had prayed for his friends, the Lord restored his fortunes(IW) and gave him twice as much as he had before.(IX) 11 All his brothers and sisters and everyone who had known him before(IY) came and ate with him in his house. They comforted and consoled him over all the trouble the Lord had brought on him,(IZ) and each one gave him a piece of silver[m] and a gold ring.
12 The Lord blessed the latter part of Job’s life more than the former part. He had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen and a thousand donkeys. 13 And he also had seven sons and three daughters. 14 The first daughter he named Jemimah, the second Keziah and the third Keren-Happuch. 15 Nowhere in all the land were there found women as beautiful as Job’s daughters, and their father granted them an inheritance along with their brothers.
16 After this, Job lived a hundred and forty years; he saw his children and their children to the fourth generation. 17 And so Job died, an old man and full of years.(JA)
