13 Why do you complain to him(A)
that he responds to no one’s words[a]?(B)
14 For God does speak(C)—now one way, now another(D)
    though no one perceives it.(E)
15 In a dream,(F) in a vision(G) of the night,(H)
when deep sleep(I) falls on people
as they slumber in their beds,
16 he may speak(J) in their ears
    and terrify them(K) with warnings,(L)
17 to turn them from wrongdoing
    and keep them from pride,(M)
18 to preserve them from the pit,(N)
their lives from perishing by the sword.[b](O)

19 “Or someone may be chastened(P) on a bed of pain(Q)
with constant distress in their bones,(R)
20 so that their body finds food(S) repulsive
and their soul loathes the choicest meal.(T)
21 Their flesh wastes away to nothing,
and their bones,(U) once hidden, now stick out.(V)
22 They draw near to the pit,(W)
and their life to the messengers of death.[c](X)
23 Yet if there is an angel at their side,
    a messenger,(Y) one out of a thousand,
sent to tell them how to be upright,(Z)
24 and he is gracious to that person and says to God,
‘Spare them from going down to the pit;(AA)
    I have found a ransom for them(AB)
25 let their flesh be renewed(AC) like a child’s;
let them be restored as in the days of their youth’(AD)
26 then that person can pray to God and find favor with him,(AE)
they will see God’s face and shout for joy;(AF)
he will restore them to full well-being.(AG)
27 And they will go to others and say,
    ‘I have sinned,(AH) I have perverted what is right,(AI)
but I did not get what I deserved.(AJ)
28 God has delivered(AK) me from going down to the pit,(AL)
and I shall live to enjoy the light of life.’(AM)

29 “God does all these things to a person(AN)
    twice, even three times(AO)
30 to turn them back(AP) from the pit,(AQ)
that the light of life(AR) may shine on them.(AS)

31 “Pay attention, Job, and listen(AT) to me;(AU)
be silent,(AV) and I will speak.
32 If you have anything to say, answer me;(AW)
speak up, for I want to vindicate you.(AX)
33 But if not, then listen to me;(AY)
be silent,(AZ) and I will teach you wisdom.(BA)

Dealing With a Case of Incest

It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that even pagans do not tolerate: A man is sleeping with his father’s wife.(A) And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather have gone into mourning(B) and have put out of your fellowship(C) the man who has been doing this? For my part, even though I am not physically present, I am with you in spirit.(D) As one who is present with you in this way, I have already passed judgment in the name of our Lord Jesus(E) on the one who has been doing this. So when you are assembled and I am with you in spirit, and the power of our Lord Jesus is present, hand this man over(F) to Satan(G) for the destruction of the flesh,[a][b] so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord.(H)

Your boasting is not good.(I) Don’t you know that a little yeast(J) leavens the whole batch of dough?(K) Get rid of the old yeast, so that you may be a new unleavened batch—as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.(L) Therefore let us keep the Festival, not with the old bread leavened with malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread(M) of sincerity and truth.

I wrote to you in my letter not to associate(N) with sexually immoral people— 10 not at all meaning the people of this world(O) who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world. 11 But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister[c](P) but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater(Q) or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler. Do not even eat with such people.(R)

12 What business is it of mine to judge those outside(S) the church? Are you not to judge those inside?(T) 13 God will judge those outside. “Expel the wicked person from among you.”[d](U)
