Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the Lord.

And the Lord said unto Satan, From whence comest thou? And Satan answered the Lord, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

And the Lord said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.

And Satan answered the Lord, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life.

But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face.

And the Lord said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life.

So went Satan forth from the presence of the Lord, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown.

And he took him a potsherd to scrape himself withal; and he sat down among the ashes.

Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? curse God, and die.

10 But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.

11 Now when Job's three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came every one from his own place; Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite: for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him.

12 And when they lifted up their eyes afar off, and knew him not, they lifted up their voice, and wept; and they rent every one his mantle, and sprinkled dust upon their heads toward heaven.

13 So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spake a word unto him: for they saw that his grief was very great.

After this opened Job his mouth, and cursed his day.

And Job spake, and said,

Let the day perish wherein I was born, and the night in which it was said, There is a man child conceived.

Let that day be darkness; let not God regard it from above, neither let the light shine upon it.

Let darkness and the shadow of death stain it; let a cloud dwell upon it; let the blackness of the day terrify it.

As for that night, let darkness seize upon it; let it not be joined unto the days of the year, let it not come into the number of the months.

Lo, let that night be solitary, let no joyful voice come therein.

Let them curse it that curse the day, who are ready to raise up their mourning.

Let the stars of the twilight thereof be dark; let it look for light, but have none; neither let it see the dawning of the day:

10 Because it shut not up the doors of my mother's womb, nor hid sorrow from mine eyes.

11 Why died I not from the womb? why did I not give up the ghost when I came out of the belly?

12 Why did the knees prevent me? or why the breasts that I should suck?

13 For now should I have lain still and been quiet, I should have slept: then had I been at rest,

14 With kings and counsellors of the earth, which build desolate places for themselves;

15 Or with princes that had gold, who filled their houses with silver:

16 Or as an hidden untimely birth I had not been; as infants which never saw light.

17 There the wicked cease from troubling; and there the weary be at rest.

18 There the prisoners rest together; they hear not the voice of the oppressor.

19 The small and great are there; and the servant is free from his master.

20 Wherefore is light given to him that is in misery, and life unto the bitter in soul;

21 Which long for death, but it cometh not; and dig for it more than for hid treasures;

22 Which rejoice exceedingly, and are glad, when they can find the grave?

23 Why is light given to a man whose way is hid, and whom God hath hedged in?

24 For my sighing cometh before I eat, and my roarings are poured out like the waters.

25 For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me.

26 I was not in safety, neither had I rest, neither was I quiet; yet trouble came.

Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

If we assay to commune with thee, wilt thou be grieved? but who can withhold himself from speaking?

Behold, thou hast instructed many, and thou hast strengthened the weak hands.

Thy words have upholden him that was falling, and thou hast strengthened the feeble knees.

But now it is come upon thee, and thou faintest; it toucheth thee, and thou art troubled.

Is not this thy fear, thy confidence, thy hope, and the uprightness of thy ways?

Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished, being innocent? or where were the righteous cut off?

Even as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, and sow wickedness, reap the same.

By the blast of God they perish, and by the breath of his nostrils are they consumed.

10 The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, and the teeth of the young lions, are broken.

11 The old lion perisheth for lack of prey, and the stout lion's whelps are scattered abroad.

12 Now a thing was secretly brought to me, and mine ear received a little thereof.

13 In thoughts from the visions of the night, when deep sleep falleth on men,

14 Fear came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones to shake.

15 Then a spirit passed before my face; the hair of my flesh stood up:

16 It stood still, but I could not discern the form thereof: an image was before mine eyes, there was silence, and I heard a voice, saying,

17 Shall mortal man be more just than God? shall a man be more pure than his maker?

18 Behold, he put no trust in his servants; and his angels he charged with folly:

19 How much less in them that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, which are crushed before the moth?

20 They are destroyed from morning to evening: they perish for ever without any regarding it.

21 Doth not their excellency which is in them go away? they die, even without wisdom.

Call now, if there be any that will answer thee; and to which of the saints wilt thou turn?

For wrath killeth the foolish man, and envy slayeth the silly one.

I have seen the foolish taking root: but suddenly I cursed his habitation.

His children are far from safety, and they are crushed in the gate, neither is there any to deliver them.

Whose harvest the hungry eateth up, and taketh it even out of the thorns, and the robber swalloweth up their substance.

Although affliction cometh not forth of the dust, neither doth trouble spring out of the ground;

Yet man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward.

I would seek unto God, and unto God would I commit my cause:

Which doeth great things and unsearchable; marvellous things without number:

10 Who giveth rain upon the earth, and sendeth waters upon the fields:

11 To set up on high those that be low; that those which mourn may be exalted to safety.

12 He disappointeth the devices of the crafty, so that their hands cannot perform their enterprise.

13 He taketh the wise in their own craftiness: and the counsel of the froward is carried headlong.

14 They meet with darkness in the day time, and grope in the noonday as in the night.

15 But he saveth the poor from the sword, from their mouth, and from the hand of the mighty.

16 So the poor hath hope, and iniquity stoppeth her mouth.

17 Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty:

18 For he maketh sore, and bindeth up: he woundeth, and his hands make whole.

19 He shall deliver thee in six troubles: yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee.

20 In famine he shall redeem thee from death: and in war from the power of the sword.

21 Thou shalt be hid from the scourge of the tongue: neither shalt thou be afraid of destruction when it cometh.

22 At destruction and famine thou shalt laugh: neither shalt thou be afraid of the beasts of the earth.

23 For thou shalt be in league with the stones of the field: and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee.

24 And thou shalt know that thy tabernacle shall be in peace; and thou shalt visit thy habitation, and shalt not sin.

25 Thou shalt know also that thy seed shall be great, and thine offspring as the grass of the earth.

26 Thou shalt come to thy grave in a full age, like as a shock of corn cometh in in his season.

27 Lo this, we have searched it, so it is; hear it, and know thou it for thy good.

On another day the angels[a](A) came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came with them(B) to present himself before him. And the Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?”

Satan answered the Lord, “From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it.”(C)

Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.(D) And he still maintains his integrity,(E) though you incited me against him to ruin him without any reason.”(F)

“Skin for skin!” Satan replied. “A man will give all he has(G) for his own life. But now stretch out your hand and strike his flesh and bones,(H) and he will surely curse you to your face.”(I)

The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, he is in your hands;(J) but you must spare his life.”(K)

So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord and afflicted Job with painful sores from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head.(L) Then Job took a piece of broken pottery and scraped himself with it as he sat among the ashes.(M)

His wife said to him, “Are you still maintaining your integrity?(N) Curse God and die!”(O)

10 He replied, “You are talking like a foolish[b] woman. Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?”(P)

In all this, Job did not sin in what he said.(Q)

11 When Job’s three friends, Eliphaz the Temanite,(R) Bildad the Shuhite(S) and Zophar the Naamathite,(T) heard about all the troubles that had come upon him, they set out from their homes and met together by agreement to go and sympathize with him and comfort him.(U) 12 When they saw him from a distance, they could hardly recognize him;(V) they began to weep aloud,(W) and they tore their robes(X) and sprinkled dust on their heads.(Y) 13 Then they sat on the ground(Z) with him for seven days and seven nights.(AA) No one said a word to him,(AB) because they saw how great his suffering was.

Job Speaks

After this, Job opened his mouth and cursed the day of his birth.(AC) He said:

“May the day of my birth perish,
    and the night that said, ‘A boy is conceived!’(AD)
That day—may it turn to darkness;
    may God above not care about it;
    may no light shine on it.
May gloom and utter darkness(AE) claim it once more;
    may a cloud settle over it;
    may blackness overwhelm it.
That night—may thick darkness(AF) seize it;
    may it not be included among the days of the year
    nor be entered in any of the months.
May that night be barren;
    may no shout of joy(AG) be heard in it.
May those who curse days[c] curse that day,(AH)
    those who are ready to rouse Leviathan.(AI)
May its morning stars become dark;
    may it wait for daylight in vain
    and not see the first rays of dawn,(AJ)
10 for it did not shut the doors of the womb on me
    to hide trouble from my eyes.

11 “Why did I not perish at birth,
    and die as I came from the womb?(AK)
12 Why were there knees to receive me(AL)
    and breasts that I might be nursed?
13 For now I would be lying down(AM) in peace;
    I would be asleep and at rest(AN)
14 with kings and rulers of the earth,(AO)
    who built for themselves places now lying in ruins,(AP)
15 with princes(AQ) who had gold,
    who filled their houses with silver.(AR)
16 Or why was I not hidden away in the ground like a stillborn child,(AS)
    like an infant who never saw the light of day?(AT)
17 There the wicked cease from turmoil,(AU)
    and there the weary are at rest.(AV)
18 Captives(AW) also enjoy their ease;
    they no longer hear the slave driver’s(AX) shout.(AY)
19 The small and the great are there,(AZ)
    and the slaves are freed from their owners.

20 “Why is light given to those in misery,
    and life to the bitter of soul,(BA)
21 to those who long for death that does not come,(BB)
    who search for it more than for hidden treasure,(BC)
22 who are filled with gladness
    and rejoice when they reach the grave?(BD)
23 Why is life given to a man
    whose way is hidden,(BE)
    whom God has hedged in?(BF)
24 For sighing(BG) has become my daily food;(BH)
    my groans(BI) pour out like water.(BJ)
25 What I feared has come upon me;
    what I dreaded(BK) has happened to me.(BL)
26 I have no peace,(BM) no quietness;
    I have no rest,(BN) but only turmoil.”(BO)

Eliphaz

Then Eliphaz the Temanite(BP) replied:

“If someone ventures a word with you, will you be impatient?
    But who can keep from speaking?(BQ)
Think how you have instructed many,(BR)
    how you have strengthened feeble hands.(BS)
Your words have supported those who stumbled;(BT)
    you have strengthened faltering knees.(BU)
But now trouble comes to you, and you are discouraged;(BV)
    it strikes(BW) you, and you are dismayed.(BX)
Should not your piety be your confidence(BY)
    and your blameless(BZ) ways your hope?

“Consider now: Who, being innocent, has ever perished?(CA)
    Where were the upright ever destroyed?(CB)
As I have observed,(CC) those who plow evil(CD)
    and those who sow trouble reap it.(CE)
At the breath of God(CF) they perish;
    at the blast of his anger they are no more.(CG)
10 The lions may roar(CH) and growl,
    yet the teeth of the great lions(CI) are broken.(CJ)
11 The lion perishes for lack of prey,(CK)
    and the cubs of the lioness are scattered.(CL)

12 “A word(CM) was secretly brought to me,
    my ears caught a whisper(CN) of it.(CO)
13 Amid disquieting dreams in the night,
    when deep sleep falls on people,(CP)
14 fear and trembling(CQ) seized me
    and made all my bones shake.(CR)
15 A spirit glided past my face,
    and the hair on my body stood on end.(CS)
16 It stopped,
    but I could not tell what it was.
A form stood before my eyes,
    and I heard a hushed voice:(CT)
17 ‘Can a mortal be more righteous than God?(CU)
    Can even a strong man be more pure than his Maker?(CV)
18 If God places no trust in his servants,(CW)
    if he charges his angels with error,(CX)
19 how much more those who live in houses of clay,(CY)
    whose foundations(CZ) are in the dust,(DA)
    who are crushed(DB) more readily than a moth!(DC)
20 Between dawn and dusk they are broken to pieces;
    unnoticed, they perish forever.(DD)
21 Are not the cords of their tent pulled up,(DE)
    so that they die(DF) without wisdom?’(DG)

“Call if you will, but who will answer you?(DH)
    To which of the holy ones(DI) will you turn?
Resentment(DJ) kills a fool,
    and envy slays the simple.(DK)
I myself have seen(DL) a fool taking root,(DM)
    but suddenly(DN) his house was cursed.(DO)
His children(DP) are far from safety,(DQ)
    crushed in court(DR) without a defender.(DS)
The hungry consume his harvest,(DT)
    taking it even from among thorns,
    and the thirsty pant after his wealth.
For hardship does not spring from the soil,
    nor does trouble sprout from the ground.(DU)
Yet man is born to trouble(DV)
    as surely as sparks fly upward.

“But if I were you, I would appeal to God;
    I would lay my cause before him.(DW)
He performs wonders(DX) that cannot be fathomed,(DY)
    miracles that cannot be counted.(DZ)
10 He provides rain for the earth;(EA)
    he sends water on the countryside.(EB)
11 The lowly he sets on high,(EC)
    and those who mourn(ED) are lifted(EE) to safety.
12 He thwarts the plans(EF) of the crafty,
    so that their hands achieve no success.(EG)
13 He catches the wise(EH) in their craftiness,(EI)
    and the schemes of the wily are swept away.(EJ)
14 Darkness(EK) comes upon them in the daytime;
    at noon they grope as in the night.(EL)
15 He saves the needy(EM) from the sword in their mouth;
    he saves them from the clutches of the powerful.(EN)
16 So the poor(EO) have hope,
    and injustice shuts its mouth.(EP)

17 “Blessed is the one whom God corrects;(EQ)
    so do not despise the discipline(ER) of the Almighty.[d](ES)
18 For he wounds, but he also binds up;(ET)
    he injures, but his hands also heal.(EU)
19 From six calamities he will rescue(EV) you;
    in seven no harm will touch you.(EW)
20 In famine(EX) he will deliver you from death,
    and in battle from the stroke of the sword.(EY)
21 You will be protected from the lash of the tongue,(EZ)
    and need not fear(FA) when destruction comes.(FB)
22 You will laugh(FC) at destruction and famine,(FD)
    and need not fear the wild animals.(FE)
23 For you will have a covenant(FF) with the stones(FG) of the field,
    and the wild animals will be at peace with you.(FH)
24 You will know that your tent is secure;(FI)
    you will take stock of your property and find nothing missing.(FJ)
25 You will know that your children will be many,(FK)
    and your descendants like the grass of the earth.(FL)
26 You will come to the grave in full vigor,(FM)
    like sheaves gathered in season.(FN)

27 “We have examined this, and it is true.
    So hear it(FO) and apply it to yourself.”(FP)
