⁶ One day the angels^[a](A) came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan^[b](B) also came with them.^{(C) 7} The Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?”

Satan answered the Lord, “From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it.”^(D)

⁸ Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job?^(E) There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God^(F) and shuns evil.”^(G)

⁹ “Does Job fear God for nothing?”^(H) Satan replied. ¹⁰ “Have you not put a hedge^(I) around him and his household and everything he has?^(J) You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land.^{(K) 11} But now stretch out your hand and strike everything he has,^(L) and he will surely curse you to your face.”^(M)

¹² The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, everything he has^(N) is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.”^(O)

Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.

¹³ One day when Job’s sons and daughters^(P) were feasting^(Q) and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house,

³ Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.^(A) And he still maintains his integrity,^(B) though you incited me against him to ruin him without any reason.”^(C)

⁴ “Skin for skin!” Satan replied. “A man will give all he has^(D) for his own life. ⁵ But now stretch out your hand and strike his flesh and bones,^(E) and he will surely curse you to your face.”^(F)

⁶ The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, he is in your hands;^(G) but you must spare his life.”^(H)

⁷ So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord and afflicted Job with painful sores from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head.^{(I) 8} Then Job took a piece of broken pottery and scraped himself with it as he sat among the ashes.^(J)

⁹ His wife said to him, “Are you still maintaining your integrity?^(K) Curse God and die!”^(L)

¹⁰ He replied, “You are talking like a foolish^[a] woman. Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?”^(M)

In all this, Job did not sin in what he said.^(N)

¹¹ When Job’s three friends, Eliphaz the Temanite,^(O) Bildad the Shuhite^(P) and Zophar the Naamathite,^(Q) heard about all the troubles that had come upon him, they set out from their homes and met together by agreement to go and sympathize with him and comfort him.^{(R) 12} When they saw him from a distance, they could hardly recognize him;^(S) they began to weep aloud,^(T) and they tore their robes^(U) and sprinkled dust on their heads.^{(V) 13} Then they sat on the ground^(W) with him for seven days and seven nights.^(X) No one said a word to him,^(Y) because they saw how great his suffering was.

¹² “Son of man, take up a lament^(A) concerning the king of Tyre and say to him: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

¹² Then he continued, “Do not be afraid,^(A) Daniel. Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble^(B) yourself before your God, your words^(C) were heard, and I have come in response to them.^{(D) 13} But the prince^(E) of the Persian kingdom resisted me twenty-one days. Then Michael,^(F) one of the chief princes, came to help me, because I was detained there with the king of Persia. ¹⁴ Now I have come to explain^(G) to you what will happen to your people in the future,^(H) for the vision concerns a time yet to come.^(I)”

Jesus Heals a Demon-Possessed Boy^(A)

¹⁴ When they came to the crowd, a man approached Jesus and knelt before him. ¹⁵ “Lord, have mercy on my son,” he said. “He has seizures^(B) and is suffering greatly. He often falls into the fire or into the water. ¹⁶ I brought him to your disciples, but they could not heal him.”

¹⁷ “You unbelieving and perverse generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.” ¹⁸ Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed at that moment.

¹⁸ Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.^{(A) 19} Therefore go and make disciples of all nations,^(B) baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,^{(C) 20} and teaching^(D) them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you^(E) always, to the very end of the age.”^(F)

Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness^(A)

4 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit,^(B) left the Jordan^(C) and was led by the Spirit^(D) into the wilderness, ² where for forty days^(E) he was tempted^[a] by the devil.^(F) He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.

³ The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God,^(G) tell this stone to become bread.”
