In Pilate’s Court(A)

28 (B)Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Praetorium, and it was early morning. (C)But they themselves did not go into the [a]Praetorium, lest they should be defiled, but that they might eat the Passover. 29 (D)Pilate then went out to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this Man?”

30 They answered and said to him, “If He were not [b]an evildoer, we would not have delivered Him up to you.”

31 Then Pilate said to them, “You take Him and judge Him according to your law.”

Therefore the Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death,” 32 (E)that the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled which He spoke, (F)signifying by what death He would die.

33 (G)Then Pilate entered the [c]Praetorium again, called Jesus, and said to Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?”

34 Jesus answered him, “Are you speaking for yourself about this, or did others tell you this concerning Me?”

35 Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered You to me. What have You done?”

36 (H)Jesus answered, (I)“My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here.”

37 Pilate therefore said to Him, “Are You a king then?”

Jesus answered, “You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, (J)that I should bear (K)witness to the truth. Everyone who (L)is of the truth (M)hears My voice.”

38 Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?” And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, (N)“I find no fault in Him at all.

Taking the Place of Barabbas(O)

39 (P)“But you have a custom that I should release someone to you at the Passover. Do you therefore want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”

40 (Q)Then they all cried again, saying, “Not this Man, but Barabbas!” (R)Now Barabbas was a robber.

The Soldiers Mock Jesus(S)

19 So then (T)Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him. And the soldiers twisted a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and they put on Him a purple robe. [d]Then they said, “Hail, King of the Jews!” And they (U)struck Him with their hands.

Pilate then went out again, and said to them, “Behold, I am bringing Him out to you, (V)that you may know that I find no fault in Him.”

Pilate’s Decision

Then Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them, “Behold the Man!”

(W)Therefore, when the chief priests and officers saw Him, they cried out, saying, “Crucify Him, crucify Him!

Pilate said to them, “You take Him and crucify Him, for I find no fault in Him.”

The Jews answered him, (X)“We have a law, and according to [e]our law He ought to die, because (Y)He made Himself the Son of God.”

Therefore, when Pilate heard that saying, he was the more afraid, and went again into the Praetorium, and said to Jesus, “Where are You from?” (Z)But Jesus gave him no answer.

10 Then Pilate said to Him, “Are You not speaking to me? Do You not know that I have [f]power to crucify You, and power to release You?”

11 Jesus answered, (AA)“You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above. Therefore (AB)the one who delivered Me to you has the greater sin.”

12 From then on Pilate sought to release Him, but the Jews cried out, saying, “If you let this Man go, you are not Caesar’s friend. (AC)Whoever makes himself a king speaks against Caesar.”

13 (AD)When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus out and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha. 14 Now (AE)it was the Preparation Day of the Passover, and about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, “Behold your King!”

15 But they cried out, “Away with Him, away with Him! Crucify Him!”

Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?”

The chief priests answered, (AF)“We have no king but Caesar!”

16 (AG)Then he delivered Him to them to be crucified. Then they took Jesus [g]and led Him away.

Jesus Before Pilate(A)

28 Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor.(B) By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace,(C) because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover.(D) 29 So Pilate came out to them and asked, “What charges are you bringing against this man?”

30 “If he were not a criminal,” they replied, “we would not have handed him over to you.”

31 Pilate said, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.”

“But we have no right to execute anyone,” they objected. 32 This took place to fulfill what Jesus had said about the kind of death he was going to die.(E)

33 Pilate then went back inside the palace,(F) summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”(G)

34 “Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked, “or did others talk to you about me?”

35 “Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?”

36 Jesus said, “My kingdom(H) is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders.(I) But now my kingdom is from another place.”(J)

37 “You are a king, then!” said Pilate.

Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth.(K) Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”(L)

38 “What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him.(M) 39 But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release ‘the king of the Jews’?”

40 They shouted back, “No, not him! Give us Barabbas!” Now Barabbas had taken part in an uprising.(N)

Jesus Sentenced to Be Crucified(O)

19 Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.(P) The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe and went up to him again and again, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!”(Q) And they slapped him in the face.(R)

Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews gathered there, “Look, I am bringing him out(S) to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him.”(T) When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe,(U) Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!”

As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify!”

But Pilate answered, “You take him and crucify him.(V) As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him.”(W)

The Jewish leaders insisted, “We have a law, and according to that law he must die,(X) because he claimed to be the Son of God.”(Y)

When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid, and he went back inside the palace.(Z) “Where do you come from?” he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer.(AA) 10 “Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?”

11 Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above.(AB) Therefore the one who handed me over to you(AC) is guilty of a greater sin.”

12 From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, “If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king(AD) opposes Caesar.”

13 When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge’s seat(AE) at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic(AF) is Gabbatha). 14 It was the day of Preparation(AG) of the Passover; it was about noon.(AH)

“Here is your king,”(AI) Pilate said to the Jews.

15 But they shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!”

“Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked.

“We have no king but Caesar,” the chief priests answered.

16 Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified.(AJ)

The Crucifixion of Jesus(AK)
