Jeremiah 2:19
New International Version
Jeremiah 2:12-24
New International Version
12 Be appalled at this, you heavens,
and shudder with great horror,”
declares the Lord.
13 “My people have committed two sins:
They have forsaken(A) me,
the spring of living water,(B)
and have dug their own cisterns,
broken cisterns that cannot hold water.
14 Is Israel a servant, a slave(C) by birth?
Why then has he become plunder?
15 Lions(D) have roared;
they have growled at him.
They have laid waste(E) his land;
his towns are burned(F) and deserted.(G)
16 Also, the men of Memphis(H) and Tahpanhes(I)
have cracked your skull.
17 Have you not brought this on yourselves(J)
by forsaking(K) the Lord your God
when he led you in the way?
18 Now why go to Egypt(L)
to drink water from the Nile[a]?(M)
And why go to Assyria(N)
to drink water from the Euphrates?(O)
19 Your wickedness will punish you;
your backsliding(P) will rebuke(Q) you.
Consider then and realize
how evil and bitter(R) it is for you
when you forsake(S) the Lord your God
and have no awe(T) of me,”
declares the Lord, the Lord Almighty.
20 “Long ago you broke off your yoke(U)
and tore off your bonds;(V)
you said, ‘I will not serve you!’(W)
Indeed, on every high hill(X)
and under every spreading tree(Y)
you lay down as a prostitute.(Z)
21 I had planted(AA) you like a choice vine(AB)
of sound and reliable stock.
How then did you turn against me
into a corrupt,(AC) wild vine?
22 Although you wash(AD) yourself with soap(AE)
and use an abundance of cleansing powder,
the stain of your guilt is still before me,”
declares the Sovereign Lord.(AF)
23 “How can you say, ‘I am not defiled;(AG)
I have not run after the Baals’?(AH)
See how you behaved in the valley;(AI)
consider what you have done.
You are a swift she-camel
running(AJ) here and there,
24 a wild donkey(AK) accustomed to the desert,(AL)
sniffing the wind in her craving—
in her heat who can restrain her?
Any males that pursue her need not tire themselves;
at mating time they will find her.
