Hananiah’s False Prophecy

28 Now in the same year, (A)in the beginning of the reign of (B)Zedekiah king of Judah, in the fourth year, in the fifth month, (C)Hananiah the prophet the son of Azzur, who was from (D)Gibeon, spoke to me at the house of the Lord in the sight of the priests and all the people, saying, (E)This is what the Lord of armies, the God of Israel says: ‘I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon. Within two years I am going to bring back to this place (F)all the vessels of the Lords house, which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took from this place and brought to Babylon. I am (G)also going to bring back to this place (H)Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and all the (I)exiles of Judah who went to Babylon,’ declares the Lord, ‘for I will break the (J)yoke of the king of Babylon.’”

Then Jeremiah the prophet spoke to the prophet Hananiah in the sight of the priests and in the sight of all the people who were standing at the (K)house of the Lord, and Jeremiah the prophet said, “(L)Amen! May the Lord do so; may the Lord fulfill your words which you have prophesied, to bring back the vessels of the Lords house and all the exiles, from Babylon to this place. Yet (M)hear now this word which I am going to speak [a]so that you and all the people can hear it! The prophets who were before me and before you from ancient times also (N)prophesied against many lands and against great kingdoms regarding war, disaster, and plague. As for the prophet who prophesies of peace, (O)when the word of the prophet comes to pass, then that prophet will be known as one whom the Lord has truly sent.”

10 Then Hananiah the prophet took the (P)yoke from the neck of Jeremiah the prophet and broke it. 11 Hananiah spoke in the sight of all the people, saying, “(Q)This is what the Lord says: ‘Even so within two full years I will break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon from the neck of all the nations.’” Then Jeremiah the prophet went his way.

12 Then the (R)word of the Lord came to Jeremiah after Hananiah the prophet had broken the yoke from the neck of Jeremiah the prophet, saying, 13 “Go and speak to Hananiah, saying, ‘This is what the Lord says: “You have broken the yokes of wood, but in their place you have made (S)yokes of iron.” 14 For this is what the Lord of armies, the God of Israel says: “I have put a (T)yoke of iron on the neck of all these nations, to serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; and they shall (U)serve him. And (V)I have also given him the animals of the field.”’” 15 Then Jeremiah the prophet said to Hananiah the prophet, “Listen now, Hananiah: the Lord has not sent you, and (W)you have made this people trust in a lie. 16 Therefore, this is what the Lord says: ‘(X)Behold, I am going to [b]remove you from the face of the earth. This year you are going to (Y)die, because you (Z)spoke falsely against the Lord.’”

17 So Hananiah the prophet died in the same year, in the seventh month.

Message to the Exiles

29 Now these are the words of the (AA)letter which Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem to the rest of the elders of the exile, the priests, the prophets, and all the people whom Nebuchadnezzar had taken into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon. (This was after King (AB)Jeconiah and the (AC)queen mother, the high officials, the leaders of Judah and Jerusalem, the craftsmen, and the metalworkers had departed from Jerusalem.) The letter was sent by the hand of Elasah the son of Shaphan and Gemariah the son of (AD)Hilkiah, whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent to Babylon to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, saying, “This is what the Lord of armies, the God of Israel, says to all the exiles whom I have (AE)sent into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: (AF)Build houses and live in them; and plant gardens and eat their [c]produce. Take (AG)wives and father sons and daughters, and take wives for your sons and give your daughters to husbands, so that they may give birth to sons and daughters; and grow in numbers there and do not decrease. (AH)Seek the [d]prosperity of the city where I have sent you into exile, and (AI)pray to the Lord in its behalf; for [e]in its [f]prosperity will be your [g]prosperity.’ For this is what the Lord of armies, the God of Israel says: ‘Do not let your (AJ)prophets who are in your midst or your diviners (AK)deceive you, and do not listen to their interpretations of (AL)your dreams which you dream. For they (AM)prophesy falsely to you in My name; (AN)I have not sent them,’ declares the Lord.

10 “For this is what the Lord says: ‘When (AO)seventy years have been completed for Babylon, I will visit you and fulfill My (AP)good word to you, to bring you back to this place. 11 For I know the (AQ)plans that I [h]have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans for [i](AR)prosperity and not for disaster, to give you a future and a (AS)hope. 12 Then you will (AT)call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will (AU)listen to you. 13 And you will (AV)seek Me and find Me when you (AW)search for Me with all your heart. 14 I will let Myself be (AX)found by you,’ declares the Lord, ‘and I will (AY)restore your fortunes and (AZ)gather you from all the nations and all the places where I have driven you,’ declares the Lord, ‘and I will (BA)bring you back to the place from where I sent you into exile.’

15 “Because you have said, ‘The Lord has raised up (BB)prophets for us in Babylon’— 16 for this is what the Lord says concerning the king who sits on the throne of David, and concerning all the people who live in this city, your brothers who did (BC)not go with you into exile— 17 this is what the Lord of armies says: ‘Behold, I am sending upon them the (BD)sword, famine, and plague; and I will make them like (BE)rotten figs that cannot be eaten due to rottenness. 18 I will pursue them with the sword, with famine, and with plague; and I will (BF)make them an object of terror to all the kingdoms of the earth, to be a (BG)curse and an object of horror and [j](BH)hissing, and a disgrace among all the nations where I have driven them, 19 because they have (BI)not listened to My words,’ declares the Lord, ‘which I sent to them again and again by (BJ)My servants the prophets; but you did not listen,’ declares the Lord. 20 ‘You, therefore, hear the word of the Lord, all you exiles, whom I have (BK)sent away from Jerusalem to Babylon.

21 ‘This is what the Lord of armies, the God of Israel says concerning Ahab the son of Kolaiah and concerning Zedekiah the son of Maaseiah, who are (BL)prophesying to you falsely in My name: “Behold, I am going to hand them over to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he will kill them before your eyes. 22 Because of them a (BM)curse will be [k]used by all the exiles from Judah who are in Babylon, saying, ‘May the Lord make you like Zedekiah and Ahab, whom the king of Babylon (BN)roasted in the fire,’ 23 because they (BO)acted [l]foolishly in Israel, and (BP)committed adultery with their neighbors’ wives, and falsely (BQ)spoke words in My name which I did not command them. I am He who (BR)knows, and a witness,” declares the Lord.’”

24 Now you shall speak to (BS)Shemaiah the Nehelamite, saying, 25 “This is what the Lord of armies, the God of Israel says: ‘Because you have sent (BT)letters in your own name to all the people who are in Jerusalem, and to (BU)the priest Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, and to all the priests, saying, 26 “The Lord has made you priest instead of Jehoiada the priest, to be the [m](BV)overseer of the house of the Lord for every (BW)insane person who (BX)prophesies, to (BY)put him in the stocks and in the iron collar. 27 So now, why have you not rebuked Jeremiah of (BZ)Anathoth who prophesies to you, 28 seeing that he has (CA)sent word to us in Babylon, saying, ‘[n]The exile will be (CB)long; (CC)build houses and live in them, and plant gardens and eat their [o]produce’?”’”

29 Now (CD)Zephaniah the priest read this letter [p]to Jeremiah the prophet. 30 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying, 31 “Send word to (CE)all the exiles, saying, ‘This is what the Lord says concerning (CF)Shemaiah the Nehelamite: “Because Shemaiah has (CG)prophesied to you, although I did not send him, and he has (CH)made you trust in a lie,” 32 therefore this is what the Lord says: “Behold, I am going to (CI)punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite and his [q]descendants; he will (CJ)not have anyone living among this people, (CK)and he will not see the good that I am going to do for My people,” declares the Lord, “because he has (CL)spoken falsely against the Lord.”’”

Liberation from Captivity Promised

30 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel says: ‘(CM)Write all the words which I have spoken to you in a book. For behold, (CN)days are coming,’ declares the Lord, ‘when I will (CO)restore the fortunes of My people (CP)Israel and Judah.’ The Lord says, ‘I will also (CQ)bring them back to the land that I gave to their forefathers, and they shall take possession of it.’”

Now these are the words which the Lord spoke concerning Israel and Judah:

“For this is what the Lord says:

[r]I have heard a sound of (CR)terror,
Of fear, and there is no peace.
Ask now, and see
If a male can give birth.
Why do I see every man
With his hands on his waist, (CS)as a woman in childbirth?
And why have all faces turned pale?
Woe, for that (CT)day is great,
There is (CU)none like it;
And it is the time of Jacob’s (CV)distress,
Yet he will be (CW)saved from it.

‘It shall come about on that day,’ declares the Lord of armies, ‘that I will (CX)break his yoke from [s]their necks and will tear to pieces [t]their (CY)restraints; and strangers will no longer (CZ)make [u]them their slaves. But they shall serve the Lord their God and (DA)David their king, whom I will raise up for them.

10 And (DB)do not fear, Jacob My servant,’ declares the Lord,
‘And do not be dismayed, Israel;
For behold, I am going to save you (DC)from far away,
And your [v]descendants from the land of their captivity.
And Jacob will return and be (DD)at peace, without anxiety,
And (DE)no one will make him afraid.
11 For (DF)I am with you,’ declares the Lord, ‘to save you;
For I will completely (DG)destroy all the nations where I have scattered you,
Only I will (DH)not destroy you completely.
But I will (DI)discipline you fairly
And will by no means leave you unpunished.’

12 “For this is what the Lord says:
‘Your broken limb is irreparable,
And your (DJ)wound is incurable.
13 There is no one to plead your cause;
No healing for your sore,
(DK)No recovery for you.
14 All your (DL)lovers have forgotten you,
They do not seek you;
For I have (DM)wounded you with the wound of an enemy,
With the (DN)punishment of a (DO)cruel one,
Because your (DP)wrongdoing is great,
And your (DQ)sins are numerous.
15 Why do you cry out over your injury?
Your pain is incurable.
Because your wrongdoing is great
And your sins are numerous,
I have done these things to you.
16 Therefore all who (DR)devour you will be devoured;
And all your adversaries, every one of them, (DS)will go into captivity;
And those who plunder you will become plunder,
And all who plunder you I will turn into plunder.
17 For I will [w]restore you to [x](DT)health
And I will heal you of your wounds,’ declares the Lord,
‘Because they have called you an (DU)outcast, saying:
“It is Zion; no one [y]cares for her.”’

Restoration of Jacob

18 “This is what the Lord says:
‘Behold, I will (DV)restore the fortunes of the tents of Jacob
And (DW)have compassion on his dwellings;
And the (DX)city will be rebuilt on its ruins,
And the (DY)palace will stand on its rightful place.
19 From them will come a (DZ)song of thanksgiving
And the voices of those who [z](EA)celebrate;
And I will (EB)multiply them and they will not decrease;
I will (EC)honor them and they will not be insignificant.
20 [aa]Their children also will be as before,
And [ab]their congregation will be (ED)established before Me;
And I will punish all [ac]their oppressors.
21 [ad]Their (EE)leader shall be one of them,
And [ae]their ruler will come out from [af]their midst;
And I will (EF)bring him near and he shall approach Me;
For [ag]who would dare to risk his life to (EG)approach Me?’ declares the Lord.
22 ‘You shall be (EH)My people,
And I will be your God.’”

23 Behold, the (EI)tempest of the Lord!
Wrath has gone forth,
A [ah]sweeping tempest;
It will whirl upon the head of the wicked.
24 The (EJ)fierce anger of the Lord will not turn back
Until He has performed and accomplished
The intent of His heart.
In the (EK)latter days you will understand this.

The False Prophet Hananiah

28 In the fifth month of that same year, the fourth year, early in the reign of Zedekiah(A) king of Judah, the prophet Hananiah son of Azzur, who was from Gibeon,(B) said to me in the house of the Lord in the presence of the priests and all the people: “This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: ‘I will break the yoke(C) of the king of Babylon. Within two years I will bring back to this place all the articles(D) of the Lord’s house that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon removed from here and took to Babylon. I will also bring back to this place Jehoiachin[a](E) son of Jehoiakim king of Judah and all the other exiles from Judah who went to Babylon,’ declares the Lord, ‘for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon.’”(F)

Then the prophet Jeremiah replied to the prophet Hananiah before the priests and all the people who were standing in the house of the Lord. He said, “Amen! May the Lord do so! May the Lord fulfill the words you have prophesied by bringing the articles of the Lord’s house and all the exiles back to this place from Babylon.(G) Nevertheless, listen to what I have to say in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people: From early times the prophets who preceded you and me have prophesied war, disaster and plague(H) against many countries and great kingdoms. But the prophet who prophesies peace will be recognized as one truly sent by the Lord only if his prediction comes true.(I)

10 Then the prophet Hananiah took the yoke(J) off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah and broke it, 11 and he said(K) before all the people, “This is what the Lord says: ‘In the same way I will break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon off the neck of all the nations within two years.’” At this, the prophet Jeremiah went on his way.

12 After the prophet Hananiah had broken the yoke off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah, the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 13 “Go and tell Hananiah, ‘This is what the Lord says: You have broken a wooden yoke, but in its place you will get a yoke of iron. 14 This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: I will put an iron yoke(L) on the necks of all these nations to make them serve(M) Nebuchadnezzar(N) king of Babylon, and they will serve him. I will even give him control over the wild animals.(O)’”

15 Then the prophet Jeremiah said to Hananiah the prophet, “Listen, Hananiah! The Lord has not sent(P) you, yet you have persuaded this nation to trust in lies.(Q) 16 Therefore this is what the Lord says: ‘I am about to remove you from the face of the earth.(R) This very year you are going to die,(S) because you have preached rebellion(T) against the Lord.’”

17 In the seventh month of that same year, Hananiah the prophet died.(U)

A Letter to the Exiles

29 This is the text of the letter(V) that the prophet Jeremiah sent from Jerusalem to the surviving elders among the exiles and to the priests, the prophets and all the other people Nebuchadnezzar had carried into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon.(W) (This was after King Jehoiachin[b](X) and the queen mother,(Y) the court officials and the leaders of Judah and Jerusalem, the skilled workers and the artisans had gone into exile from Jerusalem.) He entrusted the letter to Elasah son of Shaphan and to Gemariah son of Hilkiah, whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent to King Nebuchadnezzar in Babylon. It said:

This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says to all those I carried(Z) into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: “Build(AA) houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce. Marry and have sons and daughters; find wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage, so that they too may have sons and daughters. Increase in number there; do not decrease.(AB) Also, seek(AC) the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray(AD) to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.” Yes, this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: “Do not let the prophets(AE) and diviners among you deceive(AF) you. Do not listen to the dreams(AG) you encourage them to have.(AH) They are prophesying lies(AI) to you in my name. I have not sent(AJ) them,” declares the Lord.

10 This is what the Lord says: “When seventy years(AK) are completed for Babylon, I will come to you(AL) and fulfill my good promise(AM) to bring you back(AN) to this place. 11 For I know the plans(AO) I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper(AP) you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.(AQ) 12 Then you will call(AR) on me and come and pray(AS) to me, and I will listen(AT) to you. 13 You will seek(AU) me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.(AV) 14 I will be found by you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back(AW) from captivity.[c] I will gather you from all the nations and places where I have banished you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back to the place from which I carried you into exile.”(AX)

15 You may say, “The Lord has raised up prophets for us in Babylon,” 16 but this is what the Lord says about the king who sits on David’s throne and all the people who remain in this city, your fellow citizens who did not go with you into exile— 17 yes, this is what the Lord Almighty says: “I will send the sword, famine and plague(AY) against them and I will make them like figs(AZ) that are so bad they cannot be eaten. 18 I will pursue them with the sword, famine and plague and will make them abhorrent(BA) to all the kingdoms of the earth, a curse[d](BB) and an object of horror,(BC) of scorn(BD) and reproach, among all the nations where I drive them. 19 For they have not listened to my words,”(BE) declares the Lord, “words that I sent to them again and again(BF) by my servants the prophets.(BG) And you exiles have not listened either,” declares the Lord.

20 Therefore, hear the word of the Lord, all you exiles whom I have sent(BH) away from Jerusalem to Babylon. 21 This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says about Ahab son of Kolaiah and Zedekiah son of Maaseiah, who are prophesying lies(BI) to you in my name: “I will deliver them into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he will put them to death before your very eyes. 22 Because of them, all the exiles from Judah who are in Babylon will use this curse: ‘May the Lord treat you like Zedekiah and Ahab, whom the king of Babylon burned(BJ) in the fire.’ 23 For they have done outrageous things in Israel; they have committed adultery(BK) with their neighbors’ wives, and in my name they have uttered lies—which I did not authorize. I know(BL) it and am a witness(BM) to it,” declares the Lord.

Message to Shemaiah

24 Tell Shemaiah the Nehelamite, 25 “This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: You sent letters in your own name to all the people in Jerusalem, to the priest Zephaniah(BN) son of Maaseiah, and to all the other priests. You said to Zephaniah, 26 ‘The Lord has appointed you priest in place of Jehoiada to be in charge of the house of the Lord; you should put any maniac(BO) who acts like a prophet into the stocks(BP) and neck-irons. 27 So why have you not reprimanded Jeremiah from Anathoth, who poses as a prophet among you? 28 He has sent this message(BQ) to us in Babylon: It will be a long time.(BR) Therefore build(BS) houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce.’”

29 Zephaniah(BT) the priest, however, read the letter to Jeremiah the prophet. 30 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 31 “Send this message to all the exiles: ‘This is what the Lord says about Shemaiah(BU) the Nehelamite: Because Shemaiah has prophesied to you, even though I did not send(BV) him, and has persuaded you to trust in lies, 32 this is what the Lord says: I will surely punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite and his descendants.(BW) He will have no one left among this people, nor will he see the good(BX) things I will do for my people, declares the Lord, because he has preached rebellion(BY) against me.’”

Restoration of Israel

30 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Write(BZ) in a book all the words I have spoken to you. The days(CA) are coming,’ declares the Lord, ‘when I will bring(CB) my people Israel and Judah back from captivity[e] and restore(CC) them to the land I gave their ancestors to possess,’ says the Lord.”

These are the words the Lord spoke concerning Israel and Judah: “This is what the Lord says:

“‘Cries of fear(CD) are heard—
    terror, not peace.
Ask and see:
    Can a man bear children?
Then why do I see every strong man
    with his hands on his stomach like a woman in labor,(CE)
    every face turned deathly pale?(CF)
How awful that day(CG) will be!
    No other will be like it.
It will be a time of trouble(CH) for Jacob,
    but he will be saved(CI) out of it.

“‘In that day,’ declares the Lord Almighty,
    ‘I will break the yoke(CJ) off their necks
and will tear off their bonds;(CK)
    no longer will foreigners enslave them.(CL)
Instead, they will serve the Lord their God
    and David(CM) their king,(CN)
    whom I will raise up for them.

10 “‘So do not be afraid,(CO) Jacob my servant;(CP)
    do not be dismayed, Israel,’
declares the Lord.
‘I will surely save(CQ) you out of a distant place,
    your descendants from the land of their exile.
Jacob will again have peace and security,(CR)
    and no one will make him afraid.(CS)
11 I am with you(CT) and will save you,’
    declares the Lord.
‘Though I completely destroy all the nations
    among which I scatter you,
    I will not completely destroy(CU) you.
I will discipline(CV) you but only in due measure;
    I will not let you go entirely unpunished.’(CW)

12 “This is what the Lord says:

“‘Your wound(CX) is incurable,
    your injury beyond healing.(CY)
13 There is no one to plead your cause,(CZ)
    no remedy for your sore,
    no healing(DA) for you.
14 All your allies(DB) have forgotten you;
    they care nothing for you.
I have struck you as an enemy(DC) would
    and punished you as would the cruel,(DD)
because your guilt is so great
    and your sins(DE) so many.
15 Why do you cry out over your wound,
    your pain that has no cure?(DF)
Because of your great guilt and many sins
    I have done these things to you.(DG)

16 “‘But all who devour(DH) you will be devoured;
    all your enemies will go into exile.(DI)
Those who plunder(DJ) you will be plundered;
    all who make spoil of you I will despoil.
17 But I will restore you to health
    and heal(DK) your wounds,’
declares the Lord,
‘because you are called an outcast,(DL)
    Zion for whom no one cares.’(DM)

18 “This is what the Lord says:

“‘I will restore the fortunes(DN) of Jacob’s tents(DO)
    and have compassion(DP) on his dwellings;
the city will be rebuilt(DQ) on her ruins,
    and the palace will stand in its proper place.
19 From them will come songs(DR) of thanksgiving(DS)
    and the sound of rejoicing.(DT)
I will add to their numbers,(DU)
    and they will not be decreased;
I will bring them honor,(DV)
    and they will not be disdained.
20 Their children(DW) will be as in days of old,
    and their community will be established(DX) before me;
    I will punish(DY) all who oppress them.
21 Their leader(DZ) will be one of their own;
    their ruler will arise from among them.(EA)
I will bring him near(EB) and he will come close to me—
    for who is he who will devote himself
    to be close to me?’
declares the Lord.
22 “‘So you will be my people,(EC)
    and I will be your God.(ED)’”

23 See, the storm(EE) of the Lord
    will burst out in wrath,
a driving wind swirling down
    on the heads of the wicked.
24 The fierce anger(EF) of the Lord will not turn back(EG)
    until he fully accomplishes
    the purposes of his heart.
In days to come
    you will understand(EH) this.

Children of God Love One Another

See [a](A)how great a love the Father has given us, that we would be called (B)children of God; and in fact we are. For this reason the world does not know us: because (C)it did not know Him. (D)Beloved, now we are (E)children of God, and (F)it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He (G)appears, we will be (H)like Him, because we will (I)see Him just as He is. And everyone who has this (J)hope set on Him (K)purifies himself, just as He is pure.

Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and (L)sin is lawlessness. You know that He (M)appeared in order to (N)take away sins; and (O)in Him there is no sin. No one who remains in Him (P)sins continually; no one who sins continually has seen Him or [b](Q)knows Him. (R)Little children, make sure no one (S)deceives you; (T)the one who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous; the one who practices sin is (U)of the devil; for the devil [c]has been sinning from the beginning. (V)The Son of God (W)appeared for this purpose, (X)to destroy the works of the devil. No one who has been (Y)born of God practices sin, because His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin continually, because he has been born of God. 10 By this the (Z)children of God and the (AA)children of the devil are obvious: [d]anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor the one who (AB)does not love his (AC)brother and sister.

11 (AD)For this is the message (AE)which you have heard from the beginning, (AF)that we are to love one another; 12 not as (AG)Cain, who was of (AH)the evil one and murdered his brother. And for what reason did he murder him? Because (AI)his own deeds were evil, but his brother’s were righteous.

13 Do not be surprised, brothers and sisters, if (AJ)the world hates you. 14 We know that we have (AK)passed out of death into life, (AL)because we love the brothers and sisters. The one who does not love remains in death. 15 Everyone who (AM)hates his brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that (AN)no murderer has eternal life remaining in him. 16 We know love by this, that (AO)He laid down His life for us; and (AP)we ought to lay down our lives for the (AQ)brothers and sisters. 17 But (AR)whoever has worldly goods and sees his brother or sister in need, and (AS)closes his [e]heart [f]against him, (AT)how does the love of God remain in him? 18 (AU)Little children, let’s not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and (AV)truth. 19 We will know by this that we are (AW)of the truth, and will set our heart at ease before Him, 20 that if our heart condemns us, that God is greater than our heart, and He knows all things. 21 (AX)Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have (AY)confidence [g]before God; 22 and (AZ)whatever we ask, we receive from Him, because we (BA)keep His commandments and do (BB)the things that are pleasing in His sight.

23 This is His commandment, that we [h](BC)believe in (BD)the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as (BE)He [i]commanded us. 24 The one who (BF)keeps His commandments (BG)remains in Him, and He in him. (BH)We know by this that (BI)He remains in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.

See what great love(A) the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!(B) And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.(C) Dear friends,(D) now we are children of God,(E) and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears,[a](F) we shall be like him,(G) for we shall see him as he is.(H) All who have this hope in him purify themselves,(I) just as he is pure.(J)

Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness.(K) But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins.(L) And in him is no sin.(M) No one who lives in him keeps on sinning.(N) No one who continues to sin has either seen him(O) or known him.(P)

Dear children,(Q) do not let anyone lead you astray.(R) The one who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous.(S) The one who does what is sinful is of the devil,(T) because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God(U) appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.(V) No one who is born of God(W) will continue to sin,(X) because God’s seed(Y) remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God. 10 This is how we know who the children of God(Z) are and who the children of the devil(AA) are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love(AB) their brother and sister.(AC)

More on Love and Hatred

11 For this is the message you heard(AD) from the beginning:(AE) We should love one another.(AF) 12 Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one(AG) and murdered his brother.(AH) And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother’s were righteous.(AI) 13 Do not be surprised, my brothers and sisters,[b] if the world hates you.(AJ) 14 We know that we have passed from death to life,(AK) because we love each other. Anyone who does not love remains in death.(AL) 15 Anyone who hates a brother or sister(AM) is a murderer,(AN) and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him.(AO)

16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us.(AP) And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.(AQ) 17 If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them,(AR) how can the love of God be in that person?(AS) 18 Dear children,(AT) let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.(AU)

19 This is how we know that we belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence: 20 If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. 21 Dear friends,(AV) if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God(AW) 22 and receive from him anything we ask,(AX) because we keep his commands(AY) and do what pleases him.(AZ) 23 And this is his command: to believe(BA) in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ,(BB) and to love one another as he commanded us.(BC) 24 The one who keeps God’s commands(BD) lives in him,(BE) and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.(BF)
