¹⁰ I have determined to do this city harm^(A) and not good, declares the Lord. It will be given into the hands^(B) of the king of Babylon, and he will destroy it with fire.’^(C)

⁷ But Ebed-Melek,^(A) a Cushite,^[a] an official^[b](B) in the royal palace, heard that they had put Jeremiah into the cistern. While the king was sitting in the Benjamin Gate,^(C)

¹² Ebed-Melek the Cushite said to Jeremiah, “Put these old rags and worn-out clothes under your arms to pad the ropes.” Jeremiah did so,

⁶ But did not my words^(A) and my decrees, which I commanded my servants the prophets, overtake your ancestors?^(B)

“Then they repented and said, ‘The Lord Almighty has done to us what our ways and practices deserve,^(C) just as he determined to do.’”^(D)
