Evil in the Land

The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: (A)“Stand in the gate of the Lord's house, and proclaim there this word, and say, Hear the word of the Lord, all you men of Judah who enter these gates to worship the Lord. Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: (B)Amend your ways and your deeds, and I will let you dwell in this place. (C)Do not trust in these deceptive words: ‘This is the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord.’

“For if you truly (D)amend your ways and your deeds, if you truly (E)execute justice one with another, if you (F)do not oppress the sojourner, the fatherless, or the widow, (G)or shed innocent blood in this place, (H)and if you do not go after other gods to your own harm, (I)then I will let you dwell in this place, (J)in the land that I gave of old to your fathers forever.

“Behold, you trust in deceptive words to no avail. (K)Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, (L)swear falsely, (M)make offerings to Baal, (N)and go after other gods that you have not known, 10 and then come and stand before me in this house, (O)which is called by my name, and say, ‘We are delivered!’—only to go on doing all these abominations? 11 (P)Has this house, (Q)which is called by my name, (R)become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, I myself have seen it, declares the Lord. 12 Go now to (S)my place that was in Shiloh, (T)where I made my name dwell at first, and (U)see what I did to it because of the evil of my people Israel. 13 And now, because you have done all these things, declares the Lord, and (V)when I spoke to you persistently you did not listen, and (W)when I called you, you did not answer, 14 therefore I will do to (X)the house (Y)that is called by my name, and in which you trust, and to the place that I gave to you and to your fathers, (Z)as I did to Shiloh. 15 (AA)And I will cast you out of my sight, (AB)as I cast out all your kinsmen, all the offspring of (AC)Ephraim.

16 “As for you, (AD)do not pray for this people, or lift up a cry or prayer for them, and do not intercede with me, for I will not hear you. 17 Do you not see what they are doing in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? 18 The children gather wood, the fathers kindle fire, (AE)and the women knead dough, to (AF)make cakes for (AG)the queen of heaven. And (AH)they pour out drink offerings to other gods, (AI)to provoke me to anger. 19 (AJ)Is it I whom they provoke? declares the Lord. Is it not themselves, (AK)to their own shame? 20 Therefore thus says the Lord God: Behold, (AL)my anger and my wrath will be poured out on this place, upon man and beast, upon the trees of the field and the fruit of the ground; (AM)it will burn and not be quenched.”

21 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: (AN)“Add your burnt offerings to your sacrifices, and eat the flesh. 22 For in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, I did not speak to your fathers or command them (AO)concerning burnt offerings and sacrifices. 23 But this command I gave them: (AP)‘Obey my voice, and (AQ)I will be your God, and you shall be my people. (AR)And walk in all the way that I command you, (AS)that it may be well with you.’ 24 (AT)But they did not obey or incline their ear, (AU)but walked in their own counsels and (AV)the stubbornness of their evil hearts, and (AW)went backward and not forward. 25 From the day that your fathers came out of the land of Egypt to this day, (AX)I have persistently sent all my servants the prophets to them, day after day. 26 (AY)Yet they did not listen to me or incline their ear, (AZ)but stiffened their neck. (BA)They did worse than their fathers.

27 (BB)“So you shall speak all these words to them, but they will not listen to you. (BC)You shall call to them, but they will not answer you. 28 And you shall say to them, ‘This is the nation that did not obey the voice of the Lord their God, and did not accept discipline; (BD)truth has perished; it is cut off from their lips.

29 (BE)“‘Cut off your hair and cast it away;
    raise a lamentation on (BF)the bare heights,
for the Lord has rejected and forsaken
    the generation of his wrath.’

The Valley of Slaughter

30 “For the sons of Judah have done evil in my sight, declares the Lord. They have set (BG)their detestable things in the house (BH)that is called by my name, to (BI)defile it. 31 And they have built the high places of (BJ)Topheth, which is in (BK)the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, (BL)to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire, (BM)which I did not command, nor did it come into my mind. 32 (BN)Therefore, behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when it will no more be called (BO)Topheth, or (BP)the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter; (BQ)for they will bury in Topheth, because there is no room elsewhere. 33 (BR)And the dead bodies of this people will be food for the birds of the air, and for the beasts of the earth, (BS)and none will frighten them away. 34 (BT)And I will silence in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, (BU)for the land shall become a waste.

“At that time, declares the Lord, the bones of the kings of Judah, the bones of its officials, the bones of the priests, the bones of the prophets, and the bones of the inhabitants of Jerusalem shall be brought out of their tombs. And they shall be spread (BV)before the sun and the moon and all the host of heaven, which they have loved and served, which they have gone after, and which they have sought and worshiped. (BW)And they shall not be gathered or buried. (BX)They shall be as dung on the surface of the ground. (BY)Death shall be preferred to life by all the remnant that remains of this evil family (BZ)in all the places where I have driven them, declares the Lord of hosts.

Sin and Treachery

“You shall say to them, Thus says the Lord:
(CA)When men fall, do they not rise again?
    If one turns away, does he not return?
Why then has this people (CB)turned away
    in perpetual (CC)backsliding?
(CD)They hold fast to deceit;
    they refuse to return.
(CE)I have paid attention and listened,
    but they have not spoken rightly;
no man relents of his evil,
    saying, ‘What have I done?’
Everyone turns to his own course,
    (CF)like a horse plunging headlong into battle.
Even the stork in the heavens
    knows her times,
and (CG)the turtledove, (CH)swallow, and crane[a]
    keep the time of their coming,
(CI)but my people know not
    the rules[b] of the Lord.

(CJ)“How can you say, ‘We are wise,
    and the law of the Lord is with us’?
But behold, the lying pen of the scribes
    has made it into a lie.
(CK)The wise men shall be put to shame;
    they shall be dismayed (CL)and taken;
behold, they have rejected the word of the Lord,
    so what wisdom is in them?
10 (CM)Therefore I will give their wives to others
    and their fields to conquerors,
because from the least to the greatest
    everyone (CN)is greedy for unjust gain;
from prophet to priest,
    everyone deals falsely.
11 They have healed (CO)the wound of my people lightly,
    saying, ‘Peace, peace,’
    when there is no peace.
12 Were they ashamed when they committed abomination?
    No, (CP)they were not at all ashamed;
    they did not know how to blush.
(CQ)Therefore they shall fall among the fallen;
    when I punish them, they shall be overthrown,
says the Lord.
13 When I would gather them, declares the Lord,
    there are (CR)no grapes on the vine,
    (CS)nor figs on the fig tree;
(CT)even the leaves are withered,
    and what I gave them has passed away from them.”[c]

14 Why do we sit still?
(CU)Gather together; (CV)let us go into the fortified cities
    and perish there,
for the Lord our God has doomed us to perish
    and has (CW)given us (CX)poisoned water to drink,
    because we have sinned against the Lord.
15 (CY)We looked for peace, but no good came;
    for a time of healing, but behold, terror.

16 (CZ)“The snorting of their horses is heard (DA)from Dan;
    at the sound of the neighing (DB)of their stallions
    (DC)the whole land quakes.
They come (DD)and devour the land and all that fills it,
    the city and those who dwell in it.
17 For behold, I am sending among you (DE)serpents,
    adders (DF)that cannot be charmed,
    (DG)and they shall bite you,”
declares the Lord.

Jeremiah Grieves for His People

18 My joy is gone; grief is upon me;[d]
    (DH)my heart is sick within me.
19 Behold, the cry of the daughter of my people
    from (DI)the length and breadth of the land:
“Is the Lord not in Zion?
    (DJ)Is her King not in her?”
(DK)“Why have they provoked me to anger with their carved images
    and with their foreign idols?”
20 “The harvest is past, the summer is ended,
    and we are not saved.”
21 For the wound of (DL)the daughter of my people is my heart wounded;
    (DM)I mourn, and dismay has taken hold on me.

22 Is there no (DN)balm in Gilead?
    Is there no physician there?
Why then has the health of the daughter of my people
    not been restored?
[e] (DO)Oh that my head were waters,
    and my eyes a fountain of tears,
that I might weep day and night
    for the slain of (DP)the daughter of my people!
[f] Oh that I had in the desert
    a travelers' lodging place,
that I might leave my people
    and go away from them!
For they are all (DQ)adulterers,
    a company of (DR)treacherous men.
(DS)They bend their tongue like a bow;
    falsehood and not truth has grown strong[g] in the land;
for they proceed from evil to evil,
    (DT)and they do not know me, declares the Lord.

(DU)Let everyone beware of his neighbor,
    and put no trust in any brother,
for every (DV)brother is a deceiver,
    and every neighbor (DW)goes about as a slanderer.
Everyone deceives his neighbor,
    and no one speaks the truth;
they have taught their tongue to speak lies;
    they weary themselves committing iniquity.
Heaping oppression upon oppression, and deceit upon deceit,
    (DX)they refuse to know me, declares the Lord.

Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts:
“Behold, (DY)I will refine them and (DZ)test them,
    for what else can I do, (EA)because of my people?
(EB)Their tongue is a deadly arrow;
    (EC)it speaks deceitfully;
with his mouth (ED)each speaks peace to his neighbor,
    but in his heart (EE)he plans an ambush for him.
(EF)Shall I not punish them for these things? declares the Lord,
    and shall I not avenge myself
    on a nation such as this?

10 “I will take up weeping and wailing for the mountains,
    and a lamentation for (EG)the pastures of the wilderness,
(EH)because they are laid waste so that no one passes through,
    and the lowing of cattle is not heard;
(EI)both the birds of the air and the beasts
    have fled and are gone.
11 (EJ)I will make Jerusalem a heap of ruins,
    (EK)a lair of jackals,
(EL)and I will make the cities of Judah a desolation,
    without inhabitant.”

12 (EM)Who is the man so wise that he can understand this? To whom has the mouth of the Lord spoken, that he may declare it? Why is the land ruined (EN)and laid waste like a wilderness, so that no one passes through? 13 And the Lord says: (EO)“Because they have forsaken my law that I set before them, and have not obeyed my voice or walked in accord with it, 14 but (EP)have stubbornly followed their own hearts and have gone after the Baals, as their fathers taught them. 15 Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: (EQ)Behold, I will feed this people with bitter food, and give them (ER)poisonous water to drink. 16 (ES)I will scatter them among the nations (ET)whom neither they nor their fathers have known, and I will (EU)send the sword after them, until I have consumed them.”

17 Thus says the Lord of hosts:
(EV)“Consider, and call for the mourning women to come;
    send for the skillful women to come;
18 let them make haste (EW)and raise a wailing over us,
    (EX)that our eyes may run down with tears
    and our eyelids flow with water.
19 For a sound of wailing is heard from Zion:
    (EY)‘How we are ruined!
    We are utterly shamed,
because we have left the land,
    because they have cast down our dwellings.’”

20 Hear, O women, the word of the Lord,
    and let your ear receive the word of his mouth;
teach to your daughters a lament,
    and each to her neighbor a dirge.
21 For death has come up into our windows;
    it has entered our palaces,
(EZ)cutting off the children from the streets
    and the young men from the squares.
22 Speak: “Thus declares the Lord,
(FA)‘The dead bodies of men shall fall
    like dung upon the open field,
(FB)like sheaves after the reaper,
    and none shall gather them.’”

23 Thus says the Lord: (FC)“Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, 24 but (FD)let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. (FE)For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.”

25 “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when (FF)I will punish all those who are circumcised merely in the flesh— 26 (FG)Egypt, Judah, Edom, the sons of Ammon, Moab, and (FH)all who dwell in the desert who cut the corners of their hair, for all these nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are (FI)uncircumcised in heart.”

Idols and the Living God

10 Hear the word that the Lord speaks to you, O house of Israel. Thus says the Lord:

“Learn not the way of the nations,
    nor be dismayed at the signs of the heavens
    because the nations are dismayed at them,
(FJ)for the customs of the peoples are vanity.[h]
(FK)A tree from the forest is cut down
    and worked with an axe by the hands of a craftsman.
(FL)They decorate it with silver and gold;
    (FM)they fasten it with hammer and nails
    so that it cannot move.
Their idols[i] are like scarecrows in a cucumber field,
    and (FN)they cannot speak;
(FO)they have to be carried,
    for they cannot walk.
Do not be afraid of them,
    (FP)for they cannot do evil,
    neither is it in them to do good.”

(FQ)There is none like you, O Lord;
    you are great, and your name is great in might.
(FR)Who would not fear you, O King of the nations?
    For this is your due;
for among all the wise ones of the nations
    and in all their kingdoms
    there is none like you.
(FS)They are both (FT)stupid and foolish;
    the instruction of idols is but wood!
(FU)Beaten silver is brought from (FV)Tarshish,
    and gold from (FW)Uphaz.
(FX)They are the work of the craftsman and of the hands of the goldsmith;
    their clothing is violet and purple;
    (FY)they are all the work of skilled men.
10 (FZ)But the Lord is the true God;
    (GA)he is the living God and the everlasting King.
At his wrath the earth quakes,
    and the nations cannot endure his indignation.

11 Thus shall you say to them: (GB)“The gods who did not make the heavens and the earth (GC)shall perish from the earth and from under the heavens.”[j]

12 (GD)It is he who (GE)made the earth by his power,
    (GF)who established the world by his wisdom,
    and (GG)by his understanding stretched out the heavens.
13 (GH)When he utters his voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens,
    (GI)and he makes the mist rise from the ends of the earth.
(GJ)He makes lightning (GK)for the rain,
    (GL)and he brings forth the wind (GM)from his storehouses.
14 (GN)Every man is stupid and without knowledge;
    (GO)every goldsmith is put to shame by his idols,
for his images are false,
    (GP)and there is no breath in them.
15 They are worthless, a work of delusion;
    at the time of their punishment they shall perish.
16 Not like these is he who is (GQ)the portion of Jacob,
    for he is the one who formed all things,
(GR)and Israel is the tribe of his inheritance;
    (GS)the Lord of hosts is his name.

17 (GT)Gather up your bundle from the ground,
    O you who dwell under siege!
18 For thus says the Lord:
(GU)“Behold, I am slinging out the inhabitants of the land
    at this time,
(GV)and I will bring distress on them,
    that they may feel it.”

19 Woe is me because of my hurt!
    (GW)My wound is grievous.
But I said, “Truly this is an affliction,
    and I must bear it.”
20 (GX)My tent is destroyed,
    and all my cords are broken;
my children have gone from me,
    (GY)and they are not;
there is no one to spread my tent again
    and (GZ)to set up my curtains.
21 (HA)For the shepherds (HB)are stupid
    and do not inquire of the Lord;
therefore they have not prospered,
    (HC)and all their flock is scattered.

22 A voice, a rumor! Behold, it comes!—
    (HD)a great commotion out of the north country
to make (HE)the cities of Judah a desolation,
    (HF)a lair of jackals.

23 (HG)I know, O Lord, that the way of man is not in himself,
    that it is not in man who walks to direct his steps.
24 (HH)Correct me, O Lord, but in justice;
    not in your anger, lest you bring me to nothing.

25 (HI)Pour out your wrath on the nations that know you not,
    and on the peoples that call not on your name,
(HJ)for they have devoured Jacob;
    they have devoured him and consumed him,
    and have laid waste his habitation.

The Broken Covenant

11 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: (HK)“Hear the words of this covenant, and speak to the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem. You shall say to them, Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: (HL)Cursed be the man who does not hear the words of this covenant that I commanded your fathers when I brought them out of the land of Egypt, (HM)from the iron furnace, saying, (HN)Listen to my voice, and do all that I command you. (HO)So shall you be my people, and I will be your God, (HP)that I may confirm the oath that I swore to your fathers, (HQ)to give them a land flowing with milk and honey, as at this day.” Then I answered, “So be it, Lord.”

And the Lord said to me, (HR)“Proclaim all these words in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem: (HS)Hear the words of this covenant and do them. For I solemnly warned your fathers when I brought them up out of the land of Egypt, (HT)warning them persistently, even to this day, saying, (HU)Obey my voice. (HV)Yet they did not obey or incline their ear, (HW)but everyone walked in the stubbornness of his evil heart. Therefore I brought upon them all (HX)the words of this covenant, which I commanded them to do, but they did not.”

Again the Lord said to me, (HY)“A conspiracy exists among the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 10 They have turned back to (HZ)the iniquities of their forefathers, who refused to hear my words. (IA)They have gone after other gods to serve them. (IB)The house of Israel and the house of Judah have broken my covenant that I made with their fathers. 11 Therefore, thus says the Lord, Behold, I am bringing disaster upon them that they cannot escape. (IC)Though they cry to me, I will not listen to them. 12 Then the cities of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem (ID)will go and cry to the gods to whom they make offerings, (IE)but they cannot save them in the time of their trouble. 13 (IF)For your gods have become as many as your cities, O Judah, and as many as the streets of Jerusalem are the altars you have set up to shame, (IG)altars to make offerings to Baal.

14 “Therefore (IH)do not pray for this people, or lift up a cry or prayer on their behalf, (II)for I will not listen when they call to me in the time of their trouble. 15 (IJ)What right has my beloved in my house, (IK)when she has done many vile deeds? Can even sacrificial flesh avert your doom? (IL)Can you then exult? 16 The Lord once called you (IM)‘a green olive tree, beautiful with good fruit.’ But (IN)with the roar of a great tempest he will set fire to it, and (IO)its branches will be consumed. 17 The Lord of hosts, (IP)who planted you, has decreed disaster against you, because of the evil that the house of Israel and the house of Judah have done, (IQ)provoking me to anger by making offerings to Baal.”

18 The Lord made it known to me and I knew;
    then you showed me their deeds.
19 But I was (IR)like a gentle lamb
    led to the slaughter.
I did not know (IS)it was against me
    they devised schemes, saying,
“Let us destroy the tree with its fruit,
    (IT)let us cut him off from (IU)the land of the living,
    that his name be remembered no more.”
20 But, O Lord of hosts, who judges righteously,
    who (IV)tests (IW)the heart and the mind,
(IX)let me see your vengeance upon them,
    for to you have I committed my cause.

21 Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the men of (IY)Anathoth, (IZ)who seek your life, and say, (JA)“Do not prophesy in the name of the Lord, or you will die by our hand”— 22 therefore thus says the Lord of hosts: “Behold, I will punish them. The young men shall die by the sword, their sons and their daughters shall die by famine, 23 and none of them shall be left. For I will bring disaster upon the men of (JB)Anathoth, (JC)the year of their punishment.”

Jeremiah's Complaint

12 (JD)Righteous are you, O Lord,
    when I complain to you;
    yet I would plead my case before you.
(JE)Why does the way of the wicked prosper?
    Why do all (JF)who are treacherous thrive?
You plant them, and they take root;
    they grow and produce fruit;
(JG)you are near in their mouth
    and far from their heart.
(JH)But you, O Lord, know me;
    (JI)you see me, and test my heart toward you.
(JJ)Pull them out like sheep for the slaughter,
    and set them apart for (JK)the day of slaughter.
(JL)How long will the land mourn
    and the grass of every field wither?
(JM)For the evil of those who dwell in it
    (JN)the beasts and the birds are swept away,
    because they said, “He will not see our latter end.”

The Lord Answers Jeremiah

“If you have raced with men on foot, and they have wearied you,
    how will you compete with horses?
And if in a safe land you are so trusting,
    what will you do in (JO)the thicket of the Jordan?
For (JP)even your brothers and the house of your father,
    (JQ)even they have dealt treacherously with you;
    they are in full cry after you;
(JR)do not believe them,
    though they speak friendly words to you.”

“I have forsaken my house;
    I have abandoned (JS)my heritage;
I have given (JT)the beloved of my soul
    into the hands of her enemies.
(JU)My heritage has become to me
    like a lion in the forest;
she has lifted up her voice against me;
    therefore I hate her.
Is (JV)my heritage to me like (JW)a hyena's lair?
    Are the (JX)birds of prey against her all around?
Go, (JY)assemble all the wild beasts;
    bring them to devour.
10 Many shepherds have destroyed my vineyard;
    (JZ)they have trampled down my portion;
they have made my pleasant portion
    a desolate wilderness.
11 They have made it a desolation;
    desolate, (KA)it mourns to me.
The whole land is made desolate,
    (KB)but no man lays it to heart.
12 Upon all the bare heights in the desert
    destroyers have come,
for the sword of the Lord devours
    from one end of the land to the other;
    no flesh has peace.
13 (KC)They have sown wheat and have reaped thorns;
    (KD)they have tired themselves out but profit nothing.
They shall be ashamed of their[k] harvests
    (KE)because of the fierce anger of the Lord.”

14 Thus says the Lord concerning all (KF)my evil neighbors (KG)who touch the heritage that (KH)I have given my people Israel to inherit: “Behold, I will pluck them up from their land, and I will pluck up the house of Judah from among them. 15 And after I have plucked them up, I will again have compassion on them, (KI)and I will bring them again each to his heritage and each to his land. 16 And it shall come to pass, if they will diligently learn the ways of my people, (KJ)to swear by my name, ‘As the Lord lives,’ even as they taught my people to swear by Baal, (KK)then they shall be built up in the midst of my people. 17 (KL)But if any nation will not listen, then I will utterly pluck it up and destroy it, declares the Lord.”

The Ruined Loincloth

13 Thus says the Lord to me, “Go and buy a linen loincloth and (KM)put it around your waist, and do not dip it in water.” So I bought a loincloth according to the word of the Lord, and put it around my waist. And the word of the Lord came to me a second time, “Take the loincloth that you have bought, which is around your waist, and arise, (KN)go to the Euphrates and hide it there in (KO)a cleft of the rock.” So I went and hid it by the Euphrates, as the Lord commanded me. And after many days the Lord said to me, “Arise, go to the Euphrates, and take from there (KP)the loincloth that I commanded you to hide there.” Then I went to the Euphrates, and dug, and I took (KQ)the loincloth from the place where I had hidden it. And behold, the loincloth was (KR)spoiled; it was (KS)good for nothing.

Then the word of the Lord came to me: “Thus says the Lord: (KT)Even so will I spoil the pride of Judah and the great (KU)pride of Jerusalem. 10 This evil people, who refuse to hear my words, (KV)who stubbornly follow their own heart and have gone after other gods to serve them and worship them, shall be like this loincloth, which is (KW)good for nothing. 11 For as the loincloth clings to the waist of a man, so I made the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah cling to me, declares the Lord, (KX)that they might be for me a people, (KY)a name, a praise, and a glory, but they would not listen.

The Jars Filled with Wine

12 “You shall speak to them this word: ‘Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, “Every jar shall be filled with wine.”’ And they will say to you, ‘Do we not indeed know that (KZ)every jar will be filled with wine?’ 13 Then you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord: (LA)Behold, I will fill with drunkenness all the inhabitants of this land: (LB)the kings who sit on David's throne, (LC)the priests, the prophets, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 14 And I will (LD)dash them one against another, fathers and sons together, declares the Lord. I will not pity or spare or have compassion, that I should not destroy them.’”

Exile Threatened

15 Hear and give ear; be not proud,
    for the Lord has spoken.
16 (LE)Give glory to the Lord your God
    (LF)before he brings darkness,
before your feet stumble
    on the twilight mountains,
and (LG)while you look for light
    he turns it into gloom
    and makes it (LH)deep darkness.
17 But if you will not listen,
    (LI)my soul will weep in secret for your pride;
my eyes will weep bitterly and run down with tears,
    because the Lord's flock has been taken captive.

18 Say to (LJ)the king and (LK)the queen mother:
    “Take a lowly seat,
for (LL)your beautiful crown
    has come down from your head.”
19 (LM)The cities of the Negeb are shut up,
    with none to open them;
all Judah is taken into exile,
    wholly taken into exile.

20 “Lift up your eyes (LN)and see
    those who come from the north.
Where is the flock that was given you,
    your beautiful flock?
21 What will you say when they set as head over you
    those whom you yourself have taught to be friends to you?
(LO)Will not pangs take hold of you
    like those of a woman in labor?
22 And if you say in your heart,
    (LP)‘Why have these things come upon me?’
it is for the greatness of your iniquity
    that (LQ)your skirts are lifted up
    and you suffer violence.
23 (LR)Can the Ethiopian change his skin
    or (LS)the leopard his spots?
Then also you can do good
    who are accustomed to do evil.
24 I will scatter you[l] (LT)like chaff
    driven by the wind from the desert.
25 (LU)This is your lot,
    the portion I have measured out to you, declares the Lord,
because (LV)you have forgotten me
    and trusted in lies.
26 (LW)I myself will lift up your skirts over your face,
    and your shame will be seen.
27 I have seen (LX)your abominations,
    your adulteries and (LY)neighings, your lewd whorings,
    (LZ)on the hills in the field.
Woe to you, O Jerusalem!
    How long will it be (MA)before you are made clean?”

Famine, Sword, and Pestilence

14 The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah concerning (MB)the drought:

(MC)“Judah mourns,
    and (MD)her gates languish;
her people lament on the ground,
    and (ME)the cry of Jerusalem goes up.
Her nobles send their servants for water;
    they come to the cisterns;
they find no water;
    they return with their vessels empty;
they are (MF)ashamed and confounded
    and (MG)cover their heads.
Because of the ground that is dismayed,
    since there is (MH)no rain on the land,
the farmers are ashamed;
    they cover their heads.
Even (MI)the doe in the field forsakes her newborn fawn
    because there is no grass.
(MJ)The wild donkeys stand on the bare heights;
    they pant for air like jackals;
their eyes fail
    because there is no vegetation.

“Though our iniquities testify against us,
    act, O Lord, (MK)for your name's sake;
(ML)for our backslidings are many;
    (MM)we have sinned against you.
(MN)O you hope of Israel,
    its savior in time of trouble,
why should you be like a stranger in the land,
    like a traveler who turns aside to tarry for a night?
Why should you be like a man confused,
    (MO)like a mighty warrior who cannot save?
Yet (MP)you, O Lord, are in the midst of us,
    and (MQ)we are called by your name;
    (MR)do not leave us.”

10 Thus says the Lord concerning this people:
“They have loved to wander thus;
    they have not restrained their feet;
(MS)therefore the Lord does not accept them;
    (MT)now he will remember their iniquity
    and punish their sins.”

11 The Lord said to me: (MU)“Do not pray for the welfare of this people. 12 Though they fast, I will not hear their cry, (MV)and though they offer burnt offering and grain offering, I will not accept them. But I will consume them (MW)by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence.”

Lying Prophets

13 Then I said: “Ah, Lord God, behold, the prophets (MX)say to them, ‘You shall not see the sword, nor shall you have famine, but I will give you assured peace in this place.’” 14 And the Lord said to me: “The (MY)prophets are prophesying lies in my name. (MZ)I did not send them, nor did I command them or speak to them. They are prophesying to you a lying vision, (NA)worthless divination, and (NB)the deceit of their own minds. 15 Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the prophets who prophesy in my name although (NC)I did not send them, and who say, (ND)‘Sword and famine shall not come upon this land’: (NE)By sword and famine those prophets shall be consumed. 16 And the people to whom they prophesy shall be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem, victims of famine and sword, (NF)with none to bury them—them, their wives, their sons, and their daughters. For I will pour out their evil upon them.

17 “You shall say to them this word:
(NG)‘Let my eyes run down with tears night and day,
    and let them not cease,
for the virgin (NH)daughter of my people is shattered with a great wound,
    (NI)with a very grievous blow.
18 (NJ)If I go out into the field,
    behold, those pierced by the sword!
(NK)And if I enter the city,
    behold, the diseases of famine!
(NL)For both prophet and priest ply their trade through the land
    and have no knowledge.’”

19 (NM)Have you utterly rejected Judah?
    Does your soul loathe Zion?
Why have you struck us down
    (NN)so that there is no healing for us?
(NO)We looked for peace, but no good came;
    (NP)for a time of healing, but behold, terror.
20 (NQ)We acknowledge our wickedness, O Lord,
    and the iniquity of our fathers,
    (NR)for we have sinned against you.
21 Do not spurn us, (NS)for your name's sake;
    do not dishonor your glorious throne;
    (NT)remember and do not break your covenant with us.
22 Are there any among (NU)the false gods of the nations (NV)that can bring rain?
    Or can the heavens give showers?
Are you not he, O Lord our God?
    We set our hope on you,
    (NW)for you do all these things.

The Lord Will Not Relent

15 Then the Lord said to me, (NX)“Though (NY)Moses (NZ)and Samuel (OA)stood before me, yet my heart would not turn toward this people. Send them out of my sight, and let them go! And when they ask you, ‘Where shall we go?’ you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord:

(OB)“‘Those who are for pestilence, to pestilence,
    and those who are for the sword, to the sword;
those who are for famine, to famine,
    and those who are for captivity, to captivity.’

(OC)I will appoint over them four kinds of destroyers, declares the Lord: the sword to kill, the dogs to tear, and (OD)the birds of the air (OE)and the beasts of the earth to devour and destroy. (OF)And I will make them a horror to all the kingdoms of the earth because of what (OG)Manasseh the son of Hezekiah, king of Judah, did in Jerusalem.

(OH)“Who will have pity on you, O Jerusalem,
    (OI)or who will grieve for you?
Who will turn aside
    to ask about your welfare?
(OJ)You have rejected me, declares the Lord;
    (OK)you keep going backward,
so I have stretched out my hand against you and destroyed you—
    (OL)I am weary of relenting.
(OM)I have winnowed them with (ON)a winnowing fork
    in the gates of the land;
I have bereaved them; I have destroyed my people;
    (OO)they did not turn from their ways.
I have made their widows more in number
    than (OP)the sand of the seas;
I have brought against the mothers of young men
    a destroyer at noonday;
I have made anguish and terror
    fall upon them suddenly.
(OQ)She who bore seven has grown feeble;
    (OR)she has fainted away;
(OS)her sun went down while it was yet day;
    she has been shamed and disgraced.
And the rest of them I will give to the sword
    before their enemies,
declares the Lord.”

Jeremiah's Complaint

10 (OT)Woe is me, my mother, that you bore me, a man of strife and contention to the whole land! (OU)I have not lent, nor have I borrowed, yet all of them curse me. 11 The Lord said, “Have I not[m] set you free for their good? Have I not pleaded for you before the enemy in the time of trouble and in the time of distress? 12 Can one break iron, iron (OV)from the north, and bronze?

13 (OW)“Your wealth and your treasures I will give as (OX)spoil, without price, for all your sins, throughout all your territory. 14 I will make you serve your enemies (OY)in a land that you do not know, (OZ)for in my anger a fire is kindled that shall burn forever.”

15 (PA)O Lord, you know;
    (PB)remember me and visit me,
    (PC)(PD)and take vengeance for me on my persecutors.
In your forbearance take me not away;
    (PE)know that (PF)for your sake I bear reproach.
16 Your words were found, (PG)and I ate them,
    and (PH)your words became to me a joy
    and the delight of my heart,
(PI)for I am called by your name,
    O Lord, God of hosts.
17 (PJ)I did not sit in the company of revelers,
    nor did I rejoice;
(PK)I sat alone, because your hand was upon me,
    for you had filled me with indignation.
18 Why is my pain unceasing,
    (PL)my wound incurable,
    refusing to be healed?
Will you be to me (PM)like a deceitful brook,
    like waters that fail?

19 Therefore thus says the Lord:
(PN)“If you return, I will restore you,
    and you shall (PO)stand before me.
If you utter what is precious, and not what is worthless,
    you shall be as my mouth.
They shall turn to you,
    but you shall not turn to them.
20 (PP)And I will make you to this people
    a fortified wall of bronze;
they will fight against you,
    (PQ)but they shall not prevail over you,
(PR)for I am with you
    to save you and deliver you,
declares the Lord.
21 (PS)I will deliver you out of the hand of the wicked,
    and redeem you from the grasp of (PT)the ruthless.”

False Religion Worthless

This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: “Stand(A) at the gate of the Lord’s house and there proclaim this message:

“‘Hear the word of the Lord, all you people of Judah who come through these gates to worship the Lord. This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Reform your ways(B) and your actions, and I will let you live(C) in this place. Do not trust(D) in deceptive(E) words and say, “This is the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord!” If you really change(F) your ways and your actions and deal with each other justly,(G) if you do not oppress(H) the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow and do not shed innocent blood(I) in this place, and if you do not follow other gods(J) to your own harm, then I will let you live in this place, in the land(K) I gave your ancestors(L) for ever and ever. But look, you are trusting(M) in deceptive(N) words that are worthless.

“‘Will you steal(O) and murder,(P) commit adultery(Q) and perjury,[a](R) burn incense to Baal(S) and follow other gods(T) you have not known, 10 and then come and stand(U) before me in this house,(V) which bears my Name, and say, “We are safe”—safe to do all these detestable things?(W) 11 Has this house,(X) which bears my Name, become a den of robbers(Y) to you? But I have been watching!(Z) declares the Lord.

12 “‘Go now to the place in Shiloh(AA) where I first made a dwelling(AB) for my Name,(AC) and see what I did(AD) to it because of the wickedness of my people Israel. 13 While you were doing all these things, declares the Lord, I spoke(AE) to you again and again,(AF) but you did not listen;(AG) I called(AH) you, but you did not answer.(AI) 14 Therefore, what I did to Shiloh(AJ) I will now do to the house that bears my Name,(AK) the temple(AL) you trust in, the place I gave to you and your ancestors. 15 I will thrust you from my presence,(AM) just as I did all your fellow Israelites, the people of Ephraim.’(AN)

16 “So do not pray for this people nor offer any plea(AO) or petition for them; do not plead with me, for I will not listen(AP) to you. 17 Do you not see what they are doing in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? 18 The children gather wood, the fathers light the fire, and the women knead the dough and make cakes to offer to the Queen of Heaven.(AQ) They pour out drink offerings(AR) to other gods to arouse(AS) my anger. 19 But am I the one they are provoking?(AT) declares the Lord. Are they not rather harming themselves, to their own shame?(AU)

20 “‘Therefore this is what the Sovereign(AV) Lord says: My anger(AW) and my wrath will be poured(AX) out on this place—on man and beast, on the trees of the field and on the crops of your land—and it will burn and not be quenched.(AY)

21 “‘This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Go ahead, add your burnt offerings to your other sacrifices(AZ) and eat(BA) the meat yourselves! 22 For when I brought your ancestors out of Egypt and spoke to them, I did not just give them commands(BB) about burnt offerings and sacrifices,(BC) 23 but I gave them this command:(BD) Obey(BE) me, and I will be your God and you will be my people.(BF) Walk in obedience to all(BG) I command you, that it may go well(BH) with you. 24 But they did not listen(BI) or pay attention;(BJ) instead, they followed the stubborn inclinations of their evil hearts.(BK) They went backward(BL) and not forward. 25 From the time your ancestors left Egypt until now, day after day, again and again(BM) I sent you my servants(BN) the prophets.(BO) 26 But they did not listen to me or pay attention.(BP) They were stiff-necked(BQ) and did more evil than their ancestors.’(BR)

27 “When you tell(BS) them all this, they will not listen(BT) to you; when you call to them, they will not answer.(BU) 28 Therefore say to them, ‘This is the nation that has not obeyed the Lord its God or responded to correction.(BV) Truth(BW) has perished; it has vanished from their lips.

29 “‘Cut off(BX) your hair and throw it away; take up a lament(BY) on the barren heights, for the Lord has rejected and abandoned(BZ) this generation that is under his wrath.

The Valley of Slaughter

30 “‘The people of Judah have done evil(CA) in my eyes, declares the Lord. They have set up their detestable idols(CB) in the house that bears my Name and have defiled(CC) it. 31 They have built the high places of Topheth(CD) in the Valley of Ben Hinnom(CE) to burn their sons and daughters(CF) in the fire—something I did not command, nor did it enter my mind.(CG) 32 So beware, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when people will no longer call it Topheth or the Valley of Ben Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter,(CH) for they will bury(CI) the dead in Topheth until there is no more room. 33 Then the carcasses(CJ) of this people will become food(CK) for the birds and the wild animals, and there will be no one to frighten them away.(CL) 34 I will bring an end to the sounds(CM) of joy and gladness and to the voices of bride and bridegroom(CN) in the towns of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem,(CO) for the land will become desolate.(CP)

“‘At that time, declares the Lord, the bones of the kings and officials of Judah, the bones of the priests and prophets, and the bones(CQ) of the people of Jerusalem will be removed(CR) from their graves. They will be exposed to the sun and the moon and all the stars of the heavens, which they have loved and served(CS) and which they have followed and consulted and worshiped.(CT) They will not be gathered up or buried,(CU) but will be like dung lying on the ground.(CV) Wherever I banish them,(CW) all the survivors of this evil nation will prefer death to life,(CX) declares the Lord Almighty.’

Sin and Punishment

“Say to them, ‘This is what the Lord says:

“‘When people fall down, do they not get up?(CY)
    When someone turns away,(CZ) do they not return?
Why then have these people turned away?
    Why does Jerusalem always turn away?
They cling to deceit;(DA)
    they refuse to return.(DB)
I have listened(DC) attentively,
    but they do not say what is right.
None of them repent(DD) of their wickedness,
    saying, “What have I done?”
Each pursues their own course(DE)
    like a horse charging into battle.
Even the stork in the sky
    knows her appointed seasons,
and the dove, the swift and the thrush
    observe the time of their migration.
But my people do not know(DF)
    the requirements of the Lord.

“‘How can you say, “We are wise,
    for we have the law(DG) of the Lord,”
when actually the lying pen of the scribes
    has handled it falsely?
The wise(DH) will be put to shame;
    they will be dismayed(DI) and trapped.(DJ)
Since they have rejected the word(DK) of the Lord,
    what kind of wisdom(DL) do they have?
10 Therefore I will give their wives to other men
    and their fields to new owners.(DM)
From the least to the greatest,
    all are greedy for gain;(DN)
prophets(DO) and priests alike,
    all practice deceit.(DP)
11 They dress the wound of my people
    as though it were not serious.
“Peace, peace,” they say,
    when there is no peace.(DQ)
12 Are they ashamed of their detestable conduct?
    No, they have no shame(DR) at all;
    they do not even know how to blush.
So they will fall among the fallen;
    they will be brought down when they are punished,(DS)
says the Lord.(DT)

13 “‘I will take away their harvest,
declares the Lord.
    There will be no grapes on the vine.(DU)
There will be no figs(DV) on the tree,
    and their leaves will wither.(DW)
What I have given them
    will be taken(DX) from them.[b]’”

14 Why are we sitting here?
    Gather together!
Let us flee to the fortified cities(DY)
    and perish there!
For the Lord our God has doomed us to perish
    and given us poisoned water(DZ) to drink,
    because we have sinned(EA) against him.
15 We hoped for peace(EB)
    but no good has come,
for a time of healing
    but there is only terror.(EC)
16 The snorting of the enemy’s horses(ED)
    is heard from Dan;(EE)
at the neighing of their stallions
    the whole land trembles.(EF)
They have come to devour(EG)
    the land and everything in it,
    the city and all who live there.

17 “See, I will send venomous snakes(EH) among you,
    vipers that cannot be charmed,(EI)
    and they will bite you,”
declares the Lord.

18 You who are my Comforter[c] in sorrow,
    my heart is faint(EJ) within me.
19 Listen to the cry of my people
    from a land far away:(EK)
“Is the Lord not in Zion?
    Is her King(EL) no longer there?”

“Why have they aroused(EM) my anger with their images,
    with their worthless(EN) foreign idols?”(EO)

20 “The harvest is past,
    the summer has ended,
    and we are not saved.”

21 Since my people are crushed,(EP) I am crushed;
    I mourn,(EQ) and horror grips me.
22 Is there no balm in Gilead?(ER)
    Is there no physician(ES) there?
Why then is there no healing(ET)
    for the wound of my people?

[d]Oh, that my head were a spring of water
    and my eyes a fountain of tears!(EU)
I would weep(EV) day and night
    for the slain of my people.(EW)
Oh, that I had in the desert(EX)
    a lodging place for travelers,
so that I might leave my people
    and go away from them;
for they are all adulterers,(EY)
    a crowd of unfaithful(EZ) people.

“They make ready their tongue
    like a bow, to shoot lies;(FA)
it is not by truth
    that they triumph[e] in the land.
They go from one sin to another;
    they do not acknowledge(FB) me,”
declares the Lord.
“Beware of your friends;(FC)
    do not trust anyone in your clan.(FD)
For every one of them is a deceiver,[f](FE)
    and every friend a slanderer.(FF)
Friend deceives friend,(FG)
    and no one speaks the truth.(FH)
They have taught their tongues to lie;(FI)
    they weary themselves with sinning.
You[g] live in the midst of deception;(FJ)
    in their deceit they refuse to acknowledge me,”
declares the Lord.

Therefore this is what the Lord Almighty says:

“See, I will refine(FK) and test(FL) them,
    for what else can I do
    because of the sin of my people?
Their tongue(FM) is a deadly arrow;
    it speaks deceitfully.
With their mouths they all speak cordially to their neighbors,(FN)
    but in their hearts they set traps(FO) for them.(FP)
Should I not punish them for this?”
    declares the Lord.
“Should I not avenge(FQ) myself
    on such a nation as this?”

10 I will weep and wail for the mountains
    and take up a lament concerning the wilderness grasslands.(FR)
They are desolate and untraveled,
    and the lowing of cattle is not heard.
The birds(FS) have all fled
    and the animals are gone.

11 “I will make Jerusalem a heap(FT) of ruins,
    a haunt of jackals;(FU)
and I will lay waste the towns of Judah(FV)
    so no one can live there.”(FW)

12 Who is wise(FX) enough to understand this? Who has been instructed by the Lord and can explain it? Why has the land been ruined and laid waste like a desert that no one can cross?

13 The Lord said, “It is because they have forsaken my law, which I set before them; they have not obeyed me or followed my law.(FY) 14 Instead, they have followed(FZ) the stubbornness of their hearts;(GA) they have followed the Baals, as their ancestors taught them.” 15 Therefore this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: “See, I will make this people eat bitter food(GB) and drink poisoned water.(GC) 16 I will scatter them among nations(GD) that neither they nor their ancestors have known,(GE) and I will pursue them with the sword(GF) until I have made an end of them.”(GG)

17 This is what the Lord Almighty says:

“Consider now! Call for the wailing women(GH) to come;
    send for the most skillful of them.
18 Let them come quickly
    and wail over us
till our eyes overflow with tears
    and water streams from our eyelids.(GI)
19 The sound of wailing is heard from Zion:
    ‘How ruined(GJ) we are!
    How great is our shame!
We must leave our land
    because our houses are in ruins.’”

20 Now, you women, hear the word of the Lord;
    open your ears to the words of his mouth.(GK)
Teach your daughters how to wail;
    teach one another a lament.(GL)
21 Death has climbed in through our windows(GM)
    and has entered our fortresses;
it has removed the children from the streets
    and the young men(GN) from the public squares.

22 Say, “This is what the Lord declares:

“‘Dead bodies will lie
    like dung(GO) on the open field,
like cut grain behind the reaper,
    with no one to gather them.’”

23 This is what the Lord says:

“Let not the wise boast of their wisdom(GP)
    or the strong boast of their strength(GQ)
    or the rich boast of their riches,(GR)
24 but let the one who boasts boast(GS) about this:
    that they have the understanding to know(GT) me,
that I am the Lord,(GU) who exercises kindness,(GV)
    justice and righteousness(GW) on earth,
    for in these I delight,”
declares the Lord.

25 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will punish all who are circumcised only in the flesh(GX) 26 Egypt, Judah, Edom, Ammon, Moab and all who live in the wilderness in distant places.[h](GY) For all these nations are really uncircumcised,(GZ) and even the whole house of Israel is uncircumcised in heart.(HA)

God and Idols(HB)

10 Hear what the Lord says to you, people of Israel. This is what the Lord says:

“Do not learn the ways of the nations(HC)
    or be terrified by signs(HD) in the heavens,
    though the nations are terrified by them.
For the practices of the peoples are worthless;
    they cut a tree out of the forest,
    and a craftsman(HE) shapes it with his chisel.(HF)
They adorn it with silver(HG) and gold;
    they fasten it with hammer and nails
    so it will not totter.(HH)
Like a scarecrow in a cucumber field,
    their idols cannot speak;(HI)
they must be carried
    because they cannot walk.(HJ)
Do not fear them;
    they can do no harm(HK)
    nor can they do any good.”(HL)

No one is like you,(HM) Lord;
    you are great,(HN)
    and your name is mighty in power.
Who should not fear(HO) you,
    King of the nations?(HP)
    This is your due.
Among all the wise leaders of the nations
    and in all their kingdoms,
    there is no one like you.

They are all senseless(HQ) and foolish;(HR)
    they are taught by worthless wooden idols.(HS)
Hammered silver is brought from Tarshish(HT)
    and gold from Uphaz.
What the craftsman and goldsmith have made(HU)
    is then dressed in blue and purple—
    all made by skilled workers.
10 But the Lord is the true God;
    he is the living God,(HV) the eternal King.(HW)
When he is angry,(HX) the earth trembles;(HY)
    the nations cannot endure his wrath.(HZ)

11 “Tell them this: ‘These gods, who did not make the heavens and the earth, will perish(IA) from the earth and from under the heavens.’”[i]

12 But God made(IB) the earth(IC) by his power;
    he founded the world by his wisdom(ID)
    and stretched out the heavens(IE) by his understanding.
13 When he thunders,(IF) the waters in the heavens roar;
    he makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth.
He sends lightning(IG) with the rain(IH)
    and brings out the wind from his storehouses.(II)

14 Everyone is senseless and without knowledge;
    every goldsmith is shamed(IJ) by his idols.
The images he makes are a fraud;(IK)
    they have no breath in them.
15 They are worthless,(IL) the objects of mockery;
    when their judgment comes, they will perish.
16 He who is the Portion(IM) of Jacob is not like these,
    for he is the Maker of all things,(IN)
including Israel, the people of his inheritance(IO)
    the Lord Almighty is his name.(IP)

Coming Destruction

17 Gather up your belongings(IQ) to leave the land,
    you who live under siege.
18 For this is what the Lord says:
    “At this time I will hurl(IR) out
    those who live in this land;
I will bring distress(IS) on them
    so that they may be captured.”

19 Woe to me because of my injury!
    My wound(IT) is incurable!
Yet I said to myself,
    “This is my sickness, and I must endure(IU) it.”
20 My tent(IV) is destroyed;
    all its ropes are snapped.
My children are gone from me and are no more;(IW)
    no one is left now to pitch my tent
    or to set up my shelter.
21 The shepherds(IX) are senseless(IY)
    and do not inquire of the Lord;(IZ)
so they do not prosper(JA)
    and all their flock is scattered.(JB)
22 Listen! The report is coming—
    a great commotion from the land of the north!(JC)
It will make the towns of Judah desolate,(JD)
    a haunt of jackals.(JE)

Jeremiah’s Prayer

23 Lord, I know that people’s lives are not their own;
    it is not for them to direct their steps.(JF)
24 Discipline me, Lord, but only in due measure—
    not in your anger,(JG)
    or you will reduce me to nothing.(JH)
25 Pour out your wrath on the nations(JI)
    that do not acknowledge you,
    on the peoples who do not call on your name.(JJ)
For they have devoured(JK) Jacob;
    they have devoured him completely
    and destroyed his homeland.(JL)

The Covenant Is Broken

11 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: “Listen to the terms of this covenant(JM) and tell them to the people of Judah and to those who live in Jerusalem. Tell them that this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Cursed(JN) is the one who does not obey the terms of this covenant— the terms I commanded your ancestors when I brought them out of Egypt,(JO) out of the iron-smelting furnace.(JP)’ I said, ‘Obey(JQ) me and do everything I command you, and you will be my people,(JR) and I will be your God. Then I will fulfill the oath I swore(JS) to your ancestors, to give them a land flowing with milk and honey’(JT)—the land you possess today.”

I answered, “Amen,(JU) Lord.”

The Lord said to me, “Proclaim(JV) all these words in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem: ‘Listen to the terms of this covenant and follow(JW) them. From the time I brought your ancestors up from Egypt until today, I warned them again and again,(JX) saying, “Obey me.” But they did not listen or pay attention;(JY) instead, they followed the stubbornness of their evil hearts.(JZ) So I brought on them all the curses(KA) of the covenant I had commanded them to follow but that they did not keep.(KB)’”

Then the Lord said to me, “There is a conspiracy(KC) among the people of Judah and those who live in Jerusalem. 10 They have returned to the sins of their ancestors,(KD) who refused to listen to my words.(KE) They have followed other gods(KF) to serve them.(KG) Both Israel and Judah have broken the covenant(KH) I made with their ancestors. 11 Therefore this is what the Lord says: ‘I will bring on them a disaster(KI) they cannot escape.(KJ) Although they cry(KK) out to me, I will not listen(KL) to them. 12 The towns of Judah and the people of Jerusalem will go and cry out to the gods to whom they burn incense,(KM) but they will not help them at all when disaster(KN) strikes. 13 You, Judah, have as many gods(KO) as you have towns;(KP) and the altars you have set up to burn incense(KQ) to that shameful(KR) god Baal are as many as the streets of Jerusalem.’

14 “Do not pray(KS) for this people or offer any plea or petition for them, because I will not listen(KT) when they call to me in the time of their distress.

15 “What is my beloved doing in my temple
    as she, with many others, works out her evil schemes?
    Can consecrated meat(KU) avert your punishment?(KV)
When you engage in your wickedness,
    then you rejoice.[j]

16 The Lord called you a thriving olive tree(KW)
    with fruit beautiful in form.
But with the roar of a mighty storm
    he will set it on fire,(KX)
    and its branches will be broken.(KY)

17 The Lord Almighty, who planted(KZ) you, has decreed disaster(LA) for you, because the people of both Israel and Judah have done evil and aroused(LB) my anger by burning incense to Baal.(LC)

Plot Against Jeremiah

18 Because the Lord revealed their plot to me, I knew it, for at that time he showed me what they were doing. 19 I had been like a gentle lamb led to the slaughter;(LD) I did not realize that they had plotted(LE) against me, saying,

“Let us destroy the tree and its fruit;
    let us cut him off from the land of the living,(LF)
    that his name be remembered(LG) no more.”
20 But you, Lord Almighty, who judge righteously(LH)
    and test the heart(LI) and mind,(LJ)
let me see your vengeance(LK) on them,
    for to you I have committed my cause.

21 Therefore this is what the Lord says about the people of Anathoth(LL) who are threatening to kill you,(LM) saying, “Do not prophesy(LN) in the name of the Lord or you will die(LO) by our hands”— 22 therefore this is what the Lord Almighty says: “I will punish them. Their young men(LP) will die by the sword, their sons and daughters by famine. 23 Not even a remnant(LQ) will be left to them, because I will bring disaster on the people of Anathoth in the year of their punishment.(LR)

Jeremiah’s Complaint

12 You are always righteous,(LS) Lord,
    when I bring a case(LT) before you.
Yet I would speak with you about your justice:(LU)
    Why does the way of the wicked prosper?(LV)
    Why do all the faithless live at ease?
You have planted(LW) them, and they have taken root;
    they grow and bear fruit.(LX)
You are always on their lips
    but far from their hearts.(LY)
Yet you know me, Lord;
    you see me and test(LZ) my thoughts about you.
Drag them off like sheep(MA) to be butchered!
    Set them apart for the day of slaughter!(MB)
How long will the land lie parched(MC)
    and the grass in every field be withered?(MD)
Because those who live in it are wicked,
    the animals and birds have perished.(ME)
Moreover, the people are saying,
    “He will not see what happens to us.”

God’s Answer

“If you have raced with men on foot
    and they have worn you out,
    how can you compete with horses?
If you stumble[k] in safe country,
    how will you manage in the thickets(MF) by[l] the Jordan?
Your relatives, members of your own family—
    even they have betrayed you;
    they have raised a loud cry against you.(MG)
Do not trust them,
    though they speak well of you.(MH)

“I will forsake(MI) my house,
    abandon(MJ) my inheritance;
I will give the one I love(MK)
    into the hands of her enemies.(ML)
My inheritance has become to me
    like a lion(MM) in the forest.
She roars at me;
    therefore I hate her.(MN)
Has not my inheritance become to me
    like a speckled bird of prey
    that other birds of prey surround and attack?
Go and gather all the wild beasts;
    bring them to devour.(MO)
10 Many shepherds(MP) will ruin my vineyard
    and trample down my field;
they will turn my pleasant field
    into a desolate wasteland.(MQ)
11 It will be made a wasteland,(MR)
    parched and desolate before me;(MS)
the whole land will be laid waste
    because there is no one who cares.
12 Over all the barren heights in the desert
    destroyers will swarm,
for the sword(MT) of the Lord(MU) will devour(MV)
    from one end of the land to the other;(MW)
    no one will be safe.(MX)
13 They will sow wheat but reap thorns;
    they will wear themselves out but gain nothing.(MY)
They will bear the shame of their harvest
    because of the Lord’s fierce anger.”(MZ)

14 This is what the Lord says: “As for all my wicked neighbors who seize the inheritance(NA) I gave my people Israel, I will uproot(NB) them from their lands and I will uproot(NC) the people of Judah from among them. 15 But after I uproot them, I will again have compassion(ND) and will bring(NE) each of them back to their own inheritance and their own country. 16 And if they learn(NF) well the ways of my people and swear by my name, saying, ‘As surely as the Lord lives’(NG)—even as they once taught my people to swear by Baal(NH)—then they will be established among my people.(NI) 17 But if any nation does not listen, I will completely uproot and destroy(NJ) it,” declares the Lord.

A Linen Belt

13 This is what the Lord said to me: “Go and buy a linen belt and put it around your waist, but do not let it touch water.” So I bought a belt, as the Lord directed, and put it around my waist.

Then the word of the Lord came to me a second time:(NK) “Take the belt you bought and are wearing around your waist, and go now to Perath[m](NL) and hide it there in a crevice in the rocks.” So I went and hid it at Perath, as the Lord told me.(NM)

Many days later the Lord said to me, “Go now to Perath and get the belt I told you to hide there.” So I went to Perath and dug up the belt and took it from the place where I had hidden it, but now it was ruined and completely useless.

Then the word of the Lord came to me: “This is what the Lord says: ‘In the same way I will ruin the pride of Judah and the great pride(NN) of Jerusalem. 10 These wicked people, who refuse to listen(NO) to my words, who follow the stubbornness of their hearts(NP) and go after other gods(NQ) to serve and worship them,(NR) will be like this belt—completely useless!(NS) 11 For as a belt is bound around the waist, so I bound all the people of Israel and all the people of Judah to me,’ declares the Lord, ‘to be my people for my renown(NT) and praise and honor.(NU) But they have not listened.’(NV)

Wineskins

12 “Say to them: ‘This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Every wineskin should be filled with wine.’ And if they say to you, ‘Don’t we know that every wineskin should be filled with wine?’ 13 then tell them, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am going to fill with drunkenness(NW) all who live in this land, including the kings who sit on David’s throne, the priests, the prophets and all those living in Jerusalem. 14 I will smash them one against the other, parents and children alike, declares the Lord. I will allow no pity(NX) or mercy or compassion(NY) to keep me from destroying(NZ) them.’”

Threat of Captivity

15 Hear and pay attention,
    do not be arrogant,
    for the Lord has spoken.(OA)
16 Give glory(OB) to the Lord your God
    before he brings the darkness,
before your feet stumble(OC)
    on the darkening hills.
You hope for light,
    but he will turn it to utter darkness
    and change it to deep gloom.(OD)
17 If you do not listen,(OE)
    I will weep in secret
    because of your pride;
my eyes will weep bitterly,
    overflowing with tears,(OF)
    because the Lord’s flock(OG) will be taken captive.(OH)

18 Say to the king(OI) and to the queen mother,(OJ)
    “Come down from your thrones,
for your glorious crowns(OK)
    will fall from your heads.”
19 The cities in the Negev will be shut up,
    and there will be no one to open them.
All Judah(OL) will be carried into exile,
    carried completely away.

20 Look up and see
    those who are coming from the north.(OM)
Where is the flock(ON) that was entrusted to you,
    the sheep of which you boasted?
21 What will you say when the Lord sets over you
    those you cultivated as your special allies?(OO)
Will not pain grip you
    like that of a woman in labor?(OP)
22 And if you ask yourself,
    “Why has this happened to me?”(OQ)
it is because of your many sins(OR)
    that your skirts have been torn off(OS)
    and your body mistreated.(OT)
23 Can an Ethiopian[n] change his skin
    or a leopard its spots?
Neither can you do good
    who are accustomed to doing evil.(OU)

24 “I will scatter you like chaff(OV)
    driven by the desert wind.(OW)
25 This is your lot,
    the portion(OX) I have decreed for you,”
declares the Lord,
“because you have forgotten(OY) me
    and trusted in false gods.(OZ)
26 I will pull up your skirts over your face
    that your shame may be seen(PA)
27 your adulteries and lustful neighings,
    your shameless prostitution!(PB)
I have seen your detestable acts
    on the hills and in the fields.(PC)
Woe to you, Jerusalem!
    How long will you be unclean?”(PD)

Drought, Famine, Sword

14 This is the word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah concerning the drought:(PE)

“Judah mourns,(PF)
    her cities languish;
they wail for the land,
    and a cry goes up from Jerusalem.
The nobles send their servants for water;
    they go to the cisterns
    but find no water.(PG)
They return with their jars unfilled;
    dismayed and despairing,
    they cover their heads.(PH)
The ground is cracked
    because there is no rain in the land;(PI)
the farmers are dismayed
    and cover their heads.
Even the doe in the field
    deserts her newborn fawn
    because there is no grass.(PJ)
Wild donkeys stand on the barren heights(PK)
    and pant like jackals;
their eyes fail
    for lack of food.”(PL)

Although our sins testify(PM) against us,
    do something, Lord, for the sake of your name.(PN)
For we have often rebelled;(PO)
    we have sinned(PP) against you.
You who are the hope(PQ) of Israel,
    its Savior(PR) in times of distress,(PS)
why are you like a stranger in the land,
    like a traveler who stays only a night?
Why are you like a man taken by surprise,
    like a warrior powerless to save?(PT)
You are among(PU) us, Lord,
    and we bear your name;(PV)
    do not forsake(PW) us!

10 This is what the Lord says about this people:

“They greatly love to wander;
    they do not restrain their feet.(PX)
So the Lord does not accept(PY) them;
    he will now remember(PZ) their wickedness
    and punish them for their sins.”(QA)

11 Then the Lord said to me, “Do not pray(QB) for the well-being of this people. 12 Although they fast, I will not listen to their cry;(QC) though they offer burnt offerings(QD) and grain offerings,(QE) I will not accept(QF) them. Instead, I will destroy them with the sword,(QG) famine(QH) and plague.”(QI)

13 But I said, “Alas, Sovereign Lord! The prophets(QJ) keep telling them, ‘You will not see the sword or suffer famine.(QK) Indeed, I will give you lasting peace(QL) in this place.’”

14 Then the Lord said to me, “The prophets are prophesying lies(QM) in my name. I have not sent(QN) them or appointed them or spoken to them. They are prophesying to you false visions,(QO) divinations,(QP) idolatries[o] and the delusions of their own minds. 15 Therefore this is what the Lord says about the prophets who are prophesying in my name: I did not send them, yet they are saying, ‘No sword or famine will touch this land.’ Those same prophets will perish(QQ) by sword and famine.(QR) 16 And the people they are prophesying to will be thrown out into the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and sword. There will be no one to bury(QS) them, their wives, their sons and their daughters.(QT) I will pour out on them the calamity they deserve.(QU)

17 “Speak this word to them:

“‘Let my eyes overflow with tears(QV)
    night and day without ceasing;
for the Virgin(QW) Daughter, my people,
    has suffered a grievous wound,
    a crushing blow.(QX)
18 If I go into the country,
    I see those slain by the sword;
if I go into the city,
    I see the ravages of famine.(QY)
Both prophet and priest
    have gone to a land they know not.(QZ)’”

19 Have you rejected Judah completely?(RA)
    Do you despise Zion?
Why have you afflicted us
    so that we cannot be healed?(RB)
We hoped for peace
    but no good has come,
for a time of healing
    but there is only terror.(RC)
20 We acknowledge(RD) our wickedness, Lord,
    and the guilt of our ancestors;(RE)
    we have indeed sinned(RF) against you.
21 For the sake of your name(RG) do not despise us;
    do not dishonor your glorious throne.(RH)
Remember your covenant(RI) with us
    and do not break it.
22 Do any of the worthless idols(RJ) of the nations bring rain?(RK)
    Do the skies themselves send down showers?
No, it is you, Lord our God.
    Therefore our hope is in you,
    for you are the one who does all this.(RL)

15 Then the Lord said to me: “Even if Moses(RM) and Samuel(RN) were to stand before me, my heart would not go out to this people.(RO) Send them away from my presence!(RP) Let them go! And if they ask you, ‘Where shall we go?’ tell them, ‘This is what the Lord says:

“‘Those destined for death, to death;
those for the sword, to the sword;(RQ)
those for starvation, to starvation;(RR)
those for captivity, to captivity.’(RS)

“I will send four kinds of destroyers(RT) against them,” declares the Lord, “the sword(RU) to kill and the dogs(RV) to drag away and the birds(RW) and the wild animals to devour and destroy.(RX) I will make them abhorrent(RY) to all the kingdoms of the earth(RZ) because of what Manasseh(SA) son of Hezekiah king of Judah did in Jerusalem.

“Who will have pity(SB) on you, Jerusalem?
    Who will mourn for you?
    Who will stop to ask how you are?
You have rejected(SC) me,” declares the Lord.
    “You keep on backsliding.
So I will reach out(SD) and destroy you;
    I am tired of holding back.(SE)
I will winnow(SF) them with a winnowing fork
    at the city gates of the land.
I will bring bereavement(SG) and destruction on my people,(SH)
    for they have not changed their ways.(SI)
I will make their widows(SJ) more numerous
    than the sand of the sea.
At midday I will bring a destroyer(SK)
    against the mothers of their young men;
suddenly I will bring down on them
    anguish and terror.(SL)
The mother of seven will grow faint(SM)
    and breathe her last.(SN)
Her sun will set while it is still day;
    she will be disgraced(SO) and humiliated.
I will put the survivors to the sword(SP)
    before their enemies,”(SQ)
declares the Lord.

10 Alas, my mother, that you gave me birth,(SR)
    a man with whom the whole land strives and contends!(SS)
I have neither lent(ST) nor borrowed,
    yet everyone curses(SU) me.

11 The Lord said,

“Surely I will deliver you(SV) for a good purpose;
    surely I will make your enemies plead(SW) with you
    in times of disaster and times of distress.

12 “Can a man break iron—
    iron from the north(SX)—or bronze?

13 “Your wealth(SY) and your treasures
    I will give as plunder,(SZ) without charge,(TA)
because of all your sins
    throughout your country.(TB)
14 I will enslave you to your enemies
    in[p] a land you do not know,(TC)
for my anger will kindle a fire(TD)
    that will burn against you.”

15 Lord, you understand;
    remember me and care for me.
    Avenge me on my persecutors.(TE)
You are long-suffering(TF)—do not take me away;
    think of how I suffer reproach for your sake.(TG)
16 When your words came, I ate(TH) them;
    they were my joy and my heart’s delight,(TI)
for I bear your name,(TJ)
    Lord God Almighty.
17 I never sat(TK) in the company of revelers,
    never made merry with them;
I sat alone because your hand(TL) was on me
    and you had filled me with indignation.
18 Why is my pain unending
    and my wound grievous and incurable?(TM)
You are to me like a deceptive brook,
    like a spring that fails.(TN)

19 Therefore this is what the Lord says:

“If you repent, I will restore you
    that you may serve(TO) me;
if you utter worthy, not worthless, words,
    you will be my spokesman.(TP)
Let this people turn to you,
    but you must not turn to them.
20 I will make you a wall(TQ) to this people,
    a fortified wall of bronze;
they will fight against you
    but will not overcome(TR) you,
for I am with you
    to rescue and save you,”(TS)
declares the Lord.
21 “I will save(TT) you from the hands of the wicked(TU)
    and deliver(TV) you from the grasp of the cruel.”(TW)
