Jeremiah 5:20-31

²⁰“Declare this in the house of Jacob
And proclaim it in Judah, saying,
²¹‘Now hear this, you foolish and ^[a]senseless people,
Who have ^(A)eyes but do not see,
Who have ears but do not hear.
²²Do you not ^(B)fear Me?’ declares the Lord.
‘Do you not tremble in My presence?
For I have ^(C)placed the sand as a boundary for the sea,
An eternal limit, and it will not cross over it.
Though the waves toss, they cannot prevail;
Though they roar, they will not cross over it.
²³But this people has a ^(D)stubborn and rebellious heart;
They have turned aside and departed.
²⁴They do not say in their heart,
“Let us now fear the Lord our God,
Who ^(E)gives rain in its season,
Both ^(F)the autumn rain and the spring rain,
Who keeps for us
The ^(G)appointed weeks of the harvest.”
²⁵Your ^(H)wrongdoings have turned these away,
And your sins have kept good away from you.
²⁶For wicked people are found among My people,
They ^(I)watch like fowlers ^[b]lying in wait;
They set a trap,
They catch people.
²⁷Like a cage full of birds,
So their houses are full of ^(J)deceit;
Therefore they have become great and rich.
²⁸They are ^(K)fat, they are sleek,
They also ^[c]excel in deeds of wickedness;
They do not plead the cause,
The cause of the ^[d]^(L)orphan, so that they may be successful;
And they do not ^[e]defend the rights of the poor.
²⁹^(M)Shall I not punish them for these things?’ declares the Lord,
‘Or shall I not avenge Myself
On a nation such as this?’

³⁰“An appalling and ^(N)horrible thing
Has happened in the land:
³¹The ^(O)prophets prophesy falsely,
And the priests rule ^[f]on their own authority;
And My people ^(P)love it this way!
But what will you do ^[g]when the end comes?

Romans 3:19-31

¹⁹Now we know that whatever the ^(A)Law says, it speaks to ^(B)those who are ^[a]under the Law, so that every mouth may be closed and ^(C)all the world may become accountable to God; ²⁰because ^(D)by the works ^[b]of the Law ^[c]none of mankind will be justified in His sight; for ^[d]^(E)through the Law comes ^[e]knowledge of sin.

Justification by Faith

²¹But now apart ^[f]from the Law ^(F)the righteousness of God has been revealed, being ^(G)witnessed by the ^[g]Law and the Prophets, ²²but it is the ^(H)righteousness of God through ^(I)faith ^(J)in Jesus Christ for ^(K)all those ^[h]who believe; for ^(L)there is no distinction, ²³for all ^[i]^(M)have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, ²⁴being justified as a gift ^(N)by His grace through ^(O)the redemption which is in Christ Jesus, ²⁵whom God displayed publicly as ^(P)a ^[j]propitiation ^[k]^(Q)in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, ^[l]because in God’s merciful ^(R)restraint He ^(S)let the sins previously committed go unpunished; ²⁶for the demonstration, that is, of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who ^[m]has faith in Jesus.

²⁷Where then is ^(T)boasting? It has been excluded. By ^(U)what kind of law? Of works? No, but by a law of faith. ²⁸^[n]For ^(V)we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from works ^[o]of the Law. ²⁹Or ^(W)is God the God of Jews only? Is He not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, ³⁰since indeed ^(X)God ^(Y)who will justify the ^[p]circumcised ^[q]by faith and the ^[r]uncircumcised through faith ^(Z)is one.

³¹Do we then nullify ^[s]the Law through faith? ^(AA)Far from it! On the contrary, we ^(AB)establish the Law.

Jesus Teaches at the Feast

7 After these things Jesus ^(A)was walking in Galilee, for He was unwilling to walk in Judea because ^(B)the Jews ^(C)were seeking to kill Him. ²Now the feast of the Jews, ^(D)the Feast of Booths, was near. ³So His ^(E)brothers said to Him, “Move on from here and go into Judea, so that Your ^(F)disciples also may see Your works which You are doing. ⁴For no one does anything in secret ^[a]when he himself is striving to be known publicly. If You are doing these things, show Yourself to the world.” ⁵For not even His ^(G)brothers believed in Him. ⁶So Jesus *said to them, “^(H)My time is not yet here, but your time is always ready. ⁷^(I)The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify about it, that ^(J)its deeds are evil. ⁸Go up to the feast yourselves; I am not going up to this feast, because ^(K)My time has not yet fully arrived.” ⁹Now having said these things to them, He stayed in Galilee.

¹⁰But when His ^(L)brothers had gone up to the feast, then He Himself also went up, not publicly, but as though in secret. ¹¹^(M)So the Jews ^(N)were looking for Him at the feast and saying, “Where is He?” ¹²And there was a great deal of talk about Him in secret among the crowds: ^(O)some were saying, “He is a good man”; others were saying, “No, on the contrary, He is misleading the people.” ¹³However, no one was speaking openly about Him, for ^(P)fear of ^[b]the Jews.
