Jeremiah 4:9-28

New International Version

⁹“In that day,” declares the Lord,
“the king and the officials will lose heart,^(A)
the priests will be horrified,
and the prophets will be appalled.”^(B)

¹⁰Then I said, “Alas, Sovereign Lord! How completely you have deceived^(C) this people and Jerusalem by saying, ‘You will have peace,’^(D) when the sword is at our throats!”

¹¹At that time this people and Jerusalem will be told, “A scorching wind^(E) from the barren heights in the desert blows toward my people, but not to winnow or cleanse; ¹²a wind^(F) too strong for that comes from me. Now I pronounce my judgments^(G) against them.”

¹³Look! He advances like the clouds,^(H)
    his chariots^(I) come like a whirlwind,^(J)
his horses^(K) are swifter than eagles.^(L)
    Woe to us! We are ruined!^(M)
¹⁴Jerusalem, wash^(N) the evil from your heart and be saved.^(O)
    How long^(P) will you harbor wicked thoughts?
¹⁵A voice is announcing from Dan,^(Q)
    proclaiming disaster from the hills of Ephraim.^(R)
¹⁶“Tell this to the nations,
    proclaim concerning Jerusalem:
‘A besieging army is coming from a distant land,^(S)
    raising a war cry^(T) against the cities of Judah.^(U)
¹⁷They surround^(V) her like men guarding a field,
    because she has rebelled^(W) against me,’”
declares the Lord.
¹⁸“Your own conduct and actions^(X)
    have brought this on you.^(Y)
This is your punishment.
    How bitter^(Z) it is!
    How it pierces to the heart!”

¹⁹Oh, my anguish, my anguish!^(AA)
    I writhe in pain.^(AB)
Oh, the agony of my heart!
    My heart pounds^(AC) within me,
    I cannot keep silent.^(AD)
For I have heard the sound of the trumpet;^(AE)
    I have heard the battle cry.^(AF)
²⁰Disaster follows disaster;^(AG)
    the whole land lies in ruins.^(AH)
In an instant my tents^(AI) are destroyed,
    my shelter in a moment.
²¹How long must I see the battle standard^(AJ)
    and hear the sound of the trumpet?^(AK)

²²“My people are fools;^(AL)
    they do not know me.^(AM)
They are senseless children;
    they have no understanding.^(AN)
They are skilled in doing evil;^(AO)
    they know not how to do good.”^(AP)

²³I looked at the earth,
    and it was formless and empty;^(AQ)
and at the heavens,
    and their light^(AR) was gone.
²⁴I looked at the mountains,
    and they were quaking;^(AS)
    all the hills were swaying.
²⁵I looked, and there were no people;
    every bird in the sky had flown away.^(AT)
²⁶I looked, and the fruitful land was a desert;^(AU)
    all its towns lay in ruins^(AV)
    before the Lord, before his fierce anger.^(AW)

²⁷This is what the Lord says:

“The whole land will be ruined,^(AX)
    though I will not destroy^(AY) it completely.
²⁸Therefore the earth will mourn^(AZ)
    and the heavens above grow dark,^(BA)
because I have spoken and will not relent,^(BB)
    I have decided and will not turn back.^(BC)”

¹Hasten, O God, to save me;
come quickly, Lord, to help me.^(B)

²May those who want to take my life^(C)
    be put to shame and confusion;
may all who desire my ruin
    be turned back in disgrace.^(D)
³May those who say to me, “Aha! Aha!”^(E)
    turn back because of their shame.
⁴But may all who seek you^(F)
    rejoice and be glad^(G) in you;
may those who long for your saving help always say,
    “The Lord is great!”^(H)

⁵But as for me, I am poor and needy;^(I)
come quickly to me,^(J) O God.
You are my help^(K) and my deliverer;^(L)

Romans 2:12-24

¹²All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law^(A) will be judged by the law. ¹³For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey^(B) the law who will be declared righteous. ¹⁴(Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law,^(C) they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law. ¹⁵They show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts sometimes accusing them and at other times even defending them.) ¹⁶This will take place on the day when God judges people’s secrets^(D) through Jesus Christ,^(E) as my gospel^(F) declares.

The Jews and the Law

¹⁷Now you, if you call yourself a Jew; if you rely on the law and boast in God;^(G) ¹⁸if you know his will and approve of what is superior because you are instructed by the law; ¹⁹if you are convinced that you are a guide for the blind, a light for those who are in the dark, ²⁰an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of little children, because you have in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth— ²¹you, then, who teach others, do you not teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you steal?^(H) ²²You who say that people should not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?^(I) ²³You who boast in the law,^(J) do you dishonor God by breaking the law? ²⁴As it is written: “God’s name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.”^[a]^(K)

²⁸“Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming^(P) when all who are in their graves will hear his voice ²⁹and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned.^(Q)
