Why are You like a confused person,
Like a warrior who (A)cannot save?
Yet (B)You are in our midst, Lord,
And we are (C)called by Your name;
Do not leave us!”

17 You will say this word to them,
(A)Let my eyes stream down tears night and day,
And let them not cease;
For the virgin (B)daughter of my people has been crushed with a mighty blow,
With a sorely (C)infected wound.
18 If I (D)go out to the country,
There are those killed by the sword!
Or if I enter the city,
There are diseases from famine!
For (E)both prophet and priest
Have wandered around in the land that they do not know.’”

19 Have You completely (F)rejected Judah?
Or have [a]You loathed Zion?
Why have You stricken us so that we (G)are beyond healing?
We (H)waited for peace, but nothing good came;
And for a time of healing, but behold, terror!
20 We (I)know our wickedness, Lord,
The wrongdoing of our fathers, for (J)we have sinned against You.
21 Do not despise us, (K)for the sake of Your own name;
Do not disgrace the (L)throne of Your glory.
Remember and do not annul Your covenant with us.
22 Are there any among the [b](M)idols of the nations who (N)give rain?
Or can the heavens grant showers?
Is it not You, Lord our God?
Therefore we (O)wait for You,
For You are the one who has done all these things.

Slave and Free

21 Tell me, you who want to be under law, do you not (A)listen to the Law? 22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons, (B)one by the slave woman and (C)one by the free woman. 23 But (D)the son by the slave woman [a]was born according to the flesh, and (E)the son by the free woman through the promise. 24 [b](F)This is speaking allegorically, for these women are two covenants: one coming from (G)Mount Sinai giving birth to children [c]who are to be (H)slaves; [d]she is Hagar. 25 Now this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is enslaved with her children. 26 But (I)the Jerusalem above is free; [e]she is our mother. 27 For it is written:

(J)Rejoice, infertile one, you who do not give birth;
Break forth and shout, you who are not in labor;
For the children of the desolate one are more numerous
Than those of the one who has a husband.”

28 And you, brothers and sisters, (K)like Isaac, are (L)children of promise. 29 But as at that time (M)the son who was born according to the flesh (N)persecuted the one who was born according to the Spirit, (O)so it is even now. 30 But what does the Scripture say?

(P)Drive out the slave woman and her son,
For (Q)the son of the slave woman shall not be an heir with the son of the free woman.”

31 So then, brothers and sisters, we are not children of a slave woman, but of the free woman.

Follow the Spirit

(R)It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore (S)keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a (T)yoke of slavery.

11 (A)And the Pharisees came out and began to argue with Him, (B)demanding from Him a [a]sign from heaven, [b]to test Him. 12 (C)Sighing deeply in His spirit, He *said, “Why does this generation demand a [c]sign? Truly I say to you, [d](D)no [e]sign will be given to this generation!” 13 And leaving them, He again embarked and went away to the other side.

14 And the disciples had forgotten to take bread, and did not have more than one loaf in the boat with them. 15 And He was giving orders to them, saying, (E)Watch out! Beware of the [f]leaven of the Pharisees, and the leaven of (F)Herod.” 16 And they began to discuss with one another the fact that they had no bread. 17 And Jesus, aware of this, *said to them, “Why are you discussing the fact that you have no bread? (G)Do you not yet comprehend or understand? Do you still have your heart [g]hardened? 18 (H)Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear? And do you not remember, 19 when I broke (I)the five loaves for the five thousand, how many (J)baskets full of broken pieces you picked up?” They *said to Him, “Twelve.” 20 “When I broke (K)the seven for the four thousand, how many large (L)baskets full of broken pieces did you pick up?” And they *said to Him, “Seven.” 21 And He was saying to them, (M)Do you not yet understand?”
