But the Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you. Do not be afraid(A) of them, for I am with you(B) and will rescue(C) you,” declares the Lord.(D)

Then the Lord reached out his hand and touched(E) my mouth and said to me, “I have put my words in your mouth.(F) 10 See, today I appoint you over nations(G) and kingdoms to uproot(H) and tear down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant.”(I)

11 The word of the Lord came to me: “What do you see, Jeremiah?”(J)

“I see the branch of an almond tree,” I replied.

12 The Lord said to me, “You have seen correctly, for I am watching[a](K) to see that my word is fulfilled.”

13 The word of the Lord came to me again: “What do you see?”(L)

“I see a pot that is boiling,” I answered. “It is tilting toward us from the north.”

14 The Lord said to me, “From the north(M) disaster will be poured out on all who live in the land. 15 I am about to summon all the peoples of the northern kingdoms,” declares the Lord.

“Their kings will come and set up their thrones
    in the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem;
they will come against all her surrounding walls
    and against all the towns of Judah.(N)
16 I will pronounce my judgments(O) on my people
    because of their wickedness(P) in forsaking me,(Q)
in burning incense to other gods(R)
    and in worshiping(S) what their hands have made.(T)

17 “Get yourself ready! Stand up and say(U) to them whatever I command you. Do not be terrified(V) by them, or I will terrify you before them. 18 Today I have made you(W) a fortified city, an iron pillar and a bronze wall to stand against the whole land—against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests and the people of the land. 19 They will fight against you but will not overcome(X) you, for I am with you(Y) and will rescue(Z) you,” declares the Lord.

  1. Jeremiah 1:12 The Hebrew for watching sounds like the Hebrew for almond tree.

But the Lord said unto me, Say not, I am a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak.

Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the Lord.

Then the Lord put forth his hand, and touched my mouth. And the Lord said unto me, Behold, I have put my words in thy mouth.

10 See, I have this day set thee over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out, and to pull down, and to destroy, and to throw down, to build, and to plant.

11 Moreover the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, Jeremiah, what seest thou? And I said, I see a rod of an almond tree.

12 Then said the Lord unto me, Thou hast well seen: for I will hasten my word to perform it.

13 And the word of the Lord came unto me the second time, saying, What seest thou? And I said, I see a seething pot; and the face thereof is toward the north.

14 Then the Lord said unto me, Out of the north an evil shall break forth upon all the inhabitants of the land.

15 For, lo, I will call all the families of the kingdoms of the north, saith the Lord; and they shall come, and they shall set every one his throne at the entering of the gates of Jerusalem, and against all the walls thereof round about, and against all the cities of Judah.

16 And I will utter my judgments against them touching all their wickedness, who have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, and worshipped the works of their own hands.

17 Thou therefore gird up thy loins, and arise, and speak unto them all that I command thee: be not dismayed at their faces, lest I confound thee before them.

18 For, behold, I have made thee this day a defenced city, and an iron pillar, and brasen walls against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, against the princes thereof, against the priests thereof, and against the people of the land.

19 And they shall fight against thee; but they shall not prevail against thee; for I am with thee, saith the Lord, to deliver thee.

15 Lord, you understand;
    remember me and care for me.
    Avenge me on my persecutors.(A)
You are long-suffering(B)—do not take me away;
    think of how I suffer reproach for your sake.(C)
16 When your words came, I ate(D) them;
    they were my joy and my heart’s delight,(E)
for I bear your name,(F)
    Lord God Almighty.
17 I never sat(G) in the company of revelers,
    never made merry with them;
I sat alone because your hand(H) was on me
    and you had filled me with indignation.
18 Why is my pain unending
    and my wound grievous and incurable?(I)
You are to me like a deceptive brook,
    like a spring that fails.(J)

19 Therefore this is what the Lord says:

“If you repent, I will restore you
    that you may serve(K) me;
if you utter worthy, not worthless, words,
    you will be my spokesman.(L)
Let this people turn to you,
    but you must not turn to them.
20 I will make you a wall(M) to this people,
    a fortified wall of bronze;
they will fight against you
    but will not overcome(N) you,
for I am with you
    to rescue and save you,”(O)
declares the Lord.
21 “I will save(P) you from the hands of the wicked(Q)
    and deliver(R) you from the grasp of the cruel.”(S)

15 O Lord, thou knowest: remember me, and visit me, and revenge me of my persecutors; take me not away in thy longsuffering: know that for thy sake I have suffered rebuke.

16 Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O Lord God of hosts.

17 I sat not in the assembly of the mockers, nor rejoiced; I sat alone because of thy hand: for thou hast filled me with indignation.

18 Why is my pain perpetual, and my wound incurable, which refuseth to be healed? wilt thou be altogether unto me as a liar, and as waters that fail?

19 Therefore thus saith the Lord, If thou return, then will I bring thee again, and thou shalt stand before me: and if thou take forth the precious from the vile, thou shalt be as my mouth: let them return unto thee; but return not thou unto them.

20 And I will make thee unto this people a fenced brasen wall: and they shall fight against thee, but they shall not prevail against thee: for I am with thee to save thee and to deliver thee, saith the Lord.

21 And I will deliver thee out of the hand of the wicked, and I will redeem thee out of the hand of the terrible.
