Israel Forsakes God

The word(A) of the Lord came to me: “Go and proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem:

“This is what the Lord says:

“‘I remember the devotion of your youth,(B)
how as a bride you loved me
and followed me through the wilderness,(C)
    through a land not sown.
Israel was holy(D) to the Lord,(E)
    the firstfruits(F) of his harvest;
all who devoured(G) her were held guilty,(H)
    and disaster overtook them,’”
declares the Lord.

20 “Long ago you broke off your yoke(A)
    and tore off your bonds;(B)
you said, ‘I will not serve you!’(C)
Indeed, on every high hill(D)
    and under every spreading tree(E)
you lay down as a prostitute.(F)
21 I had planted(G) you like a choice vine(H)
    of sound and reliable stock.
How then did you turn against me
    into a corrupt,(I) wild vine?
22 Although you wash(J) yourself with soap(K)
and use an abundance of cleansing powder,
the stain of your guilt is still before me,”
declares the Sovereign Lord.(L)
23 “How can you say, ‘I am not defiled;(M)
I have not run after the Baals’?(N)
See how you behaved in the valley;(O)
    consider what you have done.
You are a swift she-camel
    running(P) here and there,
24 a wild donkey(Q) accustomed to the desert,(R)
sniffing the wind in her craving—
in her heat who can restrain her?
Any males that pursue her need not tire themselves;
at mating time they will find her.
25 Do not run until your feet are bare
    and your throat is dry.
But you said, ‘It’s no use!(S)
    I love foreign gods,(T)
and I must go after them.’(U)

32 Does a young woman forget her jewelry,
    a bride her wedding ornaments?
Yet my people have forgotten(A) me,
    days without number.
33 How skilled you are at pursuing(B) love!
Even the worst of women can learn from your ways.

“If a man divorces(A) his wife
and she leaves him and marries another man,
should he return to her again?
Would not the land be completely defiled?(B)
But you have lived as a prostitute with many lovers(C)
would you now return to me?”(D)
declares the Lord.
“Look up to the barren heights(E) and see.
Is there any place where you have not been ravished?
By the roadside(F) you sat waiting for lovers,
sat like a nomad in the desert.
You have defiled the land(G)
    with your prostitution(H) and wickedness.
Therefore the showers have been withheld,(I)
and no spring rains(J) have fallen.
Yet you have the brazen(K) look of a prostitute;
you refuse to blush with shame.(L)
Have you not just called to me:
‘My Father,(M) my friend from my youth,(N)
will you always be angry?(O)
    Will your wrath continue forever?’
This is how you talk,
but you do all the evil you can.”

Israel Punished and Restored

“Rebuke your mother,(A) rebuke her,
for she is not my wife,
and I am not her husband.
Let her remove the adulterous(B) look from her face
and the unfaithfulness from between her breasts.
Otherwise I will strip(C) her naked
and make her as bare as on the day she was born;(D)
I will make her like a desert,(E)
turn her into a parched land,
    and slay her with thirst.
I will not show my love to her children,(F)
because they are the children of adultery.(G)
Their mother has been unfaithful
and has conceived them in disgrace.
She said, ‘I will go after my lovers,(H)
who give me my food and my water,
my wool and my linen, my olive oil and my drink.’(I)
Therefore I will block her path with thornbushes;
I will wall her in so that she cannot find her way.(J)
She will chase after her lovers but not catch them;
she will look for them but not find them.(K)
Then she will say,
‘I will go back to my husband(L) as at first,(M)
for then I was better off(N) than now.’
She has not acknowledged(O) that I was the one
who gave her the grain, the new wine and oil,(P)
who lavished on her the silver and gold(Q)
    which they used for Baal.(R)

“Therefore I will take away my grain(S) when it ripens,
and my new wine(T) when it is ready.
I will take back my wool and my linen,
intended to cover her naked body.
10 So now I will expose(U) her lewdness
before the eyes of her lovers;(V)
no one will take her out of my hands.(W)
11 I will stop(X) all her celebrations:(Y)
her yearly festivals, her New Moons,
her Sabbath days—all her appointed festivals.(Z)
12 I will ruin her vines(AA) and her fig trees,(AB)
which she said were her pay from her lovers;(AC)
I will make them a thicket,(AD)
and wild animals will devour them.(AE)
13 I will punish her for the days
she burned incense(AF) to the Baals;(AG)
she decked herself with rings and jewelry,(AH)
    and went after her lovers,(AI)
    but me she forgot,(AJ)
declares the Lord.(AK)
