14 But if you have (A)bitter envy and [a]self-seeking in your hearts, (B)do not boast and lie against the truth. 15 (C)This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. 16 For (D)where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there. 17 But (E)the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, (F)without partiality (G)and without hypocrisy. 18 (H)Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

Pride Promotes Strife

Where do [b]wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure (I)that war in your members? You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and [c]war. [d]Yet you do not have because you do not ask. (J)You ask and do not receive, (K)because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures. [e]Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that (L)friendship with the world is enmity with God? (M)Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.

Submit Yourselves to God

What causes fights and quarrels(L) among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle(M) within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill.(N) You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive,(O) because you ask with wrong motives,(P) that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.

You adulterous(Q) people,[a] don’t you know that friendship with the world(R) means enmity against God?(S) Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.(T)
