A Glorified Zion

60 (A)Arise, shine; for your (B)light has come,
And the (C)glory of the Lord has risen upon you.
For behold, (D)darkness will cover the earth
And deep darkness the peoples;
But the Lord will rise upon you
And His (E)glory will appear upon you.
(F)Nations will come to your light,
And kings to the brightness of your rising.

(G)Raise your eyes all around and see;
They all gather together, they (H)come to you.
Your sons will come from afar,
And your (I)daughters will be [a]carried on the hip.
Then you will see and be (J)radiant,
And your heart will [b]thrill and rejoice;
Because the [c](K)abundance of the sea will be turned to you,
The (L)wealth of the nations will come to you.
A multitude of camels will cover you,
The young camels of Midian and (M)Ephah;
All those from (N)Sheba will come;
They will bring (O)gold and frankincense,
And (P)proclaim good news of the praises of the Lord.
All the flocks of (Q)Kedar will be gathered to you,
The rams of Nebaioth will serve you;
They will go up on My (R)altar with acceptance,
And I will (S)glorify My glorious house.
(T)Who are these who fly like a cloud
And like the doves to their windows?
Certainly the (U)coastlands will wait for Me;
And the (V)ships of Tarshish will come first,
To (W)bring your sons from afar,
Their silver and their gold with them,
For the name of the Lord your God,
And for the Holy One of Israel because He has (X)glorified you.

10 (Y)Foreigners will build up your walls,
And their (Z)kings will serve you;
For in My (AA)wrath I struck you,
And in My favor I have had compassion on you.
11 Your (AB)gates will be open continually;
They will not be closed day or night,
So that people may (AC)bring you the wealth of the nations,
With (AD)their kings led in procession.
12 For the (AE)nation and the kingdom which will not serve you will perish,
And the nations will be utterly ruined.
13 The (AF)glory of Lebanon will come to you,
The (AG)juniper, the elm tree and the [d]cedar together,
To beautify the place of My sanctuary;
And I will make the (AH)place of My feet glorious.
14 The (AI)sons of those who afflicted you will come bowing to you,
And all those who despised you will bow down at the soles of your feet;
And they will call you the (AJ)city of the Lord,
The (AK)Zion of the Holy One of Israel.

15 “Whereas you have been (AL)forsaken and (AM)hated
With no one passing through,
I will make you an (AN)object of pride forever,
A joy from generation to generation.
16 You will also (AO)suck the milk of nations,
And suck the breast of kings;
Then you will know that I, the Lord, am your (AP)Savior
And your (AQ)Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.
17 Instead of bronze I will bring gold,
And instead of iron I will bring silver,
And instead of wood, bronze,
And instead of stones, iron.
And I will make peace your administrators,
And righteousness your overseers.
18 (AR)Violence will not be heard again in your land,
Nor (AS)devastation or destruction within your borders;
But you will call your (AT)walls salvation, and your (AU)gates praise.
19 No longer will you have the (AV)sun for light by day,
Nor will the moon give you light for brightness;
But you will have the (AW)Lord as an everlasting light,
And your (AX)God as your [e]glory.
20 Your (AY)sun will no longer set,
Nor will your moon wane;
For you will have the Lord as an everlasting light,
And the days of your (AZ)mourning will be over.
21 Then all your (BA)people will be righteous;
They will (BB)possess the land forever,
The branch of [f]My planting,
The (BC)work of My hands,
That I may be (BD)glorified.
22 The (BE)smallest one will become a thousand,
And the least one a mighty nation.
I, the Lord, will bring it about quickly in its time.”

Exaltation of the Afflicted

61 The (BF)Spirit of the Lord [g]God is upon me,
Because the Lord anointed me
To (BG)bring good news to the (BH)humble;
He has sent me to (BI)bind up the brokenhearted,
To (BJ)proclaim [h]release to captives
And [i]freedom to prisoners;
To (BK)proclaim the favorable year of the Lord
And the (BL)day of vengeance of our God;
To (BM)comfort all who mourn,
To (BN)grant those who mourn in Zion,
Giving them a garland instead of ashes,
The (BO)oil of gladness instead of mourning,
The cloak of praise instead of a disheartened spirit.
So they will be called [j](BP)oaks of righteousness,
The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.

Then they will (BQ)rebuild the ancient ruins,
They will raise up the former devastations;
And they will repair the ruined cities,
The desolations of many generations.
(BR)Strangers will stand and pasture your flocks,
And [k]foreigners will be your farmers and your vinedressers.
But you will be called the (BS)priests of the Lord;
You will be spoken of as (BT)ministers of our God.
You will eat the (BU)wealth of nations,
And you will boast in their [l]riches.
Instead of your (BV)shame you will have a (BW)double portion,
And instead of humiliation they will shout for joy over their portion.
Therefore they will possess a double portion in their land,
(BX)Everlasting joy will be theirs.
For I, the Lord, (BY)love justice,
I hate robbery [m]in the burnt offering;
And I will faithfully give them their reward,
And make an (BZ)everlasting covenant with them.
Then their offspring will be known among the nations,
And their descendants in the midst of the peoples.
All who see them will recognize them
Because they are the (CA)offspring whom the Lord has blessed.

10 I will (CB)rejoice greatly in the Lord,
My soul will be joyful in (CC)my God;
For He has (CD)clothed me with garments of salvation,
He has wrapped me with a robe of righteousness,
As a groom puts on a turban,
And (CE)as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
11 For as the (CF)earth produces its sprouts,
And as a garden causes the things sown in it to spring up,
So the Lord [n]God will (CG)cause (CH)righteousness and praise
To spring up before all the nations.

Zion’s Glory and New Name

62 For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent,
And for Jerusalem’s sake I will not keep quiet,
Until her (CI)righteousness goes forth like brightness,
And her (CJ)salvation like a torch that is burning.
The (CK)nations will see your righteousness,
And all kings your glory;
And you will be called by a new (CL)name
Which the mouth of the Lord will designate.
You will also be a (CM)crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord,
And a royal headband in the hand of your God.
It will no longer be said to you, “[o](CN)Forsaken,”
Nor to your land will it any longer be said, “[p]Desolate”;
But you will be called, “[q]My delight is in her,”
And your land, “[r](CO)Married”;
For the (CP)Lord delights in you,
And to Him your land will be married.
For as a young man marries a virgin,
So your sons will marry you;
And as the [s]groom rejoices over the bride,
So your (CQ)God will rejoice over you.

On your walls, Jerusalem, I have appointed (CR)watchmen;
All day and all night they will never keep silent.
You who (CS)profess the Lord, take no rest for yourselves;
And (CT)give Him no rest until He establishes
And makes (CU)Jerusalem an object of praise on the earth.
(CV)The Lord has sworn by His right hand and by His mighty arm:
“I will (CW)never again give your grain as food for your enemies,
Nor will [t]foreigners drink your new wine for which you have labored.”
But those who (CX)harvest it will eat it and praise the Lord;
And those who gather it will drink it in the courtyards of My sanctuary.

10 Go through, (CY)go through the gates,
Clear a way [u]for the people!
(CZ)Build up, build up the (DA)highway,
Remove the stones, lift up a (DB)flag over the peoples.
11 Behold, the Lord has proclaimed to the (DC)end of the earth:
(DD)Say to the daughter of Zion, “Behold, your (DE)salvation is coming;
(DF)Behold His reward is with Him, and His compensation before Him.”
12 And they will call them, “(DG)The holy people,
The (DH)redeemed of the Lord”;
And you will be called, “Sought Out, A City (DI)Not Abandoned.”

Surely the islands(AB) look to me;
    in the lead are the ships of Tarshish,[a](AC)

Though in anger I struck you,
    in favor(AK) I will show you compassion.(AL)

and will call you the City(AX) of the Lord,
    Zion(AY) of the Holy One(AZ) of Israel.

15 “Although you have been forsaken(BA) and hated,
    with no one traveling(BB) through,
I will make you the everlasting pride(BC)

The Year of the Lord’s Favor

61 The Spirit(CB) of the Sovereign Lord(CC) is on me,
    because the Lord has anointed(CD) me
    to proclaim good news(CE) to the poor.(CF)
He has sent me to bind up(CG) the brokenhearted,
    to proclaim freedom(CH) for the captives(CI)
    and release from darkness for the prisoners,[b]
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor(CJ)
    and the day of vengeance(CK) of our God,
to comfort(CL) all who mourn,(CM)
    and provide for those who grieve in Zion—
to bestow on them a crown(CN) of beauty
    instead of ashes,(CO)
the oil(CP) of joy
    instead of mourning,(CQ)
and a garment of praise
    instead of a spirit of despair.
They will be called oaks of righteousness,
    a planting(CR) of the Lord
    for the display of his splendor.(CS)

They will rebuild the ancient ruins(CT)
    and restore the places long devastated;
they will renew the ruined cities
    that have been devastated for generations.
Strangers(CU) will shepherd your flocks;
    foreigners will work your fields and vineyards.
And you will be called priests(CV) of the Lord,
    you will be named ministers of our God.
You will feed on the wealth(CW) of nations,
    and in their riches you will boast.

Instead of your shame(CX)
    you will receive a double(CY) portion,
and instead of disgrace
    you will rejoice in your inheritance.
And so you will inherit(CZ) a double portion in your land,
    and everlasting joy(DA) will be yours.

“For I, the Lord, love justice;(DB)
    I hate robbery and wrongdoing.
In my faithfulness I will reward my people
    and make an everlasting covenant(DC) with them.
Their descendants(DD) will be known among the nations
    and their offspring among the peoples.
All who see them will acknowledge
    that they are a people the Lord has blessed.”(DE)

10 I delight greatly in the Lord;
    my soul rejoices(DF) in my God.
For he has clothed me with garments of salvation
    and arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness,(DG)
as a bridegroom adorns his head(DH) like a priest,
    and as a bride(DI) adorns herself with her jewels.
11 For as the soil makes the sprout come up
    and a garden(DJ) causes seeds to grow,
so the Sovereign Lord will make righteousness(DK)
    and praise spring up before all nations.

Zion’s New Name

62 For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent,(DL)
    for Jerusalem’s sake I will not remain quiet,
till her vindication(DM) shines out like the dawn,(DN)
    her salvation(DO) like a blazing torch.
The nations(DP) will see your vindication,
    and all kings your glory;
you will be called by a new name(DQ)
    that the mouth of the Lord will bestow.
You will be a crown(DR) of splendor in the Lord’s hand,
    a royal diadem in the hand of your God.
No longer will they call you Deserted,(DS)
    or name your land Desolate.(DT)
But you will be called Hephzibah,[c](DU)
    and your land Beulah[d];
for the Lord will take delight(DV) in you,
    and your land will be married.(DW)
As a young man marries a young woman,
    so will your Builder marry you;
as a bridegroom(DX) rejoices over his bride,
    so will your God rejoice(DY) over you.

I have posted watchmen(DZ) on your walls, Jerusalem;
    they will never be silent day or night.
You who call on the Lord,
    give yourselves no rest,(EA)
and give him no rest(EB) till he establishes Jerusalem
    and makes her the praise(EC) of the earth.

The Lord has sworn(ED) by his right hand
    and by his mighty arm:
“Never again will I give your grain(EE)
    as food for your enemies,
and never again will foreigners drink the new wine
    for which you have toiled;
but those who harvest it will eat(EF) it
    and praise the Lord,(EG)
and those who gather the grapes will drink it
    in the courts of my sanctuary.”(EH)

10 Pass through, pass through the gates!(EI)
    Prepare the way for the people.
Build up, build up the highway!(EJ)
    Remove the stones.
Raise a banner(EK) for the nations.

11 The Lord has made proclamation
    to the ends of the earth:(EL)
“Say to Daughter Zion,(EM)
    ‘See, your Savior comes!(EN)
See, his reward is with him,
    and his recompense accompanies him.’”(EO)
12 They will be called(EP) the Holy People,(EQ)
    the Redeemed(ER) of the Lord;
and you will be called Sought After,
    the City No Longer Deserted.(ES)

(A)In the beginning was (B)the Word, and the Word was (C)with God, and (D)the Word was God. [a]He was in the beginning with God. (E)All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him [b]not even one thing came into being that has come into being. (F)In Him was life, and the life was (G)the Light of mankind. And (H)the Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not [c]grasp it.

The Witness John the Baptist

A man [d]came, one sent from God, and his name was (I)John. [e]He came [f](J)as a witness, to testify about the Light, (K)so that all might believe through him. [g](L)He was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light.

[h]This was (M)the true Light [i]that, coming into the world, enlightens every person. 10 He was in the world, and (N)the world came into being through Him, and yet the world did not [j]know Him. 11 He came to His [k]own, and His own people did not [l]accept Him. 12 But [m]as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become (O)children of God, (P)to those who [n]believe in His name, 13 (Q)who were [o]born, not of [p]blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of a man, but of God.

The Word Made Flesh

14 And (R)the Word (S)became flesh, and (T)dwelt among us; and (U)we saw His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of (V)grace and (W)truth. 15 John *(X)testified about Him and called out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘(Y)He who is coming after me has proved to be [q]my superior, (Z)because He existed before me.’” 16 For of His (AA)fullness [r]we have all received, and [s]grace upon grace. 17 For (AB)the Law was given through Moses; (AC)grace and (AD)truth [t]were realized through Jesus Christ. 18 (AE)No one has seen God at any time; (AF)God the only Son, who is (AG)in the [u]arms of the Father, (AH)He has [v]explained Him.

The Testimony of John the Baptist

19 This is (AI)the testimony of John, when (AJ)the Jews sent priests and Levites to him (AK)from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” 20 And he confessed and did not deny; and this is what he confessed: “(AL)I am not the [w]Christ.” 21 And so they asked him, “What then? Are you (AM)Elijah?” And he *said, “I am not.” “Are you (AN)the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” 22 Then they said to him, “Who are you? Tell us, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” 23 He said, “I am (AO)the voice of one calling [x]out in the wilderness, ‘Make the way of the Lord straight,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.”

24 And the messengers had been sent from the Pharisees. 25 They asked him, and said to him, “Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the [y]Christ, nor Elijah, nor (AP)the Prophet?” 26 John answered them, saying, “(AQ)I baptize [z]in water, but among you stands One whom you do not know. 27 It is (AR)He who comes after me, of whom I am not worthy even to untie the (AS)strap of His sandal.” 28 These things took place in Bethany (AT)beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing people.

29 The next day he *saw Jesus coming to him, and *said, “Behold, (AU)the Lamb of God who (AV)takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is He in behalf of whom I said, ‘(AW)After me is coming a Man who has proved to be [aa]my superior, (AX)because He existed before me.’ 31 And I did not recognize [ab]Him, but so that He would be revealed to Israel, I came baptizing [ac]in water.” 32 And John (AY)testified, saying, “(AZ)I have seen the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him. 33 And I did not recognize [ad]Him, but He who sent me to baptize [ae]in water said to me, ‘He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, (BA)this is the One who baptizes [af]in the Holy Spirit.’ 34 And I myself have seen, and have testified that this is (BB)the [ag]Son of God.”

Jesus’ Public Ministry; First Converts

35 Again (BC)the next day John was standing [ah]with two of his disciples, 36 and he looked at Jesus as He walked, and *said, “Behold, (BD)the Lamb of God!” 37 And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. 38 And Jesus turned and saw them following, and *said to them, “What are you seeking?” They said to Him, “(BE)Rabbi (which translated means Teacher), where are You staying?” 39 He *said to them, “Come, and you will see.” So they came and saw where He was staying, and they stayed with Him that day; it was about the [ai]tenth hour. 40 (BF)One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41 He first *found his own brother Simon and *said to him, “We have found the (BG)Messiah” (which translated means [aj]Christ). 42 He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of [ak](BH)John; you shall be called (BI)Cephas” (which is translated [al](BJ)Peter).

43 (BK)The next day He [am]decided to go to (BL)Galilee, and He *found (BM)Philip. And Jesus *said to him, (BN)Follow Me.” 44 Now (BO)Philip was from (BP)Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 (BQ)Philip *found (BR)Nathanael and *said to him, “We have found Him of whom (BS)Moses wrote in the Law, and (BT)the prophets also wrote: Jesus (BU)the son of Joseph, from (BV)Nazareth!” 46 Nathanael said to him, “(BW)Can anything good be from Nazareth?” (BX)Philip *said to him, “Come and see.” 47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and *said of him, “Here is truly an (BY)Israelite, in whom there is no deceit!” 48 Nathanael *said to Him, “How do You know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before (BZ)Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” 49 Nathanael answered Him, “(CA)Rabbi, You are (CB)the Son of God; You are the (CC)King of Israel!” 50 Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” 51 And He *said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see (CD)heaven opened and (CE)the angels of God ascending and descending on (CF)the Son of Man.”

In the beginning was the Word,(A) and the Word was with God,(B) and the Word was God.(C) He was with God in the beginning.(D) Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.(E) In him was life,(F) and that life was the light(G) of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness,(H) and the darkness has not overcome[a] it.(I)

There was a man sent from God whose name was John.(J) He came as a witness to testify(K) concerning that light, so that through him all might believe.(L) He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.

The true light(M) that gives light to everyone(N) was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him,(O) the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.(P) 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed(Q) in his name,(R) he gave the right to become children of God(S) 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.(T)

14 The Word became flesh(U) and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory,(V) the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace(W) and truth.(X)

15 (John testified(Y) concerning him. He cried out, saying, “This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’”)(Z) 16 Out of his fullness(AA) we have all received grace(AB) in place of grace already given. 17 For the law was given through Moses;(AC) grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.(AD) 18 No one has ever seen God,(AE) but the one and only Son, who is himself God and[b](AF) is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.

John the Baptist Denies Being the Messiah

19 Now this was John’s(AG) testimony when the Jewish leaders[c](AH) in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. 20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, “I am not the Messiah.”(AI)

21 They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?”(AJ)

He said, “I am not.”

“Are you the Prophet?”(AK)

He answered, “No.”

22 Finally they said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”

23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness,(AL) ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’”[d](AM)

24 Now the Pharisees who had been sent 25 questioned him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”

26 “I baptize with[e] water,”(AN) John replied, “but among you stands one you do not know. 27 He is the one who comes after me,(AO) the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.”(AP)

28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan,(AQ) where John was baptizing.

John Testifies About Jesus

29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God,(AR) who takes away the sin of the world!(AS) 30 This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’(AT) 31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.”

32 Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him.(AU) 33 And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water(AV) told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’(AW) 34 I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.”[f](AX)

John’s Disciples Follow Jesus(AY)

35 The next day John(AZ) was there again with two of his disciples. 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”(BA)

37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. 38 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?”

They said, “Rabbi”(BB) (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”

39 “Come,” he replied, “and you will see.”

So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon.

40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. 41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ).(BC) 42 And he brought him to Jesus.

Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called(BD) Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter[g]).(BE)

Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael

43 The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip,(BF) he said to him, “Follow me.”(BG)

44 Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida.(BH) 45 Philip found Nathanael(BI) and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law,(BJ) and about whom the prophets also wrote(BK)—Jesus of Nazareth,(BL) the son of Joseph.”(BM)

46 “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?”(BN) Nathanael asked.

“Come and see,” said Philip.

47 When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here truly is an Israelite(BO) in whom there is no deceit.”(BP)

48 “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked.

Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.”

49 Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi,(BQ) you are the Son of God;(BR) you are the king of Israel.”(BS)

50 Jesus said, “You believe[h] because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.” 51 He then added, “Very truly I tell you,[i] you[j] will see ‘heaven open,(BT) and the angels of God ascending and descending(BU) on’[k] the Son of Man.”(BV)
