The Remnant of Israel

⁸ On that day the Lord will shield^(A) those who live in Jerusalem, so that the feeblest^(B) among them will be like David, and the house of David will be like God,^(C) like the angel of the Lord going before^(D) them. ⁹ On that day I will set out to destroy all the nations^(E) that attack Jerusalem.^(F)

Mourning for the One They Pierced

¹⁰ “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit^[a](G) of grace and supplication.^(H) They will look on^[b] me, the one they have pierced,^(I) and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child,^(J) and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son.^(K)

⁷ I will proclaim the Lord’s decree:

⁵ She gave birth to a son, a male child, who “will rule all the nations with an iron scepter.”^[a](A) And her child was snatched up^(B) to God and to his throne. ⁶ The woman fled into the wilderness to a place prepared for her by God, where she might be taken care of for 1,260 days.^(C)

⁷ Then war broke out in heaven. Michael^(D) and his angels fought against the dragon,^(E) and the dragon and his angels^(F) fought back. ⁸ But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. ⁹ The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent^(G) called the devil,^(H) or Satan,^(I) who leads the whole world astray.^(J) He was hurled to the earth,^(K) and his angels with him.

¹⁰ Then I heard a loud voice in heaven^(L) say:

¹⁵ Coming out of his mouth is a sharp sword^(A) with which to strike down^(B) the nations. “He will rule them with an iron scepter.”^[a](C) He treads the winepress^(D) of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty.

The Heavenly Warrior Defeats the Beast

¹¹ I saw heaven standing open^(A) and there before me was a white horse, whose rider^(B) is called Faithful and True.^(C) With justice he judges and wages war.^{(D) 12} His eyes are like blazing fire,^(E) and on his head are many crowns.^(F) He has a name written on him^(G) that no one knows but he himself.^{(H) 13} He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood,^(I) and his name is the Word of God.^{(J) 14} The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen,^(K) white^(L) and clean. ¹⁵ Coming out of his mouth is a sharp sword^(M) with which to strike down^(N) the nations. “He will rule them with an iron scepter.”^[a](O) He treads the winepress^(P) of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. ¹⁶ On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written:^(Q)

²⁰ For it was the Lord himself who hardened their hearts^(A) to wage war against Israel, so that he might destroy them totally, exterminating them without mercy, as the Lord had commanded Moses.^(B)
