Isaiah 8:11-18

New American Standard Bible

¹¹For so the Lord spoke to me ^[a]with ^(A)mighty power and instructed me ^(B)not to walk in the way of this people, saying,

¹²“You are not to say, ‘It is a ^(C)conspiracy!’
Regarding everything that this people call a conspiracy,
And ^(D)you are not to fear ^[b]what they fear or be in dread of it.
¹³It is the ^(E)Lord of armies ^(F)whom you are to regard as holy.
And He shall be your fear,
And He shall be your dread.
¹⁴Then He will become a ^(G)sanctuary;
But to both houses of Israel, He will be a ^(H)stone of stumbling and a rock ^[c]of offense,
And a snare and a ^(I)trap for the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
¹⁵Many ^(J)will stumble over them,
Then they will fall and be broken;
They will be snared and caught.”

¹⁶^(K)Bind up the testimony, ^(L)seal the ^[d]Law among ^(M)my disciples. ¹⁷And I will ^(N)wait for the Lord ^(O)who is hiding His face from the house of Jacob; I will wait eagerly for Him. ¹⁸^(P)Behold, I and the children whom the Lord has given me are for ^(Q)signs and wonders in Israel from the Lord of armies, who ^(R)dwells on Mount Zion.

A Call to Trust the Lord

¹¹The Lord has given me a strong warning not to think like everyone else does. He said,

¹²“Don’t call everything a conspiracy, like they do,
    and don’t live in dread of what frightens them.
¹³Make the Lord of Heaven’s Armies holy in your life.
    He is the one you should fear.
He is the one who should make you tremble.
¹⁴    He will keep you safe.
But to Israel and Judah
    he will be a stone that makes people stumble,
    a rock that makes them fall.
And for the people of Jerusalem
    he will be a trap and a snare.
¹⁵Many will stumble and fall,
    never to rise again.
    They will be snared and captured.”

¹⁶Preserve the teaching of God;
    entrust his instructions to those who follow me.
¹⁷I will wait for the Lord,
    who has turned away from the descendants of Jacob.
    I will put my hope in him.

¹⁸I and the children the Lord has given me serve as signs and warnings to Israel from the Lord of Heaven’s Armies who dwells in his Temple on Mount Zion.

¹²“Do not call conspiracy^(C)
    everything this people calls a conspiracy;
do not fear what they fear,^(D)
    and do not dread it.^(E)
¹³The Lord Almighty is the one you are to regard as holy,^(F)
    he is the one you are to fear,^(G)
    he is the one you are to dread.^(H)
¹⁴He will be a holy place;^(I)
    for both Israel and Judah he will be
a stone^(J) that causes people to stumble^(K)
    and a rock that makes them fall.^(L)
And for the people of Jerusalem he will be
    a trap and a snare.^(M)

    they will fall and be broken,

¹⁶Bind up this testimony of warning^(O)
and seal^(P) up God’s instruction among my disciples.
¹⁷I will wait^(Q) for the Lord,

I will put my trust in him.^(S)

¹⁸Here am I, and the children the Lord has given me.^(T) We are signs^(U) and symbols^(V) in Israel from the Lord Almighty, who dwells on Mount Zion.^(W)
