God’s Ancient Mercies Recalled

I will make mention of the (A)mercies of the Lord, and the praises of the Lord,
According to all that the Lord has granted us,
And the great (B)goodness toward the house of Israel,
Which He has granted them according to His (C)compassion
And according to the abundance of His mercies.
For He said, “Certainly they are (D)My people,
Sons who will not deal falsely.”
So He became their (E)Savior.
In all their distress [a](F)He was distressed,
And the (G)angel of His presence saved them;
In His (H)love and in His mercy He (I)redeemed them,
And He (J)lifted them and carried them all the days of old.
10 But they (K)rebelled
And grieved His (L)Holy Spirit;
Therefore He turned Himself to become their enemy,
He fought against them.
11 Then (M)His people remembered the days of old, of Moses.
Where is (N)He who brought them up out of the sea with the [b]shepherds of His flock?
Where is He who (O)put His Holy Spirit in the midst of [c]them,
12 Who caused His (P)glorious arm to go at the right hand of Moses,
Who (Q)divided the waters before them to make for Himself an everlasting name,
13 Who led them through the depths?
Like the horse in the wilderness, they did not (R)stumble;
14 Like the cattle which go down into the valley,
The Spirit of the (S)Lord gave [d]them rest.
So You (T)led Your people,
To make for Yourself a glorious name.

You Are Our Father

15 (U)Look down from heaven and see from Your holy and glorious (V)lofty habitation;
Where are Your (W)zeal and Your mighty deeds?
The (X)stirrings of Your heart and Your compassion are restrained toward me.
16 For You are our (Y)Father, though (Z)Abraham does not know us
And Israel does not recognize us.
You, Lord, are our Father,
Our (AA)Redeemer from ancient times is Your name.
17 Why, Lord, do You (AB)cause us to stray from Your ways
And (AC)harden our heart from fearing You?
(AD)Return for the sake of Your servants, the tribes of Your heritage.
18 Your holy people possessed Your sanctuary for a little while,
Our adversaries have (AE)trampled it down.
19 We have become like those over whom You have never ruled,
Like those who were not called by Your name.

Prayer for Mercy and Help

64 [e]Oh, that You would tear open the heavens and (AF)come down,
That the mountains would (AG)quake at Your presence—
[f]As fire kindles brushwood, as fire causes water to boil—
To make Your name known to Your adversaries,
That the (AH)nations may tremble at Your presence!
When You did (AI)awesome things which we did not expect,
You came down, the mountains quaked at Your presence.
For from days of old (AJ)they have not heard or perceived by ear,
Nor has the eye seen a God besides You,
Who acts in behalf of one who (AK)waits for Him.
You (AL)meet him who rejoices in (AM)doing righteousness,
Who (AN)remembers You in Your ways.
Behold, (AO)You were angry, for we sinned,
We continued in [g]our sins for a long time;
Yet shall we be saved?
For all of us have become like one who is (AP)unclean,
And all our (AQ)righteous deeds are like a filthy garment;
And all of us (AR)wither like a leaf,
And our (AS)wrongdoings, like the wind, take us away.
There is (AT)no one who calls on Your name,
Who stirs himself to take hold of You;
For You have (AU)hidden Your face from us
And have [h]surrendered us to the power of our wrongdoings.

But now, Lord, (AV)You are our Father;
We are the (AW)clay, and You our potter,
And all of us are the (AX)work of Your hand.
Do not be (AY)angry beyond measure, Lord,
(AZ)Nor remember wrongdoing forever.
Behold, please look, all of us are (BA)Your people.
10 Your (BB)holy cities have become a (BC)wilderness,
Zion has become a wilderness,
Jerusalem a desolation.
11 Our holy and beautiful (BD)house,
Where our fathers praised You,
Has been burned by fire;
And (BE)all our precious things have become a ruin.
12 Will You (BF)restrain Yourself at these things, Lord?
Will You keep silent and afflict us beyond measure?

Praise and Prayer

I will tell of the kindnesses(A) of the Lord,
    the deeds for which he is to be praised,
    according to all the Lord has done for us—
yes, the many good things(B)
    he has done for Israel,
    according to his compassion(C) and many kindnesses.
He said, “Surely they are my people,(D)
    children who will be true to me”;
    and so he became their Savior.(E)
In all their distress he too was distressed,
    and the angel(F) of his presence(G) saved them.[a]
In his love and mercy he redeemed(H) them;
    he lifted them up and carried(I) them
    all the days of old.(J)
10 Yet they rebelled(K)
    and grieved his Holy Spirit.(L)
So he turned and became their enemy(M)
    and he himself fought(N) against them.

11 Then his people recalled[b] the days of old,
    the days of Moses and his people—
where is he who brought them through the sea,(O)
    with the shepherd of his flock?(P)
Where is he who set
    his Holy Spirit(Q) among them,
12 who sent his glorious arm(R) of power
    to be at Moses’ right hand,
who divided the waters(S) before them,
    to gain for himself everlasting renown,(T)
13 who led(U) them through the depths?(V)
Like a horse in open country,
    they did not stumble;(W)
14 like cattle that go down to the plain,
    they were given rest(X) by the Spirit of the Lord.
This is how you guided your people
    to make for yourself a glorious name.

15 Look down from heaven(Y) and see,
    from your lofty throne,(Z) holy and glorious.
Where are your zeal(AA) and your might?
    Your tenderness and compassion(AB) are withheld(AC) from us.
16 But you are our Father,(AD)
    though Abraham does not know us
    or Israel acknowledge(AE) us;
you, Lord, are our Father,
    our Redeemer(AF) from of old is your name.
17 Why, Lord, do you make us wander(AG) from your ways
    and harden our hearts(AH) so we do not revere(AI) you?
Return(AJ) for the sake of your servants,
    the tribes that are your inheritance.(AK)
18 For a little while(AL) your people possessed your holy place,
    but now our enemies have trampled(AM) down your sanctuary.(AN)
19 We are yours from of old;
    but you have not ruled over them,
    they have not been called[c] by your name.(AO)

64 [d]Oh, that you would rend the heavens(AP) and come down,(AQ)
    that the mountains(AR) would tremble before you!
As when fire sets twigs ablaze
    and causes water to boil,
come down to make your name(AS) known to your enemies
    and cause the nations to quake(AT) before you!
For when you did awesome(AU) things that we did not expect,
    you came down, and the mountains trembled(AV) before you.
Since ancient times no one has heard,
    no ear has perceived,
no eye has seen any God besides you,(AW)
    who acts on behalf of those who wait for him.(AX)
You come to the help of those who gladly do right,(AY)
    who remember your ways.
But when we continued to sin against them,
    you were angry.(AZ)
    How then can we be saved?
All of us have become like one who is unclean,(BA)
    and all our righteous(BB) acts are like filthy rags;
we all shrivel up like a leaf,(BC)
    and like the wind our sins sweep us away.(BD)
No one(BE) calls on your name(BF)
    or strives to lay hold of you;
for you have hidden(BG) your face from us
    and have given us over(BH) to[e] our sins.

Yet you, Lord, are our Father.(BI)
    We are the clay, you are the potter;(BJ)
    we are all the work of your hand.(BK)
Do not be angry(BL) beyond measure, Lord;
    do not remember our sins(BM) forever.
Oh, look on us, we pray,
    for we are all your people.(BN)
10 Your sacred cities(BO) have become a wasteland;
    even Zion is a wasteland, Jerusalem a desolation.(BP)
11 Our holy and glorious temple,(BQ) where our ancestors praised you,
    has been burned with fire,
    and all that we treasured(BR) lies in ruins.
12 After all this, Lord, will you hold yourself back?(BS)
    Will you keep silent(BT) and punish us beyond measure?
