The Lord's Comfort for Zion

51 (A)“Listen to me, you who pursue righteousness,
    you who seek the Lord:
look to the rock from which you were hewn,
    and to the quarry from which you were dug.
Look to Abraham your father
    and to Sarah who bore you;
for (B)he was but one when I called him,
    that I might bless him and multiply him.
For the Lord (C)comforts Zion;
    he comforts all her waste places
and makes her wilderness like (D)Eden,
    her desert like (E)the garden of the Lord;
(F)joy and gladness will be found in her,
    thanksgiving and the voice of song.

(G)“Give attention to me, my people,
    and give ear to me, my nation;
(H)for a law[a] will go out from me,
    and I will set my justice for a light to the peoples.
(I)My righteousness draws near,
    my salvation has gone out,
    and my arms will judge the peoples;
(J)the coastlands hope for me,
    and for my arm they wait.
(K)Lift up your eyes to the heavens,
    and look at the earth beneath;
(L)for the heavens vanish like smoke,
    the earth will wear out like a garment,
    and they who dwell in it will die in like manner;[b]
(M)but my salvation will be forever,
    and my righteousness will never be dismayed.

(N)“Listen to me, you who know righteousness,
    the people (O)in whose heart is my law;
(P)fear not the reproach of man,
    nor be dismayed at their revilings.
(Q)For the moth will eat them up like a garment,
    and the worm will eat them like wool,
(R)but my righteousness will be forever,
    and my salvation to all generations.”

(S)Awake, awake, (T)put on strength,
    O (U)arm of the Lord;
awake, (V)as in days of old,
    the generations of long ago.
Was it not you who cut (W)Rahab in pieces,
    who pierced (X)the dragon?
10 (Y)Was it not you who dried up the sea,
    the waters of the great deep,
who made the depths of the sea a way
    for the redeemed to pass over?
11 (Z)And the ransomed of the Lord shall return
    and come to Zion with singing;
everlasting joy shall be upon their heads;
    they shall obtain gladness and joy,
    and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

12 “I, I am he (AA)who comforts you;
    who are you that you are afraid of (AB)man who dies,
    of the son of man who is made (AC)like grass,
13 and have forgotten the Lord, your Maker,
    (AD)who stretched out the heavens
    and (AE)laid the foundations of the earth,
and you fear continually all the day
    because of the wrath of (AF)the oppressor,
when he sets himself to destroy?
    And where is the wrath of (AG)the oppressor?
14 (AH)He who is bowed down shall speedily be released;
    he shall not die and go down (AI)to the pit,
    neither shall his bread be lacking.
15 I am the Lord your God,
    (AJ)who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar—
    the Lord of hosts is his name.
16 (AK)And I have put my words in your mouth
    (AL)and covered you in the shadow of my hand,
(AM)establishing[c] the heavens
    and (AN)laying the foundations of the earth,
    and saying to Zion, ‘You are my people.’”

17 (AO)Wake yourself, wake yourself,
    stand up, O Jerusalem,
(AP)you who have drunk from the hand of the Lord
    the cup of his wrath,
who have drunk to the dregs
    the bowl, (AQ)the cup of staggering.
18 (AR)There is none to guide her
    among all the sons she has borne;
there is none to take her by the hand
    among all the sons she has brought up.
19 (AS)These two things have happened to you—
    who will console you?—
devastation and destruction, famine and sword;
    who will comfort you?[d]
20 (AT)Your sons have fainted;
    they lie at the head of every street
    like an (AU)antelope (AV)in a net;
they are full of the wrath of the Lord,
    the rebuke of your God.

21 (AW)Therefore hear this, you who are afflicted,
    who are drunk, but not with wine:
22 Thus says your Lord, the Lord,
    your God (AX)who pleads the cause of his people:
“Behold, I have taken from your hand (AY)the cup of staggering;
the bowl of my wrath you shall drink no more;
23 (AZ)and I will put it into the hand of your tormentors,
    (BA)who have said to you,
    ‘Bow down, that we may pass over’;
and (BB)you have made your back like the ground
    and like the street for them to pass over.”

The Lord's Coming Salvation

52 (BC)Awake, awake,
    put on your strength, O Zion;
(BD)put on your beautiful garments,
    O Jerusalem, (BE)the holy city;
(BF)for there shall no more come into you
    the uncircumcised and the unclean.
(BG)Shake yourself from the dust and arise;
    be seated, O Jerusalem;
(BH)loose the bonds from your neck,
    O captive daughter of Zion.

For thus says the Lord: (BI)“You were sold for nothing, and (BJ)you shall be redeemed without money.” For thus says the Lord God: (BK)“My people went down at the first into Egypt to sojourn there, and the Assyrian oppressed them for nothing.[e] Now therefore what have I here,” declares the Lord, “seeing that my people are taken away for nothing? Their rulers wail,” declares the Lord, “and (BL)continually all the day my name is despised. Therefore my people shall know my name. (BM)Therefore in that day they shall know that it is I who speak; here I am.”

(BN)How beautiful upon the mountains
    are the feet of him who brings good news,
who publishes peace, (BO)who brings good news of happiness,
    who publishes salvation,
    who says to Zion, “Your God reigns.”
The voice of (BP)your watchmen—they lift up their voice;
    together they sing for joy;
(BQ)for eye to eye they see
    the return of the Lord to Zion.
(BR)Break forth together into singing,
    (BS)you waste places of Jerusalem,
for (BT)the Lord has comforted his people;
    he has redeemed Jerusalem.
10 (BU)The Lord has bared his holy arm
    before the eyes of all the nations,
(BV)and all the ends of the earth shall see
    the salvation of our God.

11 (BW)Depart, depart, go out from there;
    touch no unclean thing;
go out from the midst of her; purify yourselves,
    (BX)you who bear the vessels of the Lord.
12 For you shall not (BY)go out in haste,
    and you shall not go in flight,
(BZ)for the Lord will go before you,
    (CA)and the God of Israel will be your rear guard.

He Was Pierced for Our Transgressions

13 Behold, (CB)my servant shall act wisely;[f]
    he shall be high and lifted up,
    and shall be exalted.
14 As many were astonished at you—
    (CC)his appearance was so marred, beyond human semblance,
    and his form beyond that of the children of mankind—
15 so (CD)shall he sprinkle[g] many nations.
    (CE)Kings shall shut their mouths because of him,
(CF)for that which has not been told them they see,
    and that which they have not heard they understand.
53 (CG)Who has believed what he has heard from us?[h]
    And to whom has (CH)the arm of the Lord been revealed?
For he grew up before him like a young plant,
    (CI)and like a root out of dry ground;
(CJ)he had no form or majesty that we should look at him,
    and no beauty that we should desire him.
(CK)He was despised and rejected[i] by men,
    a man of sorrows[j] and acquainted with[k] grief;[l]
and as one from whom men hide their faces[m]
    he was despised, and (CL)we esteemed him not.

(CM)Surely he has borne our griefs
    and carried our sorrows;
yet we esteemed him stricken,
    (CN)smitten by God, and afflicted.
(CO)But he was pierced for our transgressions;
    he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
    (CP)and with his wounds we are healed.
(CQ)All we like sheep have gone astray;
    we have turned—every one—to his own way;
(CR)and the Lord has laid on him
    the iniquity of us all.

He was oppressed, and he was afflicted,
    (CS)yet he opened not his mouth;
(CT)like a (CU)lamb that is led to the slaughter,
    and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent,
    so he opened not his mouth.
By oppression and judgment he was taken away;
    and as for his generation, (CV)who considered
that he was cut off out of the land of the living,
    stricken for the transgression of my people?
And they made his grave with the wicked
    (CW)and with a rich man in his death,
although (CX)he had done no violence,
    and there was no deceit in his mouth.

10 Yet (CY)it was the will of the Lord to crush him;
    he has put him to grief;[n]
(CZ)when his soul makes[o] an offering for guilt,
    he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days;
(DA)the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
11 Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see[p] and be satisfied;
by his knowledge shall (DB)the righteous one, my servant,
    (DC)make many to be accounted righteous,
    (DD)and he shall bear their iniquities.
12 (DE)Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many,[q]
    (DF)and he shall divide the spoil with the strong,[r]
because he poured out his soul to death
    and was numbered with the transgressors;
(DG)yet he bore the sin of many,
    and makes intercession for the transgressors.

The Eternal Covenant of Peace

54 (DH)“Sing, O barren one, who did not bear;
    break forth into singing and cry aloud,
    you who have not been in labor!
For the children of (DI)the desolate one (DJ)will be more
    than the children of her who is married,” says the Lord.
(DK)“Enlarge the place of your tent,
    and let the curtains of your habitations be stretched out;
do not hold back; lengthen your cords
    and strengthen your stakes.
(DL)For you will spread abroad to the right and to the left,
    and your offspring will possess the nations
    and will people the desolate cities.

“Fear not, (DM)for you will not be ashamed;
    be not confounded, for you will not be disgraced;
for you will forget the shame of your youth,
    and the reproach of your widowhood you will remember no more.
(DN)For your Maker is your husband,
    the Lord of hosts is his name;
(DO)and the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer,
    (DP)the God of the whole earth he is called.
(DQ)For the Lord has called you
    like a wife deserted and grieved in spirit,
like a wife of youth when she is cast off,
    says your God.
(DR)For a brief moment I deserted you,
    but with great compassion I will gather you.
(DS)In overflowing anger for a moment
    I hid my face from you,
(DT)but with everlasting love I will have compassion on you,”
    says the Lord, your Redeemer.

“This is like (DU)the days of Noah[s] to me:
    as I swore that the waters of Noah
    should no more go over the earth,
so I have sworn that I will not be angry with you,
    and will not rebuke you.
10 For the mountains may depart
    and the hills be removed,
but my steadfast love shall not depart from you,
    and (DV)my covenant of peace shall not be removed,”
    says the Lord, who has compassion on you.

11 (DW)“O afflicted one, storm-tossed and not comforted,
    behold, (DX)I will set your stones in antimony,
    (DY)and lay your foundations with sapphires.[t]
12 I will make your pinnacles of agate,[u]
    your gates of carbuncles,[v]
    and all your wall of precious stones.
13 (DZ)All your children (EA)shall be taught by the Lord,
    (EB)and great shall be the peace of your children.
14 In righteousness you shall be established;
    you shall be far from oppression, for you shall not fear;
    and from terror, for it shall not come near you.
15 (EC)If anyone stirs up strife,
    it is not from me;
whoever stirs up strife with you
    shall fall because of you.
16 Behold, I have created the smith
    who blows the fire of coals
    and produces a weapon for its purpose.
I have also created the ravager to destroy;
17     no weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed,
    and you shall refute every tongue that rises against you in judgment.
This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord
    (ED)and their vindication[w] from me, declares the Lord.”

The Compassion of the Lord

55 (EE)“Come, everyone who thirsts,
    come to the waters;
and he who has no money,
    (EF)come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
    without money and without price.
(EG)Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread,
    and your labor for that which does not satisfy?
Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good,
    and delight yourselves in rich food.
Incline your ear, and come to me;
    (EH)hear, that your soul may live;
(EI)and I will make with you an everlasting covenant,
    (EJ)my steadfast, sure love for (EK)David.
(EL)Behold, I made him a witness to the peoples,
    (EM)a leader and commander for the peoples.
(EN)Behold, you shall call a nation that you do not know,
    and (EO)a nation that did not know you shall run to you,
because of the Lord your God, and of the Holy One of Israel,
    (EP)for he has glorified you.

(EQ)“Seek the Lord while he may be found;
    call upon him while he is near;
let the wicked forsake his way,
    and the unrighteous man his thoughts;
let him return to the Lord, that he may have compassion on him,
    and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
    neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.
(ER)For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
    so are my ways higher than your ways
    and my thoughts than your thoughts.

10 (ES)“For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven
    and do not return there but water the earth,
making it bring forth and sprout,
    (ET)giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,
11 so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;
    it shall not return to me empty,
but (EU)it shall accomplish that which I purpose,
    and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.

12 (EV)“For you shall go out in joy
    and be led forth in peace;
(EW)the mountains and the hills before you
    shall break forth into singing,
    and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.
13 (EX)Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress;
    instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle;
and it shall make a name for the Lord,
    an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.”

Everlasting Salvation for Zion

51 “Listen(A) to me, you who pursue righteousness(B)
    and who seek(C) the Lord:
Look to the rock(D) from which you were cut
    and to the quarry from which you were hewn;
look to Abraham,(E) your father,
    and to Sarah, who gave you birth.
When I called him he was only one man,
    and I blessed him and made him many.(F)
The Lord will surely comfort(G) Zion(H)
    and will look with compassion on all her ruins;(I)
he will make her deserts like Eden,(J)
    her wastelands(K) like the garden of the Lord.
Joy and gladness(L) will be found in her,
    thanksgiving(M) and the sound of singing.

“Listen to me, my people;(N)
    hear me,(O) my nation:
Instruction(P) will go out from me;
    my justice(Q) will become a light to the nations.(R)
My righteousness draws near speedily,
    my salvation(S) is on the way,(T)
    and my arm(U) will bring justice to the nations.
The islands(V) will look to me
    and wait in hope(W) for my arm.
Lift up your eyes to the heavens,
    look at the earth beneath;
the heavens will vanish like smoke,(X)
    the earth will wear out like a garment(Y)
    and its inhabitants die like flies.
But my salvation(Z) will last forever,(AA)
    my righteousness will never fail.(AB)

“Hear me, you who know what is right,(AC)
    you people who have taken my instruction to heart:(AD)
Do not fear the reproach of mere mortals
    or be terrified by their insults.(AE)
For the moth will eat them up like a garment;(AF)
    the worm(AG) will devour them like wool.
But my righteousness will last forever,(AH)
    my salvation through all generations.”

Awake, awake,(AI) arm(AJ) of the Lord,
    clothe yourself with strength!(AK)
Awake, as in days gone by,
    as in generations of old.(AL)
Was it not you who cut Rahab(AM) to pieces,
    who pierced that monster(AN) through?
10 Was it not you who dried up the sea,(AO)
    the waters of the great deep,(AP)
who made a road in the depths of the sea(AQ)
    so that the redeemed(AR) might cross over?
11 Those the Lord has rescued(AS) will return.
    They will enter Zion with singing;(AT)
    everlasting joy will crown their heads.
Gladness and joy(AU) will overtake them,
    and sorrow and sighing will flee away.(AV)

12 “I, even I, am he who comforts(AW) you.
    Who are you that you fear(AX) mere mortals,(AY)
    human beings who are but grass,(AZ)
13 that you forget(BA) the Lord your Maker,(BB)
    who stretches out the heavens(BC)
    and who lays the foundations of the earth,
that you live in constant terror(BD) every day
    because of the wrath of the oppressor,
    who is bent on destruction?
For where is the wrath of the oppressor?(BE)
14     The cowering prisoners will soon be set free;(BF)
they will not die in their dungeon,
    nor will they lack bread.(BG)
15 For I am the Lord your God,
    who stirs up the sea(BH) so that its waves roar(BI)
    the Lord Almighty(BJ) is his name.
16 I have put my words in your mouth(BK)
    and covered you with the shadow of my hand(BL)
I who set the heavens in place,
    who laid the foundations of the earth,(BM)
    and who say to Zion, ‘You are my people.(BN)’”

The Cup of the Lord’s Wrath

17 Awake, awake!(BO)
    Rise up, Jerusalem,
you who have drunk from the hand of the Lord
    the cup(BP) of his wrath,(BQ)
you who have drained to its dregs(BR)
    the goblet that makes people stagger.(BS)
18 Among all the children(BT) she bore
    there was none to guide her;(BU)
among all the children she reared
    there was none to take her by the hand.(BV)
19 These double calamities(BW) have come upon you—
    who can comfort you?(BX)
ruin and destruction,(BY) famine(BZ) and sword(CA)
    who can[a] console you?
20 Your children have fainted;
    they lie at every street corner,(CB)
    like antelope caught in a net.(CC)
They are filled with the wrath(CD) of the Lord,
    with the rebuke(CE) of your God.

21 Therefore hear this, you afflicted(CF) one,
    made drunk,(CG) but not with wine.
22 This is what your Sovereign Lord says,
    your God, who defends(CH) his people:
“See, I have taken out of your hand
    the cup(CI) that made you stagger;
from that cup, the goblet of my wrath,
    you will never drink again.
23 I will put it into the hands of your tormentors,(CJ)
    who said to you,
    ‘Fall prostrate(CK) that we may walk(CL) on you.’
And you made your back like the ground,
    like a street to be walked on.”(CM)

52 Awake, awake,(CN) Zion,
    clothe yourself with strength!(CO)
Put on your garments of splendor,(CP)
    Jerusalem, the holy city.(CQ)
The uncircumcised(CR) and defiled(CS)
    will not enter you again.(CT)
Shake off your dust;(CU)
    rise up,(CV) sit enthroned, Jerusalem.
Free yourself from the chains on your neck,(CW)
    Daughter Zion,(CX) now a captive.

For this is what the Lord says:

“You were sold for nothing,(CY)
    and without money(CZ) you will be redeemed.(DA)

For this is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“At first my people went down to Egypt(DB) to live;
    lately, Assyria(DC) has oppressed them.

“And now what do I have here?” declares the Lord.

“For my people have been taken away for nothing,
    and those who rule them mock,[b]
declares the Lord.
“And all day long
    my name is constantly blasphemed.(DD)
Therefore my people will know(DE) my name;(DF)
    therefore in that day(DG) they will know
that it is I who foretold(DH) it.
    Yes, it is I.”

How beautiful on the mountains(DI)
    are the feet of those who bring good news,(DJ)
who proclaim peace,(DK)
    who bring good tidings,
    who proclaim salvation,
who say to Zion,
    “Your God reigns!”(DL)
Listen! Your watchmen(DM) lift up their voices;(DN)
    together they shout for joy.(DO)
When the Lord returns(DP) to Zion,(DQ)
    they will see it with their own eyes.
Burst into songs of joy(DR) together,
    you ruins(DS) of Jerusalem,
for the Lord has comforted(DT) his people,
    he has redeemed Jerusalem.(DU)
10 The Lord will lay bare his holy arm(DV)
    in the sight of all the nations,(DW)
and all the ends of the earth(DX) will see
    the salvation(DY) of our God.

11 Depart,(DZ) depart, go out from there!
    Touch no unclean thing!(EA)
Come out from it and be pure,(EB)
    you who carry the articles(EC) of the Lord’s house.
12 But you will not leave in haste(ED)
    or go in flight;
for the Lord will go before you,(EE)
    the God of Israel will be your rear guard.(EF)

The Suffering and Glory of the Servant

13 See, my servant(EG) will act wisely[c];
    he will be raised and lifted up and highly exalted.(EH)
14 Just as there were many who were appalled(EI) at him[d]
    his appearance was so disfigured(EJ) beyond that of any human being
    and his form marred beyond human likeness(EK)
15 so he will sprinkle(EL) many nations,[e]
    and kings(EM) will shut their mouths(EN) because of him.
For what they were not told, they will see,
    and what they have not heard, they will understand.(EO)

53 Who has believed our message(EP)
    and to whom has the arm(EQ) of the Lord been revealed?(ER)
He grew up before him like a tender shoot,(ES)
    and like a root(ET) out of dry ground.
He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him,
    nothing in his appearance(EU) that we should desire him.
He was despised and rejected by mankind,
    a man of suffering,(EV) and familiar with pain.(EW)
Like one from whom people hide(EX) their faces
    he was despised,(EY) and we held him in low esteem.

Surely he took up our pain
    and bore our suffering,(EZ)
yet we considered him punished by God,(FA)
    stricken by him, and afflicted.(FB)
But he was pierced(FC) for our transgressions,(FD)
    he was crushed(FE) for our iniquities;
the punishment(FF) that brought us peace(FG) was on him,
    and by his wounds(FH) we are healed.(FI)
We all, like sheep, have gone astray,(FJ)
    each of us has turned to our own way;(FK)
and the Lord has laid on him
    the iniquity(FL) of us all.

He was oppressed(FM) and afflicted,
    yet he did not open his mouth;(FN)
he was led like a lamb(FO) to the slaughter,(FP)
    and as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
    so he did not open his mouth.
By oppression[f] and judgment(FQ) he was taken away.
    Yet who of his generation protested?
For he was cut off from the land of the living;(FR)
    for the transgression(FS) of my people he was punished.[g]
He was assigned a grave with the wicked,(FT)
    and with the rich(FU) in his death,
though he had done no violence,(FV)
    nor was any deceit in his mouth.(FW)

10 Yet it was the Lord’s will(FX) to crush(FY) him and cause him to suffer,(FZ)
    and though the Lord makes[h] his life an offering for sin,(GA)
he will see his offspring(GB) and prolong his days,
    and the will of the Lord will prosper(GC) in his hand.
11 After he has suffered,(GD)
    he will see the light(GE) of life[i] and be satisfied[j];
by his knowledge[k] my righteous servant(GF) will justify(GG) many,
    and he will bear their iniquities.(GH)
12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great,[l](GI)
    and he will divide the spoils(GJ) with the strong,[m]
because he poured out his life unto death,(GK)
    and was numbered with the transgressors.(GL)
For he bore(GM) the sin of many,(GN)
    and made intercession(GO) for the transgressors.

The Future Glory of Zion

54 “Sing, barren woman,(GP)
    you who never bore a child;
burst into song, shout for joy,(GQ)
    you who were never in labor;(GR)
because more are the children(GS) of the desolate(GT) woman
    than of her who has a husband,(GU)
says the Lord.
“Enlarge the place of your tent,(GV)
    stretch your tent curtains wide,
    do not hold back;
lengthen your cords,
    strengthen your stakes.(GW)
For you will spread out to the right and to the left;
    your descendants(GX) will dispossess nations(GY)
    and settle in their desolate(GZ) cities.

“Do not be afraid;(HA) you will not be put to shame.(HB)
    Do not fear disgrace;(HC) you will not be humiliated.
You will forget the shame of your youth(HD)
    and remember no more the reproach(HE) of your widowhood.(HF)
For your Maker(HG) is your husband(HH)
    the Lord Almighty is his name—
the Holy One(HI) of Israel is your Redeemer;(HJ)
    he is called the God of all the earth.(HK)
The Lord will call you back(HL)
    as if you were a wife deserted(HM) and distressed in spirit—
a wife who married young,(HN)
    only to be rejected,” says your God.
“For a brief moment(HO) I abandoned(HP) you,
    but with deep compassion(HQ) I will bring you back.(HR)
In a surge of anger(HS)
    I hid(HT) my face from you for a moment,
but with everlasting kindness(HU)
    I will have compassion(HV) on you,”
    says the Lord your Redeemer.(HW)

“To me this is like the days of Noah,
    when I swore that the waters of Noah would never again cover the earth.(HX)
So now I have sworn(HY) not to be angry(HZ) with you,
    never to rebuke(IA) you again.
10 Though the mountains be shaken(IB)
    and the hills be removed,
yet my unfailing love(IC) for you will not be shaken(ID)
    nor my covenant(IE) of peace(IF) be removed,”
    says the Lord, who has compassion(IG) on you.

11 “Afflicted(IH) city, lashed by storms(II) and not comforted,(IJ)
    I will rebuild you with stones of turquoise,[n](IK)
    your foundations(IL) with lapis lazuli.(IM)
12 I will make your battlements of rubies,
    your gates(IN) of sparkling jewels,
    and all your walls of precious stones.
13 All your children will be taught by the Lord,(IO)
    and great will be their peace.(IP)
14 In righteousness(IQ) you will be established:(IR)
Tyranny(IS) will be far from you;
    you will have nothing to fear.(IT)
Terror(IU) will be far removed;
    it will not come near you.
15 If anyone does attack you, it will not be my doing;
    whoever attacks you will surrender(IV) to you.

16 “See, it is I who created the blacksmith(IW)
    who fans the coals into flame
    and forges a weapon(IX) fit for its work.
And it is I who have created the destroyer(IY) to wreak havoc;
17     no weapon forged against you will prevail,(IZ)
    and you will refute(JA) every tongue that accuses you.
This is the heritage of the servants(JB) of the Lord,
    and this is their vindication(JC) from me,”
declares the Lord.

Invitation to the Thirsty

55 “Come, all you who are thirsty,(JD)
    come to the waters;(JE)
and you who have no money,
    come, buy(JF) and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk(JG)
    without money and without cost.(JH)
Why spend money on what is not bread,
    and your labor on what does not satisfy?(JI)
Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good,(JJ)
    and you will delight in the richest(JK) of fare.
Give ear and come to me;
    listen,(JL) that you may live.(JM)
I will make an everlasting covenant(JN) with you,
    my faithful love(JO) promised to David.(JP)
See, I have made him a witness(JQ) to the peoples,
    a ruler and commander(JR) of the peoples.
Surely you will summon nations(JS) you know not,
    and nations you do not know will come running to you,(JT)
because of the Lord your God,
    the Holy One(JU) of Israel,
    for he has endowed you with splendor.”(JV)

Seek(JW) the Lord while he may be found;(JX)
    call(JY) on him while he is near.
Let the wicked forsake(JZ) their ways
    and the unrighteous their thoughts.(KA)
Let them turn(KB) to the Lord, and he will have mercy(KC) on them,
    and to our God, for he will freely pardon.(KD)

“For my thoughts(KE) are not your thoughts,
    neither are your ways my ways,”(KF)
declares the Lord.
“As the heavens are higher than the earth,(KG)
    so are my ways higher than your ways
    and my thoughts than your thoughts.(KH)
10 As the rain(KI) and the snow
    come down from heaven,
and do not return to it
    without watering the earth
and making it bud and flourish,(KJ)
    so that it yields seed(KK) for the sower and bread for the eater,(KL)
11 so is my word(KM) that goes out from my mouth:
    It will not return to me empty,(KN)
but will accomplish what I desire
    and achieve the purpose(KO) for which I sent it.
12 You will go out in joy(KP)
    and be led forth in peace;(KQ)
the mountains and hills
    will burst into song(KR) before you,
and all the trees(KS) of the field
    will clap their hands.(KT)
13 Instead of the thornbush will grow the juniper,
    and instead of briers(KU) the myrtle(KV) will grow.
This will be for the Lord’s renown,(KW)
    for an everlasting sign,
    that will endure forever.”
