24 Behold, the Lord maketh the earth empty, and maketh it waste, and turneth it upside down, and scattereth abroad the inhabitants thereof.

And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the servant, so with his master; as with the maid, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the lender, so with the borrower; as with the taker of usury, so with the giver of usury to him.

The land shall be utterly emptied, and utterly spoiled: for the Lord hath spoken this word.

The earth mourneth and fadeth away, the world languisheth and fadeth away, the haughty people of the earth do languish.

The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant.

Therefore hath the curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell therein are desolate: therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men left.

The new wine mourneth, the vine languisheth, all the merryhearted do sigh.

The mirth of tabrets ceaseth, the noise of them that rejoice endeth, the joy of the harp ceaseth.

They shall not drink wine with a song; strong drink shall be bitter to them that drink it.

10 The city of confusion is broken down: every house is shut up, that no man may come in.

11 There is a crying for wine in the streets; all joy is darkened, the mirth of the land is gone.

12 In the city is left desolation, and the gate is smitten with destruction.

13 When thus it shall be in the midst of the land among the people, there shall be as the shaking of an olive tree, and as the gleaning grapes when the vintage is done.

14 They shall lift up their voice, they shall sing for the majesty of the Lord, they shall cry aloud from the sea.

15 Wherefore glorify ye the Lord in the fires, even the name of the Lord God of Israel in the isles of the sea.

16 From the uttermost part of the earth have we heard songs, even glory to the righteous. But I said, My leanness, my leanness, woe unto me! the treacherous dealers have dealt treacherously; yea, the treacherous dealers have dealt very treacherously.

17 Fear, and the pit, and the snare, are upon thee, O inhabitant of the earth.

18 And it shall come to pass, that he who fleeth from the noise of the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that cometh up out of the midst of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for the windows from on high are open, and the foundations of the earth do shake.

19 The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the earth is moved exceedingly.

20 The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again.

21 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth.

22 And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days shall they be visited.

23 Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed, when the Lord of hosts shall reign in mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before his ancients gloriously.

Impending Judgment on the Earth

24 Behold, the Lord makes the earth empty and makes it waste,
Distorts its surface
And scatters abroad its inhabitants.
And it shall be:
As with the people, so with the (A)priest;
As with the servant, so with his master;
As with the maid, so with her mistress;
(B)As with the buyer, so with the seller;
As with the lender, so with the borrower;
As with the creditor, so with the debtor.
The land shall be entirely emptied and utterly plundered,
For the Lord has spoken this word.

The earth mourns and fades away,
The world languishes and fades away;
The (C)haughty[a] people of the earth languish.
(D)The earth is also defiled under its inhabitants,
Because they have (E)transgressed the laws,
Changed the ordinance,
Broken the (F)everlasting covenant.
Therefore (G)the curse has devoured the earth,
And those who dwell in it are [b]desolate.
Therefore the inhabitants of the earth are (H)burned,
And few men are left.

(I)The new wine fails, the vine languishes,
All the merry-hearted sigh.
The mirth (J)of the tambourine ceases,
The noise of the jubilant ends,
The joy of the harp ceases.
They shall not drink wine with a song;
Strong drink is bitter to those who drink it.
10 The city of confusion is broken down;
Every house is shut up, so that none may go in.
11 There is a cry for wine in the streets,
All joy is darkened,
The mirth of the land is gone.
12 In the city desolation is left,
And the gate is stricken with destruction.
13 When it shall be thus in the midst of the land among the people,
(K)It shall be like the shaking of an olive tree,
Like the gleaning of grapes when the vintage is done.

14 They shall lift up their voice, they shall sing;
For the majesty of the Lord
They shall cry aloud from the sea.
15 Therefore (L)glorify the Lord in the dawning light,
(M)The name of the Lord God of Israel in the coastlands of the sea.
16 From the ends of the earth we have heard songs:
“Glory to the righteous!”
But I said, [c]“I am ruined, ruined!
Woe to me!
(N)The treacherous dealers have dealt treacherously,
Indeed, the treacherous dealers have dealt very treacherously.”

17 (O)Fear and the pit and the snare
Are upon you, O inhabitant of the earth.
18 And it shall be
That he who flees from the noise of the fear
Shall fall into the pit,
And he who comes up from the midst of the pit
Shall be [d]caught in the snare;
For (P)the windows from on high are open,
And (Q)the foundations of the earth are shaken.

19 (R)The earth is violently broken,
The earth is split open,
The earth is shaken exceedingly.
20 The earth shall (S)reel[e] to and fro like a drunkard,
And shall totter like a hut;
Its transgression shall be heavy upon it,
And it will fall, and not rise again.

21 It shall come to pass in that day
That the Lord will punish on high the host of exalted ones,
And on the earth (T)the kings of the earth.
22 They will be gathered together,
As prisoners are gathered in the [f]pit,
And will be shut up in the prison;
After many days they will be punished.
23 Then the (U)moon will be disgraced
And the sun ashamed;
For the Lord of hosts will (V)reign
On (W)Mount Zion and in Jerusalem
And before His elders, gloriously.

The Earth Will Be Punished

24 The Lord is going to twist the earth out of shape and turn it into a desert. Everyone will be scattered, including ordinary people and priests, slaves and slave owners, buyers and sellers, lenders and borrowers, the rich and the poor. The earth will be stripped bare and left that way. This is what the Lord has promised.

The earth wilts away;
its mighty leaders melt
    to nothing.[a]
The earth is polluted
    because its people
disobeyed the laws of God,
breaking their agreement
    that was to last forever.

The earth is under a curse;
its people are dying out
    because of their sins.
Grapevines have dried up:
    wine is almost gone—
mournful sounds are heard
    instead of joyful shouts.

No one plays tambourines
    or stringed instruments;
all noisy celebrating
    has come to an end.
They no longer sing
as they drink their wine,
    and it tastes sour.

10 Towns are crushed and in chaos;
    houses are locked tight.
11 Happy times have disappeared
    from the earth,
and people shout in the streets,
    “We're out of wine!”
12 Cities are destroyed;
    their gates are torn down.
13 Nations will be stripped bare,
like olive trees or vineyards
    after the harvest season.

Praise the God of Justice

14 People in the west shout;
they joyfully praise
    the majesty of the Lord.
15 And so, everyone in the east
    and those on the islands
should praise the Lord,
    the God of Israel.
16 From all over the world
songs of praise are heard
    for the God of justice.[b]
But I feel awful,
    terribly miserable.
Can anyone be trusted?
    So many are treacherous!

There's No Escape

17 Terror, traps, and pits
    are waiting for everyone.
18 If you are terrified and run,
    you will fall into a pit;
if you crawl out of the pit,
    you will get caught in a trap.

The sky has split apart
    like a window thrown open.
The foundations of the earth
    have been shaken;
19 the earth is shattered,
    ripped to pieces.
20 It staggers and shakes
like a drunkard
    or a hut in a windstorm.
It is burdened down with sin;
the earth will fall,
    never again to get up.

21 On that day the Lord
    will punish the powers
in the heavens[c]
    and the kings of the earth.
22 He will put them in a pit
    and keep them prisoner.
Then later on,
    he will punish them.
23 Both the moon and sun will
    be embarrassed and ashamed.
The Lord All-Powerful will rule
    on Mount Zion in Jerusalem,
where he will show its rulers
    his wonderful glory.

Footnotes

  1. 24.4 its … to nothing: One possible meaning for the difficult Hebrew text.
  2. 24.16 God of justice: Or “people who do right.”
  3. 24.21 the powers in the heavens: In ancient times the stars were thought of as powerful spiritual beings, and sometimes they stood for pagan gods.

City of chaos falls

24 Look! The Lord will devastate the earth and destroy it,
    will twist its face and scatter its inhabitants.
It will be the same for the people and for the priest;
    for the slave and for his master;
    for the female servant and for her mistress;
    for the buyer and for the seller;
    for the lender and for the borrower;
    for the creditor and for the debtor.
The earth will be devastated, totally devastated;
    it will be destroyed, completely destroyed
    because the Lord has said it would be so.

The earth dries up and wilts;
    the world withers and wilts;
    the heavens wither away with the earth.
The earth lies polluted under its inhabitants,
    for they have disobeyed instruction,
    swept aside law,
    and broken the ancient covenant.
Therefore, a curse devours the earth; its inhabitants suffer for their guilt.
Therefore, the earth’s inhabitants dwindle; very few are left.

The wine dries up;
    the vine withers;
    all the merry-hearted groan.
The joyous tambourines have ceased;
    the roar of partiers has stopped;
    the joyous harp has ceased.
No one drinks wine or sings;
    beer is bitter to its drinkers.
10 The town is in chaos, broken;
    every house is shut, without entrance.
11 There is a cry for wine in the streets.
    All joy has reached its dusk;
    happiness is exiled from the earth.
12 Ruin remains in the city,
    and the gate is battered to wreckage.
13 It will be like this in the central part of the land and among the peoples,
    like an olive tree that has been shaken,
    like remains from the grape harvest.

14 They raise their voice;
    they sing with joy;
    from the west they will shout about the Lord’s majesty.
15 Therefore, in the east honor the Lord;
    in the islands of the sea,
    the name of the Lord God of Israel!
16 From the ends of the earth we have heard songs:
    “Glory to the righteous one!”
But I say, “I waste away; I waste away;
    I’m doomed!
    Betrayers betray; treacherously betrayers betray.”

17 Terror, trench, and trap are upon you,
    ruler of the earth!
18 Whoever flees from the sound of terror will fall into the trench;
    whoever climbs from the trench will be caught in the trap.

Heaven’s windows will open, and the earth’s foundations will quake.
19 The earth is shattering, shattering;
    the earth is shaking, shaking;
    the earth is teetering, tottering.
20 The earth trembles like a drunk
    and shudders like a hut;
    its rebellion weighs heavy upon it;
    it will fall, no more to rise.

21 On that day, the Lord will punish the forces of heaven in heaven, and the kings of the earth on earth. 22 They will be gathered together like prisoners in a pit, shut into a prison, and punished after many days. 23 The moon will be diminished, and the sun will fade, since the Lord of heavenly forces will rule on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, glorious before his elders.

The Lord Will Punish the World

24 Look! The Lord will destroy the earth and leave it empty;
    he will ruin the surface of the land and scatter its people.
At that time the same thing will happen to everyone:
    to common people and priests,
    to slaves and masters,
    to women slaves and their women masters,
    to buyers and sellers,
    to those who borrow and those who lend,
    to bankers and those who owe the bank.
The earth will be completely empty.
    The wealth will all be taken,
    because the Lord has commanded it.
The earth will dry up and die;
    the world will grow weak and die;
    the great leaders in this land will become weak.
The people of the earth have ruined it,
    because they do not follow God’s teachings
or obey God’s laws
    or keep their agreement with God that was to last forever.
So a curse will destroy the earth.
    The people of the world are guilty,
so they will be burned up;
    only a few will be left.
The new wine will be bad, and the grapevines will die.
    People who were happy will be sad.
The happy music of the tambourines will end.
    The happy sounds of wild parties will stop.
    The joyful music from the harps will end.
People will no longer sing while they drink their wine.
    The beer will taste bitter to those who drink it.
10 The ruined city will be empty,
    and people will hide behind closed doors.
11 People in the streets will ask for wine,
    but joy will have turned to sadness;
    all the happiness will have left.
12 The city will be left in ruins,
    and its gates will be smashed to pieces.
13 This is what will happen all over the earth
    and to all the nations.
The earth will be like an olive tree after the harvest
    or like the few grapes left on a vine after harvest.

14 The people shout for joy.
    From the west they praise the greatness of the Lord.
15 People in the east, praise the Lord.
    People in the islands of the sea,
    praise the name of the Lord, the God of Israel.
16 We hear songs from every part of the earth
    praising God, the Righteous One.

But I said, “I am dying! I am dying!
    How terrible it will be for me!
Traitors turn against people;
    with their dishonesty, they turn against people.”
17 There are terrors, holes, and traps
    for the people of the earth.
18 Anyone who tries to escape from the sound of terror
    will fall into a hole.
Anyone who climbs out of the hole
    will be caught in a trap.
The clouds in the sky will pour out rain,
    and the foundations of the earth will shake.
19 The earth will be broken up;
    the earth will split open;
    the earth will shake violently.
20 The earth will stumble around like someone who is drunk;
    it will shake like a hut in a storm.
Its sin is like a heavy weight on its back;
    it will fall and never rise again.

21 At that time the Lord will punish
    the powers in the sky above
    and the rulers on earth below.
22 They will be gathered together
    like prisoners thrown into a dungeon;
they will be shut up in prison.
    After much time they will be punished.
23 The moon will be embarrassed,
    and the sun will be ashamed,
because the Lord All-Powerful will rule as king
    on Mount Zion in Jerusalem.
    Jerusalem’s leaders will see his greatness.
