at that time the Lord spoke by Isaiah the son of Amoz, saying, “Go, and loose the sackcloth from your waist and take off your sandals from your feet,” and he did so, walking (A)naked and barefoot.

Then the Lord said, “As my servant Isaiah has walked naked and barefoot for three years (B)as a sign and a portent against Egypt and Cush,[a] so shall the (C)king of Assyria lead away the Egyptian captives and the Cushite exiles, both the young and the old, naked and barefoot, with buttocks uncovered, the nakedness of Egypt. (D)Then they shall be dismayed and ashamed because of Cush their hope and of Egypt their boast. And the inhabitants of (E)this coastland will say in that day, ‘Behold, this is what has happened to those in whom we hoped and (F)to whom we fled for help to be delivered from the king of Assyria! And we, how shall we escape?’”

Fallen, Fallen Is Babylon

21 The (G)oracle concerning the wilderness of (H)the sea.

(I)As whirlwinds in the Negeb sweep on,
    it comes from the wilderness,
    from a terrible land.
A stern vision is told to me;
    (J)the traitor betrays,
    and the destroyer destroys.
Go up, O (K)Elam;
    lay siege, O (L)Media;
all the (M)sighing she has caused
    I bring to an end.
Therefore my loins are filled with anguish;
    (N)pangs have seized me,
    like the pangs of a woman in labor;
I am bowed down so that I cannot hear;
    I am dismayed so that I cannot see.
My heart staggers; horror has appalled me;
    (O)the twilight I longed for
    has been turned for me into trembling.
(P)They prepare the table,
    they spread the rugs,[b]
    they eat, they drink.
Arise, O princes;
    (Q)oil the shield!
For thus the Lord said to me:
“Go, set a watchman;
    let him announce what he sees.

Then the Lord said, “Just as my servant(F) Isaiah has gone stripped and barefoot for three years,(G) as a sign(H) and portent(I) against Egypt(J) and Cush,[a](K) so the king(L) of Assyria will lead away stripped(M) and barefoot the Egyptian captives(N) and Cushite(O) exiles, young and old, with buttocks bared(P)—to Egypt’s shame.(Q) Those who trusted(R) in Cush(S) and boasted in Egypt(T) will be dismayed and put to shame.(U) In that day(V) the people who live on this coast will say, ‘See what has happened(W) to those we relied on,(X) those we fled to for help(Y) and deliverance from the king of Assyria! How then can we escape?(Z)’”

A Prophecy Against Babylon

21 A prophecy(AA) against the Desert(AB) by the Sea:

Like whirlwinds(AC) sweeping through the southland,(AD)
    an invader comes from the desert,
    from a land of terror.

A dire(AE) vision has been shown to me:
    The traitor betrays,(AF) the looter takes loot.
Elam,(AG) attack! Media,(AH) lay siege!
    I will bring to an end all the groaning she caused.

At this my body is racked with pain,(AI)
    pangs seize me, like those of a woman in labor;(AJ)
I am staggered by what I hear,
    I am bewildered(AK) by what I see.
My heart(AL) falters,
    fear makes me tremble;(AM)
the twilight I longed for
    has become a horror(AN) to me.

They set the tables,
    they spread the rugs,
    they eat, they drink!(AO)
Get up, you officers,
    oil the shields!(AP)

This is what the Lord says to me:

“Go, post a lookout(AQ)
    and have him report what he sees.
