“I will praise^(B) you, Lord.
    Although you were angry with me,
your anger has turned away^(C)
    and you have comforted^(D) me.
² Surely God is my salvation;^(E)
    I will trust^(F) and not be afraid.
The Lord, the Lord himself,^(G) is my strength^(H) and my defense^[a];
    he has become my salvation.^(I)”

“No longer will Jacob be ashamed;^(C)
    no longer will their faces grow pale.^(D)
23 When they see among them their children,^(E)
    the work of my hands,^(F)
they will keep my name holy;^(G)
    they will acknowledge the holiness of the Holy One^(H) of Jacob,
    and will stand in awe of the God of Israel.

¹³ Shout for joy,^(A) you heavens;
    rejoice, you earth;^(B)
    burst into song, you mountains!^(C)
For the Lord comforts^(D) his people
    and will have compassion^(E) on his afflicted ones.^(F)

⁴ They will rebuild the ancient ruins^(G)
    and restore the places long devastated;
they will renew the ruined cities
    that have been devastated for generations.
⁵ Strangers^(H) will shepherd your flocks;
    foreigners will work your fields and vineyards.
⁶ And you will be called priests^(I) of the Lord,
    you will be named ministers of our God.
You will feed on the wealth^(J) of nations,
    and in their riches you will boast.

⁷ Instead of your shame^(K)
    you will receive a double^(L) portion,
and instead of disgrace
    you will rejoice in your inheritance.
And so you will inherit^(M) a double portion in your land,
    and everlasting joy^(N) will be yours.

¹³ As a mother comforts her child,^(A)
    so will I comfort^(B) you;
    and you will be comforted over Jerusalem.”

¹⁴ When you see this, your heart will rejoice^(C)
    and you will flourish^(D) like grass;
the hand^(E) of the Lord will be made known to his servants,^(F)
    but his fury^(G) will be shown to his foes.
