The Judgment of God

33 Woe (A)to you, destroyer,
While you were not destroyed;
And he (B)who is treacherous, while others did not deal treacherously with him.
As soon as you finish destroying, (C)you will be destroyed;
As soon as you cease to deal treacherously, others will (D)deal treacherously with you.
Lord, (E)be gracious to us; we have (F)waited for You.
Be [a]their [b](G)strength every morning,
Our salvation also in the (H)time of distress.
At the sound of a roar, (I)peoples flee;
At the (J)lifting up of Yourself, nations disperse.
Your plunder is gathered as the caterpillar gathers;
Like an infestation of locusts, people storm it.
The Lord is (K)exalted, for He dwells on high;
He has (L)filled Zion with justice and righteousness.
And He will be the [c](M)stability of your times,
A (N)wealth of salvation, wisdom, and (O)knowledge;
The (P)fear of the Lord is his treasure.
Behold, their brave men cry out [d]in the streets,
The [e](Q)ambassadors of peace weep bitterly.
The highways are desolate, [f]the (R)traveler has ceased,
He has (S)broken the covenant, he has despised the cities,
He has no regard for mankind.
(T)The land mourns and wastes away,
(U)Lebanon is shamed and withers;
(V)Sharon is like a desert plain,
And Bashan and Carmel [g]lose their foliage.
10 “Now (W)I will arise,” says the Lord,
“Now I will be exalted, now I will be lifted up.
11 You have (X)conceived [h]chaff, you will give birth to stubble;
[i]My (Y)breath will consume you like a fire.
12 The peoples will be burned to lime,
(Z)Like cut thorns which are burned in the fire.

13 “You who are far away, (AA)hear what I have done;
And you who are near, [j]acknowledge My might.”
14 (AB)Sinners in Zion are terrified;
(AC)Trembling has seized the godless.
“Who among us can live with (AD)the consuming fire?
Who among us can live with everlasting (AE)burning?”
15 One who (AF)walks righteously and speaks with integrity,
One who rejects [k]unjust gain
And shakes his hands so that they hold no bribe;
One who stops his ears from hearing about bloodshed
And (AG)shuts his eyes from looking at evil;
16 He will dwell on the heights,
(AH)His refuge will be the [l]impregnable rock;
(AI)His bread will be given him,
His water will be sure.

17 Your eyes will see (AJ)the King in His beauty;
They will see (AK)a distant land.
18 Your heart will meditate on (AL)terror:
“Where is (AM)one who counts?
Where is one who weighs?
Where is one who counts the towers?”
19 You will no longer see a fierce people,
A people of [m](AN)unintelligible speech [n]which no one comprehends,
Of a stammering tongue [o]which no one understands.
20 (AO)Look at Zion, the city of our appointed feasts;
Your eyes will see Jerusalem, an (AP)undisturbed settlement,
(AQ)A tent which will not be folded;
Its stakes will never be pulled up,
Nor any of its ropes be torn apart.
21 But there the majestic One, the Lord, will be for us
A place of (AR)rivers and wide canals
On which no boat with oars will go,
And on which no mighty ship will pass—
22 For the Lord is our (AS)judge,
The Lord is (AT)our lawgiver,
The Lord is (AU)our king;
(AV)He will save us—
23 Your ship’s tackle hangs slack;
It cannot hold the base of its mast firmly,
Nor spread out the sail.
Then the (AW)prey of an abundant spoil will be divided;
(AX)Those who limp will take the plunder.
24 And no resident will say, “I am (AY)sick”;
The people who live [p]there will be (AZ)forgiven their wrongdoing.

God’s Wrath against Nations

34 Come near, (BA)you nations, to hear; and listen, you peoples!
(BB)Let the earth and [q]all it contains hear, and the world and all that springs from it.
For the Lords (BC)anger is against all the nations,
And His wrath against all their armies.
He has [r](BD)utterly destroyed them,
He has turned them over to (BE)slaughter.
So their slain will be (BF)thrown out,
And their corpses [s]will give off their (BG)stench,
And the mountains will [t]be drenched with their (BH)blood.
And (BI)all the heavenly [u]lights will [v]wear away,
And the (BJ)sky will be rolled up like a scroll;
All its [w]lights will also wither away
As a leaf withers from the vine,
Or as one withers from the fig tree.
For (BK)My sword has drunk its fill in heaven;
Behold it shall descend for judgment upon (BL)Edom,
And upon the people whom I have (BM)designated for destruction.
The sword of the Lord is filled with blood,
It drips with fat, with the blood of lambs and goats,
With the fat of the kidneys of rams.
For the Lord has a sacrifice in (BN)Bozrah,
And a great slaughter in the land of (BO)Edom.
(BP)Wild oxen will also [x]fall with them
And (BQ)young bulls with strong ones;
So their land will be (BR)soaked with blood,
And their dust [y]become greasy with fat.
For the Lord has a day of (BS)vengeance,
A year of retribution for the [z]cause of Zion.
[aa]Its streams will be turned into pitch,
And its loose earth into (BT)brimstone,
And its land will become burning pitch.
10 It will (BU)not be extinguished night or day;
Its (BV)smoke will go up forever.
From (BW)generation to generation it will be desolate;
(BX)None will pass through it forever and ever.
11 But [ab](BY)pelican and hedgehog will possess it,
And [ac]owl and raven will dwell in it;
And He will stretch over it the (BZ)line of [ad]desolation
And the [ae]plumb line of emptiness.
12 Its nobles—there is (CA)no one there
Whom they may proclaim king—
And all its officials will be (CB)nothing.
13 Thorns will come up in its (CC)fortified towers,
Weeds and thistles in its fortified cities;
It will also be a haunt of (CD)jackals
And a habitat of ostriches.
14 The desert (CE)creatures will meet with the [af]wolves,
The [ag](CF)goat also will cry to its kind.
Yes, the [ah]night-bird will settle there
And will find herself a resting place.
15 The tree snake will make its nest and lay eggs there,
And it will hatch and gather them under its [ai]protection.
Yes, (CG)the [aj]hawks will be gathered there,
Every one with its kind.

16 Seek from the (CH)book of the Lord, and read:

Not one of these will be missing;
None will lack its mate.
For [ak](CI)His mouth has commanded,
And His Spirit has gathered them.
17 He has cast the (CJ)lot for them,
And His hand has divided it to them by the (CK)measuring line.
They shall possess it forever;
From (CL)generation to generation they will dwell in it.

Zion’s Happy Future

35 The (CM)wilderness and the desert will rejoice,
And the [al](CN)desert will shout for joy and blossom;
Like the crocus
It will (CO)blossom profusely
And (CP)rejoice with joy and jubilation.
The (CQ)glory of Lebanon will be given to it,
The majesty of (CR)Carmel and Sharon.
They will see the (CS)glory of the Lord,
The majesty of our God.
(CT)Strengthen the [am]exhausted, and make the [an]feeble strong.
Say to those with (CU)anxious heart,
“Take courage, fear not.
Behold, your God will come with (CV)vengeance;
The (CW)retribution of God will come,
But He will (CX)save you.”
Then the (CY)eyes of those who are blind will be opened,
And the ears of those who are deaf will be unstopped.
Then those who (CZ)limp will leap like a deer,
And the (DA)tongue of those who cannot speak will shout for joy.
For waters will burst forth in the (DB)wilderness,
And streams in the [ao]desert.
The [ap]scorched land will become a pool
And the thirsty ground (DC)springs of water;
In the (DD)haunt of jackals, its resting place,
Grass becomes reeds and rushes.
(DE)A highway will be there, (DF)a roadway,
And it will be called the Highway of (DG)Holiness.
The unclean will not travel on it,
But it will be for the one who walks that way,
And (DH)fools will not wander on it.
No (DI)lion will be there,
Nor will any vicious animal go up on it;
[aq]They will not be found there.
But (DJ)the redeemed will walk there,
10 And (DK)the redeemed of the Lord will return
And come to Zion with joyful shouting,
And everlasting joy will be on their heads.
They will obtain gladness and joy,
And (DL)sorrow and sighing will flee away.

A Prayer in Deep Distress

33 Woe to you (A)who plunder, though you have not been plundered;
And you who deal treacherously, though they have not dealt treacherously with you!
(B)When you cease plundering,
You will be (C)plundered;
When you make an end of dealing treacherously,
They will deal treacherously with you.

O Lord, be gracious to us;
(D)We have waited for You.
Be [a]their arm every morning,
Our salvation also in the time of trouble.
At the noise of the tumult the people (E)shall flee;
When You lift Yourself up, the nations shall be scattered;
And Your plunder shall be gathered
Like the gathering of the caterpillar;
As the running to and fro of locusts,
He shall run upon them.

(F)The Lord is exalted, for He dwells on high;
He has filled Zion with justice and righteousness.
Wisdom and knowledge will be the stability of your times,
And the strength of salvation;
The fear of the Lord is His treasure.

Surely their valiant ones shall cry outside,
(G)The ambassadors of peace shall weep bitterly.
(H)The highways lie waste,
The traveling man ceases.
(I)He has broken the covenant,
[b]He has despised the [c]cities,
He regards no man.
(J)The earth mourns and languishes,
Lebanon is shamed and shriveled;
Sharon is like a wilderness,
And Bashan and Carmel shake off their fruits.

Impending Judgment on Zion

10 “Now(K) I will rise,” says the Lord;
“Now I will be exalted,
Now I will lift Myself up.
11 (L)You shall conceive chaff,
You shall bring forth stubble;
Your breath, as fire, shall devour you.
12 And the people shall be like the burnings of lime;
(M)Like thorns cut up they shall be burned in the fire.
13 Hear, (N)you who are afar off, what I have done;
And you who are near, acknowledge My might.”

14 The sinners in Zion are afraid;
Fearfulness has seized the hypocrites:
“Who among us shall dwell with the devouring (O)fire?
Who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings?”
15 He who (P)walks righteously and speaks uprightly,
He who despises the gain of oppressions,
Who gestures with his hands, refusing bribes,
Who stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed,
And (Q)shuts his eyes from seeing evil:
16 He will dwell on [d]high;
His place of defense will be the fortress of rocks;
Bread will be given him,
His water will be sure.

The Land of the Majestic King

17 Your eyes will see the King in His (R)beauty;
They will see the land that is very far off.
18 Your heart will meditate on terror:
(S)“Where is the scribe?
Where is he who weighs?
Where is he who counts the towers?”
19 (T)You will not see a fierce people,
(U)A people of obscure speech, beyond perception,
Of a [e]stammering tongue that you cannot understand.

20 (V)Look upon Zion, the city of our appointed feasts;
Your eyes will see (W)Jerusalem, a quiet home,
A tabernacle that will not be taken down;
(X)Not one of (Y)its stakes will ever be removed,
Nor will any of its cords be broken.
21 But there the majestic Lord will be for us
A place of broad rivers and streams,
In which no [f]galley with oars will sail,
Nor majestic ships pass by
22 (For the Lord is our (Z)Judge,
The Lord is our (AA)Lawgiver,
(AB)The Lord is our King;
He will save us);
23 Your tackle is loosed,
They could not strengthen their mast,
They could not spread the sail.

Then the prey of great plunder is divided;
The lame take the prey.
24 And the inhabitant will not say, “I am sick”;
(AC)The people who dwell in it will be forgiven their iniquity.

Judgment on the Nations

34 Come (AD)near, you nations, to hear;
And heed, you people!
(AE)Let the earth hear, and all that is in it,
The world and all things that come forth from it.
For the indignation of the Lord is against all nations,
And His fury against all their armies;
He has utterly destroyed them,
He has given them over to the (AF)slaughter.
Also their slain shall be thrown out;
(AG)Their stench shall rise from their corpses,
And the mountains shall be melted with their blood.
(AH)All the host of heaven shall be dissolved,
And the heavens shall be rolled up like a scroll;
(AI)All their host shall fall down
As the leaf falls from the vine,
And as (AJ)fruit falling from a fig tree.

“For (AK)My sword shall be bathed in heaven;
Indeed it (AL)shall come down on Edom,
And on the people of My curse, for judgment.
The (AM)sword of the Lord is filled with blood,
It is made [g]overflowing with fatness,
With the blood of lambs and goats,
With the fat of the kidneys of rams.
For (AN)the Lord has a sacrifice in Bozrah,
And a great slaughter in the land of Edom.
The wild oxen shall come down with them,
And the young bulls with the mighty bulls;
Their land shall be soaked with blood,
And their dust [h]saturated with fatness.”

For it is the day of the Lord’s (AO)vengeance,
The year of recompense for the cause of Zion.
(AP)Its streams shall be turned into pitch,
And its dust into brimstone;
Its land shall become burning pitch.
10 It shall not be quenched night or day;
(AQ)Its smoke shall ascend forever.
(AR)From generation to generation it shall lie waste;
No one shall pass through it forever and ever.
11 (AS)But the [i]pelican and the [j]porcupine shall possess it,
Also the owl and the raven shall dwell in it.
And (AT)He shall stretch out over it
The line of confusion and the stones of emptiness.
12 They shall call its nobles to the kingdom,
But none shall be there, and all its princes shall be nothing.

13 And (AU)thorns shall come up in its palaces,
Nettles and brambles in its fortresses;
(AV)It shall be a habitation of jackals,
A courtyard for ostriches.
14 The wild beasts of the desert shall also meet with the [k]jackals,
And the wild goat shall bleat to its companion;
Also [l]the night creature shall rest there,
And find for herself a place of rest.
15 There the arrow snake shall make her nest and lay eggs
And hatch, and gather them under her shadow;
There also shall the hawks be gathered,
Every one with her mate.

16 “Search from (AW)the book of the Lord, and read:
Not one of these shall fail;
Not one shall lack her mate.
For My mouth has commanded it, and His Spirit has gathered them.
17 He has cast the lot for them,
And His hand has divided it among them with a measuring line.
They shall possess it forever;
From generation to generation they shall dwell in it.”

The Future Glory of Zion

35 The (AX)wilderness and the [m]wasteland shall be glad for them,
And the (AY)desert[n] shall rejoice and blossom as the rose;
(AZ)It shall blossom abundantly and rejoice,
Even with joy and singing.
The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it,
The excellence of Carmel and Sharon.
They shall see the (BA)glory of the Lord,
The excellency of our God.

(BB)Strengthen the [o]weak hands,
And make firm the [p]feeble knees.
Say to those who are fearful-hearted,
“Be strong, do not fear!
Behold, your God will come with (BC)vengeance,
With the recompense of God;
He will come and (BD)save you.”

Then the (BE)eyes of the blind shall be opened,
And (BF)the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped.
Then the (BG)lame shall leap like a deer,
And the (BH)tongue of the dumb sing.
For (BI)waters shall burst forth in the wilderness,
And streams in the desert.
The parched ground shall become a pool,
And the thirsty land springs of water;
In (BJ)the habitation of jackals, where each lay,
There shall be grass with reeds and rushes.

A (BK)highway shall be there, and a road,
And it shall be called the Highway of Holiness.
(BL)The unclean shall not pass over it,
But it shall be for others.
Whoever walks the road, although a fool,
Shall not go astray.
(BM)No lion shall be there,
Nor shall any ravenous beast go up on it;
It shall not be found there.
But the redeemed shall walk there,
10 And the (BN)ransomed of the Lord shall return,
And come to Zion with singing,
With everlasting joy on their heads.
They shall obtain joy and gladness,
And (BO)sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

Lawsuits Discouraged

Does any one of you, when he has a [a]case against [b]his neighbor, dare to go to law before the unrighteous and (A)not before the [c]saints? Or (B)do you not know that (C)the [d]saints will judge (D)the world? If the world is judged by you, are you not competent to form the smallest [e]law courts? (E)Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more matters of this life? So if you have law courts dealing with matters of this life, [f]do you appoint them as judges who are of no account in the church? (F)I say this to your shame. Is it so, that there is not among you anyone wise who will be able to decide between his (G)brothers and sisters, but brother goes to law with brother, and that before (H)unbelievers?

Actually, then, it is already a defeat for you, that you have lawsuits with one another. (I)Why not rather suffer the wrong? Why not rather be defrauded? On the contrary, you yourselves do wrong and defraud. And this to your (J)brothers and sisters!

Or (K)do you not know that the unrighteous will not (L)inherit the kingdom of God? (M)Do not be deceived; (N)neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor [g]homosexuals, 10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor those habitually drunk, nor verbal abusers, nor swindlers, will (O)inherit the kingdom of God. 11 (P)Such were some of you; but you were (Q)washed, but you were (R)sanctified, but you were (S)justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and [h]in the Spirit of our God.

The Body Is the Lord’s

12 (T)All things are permitted for me, but not all things are of benefit. All things are permitted for me, but I will not be mastered by anything. 13 (U)Food is for the stomach and the stomach is for food, however God will (V)do away with both [i]of them. But the body is not for sexual immorality, but (W)for the Lord, and (X)the Lord is for the body. 14 Now God has not only (Y)raised the Lord, but (Z)will also raise us up through His power. 15 (AA)Do you not know that (AB)your bodies are parts of Christ? Shall I then take away the parts of Christ and make them parts of a prostitute? [j](AC)Far from it! 16 Or (AD)do you not know that the one who joins himself to a prostitute is one body with her? For He says, “(AE)The two shall become one flesh.” 17 But the one who joins himself to the Lord is (AF)one spirit with Him. 18 (AG)Flee sexual immorality. Every other sin that a person commits is outside the body, but the [k]sexually immoral person sins against his own body. 19 Or (AH)do you not know that (AI)your body is a [l]temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from [m]God, and that (AJ)you are not your own? 20 For (AK)you have been bought for a price: therefore glorify God in (AL)your body.

Do Not Sue the Brethren

Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to law before the unrighteous, and not before the (A)saints? Do you not know that (B)the saints will judge the world? And if the world will be judged by you, are you unworthy to judge the smallest matters? Do you not know that we shall (C)judge angels? How much more, things that pertain to this life? If then you have [a]judgments concerning things pertaining to this life, do you appoint those who are least esteemed by the church to judge? I say this to your shame. Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you, not even one, who will be able to judge between his brethren? But brother goes to law against brother, and that before unbelievers!

Now therefore, it is already an utter failure for you that you go to law against one another. (D)Why do you not rather accept wrong? Why do you not rather let yourselves be cheated? No, you yourselves do wrong and cheat, and you do these things to your brethren! Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. (E)Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor [b]homosexuals, nor [c]sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were (F)some of you. (G)But you were washed, but you were [d]sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.

Glorify God in Body and Spirit

12 (H)All things are lawful for me, but all things are not [e]helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of [f]any. 13 (I)Foods for the stomach and the stomach for foods, but God will destroy both it and them. Now the body is not for (J)sexual immorality but (K)for the Lord, (L)and the Lord for the body. 14 And (M)God both raised up the Lord and will also raise us up (N)by His power.

15 Do you not know that (O)your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a harlot? Certainly not! 16 Or do you not know that he who is joined to a harlot is one body with her? For (P)“the two,” He says, “shall become one flesh.” 17 (Q)But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.

18 (R)Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins (S)against his own body. 19 Or (T)do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, (U)and you are not your own? 20 For (V)you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body [g]and in your spirit, which are God’s.
