The women (A)sang as they [a]played, and said,

(B)Saul has slain his thousands,
(C)And David his ten thousands.”

Then Saul became very angry, for this lyric [b]displeased him; and he said, “They have given David credit for ten thousands, but to me they have given credit for only thousands! Now what more can he have but the (D)kingdom?” And Saul eyed David with suspicion from that day on.

As they danced, they sang:(A)

Saul was very angry; this refrain displeased him greatly. “They have credited David with tens of thousands,” he thought, “but me with only thousands. What more can he get but the kingdom?(C) And from that time on Saul kept a close(D) eye on David.
