4 They speak mere words,
[a]With (A)worthless oaths they make covenants;
And (B)judgment sprouts like poisonous weeds in the furrows of the field.
5 The inhabitants of Samaria will fear
For the [b](C)calf of (D)Beth-aven.
Indeed, its people will mourn for it,
And its (E)idolatrous priests [c]will cry out over it,
Over its (F)glory, since it has left it.
6 The thing itself will be brought to (G)Assyria
As a gift of tribute to [d](H)King Jareb;
Ephraim will [e]be (I)seized with shame,
And Israel will be ashamed of its (J)own plan.
7 Samaria will be (K)destroyed with her king,
Like a twig on the surface of the water.
8 Also the (L)high places of Aven, the (M)sin of Israel, will be destroyed;
(N)Thorns and thistles will grow on their altars;
Then they will (O)say to the mountains,
“Cover us!” And to the hills, “Fall on us!”

4 They make many promises,
take false oaths(A)
and make agreements;(B)
therefore lawsuits spring up
like poisonous weeds(C) in a plowed field.
5 The people who live in Samaria fear
for the calf-idol(D) of Beth Aven.[a](E)
Its people will mourn over it,
and so will its idolatrous priests,(F)
those who had rejoiced over its splendor,
because it is taken from them into exile.(G)
6 It will be carried to Assyria(H)
as tribute(I) for the great king.(J)
Ephraim will be disgraced;(K)
Israel will be ashamed(L) of its foreign alliances.
7 Samaria’s king will be destroyed,(M)
swept away like a twig on the surface of the waters.
8 The high places(N) of wickedness[b](O) will be destroyed—
it is the sin of Israel.
Thorns(P) and thistles will grow up
and cover their altars.(Q)
Then they will say to the mountains, “Cover us!”(R)
and to the hills, “Fall on us!”(S)
