12 In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths(A) of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food!(B) 13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant,(C) is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. 14 But solid food is for the mature,(D) who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.(E)

Therefore let us move beyond(F) the elementary teachings(G) about Christ and be taken forward to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death,[a](H) and of faith in God, instruction about cleansing rites,[b](I) the laying on of hands,(J) the resurrection of the dead,(K) and eternal judgment. And God permitting,(L) we will do so.

12 For though [a]by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you (A)the [b](B)elementary principles of the (C)actual words of God, and you have come to need (D)milk and not solid food. 13 For everyone who partakes only of milk is unacquainted with the word of righteousness, for he is an (E)infant. 14 But solid food is for (F)the mature, who because of practice have their senses (G)trained to (H)distinguish between good and evil.

The Danger of Falling Away

Therefore (I)leaving (J)the [c]elementary teaching about the [d]Christ, let us press on to [e](K)maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from (L)dead works and of faith toward God, of (M)instruction about [f]washings and (N)laying on of hands, and about the (O)resurrection of the dead and (P)eternal judgment. And this we will do, (Q)if God permits.

12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers [because of the time you have had to learn these truths], you actually need someone to teach you again the elementary principles of God’s word [from the beginning], and you have come to be continually in need of milk, not solid food. 13 For everyone who lives on milk is [doctrinally inexperienced and] unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a spiritual infant. 14 But solid food is for the [spiritually] mature, whose senses are trained by practice to distinguish between what is morally good and what is evil.

The Peril of Falling Away

Therefore let us get past the elementary stage in the teachings about the Christ, advancing on to maturity and perfection and spiritual completeness, [doing this] without laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, of teaching about washings (ritual purifications), the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. [These are all important matters in which you should have been proficient long ago.] And we will do this [that is, proceed to maturity], if God permits.

12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.

13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.

14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,

Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.

And this will we do, if God permit.

12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again (A)the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need (B)milk, not solid food, 13 for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is (C)a child. 14 But solid food is for (D)the mature, for those who have their powers (E)of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.

Therefore (F)let us leave (G)the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance (H)from dead works and of faith toward God, and of (I)instruction about washings,[a] (J)the laying on of hands, (K)the resurrection of the dead, and (L)eternal judgment. And this we will do (M)if God permits.
