Warning Against Neglecting Salvation

2 Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. ² For since ^(A)the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and ^(B)every transgression or disobedience received a just ^(C)retribution, ^3 (D)how shall we escape if we ^(E)neglect such a great salvation? It was ^(F)declared at first by the Lord, and it was ^(G)attested to us ^(H)by those who heard,

³⁹ And all these, ^(A)though commended through their faith, ^(B)did not receive what was promised, ⁴⁰ since God had provided something better for us, ^(C)that apart from us they should not be made perfect.

12 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and ^(D)sin which clings so closely, and ^(E)let us run ^(F)with endurance the race that is ^(G)set before us, ² looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, ^(H)who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising ^(I)the shame, and ^(J)is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
