The Old and the New

Now even the first covenant had (A)regulations for divine worship and (B)the earthly sanctuary. For (C)a [a]tabernacle was equipped, the [b]outer sanctuary, in which were (D)the lampstand, (E)the table, and (F)the [c]sacred bread; this is called the Holy Place. Behind (G)the second veil there was a [d]tabernacle which is called the (H)Most Holy Place, having a golden [e](I)altar of incense and (J)the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, in which was (K)a golden jar holding the manna, (L)Aaron’s staff which budded, and (M)the tablets of the covenant; and above it were the (N)cherubim of glory (O)overshadowing the [f]atoning cover; but about these things we cannot now speak in detail.

Now when these things have been so prepared, the priests (P)are continually entering the [g]outer [h]tabernacle, performing the divine worship, but into (Q)the second, only (R)the high priest enters (S)once a year, (T)not without taking blood which he (U)offers for himself and for the [i](V)sins of the people committed in ignorance. (W)The Holy Spirit is signifying this, (X)that the way into the holy place has not yet been disclosed while the [j]outer tabernacle is still standing, which is a symbol for the present time. Accordingly (Y)both gifts and sacrifices are offered which (Z)cannot make the worshiper perfect in conscience, 10 since they relate only to (AA)food, (AB)drink, and various (AC)washings, (AD)regulations for the [k]body imposed until (AE)a time of reformation.

11 But when Christ appeared as a (AF)high priest of the (AG)good things [l]having come, He entered through (AH)the greater and more perfect [m]tabernacle, (AI)not made by hands, that is, (AJ)not of this creation; 12 and not through (AK)the blood of goats and calves, but (AL)through His own blood, He (AM)entered the holy place (AN)once for all time, [n]having obtained (AO)eternal redemption. 13 For if (AP)the blood of goats and bulls, and (AQ)the [o]ashes of a heifer sprinkling those who have been defiled, sanctify for the [p]cleansing of the flesh, 14 how much more will (AR)the blood of Christ, who through [q](AS)the eternal Spirit (AT)offered Himself without blemish to God, (AU)cleanse your conscience from (AV)dead works to serve (AW)the living God?

15 For this reason (AX)He is the (AY)mediator of a (AZ)new covenant, so that, since a death has taken place for the redemption of the violations that were committed under the first covenant, those who have been (BA)called may (BB)receive the promise of (BC)the eternal inheritance. 16 For where there is a [r]covenant, there must of necessity [s]be the death of the one who made it. 17 For a [t]covenant is valid only when people are dead, [u]for it is never in force while the one who made it lives. 18 Therefore even the first covenant was not inaugurated without blood. 19 For when every commandment had been (BD)spoken by Moses to all the people according to the Law, (BE)he took the (BF)blood of the calves and the goats, with (BG)water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both (BH)the book itself and all the people, 20 saying, “(BI)This is the blood of the covenant which God commanded you.” 21 And in the same way he (BJ)sprinkled both the [v]tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry with the blood. 22 And (BK)almost all things are cleansed with blood, according to the Law, and (BL)without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.

23 Therefore it was necessary for the (BM)copies of the things in the heavens to be cleansed with these things, but (BN)the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24 For Christ (BO)did not enter a holy place made by hands, a mere copy of (BP)the true one, but into (BQ)heaven itself, now (BR)to appear in the presence of God for us; 25 nor was it that He would offer Himself often, as (BS)the high priest enters (BT)the Holy Place (BU)year by year with blood that is not his own. 26 Otherwise, He would have needed to suffer often since (BV)the foundation of the world; but now (BW)once at (BX)the consummation of the ages He has been (BY)revealed to put away sin [w](BZ)by the sacrifice of Himself. 27 And just as (CA)it is destined for people to die once, and after this (CB)comes judgment, 28 so Christ also, having been (CC)offered once to (CD)bear the sins of many, will appear (CE)a second time for (CF)salvation (CG)without reference to sin, to those who (CH)eagerly await Him.

One Sacrifice of Christ Is Sufficient

10 For the Law, since it has only (CI)a shadow of (CJ)the good things to come and not the [x]form of those things itself, [y]can (CK)never, by the same sacrifices which they offer continually every year, (CL)make those who approach perfect. Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, because the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have had (CM)consciousness of sins? But (CN)in [z]those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. For it is (CO)impossible for the (CP)blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. Therefore, (CQ)when He comes into the world, He says,

(CR)You have not desired sacrifice and offering,
But (CS)You have prepared a body for Me;
(CT)You have not taken pleasure in whole burnt offerings and offerings for sin.
(CU)Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come
(It is written of Me in (CV)the scroll of the book)
To do Your will, O God.’”

After saying above, “(CW)Sacrifices and offerings and (CX)whole burnt offerings and offerings (CY)for sin You have not desired, nor have You taken pleasure in them” (which are offered according to the Law), then He [aa]said, “(CZ)Behold, I have come to do Your will.” He takes away the first in order to establish the second. 10 By [ab]this will, we have been (DA)sanctified through (DB)the offering of (DC)the body of Jesus Christ (DD)once for all time.

11 Every priest stands daily ministering and (DE)offering time after time the same sacrifices, which (DF)can never take away sins; 12 but He, having offered one sacrifice (DG)for [ac]sins (DH)for all time, (DI)sat down at the right hand of God, 13 waiting from that time onward (DJ)until His enemies are made a footstool for His feet. 14 For by one offering He has (DK)perfected (DL)for all time those who are [ad]sanctified. 15 And (DM)the Holy Spirit also testifies to us; for after saying,

16 (DN)This is the covenant which I will make with them
After those days, declares the Lord:
I will put My laws upon their hearts,
And write them on their mind,”

He then says,

17 (DO)And their sins and their lawless deeds
I will no longer remember.”

18 Now where there is forgiveness of these things, an offering for sin is no longer required.

A New and Living Way

19 Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we (DP)have confidence to (DQ)enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by (DR)a new and living way which He inaugurated for us through (DS)the veil, that is, through His flesh, 21 and since we have (DT)a great priest (DU)over the house of God, 22 let’s (DV)approach God with a [ae]sincere heart in (DW)full assurance of faith, having our hearts (DX)sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies (DY)washed with pure water. 23 Let’s hold firmly to the (DZ)confession of our (EA)hope without wavering, for (EB)He who promised is faithful; 24 and let’s consider how (EC)to [af]encourage one another in love and (ED)good deeds, 25 not abandoning our own (EE)meeting together, as is the habit of some people, but (EF)encouraging one another; and all the more as you see (EG)the day drawing near.

Christ or Judgment

26 For if we go on (EH)sinning willfully after receiving (EI)the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a terrifying expectation of (EJ)judgment and (EK)the fury of a fire which will consume the adversaries. 28 (EL)Anyone who has ignored the Law of Moses is put to death without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 (EM)How much more severe punishment do you think he will deserve (EN)who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has regarded as unclean (EO)the blood of the covenant (EP)by which he was sanctified, and has (EQ)insulted the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know Him who said, “(ER)Vengeance is Mine, I will repay.” And again, “(ES)The Lord will judge His people.” 31 It is a (ET)terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the (EU)living God.

32 But remember (EV)the former days, [ag]when, after being (EW)enlightened, you endured a great (EX)conflict of sufferings, 33 partly by being (EY)made a public spectacle through insults and distress, and partly by becoming [ah](EZ)companions with those who were so treated. 34 For you (FA)showed sympathy to the prisoners and accepted (FB)joyfully the seizure of your property, knowing that you have for yourselves (FC)a better and lasting possession. 35 Therefore, do not throw away your (FD)confidence, which has a great (FE)reward. 36 For you have need of (FF)endurance, so that when you have (FG)done the will of God, you may (FH)receive [ai]what was promised.

37 (FI)For yet in a very little while,
(FJ)He who is coming will come, and will not delay.
38 (FK)But My righteous one will live by faith;
And if he shrinks back, My soul has no pleasure in him.

39 But [aj]we are not among those who shrink back to destruction, but of those who have faith for the safekeeping of the soul.

The Earthly Sanctuary(A)

Then indeed, even the first covenant had ordinances of divine service and (B)the earthly sanctuary. For a tabernacle was prepared: the first part, in which was the lampstand, the table, and the showbread, which is called the [a]sanctuary; (C)and behind the second veil, the part of the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of All, which had the (D)golden censer and (E)the ark of the covenant overlaid on all sides with gold, in which were (F)the golden pot that had the manna, (G)Aaron’s rod that budded, and (H)the tablets of the covenant; and (I)above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat. Of these things we cannot now speak in detail.

Limitations of the Earthly Service

Now when these things had been thus prepared, (J)the priests always went into the first part of the tabernacle, performing the services. But into the second part the high priest went alone (K)once a year, not without blood, which he offered for (L)himself and for the people’s sins committed in ignorance; the Holy Spirit indicating this, that (M)the way into the Holiest of All was not yet made manifest while the first tabernacle was still standing. It was symbolic for the present time in which both gifts and sacrifices are offered (N)which cannot make him who performed the service perfect in regard to the conscience— 10 concerned only with (O)foods and drinks, (P)various [b]washings, (Q)and fleshly ordinances imposed until the time of reformation.

The Heavenly Sanctuary

11 But Christ came as High Priest of (R)the good things [c]to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation. 12 Not (S)with the blood of goats and calves, but (T)with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place (U)once for all, (V)having obtained eternal redemption. 13 For if (W)the blood of bulls and goats and (X)the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, [d]sanctifies for the [e]purifying of the flesh, 14 how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without [f]spot to God, (Y)cleanse your conscience from (Z)dead works (AA)to serve the living God? 15 And for this reason (AB)He is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, that (AC)those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.

The Mediator’s Death Necessary

16 For where there is a testament, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. 17 For (AD)a testament is in force after men are dead, since it has no power at all while the testator lives. 18 (AE)Therefore not even the first covenant was dedicated without blood. 19 For when Moses had spoken every [g]precept to all the people according to the law, (AF)he took the blood of calves and goats, (AG)with water, scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, 20 saying, (AH)“This is the (AI)blood of the covenant which God has commanded you.” 21 Then likewise (AJ)he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry. 22 And according to the law almost all things are [h]purified with blood, and (AK)without shedding of blood there is no [i]remission.

Greatness of Christ’s Sacrifice

23 Therefore it was necessary that (AL)the copies of the things in the heavens should be [j]purified with these, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24 For (AM)Christ has not entered the holy places made with hands, which are [k]copies of (AN)the true, but into heaven itself, now (AO)to appear in the presence of God for us; 25 not that He should offer Himself often, as (AP)the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood of another— 26 He then would have had to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now, once at the end of the ages, He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself. 27 (AQ)And as it is appointed for men to die once, (AR)but after this the judgment, 28 so (AS)Christ was (AT)offered once to bear the sins (AU)of many. To those who (AV)eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.

Animal Sacrifices Insufficient

10 For the law, having a (AW)shadow of the good things to come, and not the very image of the things, (AX)can never with these same sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect. For then would they not have ceased to be offered? For the worshipers, once [l]purified, would have had no more consciousness of sins. But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. For (AY)it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.

Christ’s Death Fulfills God’s Will(AZ)

Therefore, when He came into the world, He said:

(BA)“Sacrifice and offering You did not desire,
But a body You have prepared for Me.
In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin
You had no pleasure.
Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come—
In the volume of the book it is written of Me—
To do Your will, O God.’ ”

Previously saying, “Sacrifice and offering, burnt offerings, and offerings for sin You did not desire, nor had pleasure in them” (which are offered according to the law), then He said, “Behold, I have come to do Your will, [m]O God.” He takes away the first that He may establish the second. 10 (BB)By that will we have been [n]sanctified (BC)through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

Christ’s Death Perfects the Sanctified

11 And every priest stands (BD)ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 (BE)But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down (BF)at the right hand of God, 13 from that time waiting (BG)till His enemies are made His footstool. 14 For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being [o]sanctified.

15 But the Holy Spirit also witnesses to us; for after He had said before,

16 (BH)“This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds I will write them,” 17 then He adds, (BI)“Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.” 18 Now where there is [p]remission of these, there is no longer an offering for sin.

Hold Fast Your Confession

19 Therefore, brethren, having (BJ)boldness[q] to enter (BK)the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and (BL)living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, 21 and having a High Priest over the house of God, 22 let us (BM)draw near with a true heart (BN)in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for (BO)He who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, 25 (BP)not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and (BQ)so much the more as you see (BR)the Day approaching.

The Just Live by Faith

26 For (BS)if we sin willfully (BT)after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there (BU)no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and (BV)fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries. 28 Anyone who has rejected Moses’ law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three (BW)witnesses. 29 (BX)Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, (BY)counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, (BZ)and insulted the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know Him who said, (CA)“Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” [r]says the Lord. And again, (CB)“The Lord will judge His people.” 31 (CC)It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

32 But (CD)recall the former days in which, after you were [s]illuminated, you endured a great struggle with sufferings: 33 partly while you were made (CE)a spectacle both by reproaches and tribulations, and partly while (CF)you became companions of those who were so treated; 34 for you had compassion on [t]me (CG)in my chains, and (CH)joyfully accepted the plundering of your [u]goods, knowing that (CI)you have a better and an enduring possession for yourselves [v]in heaven. 35 Therefore do not cast away your confidence, (CJ)which has great reward. 36 (CK)For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, (CL)you may receive the promise:

37 “For (CM)yet a little while,
And (CN)He[w] who is coming will come and will not [x]tarry.
38 Now (CO)the[y] just shall live by faith;
But if anyone draws back,
My soul has no pleasure in him.”

39 But we are not of those (CP)who draw back to [z]perdition, but of those who (CQ)believe to the saving of the soul.

Blood for Atonement

17 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to Aaron and to his sons and to all the sons of Israel, and say to them, ‘This is what the Lord has commanded, saying, “Anyone from the house of Israel who slaughters an ox, a lamb, or a goat in the camp, or slaughters it outside the camp, and (A)has not brought it to the doorway of the tent of meeting to present it as an offering to the Lord in front of the [a]tabernacle of the Lord, bloodshed is to be counted against that person. He has shed blood, and that person shall be cut off from among his people. This shall be done so that the sons of Israel will bring their sacrifices which they were sacrificing [b]in the open field—so that they will bring them to the Lord at the doorway of the tent of meeting to the priest, and sacrifice them as sacrifices of peace offerings to the Lord. The priest shall sprinkle the blood on the altar of the Lord at the doorway of the tent of meeting, and (B)offer up the fat in smoke as a soothing aroma to the Lord. And (C)they shall no longer offer their sacrifices to the [c]goat demons with which they play the prostitute. This shall be a permanent statute to them throughout their generations.”’

“Then you shall say to them, ‘Anyone from the house of Israel, or from the strangers who reside among them, who offers a burnt offering or sacrifice, and (D)does not bring it to the doorway of the tent of meeting to [d]offer it to the Lord, that person also shall be cut off from his people.

10 (E)And anyone from the house of Israel, or from the strangers who reside among them, who eats any blood, (F)I will set My face against that person who eats the blood, and will cut him off from among his people. 11 For (G)the [e]life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you on the altar to make atonement for your souls; for (H)it is the blood by reason of the [f]life that makes atonement.’ 12 Therefore I said to the sons of Israel, ‘No person among you may eat blood, nor may any stranger who resides among you eat blood.’ 13 So when anyone from the sons of Israel, or from the strangers who reside among them, [g]while hunting catches an animal or a bird which may be eaten, (I)he shall pour out its blood and cover it with dirt.

14 (J)For as for the [h]life of all flesh, its blood is identified with its [i]life. Therefore I said to the sons of Israel, ‘You are not to eat the blood of any flesh, for the [j]life of all flesh is its blood; whoever eats it shall be cut off.’ 15 And (K)any person who eats an animal which dies or is torn by animals, whether he is a native or a stranger, shall wash his clothes and bathe in water, and remain unclean until evening; then he will become clean. 16 But if he does not wash his clothes and bathe his body, then (L)he shall bear the responsibility for his [k]guilt.”

The Sanctity of Blood

17 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to Aaron, to his sons, and to all the children of Israel, and say to them, ‘This is the thing which the Lord has commanded, saying: “Whatever man of the house of Israel who (A)kills an ox or lamb or goat in the camp, or who kills it outside the camp, and does not bring it to the door of the tabernacle of meeting to offer an offering to the Lord before the tabernacle of the Lord, the guilt of bloodshed shall be (B)imputed to that man. He has shed blood; and that man shall be [a]cut off from among his people, to the end that the children of Israel may bring their sacrifices (C)which they offer in the open field, that they may bring them to the Lord at the door of the tabernacle of meeting, to the priest, and offer them as peace offerings to the Lord. And the priest (D)shall sprinkle the blood on the altar of the Lord at the door of the tabernacle of meeting, and (E)burn the fat for a sweet aroma to the Lord. They shall no more offer their sacrifices (F)to [b]demons, after whom they (G)have played the harlot. This shall be a statute forever for them throughout their generations.” ’

“Also you shall say to them: ‘Whatever man of the house of Israel, or of the strangers who dwell among you, (H)who offers a burnt offering or sacrifice, and does not (I)bring it to the door of the tabernacle of meeting, to offer it to the Lord, that man shall be [c]cut off from among his people.

10 (J)‘And whatever man of the house of Israel, or of the strangers who dwell among you, who eats any blood, (K)I will set My face against that person who eats blood, and will cut him off from among his people. 11 For the (L)life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar (M)to make atonement for your souls; for (N)it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul.’ 12 Therefore I said to the children of Israel, ‘No one among you shall eat blood, nor shall any stranger who dwells among you eat blood.’

13 “Whatever man of the children of Israel, or of the strangers who dwell among you, who (O)hunts and catches any animal or bird that may be eaten, he shall (P)pour out its blood and (Q)cover it with dust; 14 (R)for it is the life of all flesh. Its blood sustains its life. Therefore I said to the children of Israel, ‘You shall not eat the blood of any flesh, for the life of all flesh is its blood. Whoever eats it shall be cut off.’

15 (S)“And every person who eats what died naturally or what was torn by beasts, whether he is a native of your own country or a stranger, (T)he shall both wash his clothes and (U)bathe in water, and be unclean until evening. Then he shall be clean. 16 But if he does not wash them or bathe his body, then (V)he shall bear his [d]guilt.”
