Jesus Our High Priest

Therefore, (A)holy brothers and sisters, partakers of a (B)heavenly calling, consider (C)the Apostle and (D)High Priest of our (E)confession: Jesus; [a]He was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as (F)Moses also was in all His house. (G)For He has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, by just so much as the builder of the house has more honor than the house. For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God. Now (H)Moses was faithful in all [b]God’s house as (I)a servant, (J)for a testimony of those things (K)which were to be spoken later; but Christ was faithful as (L)a Son over His house—(M)whose house we are, (N)if we hold firmly to our (O)confidence and the boast of our [c](P)hope.

Therefore, just as (Q)the Holy Spirit says,

(R)Today if you hear His voice,
(S)Do not harden your hearts as [d]when they provoked Me,
As on the day of trial in the wilderness,
(T)Where your fathers put Me to the test,
And saw My works for (U)forty years.
10 (V)Therefore I was angry with this generation,
And said, ‘They always go astray in their heart,
And they did not know My ways’;
11 (W)As I swore in My anger,
They certainly shall not enter My rest.’”

The Danger of Unbelief

12 (X)Take care, brothers and sisters, that there will not be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart [e]that falls away from (Y)the living God. 13 But (Z)encourage one another every day, as long as it is still called “today,” so that none of you will be hardened by the (AA)deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have become partakers of Christ (AB)if we keep the beginning of our [f](AC)commitment firm until the end, 15 while it is said,

(AD)Today if you hear His voice,
Do not harden your hearts, as [g]when they provoked Me.”

16 For who (AE)provoked Him when they had heard? Indeed, (AF)did not all those who came out of Egypt led by Moses? 17 And with whom was He angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, (AG)whose dead bodies fell in the wilderness? 18 And to whom did He swear (AH)that they would not enter His rest, but to those who were (AI)disobedient? 19 And so we see that they were not able to enter because of (AJ)unbelief.

The Believer’s Rest

Therefore, we must fear if, while a promise remains of entering His rest, any one of you may seem to have (AK)come short of it. For indeed we have had good news preached to us, just as they also did; but (AL)the word [h]they heard did not benefit them, because [i]they were not united with those who listened with faith. For we who have believed enter that rest, just as He has said,

(AM)As I swore in My anger,
They certainly shall not enter My rest,”

although His works were finished (AN)from the foundation of the world. For He has said (AO)somewhere concerning the seventh day: “(AP)And God (AQ)rested on the seventh day from all His works”; and again in this passage, “(AR)They certainly shall not enter My rest.” Therefore, since it remains for some to enter it, and those who previously had good news preached to them failed to enter because of (AS)disobedience, He again sets a certain day, “Today,” saying [j]through David after so long a time just (AT)as has been said before,

(AU)Today if you hear His voice,
Do not harden your hearts.”

For (AV)if [k]Joshua had given them rest, He would not have spoken of another day after that. Consequently, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God. 10 For the one who has entered His rest has himself also (AW)rested from his works, as (AX)God did from His. 11 Therefore let’s make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following the same (AY)example of (AZ)disobedience. 12 For (BA)the word of God is (BB)living and (BC)active, and sharper than any two-edged (BD)sword, even penetrating as far as the division of (BE)soul and (BF)spirit, of both joints and marrow, and (BG)able to [l]judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 And (BH)there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are (BI)open and laid bare to the eyes of Him to whom [m]we must answer.

14 Therefore, since we have a great (BJ)high priest who has (BK)passed through the heavens, Jesus (BL)the Son of God, let’s hold firmly to our (BM)confession. 15 For we do not have (BN)a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been (BO)tempted in all things just as we are, yet (BP)without sin. 16 Therefore let’s (BQ)approach the throne of grace with (BR)confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace for help at the time of our need.

The Son Was Faithful

Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus, who was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as (A)Moses also was faithful in all His house. For this One has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as (B)He who built the house has more honor than the house. For every house is built by someone, but (C)He who built all things is God. (D)And Moses indeed was faithful in all His house as (E)a servant, (F)for a testimony of those things which would be spoken afterward, but Christ as (G)a Son over His own house, (H)whose house we are (I)if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope [a]firm to the end.

Be Faithful(J)

Therefore, as (K)the Holy Spirit says:

(L)“Today, if you will hear His voice,
Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion,
In the day of trial in the wilderness,
Where your fathers tested Me, tried Me,
And saw My works forty years.
10 Therefore I was angry with that generation,
And said, ‘They always go astray in their heart,
And they have not known My ways.’
11 So I swore in My wrath,
‘They shall not enter My rest.’ ”

12 Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God; 13 but [b]exhort one another daily, while it is called “Today,” lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end, 15 while it is said:

(M)“Today, if you will hear His voice,
Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”

Failure of the Wilderness Wanderers

16 (N)For who, having heard, rebelled? Indeed, was it not all who came out of Egypt, led by Moses? 17 Now with whom was He angry forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, (O)whose corpses fell in the wilderness? 18 And (P)to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who did not obey? 19 So we see that they could not enter in because of (Q)unbelief.

The Promise of Rest

Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, (R)let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it. For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, [c]not being mixed with faith in those who heard it. For we who have believed do enter that rest, as He has said:

(S)“So I swore in My wrath,
‘They shall not enter My rest,’ ”

although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. For He has spoken in a certain place of the seventh day in this way: (T)“And God rested on the seventh day from all His works”; and again in this place: (U)“They shall not enter My rest.”

Since therefore it remains that some must enter it, and those to whom it was first preached did not enter because of disobedience, again He designates a certain day, saying in David, “Today,” after such a long time, as it has been said:

(V)“Today, if you will hear His voice,
Do not harden your hearts.”

For if [d]Joshua had (W)given them rest, then He would not afterward have spoken of another day. There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. 10 For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His.

The Word Discovers Our Condition

11 (X)Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience. 12 For the word of God is (Y)living and powerful, and (Z)sharper than any (AA)two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is (AB)a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13 (AC)And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are (AD)naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.

Our Compassionate High Priest

14 Seeing then that we have a great (AE)High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, (AF)let us hold fast our confession. 15 For (AG)we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but (AH)was in all points tempted as we are, (AI)yet without sin. 16 (AJ)Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Jesus Greater Than Moses

Therefore, holy brothers and sisters,(A) who share in the heavenly calling,(B) fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge(C) as our apostle and high priest.(D) He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was faithful in all God’s house.(E) Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses,(F) just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself. For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything.(G) “Moses was faithful as a servant(H) in all God’s house,”[a](I) bearing witness to what would be spoken by God in the future. But Christ is faithful as the Son(J) over God’s house. And we are his house,(K) if indeed we hold firmly(L) to our confidence and the hope(M) in which we glory.

Warning Against Unbelief

So, as the Holy Spirit says:(N)

“Today, if you hear his voice,
    do not harden your hearts(O)
as you did in the rebellion,
    during the time of testing in the wilderness,
where your ancestors tested and tried me,
    though for forty years they saw what I did.(P)
10 That is why I was angry with that generation;
    I said, ‘Their hearts are always going astray,
    and they have not known my ways.’
11 So I declared on oath in my anger,(Q)
    ‘They shall never enter my rest.’ (R)[b](S)

12 See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God.(T) 13 But encourage one another daily,(U) as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.(V) 14 We have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold(W) our original conviction firmly to the very end.(X) 15 As has just been said:

“Today, if you hear his voice,
    do not harden your hearts
    as you did in the rebellion.”[c](Y)

16 Who were they who heard and rebelled? Were they not all those Moses led out of Egypt?(Z) 17 And with whom was he angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies perished in the wilderness?(AA) 18 And to whom did God swear that they would never enter his rest(AB) if not to those who disobeyed?(AC) 19 So we see that they were not able to enter, because of their unbelief.(AD)

A Sabbath-Rest for the People of God

Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it.(AE) For we also have had the good news proclaimed to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because they did not share the faith of those who obeyed.[d](AF) Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said,

“So I declared on oath in my anger,
    ‘They shall never enter my rest.’”[e](AG)

And yet his works have been finished since the creation of the world. For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: “On the seventh day God rested from all his works.”[f](AH) And again in the passage above he says, “They shall never enter my rest.”(AI)

Therefore since it still remains for some to enter that rest, and since those who formerly had the good news proclaimed to them did not go in because of their disobedience,(AJ) God again set a certain day, calling it “Today.” This he did when a long time later he spoke through David, as in the passage already quoted:

“Today, if you hear his voice,
    do not harden your hearts.”[g](AK)

For if Joshua had given them rest,(AL) God would not have spoken(AM) later about another day. There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; 10 for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works,[h](AN) just as God did from his.(AO) 11 Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience.(AP)

12 For the word of God(AQ) is alive(AR) and active.(AS) Sharper than any double-edged sword,(AT) it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.(AU) 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight.(AV) Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

Jesus the Great High Priest

14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest(AW) who has ascended into heaven,[i](AX) Jesus the Son of God,(AY) let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.(AZ) 15 For we do not have a high priest(BA) who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are(BB)—yet he did not sin.(BC) 16 Let us then approach(BD) God’s throne of grace with confidence,(BE) so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

The Law of Grain Offerings

‘Now when anyone presents a (A)grain offering as an offering to the Lord, his offering shall be of fine flour, and he shall pour oil on it and put frankincense on it. He shall then bring it to Aaron’s sons the priests; and he shall take from it (B)his handful of its fine flour and of its oil, with all of its frankincense. And the priest shall offer it up in smoke as its (C)memorial portion on the altar, an offering by fire of a soothing aroma to the Lord. (D)The remainder of the grain offering belongs to (E)Aaron and his sons: a most holy part of the offerings to the Lord by fire.

‘Now when you bring an offering of a grain offering baked in an oven, it shall be (F)unleavened cakes of fine flour mixed with oil, or unleavened wafers [a]spread with oil. And if your offering is a grain offering made (G)on the griddle, it shall be of fine flour, unleavened, mixed with oil; you shall break it into bits and pour oil on it; it is a grain offering. Now if your offering is a grain offering made (H)in a [b]pan, it shall be made of fine flour with oil. When you bring in the grain offering which is made of these things to the Lord, it shall be presented to the priest, and he shall bring it to the altar. The priest then shall take up from the grain offering (I)its memorial portion, and shall offer it up in smoke on the altar as an offering by fire of a soothing aroma to the Lord. 10 (J)The remainder of the grain offering belongs to Aaron and his sons: a most holy part of the offerings to the Lord by fire.

11 (K)No grain offering, which you bring to the Lord, shall be made with leaven, for you shall not offer [c]up in smoke any leaven or any honey as an (L)offering by fire to the Lord. 12 (M)As an offering of first fruits you shall bring them to the Lord, but they shall not ascend as a soothing aroma on the altar. 13 Every grain offering of yours, moreover, you shall season with salt, so that (N)the salt of the covenant of your God will not be lacking from your grain offering; with all your offerings you shall offer salt.

14 ‘Also if you bring a grain offering of early ripened things to the Lord, you shall bring (O)fresh heads of grain roasted in the fire, crushed grain of new growth, for the grain offering of your early ripened produce. 15 You shall then put oil on it and place incense on it; it is a grain offering. 16 Then the priest shall offer up in smoke (P)its memorial portion, part of its crushed grain and its oil with all its incense as an offering by fire to the Lord.

It is an (J)offering made by fire, a sweet aroma to the Lord. 10 And (K)what is left of the grain offering shall be Aaron’s and his sons’. It is most holy of the offerings to the Lord made by fire.

11 ‘No grain offering which you bring to the Lord shall be made with (L)leaven, for you shall burn no leaven nor any honey in any offering to the Lord made by fire. 12 (M)As for the offering of the firstfruits, you shall offer them to the Lord, but they shall not be burned on the altar for a sweet aroma. 13 And every offering of your grain offering (N)you shall season with salt; you shall not allow (O)the salt of the covenant of your God to be lacking from your grain offering. (P)With all your offerings you shall offer salt.

14 ‘If you offer a grain offering of your firstfruits to the Lord, (Q)you shall offer for the grain offering of your firstfruits green heads of grain roasted on the fire, grain beaten from (R)full heads. 15 And (S)you shall put oil on it, and lay frankincense on it. It is a grain offering. 16 Then the priest shall burn (T)the memorial portion: part of its beaten grain and part of its oil, with all the frankincense, as an offering made by fire to the Lord.

The Grain Offering

Crumble it and pour oil on it; it is a grain offering. If your grain offering is cooked in a pan,(Q) it is to be made of the finest flour and some olive oil. Bring the grain offering made of these things to the Lord; present it to the priest, who shall take it to the altar. He shall take out the memorial portion(R) from the grain offering and burn it on the altar as a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the Lord.(S) 10 The rest of the grain offering belongs to Aaron and his sons;(T) it is a most holy part of the food offerings presented to the Lord.(U)

11 “‘Every grain offering you bring to the Lord must be made without yeast,(V) for you are not to burn any yeast or honey in a food offering presented to the Lord. 12 You may bring them to the Lord as an offering of the firstfruits,(W) but they are not to be offered on the altar as a pleasing aroma. 13 Season all your grain offerings with salt.(X) Do not leave the salt of the covenant(Y) of your God out of your grain offerings; add salt to all your offerings.

14 “‘If you bring a grain offering of firstfruits(Z) to the Lord, offer crushed heads of new grain roasted in the fire. 15 Put oil and incense(AA) on it; it is a grain offering. 16 The priest shall burn the memorial portion(AB) of the crushed grain and the oil, together with all the incense,(AC) as a food offering presented to the Lord.(AD)
