Do Not Neglect Salvation

Therefore we must give [a]the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away. For if the word (A)spoken through angels proved steadfast, and (B)every transgression and disobedience received a just [b]reward, (C)how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, (D)which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was (E)confirmed to us by those who heard Him, (F)God also bearing witness (G)both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and (H)gifts[c] of the Holy Spirit, (I)according to His own will?

The Son Made Lower than Angels(J)

For He has not put (K)the world to come, of which we speak, in subjection to angels. But one testified in a certain place, saying:

(L)“What is man that You are mindful of him,
Or the son of man that You take care of him?
You have made him [d]a little lower than the angels;
You have crowned him with glory and honor,
[e]And set him over the works of Your hands.
(M)You have put all things in subjection under his feet.”

For in that He put all in subjection under him, He left nothing that is not put under him. But now (N)we do not yet see all things put under him. But we see Jesus, (O)who was made [f]a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death (P)crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death (Q)for everyone.

Bringing Many Sons to Glory

10 For it was fitting for Him, (R)for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation (S)perfect through sufferings. 11 For (T)both He who [g]sanctifies and those who are being sanctified (U)are all of one, for which reason (V)He is not ashamed to call them brethren, 12 saying:

(W)“I will declare Your name to My brethren;
In the midst of the assembly I will sing praise to You.”

13 And again:

(X)“I will put My trust in Him.”

And again:

(Y)“Here am I and the children whom God has given Me.”

14 Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He (Z)Himself likewise shared in the same, (AA)that through death He might destroy him who had the power of (AB)death, that is, the devil, 15 and release those who (AC)through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. 16 For indeed He does not [h]give aid to angels, but He does [i]give aid to the seed of Abraham. 17 Therefore, in all things He had (AD)to be made like His brethren, that He might be (AE)a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18 (AF)For in that He Himself has suffered, being [j]tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted.

The Son Was Faithful

Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus, who was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as (AG)Moses also was faithful in all His house. For this One has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as (AH)He who built the house has more honor than the house. For every house is built by someone, but (AI)He who built all things is God. (AJ)And Moses indeed was faithful in all His house as (AK)a servant, (AL)for a testimony of those things which would be spoken afterward, but Christ as (AM)a Son over His own house, (AN)whose house we are (AO)if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope [k]firm to the end.

Be Faithful(AP)

Therefore, as (AQ)the Holy Spirit says:

(AR)“Today, if you will hear His voice,
Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion,
In the day of trial in the wilderness,
Where your fathers tested Me, tried Me,
And saw My works forty years.
10 Therefore I was angry with that generation,
And said, ‘They always go astray in their heart,
And they have not known My ways.’
11 So I swore in My wrath,
‘They shall not enter My rest.’ ”

12 Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God; 13 but [l]exhort one another daily, while it is called “Today,” lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end, 15 while it is said:

(AS)“Today, if you will hear His voice,
Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”

Failure of the Wilderness Wanderers

16 (AT)For who, having heard, rebelled? Indeed, was it not all who came out of Egypt, led by Moses? 17 Now with whom was He angry forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, (AU)whose corpses fell in the wilderness? 18 And (AV)to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who did not obey? 19 So we see that they could not enter in because of (AW)unbelief.

The Promise of Rest

Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, (AX)let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it. For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, [m]not being mixed with faith in those who heard it. For we who have believed do enter that rest, as He has said:

(AY)“So I swore in My wrath,
‘They shall not enter My rest,’ ”

although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. For He has spoken in a certain place of the seventh day in this way: (AZ)“And God rested on the seventh day from all His works”; and again in this place: (BA)“They shall not enter My rest.”

Since therefore it remains that some must enter it, and those to whom it was first preached did not enter because of disobedience, again He designates a certain day, saying in David, “Today,” after such a long time, as it has been said:

(BB)“Today, if you will hear His voice,
Do not harden your hearts.”

For if [n]Joshua had (BC)given them rest, then He would not afterward have spoken of another day. There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. 10 For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His.

The Word Discovers Our Condition

11 (BD)Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience. 12 For the word of God is (BE)living and powerful, and (BF)sharper than any (BG)two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is (BH)a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13 (BI)And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are (BJ)naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.

Our Compassionate High Priest

14 Seeing then that we have a great (BK)High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, (BL)let us hold fast our confession. 15 For (BM)we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but (BN)was in all points tempted as we are, (BO)yet without sin. 16 (BP)Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Qualifications for High Priesthood

For every high priest taken from among men (BQ)is appointed for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can [o]have compassion on those who are ignorant and going astray, since he himself is also subject to (BR)weakness. Because of this he is required as for the people, so also for (BS)himself, to offer sacrifices for sins. And no man takes this honor to himself, but he who is called by God, just as (BT)Aaron was.

A Priest Forever

(BU)So also Christ did not glorify Himself to become High Priest, but it was He who said to Him:

(BV)“You are My Son,
Today I have begotten You.”

As He also says in another place:

(BW)“You are a priest forever
According to the order of Melchizedek”;

who, in the days of His flesh, when He had (BX)offered up prayers and supplications, (BY)with vehement cries and tears to Him (BZ)who was able to save Him from death, and was heard (CA)because of His godly fear, though He was a Son, yet He learned (CB)obedience by the things which He suffered. And (CC)having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him, 10 called by God as High Priest (CD)“according to the order of Melchizedek,” 11 of whom (CE)we have much to say, and hard to explain, since you have become (CF)dull of hearing.

Spiritual Immaturity

12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the [p]oracles of God; and you have come to need (CG)milk and not solid food. 13 For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is (CH)a babe. 14 But solid food belongs to those who are [q]of full age, that is, those who by reason of [r]use have their senses exercised (CI)to discern both good and evil.

The Peril of Not Progressing

Therefore, (CJ)leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to [s]perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from (CK)dead works and of faith toward God, (CL)of the doctrine of baptisms, (CM)of laying on of hands, (CN)of resurrection of the dead, (CO)and of eternal judgment. And this [t]we will do if God permits.

For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted (CP)the heavenly gift, and (CQ)have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, [u]if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, (CR)since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open shame.

For the earth which drinks in the rain that often comes upon it, and bears herbs useful for those by whom it is cultivated, (CS)receives blessing from God; (CT)but if it bears thorns and briers, it is rejected and near to being cursed, whose end is to be burned.

A Better Estimate

But, beloved, we are confident of better things concerning you, yes, things that accompany salvation, though we speak in this manner. 10 For (CU)God is not unjust to forget (CV)your work and [v]labor of love which you have shown toward His name, in that you have (CW)ministered to the saints, and do minister. 11 And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence (CX)to the full assurance of hope until the end, 12 that you do not become [w]sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience (CY)inherit the promises.

God’s Infallible Purpose in Christ

13 For when God made a promise to Abraham, because He could swear by no one greater, (CZ)He swore by Himself, 14 saying, (DA)“Surely blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply you.” 15 And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the (DB)promise. 16 For men indeed swear by the greater, and (DC)an oath for confirmation is for them an end of all dispute. 17 Thus God, determining to show more abundantly to (DD)the heirs of promise (DE)the [x]immutability of His counsel, [y]confirmed it by an oath, 18 that by two [z]immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to (DF)lie, we [aa]might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope (DG)set before us.

19 This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, (DH)and which enters the Presence behind the veil, 20 (DI)where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, (DJ)having become High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.

The King of Righteousness(DK)

For this (DL)Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, to whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all, first being translated “king of righteousness,” and then also king of Salem, meaning “king of peace,” without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, remains a priest continually.

Now consider how great this man was, to whom even the patriarch Abraham gave a tenth of the [ab]spoils. And indeed (DM)those who are of the sons of Levi, who receive the priesthood, have a commandment to receive tithes from the people according to the law, that is, from their brethren, though they have come from the loins of Abraham; but he whose genealogy is not derived from them received tithes from Abraham (DN)and blessed (DO)him who had the promises. Now beyond all contradiction the lesser is blessed by the better. Here mortal men receive tithes, but there he receives them, (DP)of whom it is witnessed that he lives. Even Levi, who receives tithes, paid tithes through Abraham, so to speak, 10 for he was still in the loins of his father when Melchizedek met him.

Need for a New Priesthood(DQ)

11 (DR)Therefore, if perfection were through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people received the law), what further need was there that another priest should rise according to the order of Melchizedek, and not be called according to the order of Aaron? 12 For the priesthood being changed, of necessity there is also a change of the law. 13 For He of whom these things are spoken belongs to another tribe, from which no man has [ac]officiated at the altar.

14 For it is evident that (DS)our Lord arose from (DT)Judah, of which tribe Moses spoke nothing concerning [ad]priesthood. 15 And it is yet far more evident if, in the likeness of Melchizedek, there arises another priest 16 who has come, not according to the law of a fleshly commandment, but according to the power of an endless life. 17 For [ae]He testifies:

(DU)“You are a priest forever
According to the order of Melchizedek.”

18 For on the one hand there is an annulling of the former commandment because of (DV)its weakness and unprofitableness, 19 for (DW)the law made nothing [af]perfect; on the other hand, there is the bringing in of (DX)a better hope, through which (DY)we draw near to God.

Greatness of the New Priest

20 And inasmuch as He was not made priest without an oath 21 (for they have become priests without an oath, but He with an oath by Him who said to Him:

(DZ)“The Lord has sworn
And will not relent,
‘You are a priest [ag]forever
According to the order of Melchizedek’ ”),

22 by so much more Jesus has become a [ah]surety of a (EA)better covenant.

23 Also there were many priests, because they were prevented by death from continuing. 24 But He, because He continues forever, has an unchangeable priesthood. 25 Therefore He is also (EB)able to save [ai]to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives (EC)to make intercession for them.

26 For such a High Priest was fitting for us, (ED)who is holy, [aj]harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, (EE)and has become higher than the heavens; 27 who does not need daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His (EF)own sins and then for the people’s, for this He did once for all when He offered up Himself. 28 For the law appoints as high priests men who have weakness, but the word of the oath, which came after the law, appoints the Son who has been perfected forever.
