God Disciplines His Children

In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.(A) And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says,

“My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline,
and do not lose heart(B) when he rebukes you,
because the Lord disciplines the one he loves,(C)
and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”[a](D)

Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children.(E) For what children are not disciplined by their father? If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline(F)—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all.

  1. Hebrews 12:6 Prov. 3:11,12 (see Septuagint)

After all, you have not yet given your lives in your struggle against sin.

And have you forgotten the encouraging words God spoke to you as his children?[a] He said,

“My child,[b] don’t make light of the Lord’s discipline,
and don’t give up when he corrects you.
For the Lord disciplines those he loves,
and he punishes each one he accepts as his child.”[c]

As you endure this divine discipline, remember that God is treating you as his own children. Who ever heard of a child who is never disciplined by its father? If God doesn’t discipline you as he does all of his children, it means that you are illegitimate and are not really his children at all.

(A)You have not yet resisted to bloodshed, striving against sin. And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons:

(B)“My son, do not despise the [a]chastening of the Lord,
Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him;
For (C)whom the Lord loves He chastens,
And scourges every son whom He receives.”

(D)If[b] you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what (E)son is there whom a father does not chasten? But if you are without chastening, (F)of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons.
