Then the word of the Lord came by the prophet Haggai, saying: “Is it a time for you yourselves to live in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins?(A) Now therefore thus says the Lord of hosts: Consider how you have fared.(B) You have sown much and harvested little; you eat, but you never have enough; you drink, but you never have your fill; you clothe yourselves, but no one is warm; and you that earn wages earn wages to put them into a bag with holes.(C)

“Thus says the Lord of hosts: Consider how you have fared. Go up to the hills and bring wood and build the house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored, says the Lord.(D) You have looked for much, but it came to little, and when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why? says the Lord of hosts. Because my house lies in ruins, while all of you hurry off to your own houses.(E) 10 Therefore the heavens above you have withheld the dew, and the earth has withheld its produce.(F) 11 And I have called for a drought[a] on the land and the hills, on the grain, the new wine, the oil, on what the soil produces, on humans and animals, and on all their labors.”(G)

12 Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the Lord their God and the words of the prophet Haggai, as the Lord their God had sent him, and the people feared the Lord.(H)

  1. 1.11 Or ruin

Then the word of the Lord came through the prophet Haggai:(A) “Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses,(B) while this house remains a ruin?(C)

Now this is what the Lord Almighty says: “Give careful thought(D) to your ways. You have planted much, but harvested little.(E) You eat, but never have enough.(F) You drink, but never have your fill.(G) You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages,(H) only to put them in a purse with holes in it.”

This is what the Lord Almighty says: “Give careful thought(I) to your ways. Go up into the mountains and bring down timber(J) and build my house, so that I may take pleasure(K) in it and be honored,(L)” says the Lord. “You expected much, but see, it turned out to be little.(M) What you brought home, I blew(N) away. Why?” declares the Lord Almighty. “Because of my house, which remains a ruin,(O) while each of you is busy with your own house. 10 Therefore, because of you the heavens have withheld(P) their dew(Q) and the earth its crops.(R) 11 I called for a drought(S) on the fields and the mountains,(T) on the grain, the new wine,(U) the olive oil(V) and everything else the ground produces, on people and livestock, and on all the labor of your hands.(W)

12 Then Zerubbabel(X) son of Shealtiel, Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest, and the whole remnant(Y) of the people obeyed(Z) the voice of the Lord their God and the message of the prophet Haggai, because the Lord their God had sent him. And the people feared(AA) the Lord.
