Habacuc se queja de injusticia

1 La profecía que vio el profeta Habacuc. 2 ¿Hasta cuándo, oh Jehová, clamaré, y no oirás; y daré voces a ti a causa de la violencia, y no salvarás? 3 ¿Por qué me haces ver iniquidad, y haces que vea molestia? Destrucción y violencia están delante de mí, y pleito y contienda se levantan. 4 Por lo cual la ley es debilitada, y el juicio no sale según la verdad; por cuanto el impío asedia al justo, por eso sale torcida la justicia.

Los caldeos castigarán a Judá

5 Mirad entre las naciones, y ved, y asombraos; porque haré una obra en vuestros días, que aun cuando se os contare, no la creeréis.(A) 6 Porque he aquí, yo levanto a los caldeos,(B) nación cruel y presurosa, que camina por la anchura de la tierra para poseer las moradas ajenas. 7 Formidable es y terrible; de ella misma procede su justicia y su dignidad. 8 Sus caballos serán más ligeros que leopardos, y más feroces que lobos nocturnos, y sus jinetes se multiplicarán; vendrán de lejos sus jinetes, y volarán como águilas que se apresuran a devorar. 9 Toda ella vendrá a la presa; el terror va delante de ella, y recogerá cautivos como arena. 10 Escarnecerá a los reyes, y de los príncipes hará burla; se reirá de toda fortaleza, y levantará terraplén y la tomará. 11 Luego pasará como el huracán, y ofenderá atribuyendo su fuerza a su dios.

Protesta de Habacuc

12 ¿No eres tú desde el principio, oh Jehová, Dios mío, Santo mío? No moriremos. Oh Jehová, para juicio lo pusiste; y tú, oh Roca, lo fundaste para castigar. 13 Muy limpio eres de ojos para ver el mal, ni puedes ver el agravio; ¿por qué ves a los menospreciadores, y callas cuando destruye el impío al más justo que él, 14 y haces que sean los hombres como los peces del mar, como reptiles que no tienen quien los gobierne? 15 Sacará a todos con anzuelo, los recogerá con su red, y los juntará en sus mallas; por lo cual se alegrará y se regocijará. 16 Por esto hará sacrificios a su red, y ofrecerá sahumerios a sus mallas; porque con ellas engordó su porción, y engrasó su comida. 17 ¿Vaciará por eso su red, y no tendrá piedad de aniquilar naciones continuamente?

Jehová responde a Habacuc

2 Sobre mi guarda estaré, y sobre la fortaleza afirmaré el pie, y velaré para ver lo que se me dirá, y qué he de responder tocante a mi queja. 2 Y Jehová me respondió, y dijo: Escribe la visión, y declárala en tablas, para que corra el que leyere en ella. 3 Aunque la visión tardará aún por un tiempo, mas se apresura hacia el fin, y no mentirá; aunque tardare, espéralo, porque sin duda vendrá, no tardará.(C) 4 He aquí que aquel cuya alma no es recta, se enorgullece; mas el justo por su fe vivirá.(D) 5 Y también, el que es dado al vino es traicionero, hombre soberbio, que no permanecerá; ensanchó como el Seol su alma, y es como la muerte, que no se saciará; antes reunió para sí todas las gentes, y juntó para sí todos los pueblos.

Ayes contra los injustos

6 ¿No han de levantar todos estos refrán sobre él, y sarcasmos contra él? Dirán: ¡Ay del que multiplicó lo que no era suyo! ¿Hasta cuándo había de acumular sobre sí prenda tras prenda? 7 ¿No se levantarán de repente tus deudores, y se despertarán los que te harán temblar, y serás despojo para ellos? 8 Por cuanto tú has despojado a muchas naciones, todos los otros pueblos te despojarán, a causa de la sangre de los hombres, y de los robos de la tierra, de las ciudades y de todos los que habitan en ellas.

9 ¡Ay del que codicia injusta ganancia para su casa, para poner en alto su nido, para escaparse del poder del mal! 10 Tomaste consejo vergonzoso para tu casa, asolaste muchos pueblos, y has pecado contra tu vida. 11 Porque la piedra clamará desde el muro, y la tabla del enmaderado le responderá.

12 ¡Ay del que edifica la ciudad con sangre, y del que funda una ciudad con iniquidad! 13 ¿No es esto de Jehová de los ejércitos? Los pueblos, pues, trabajarán para el fuego, y las naciones se fatigarán en vano. 14 Porque la tierra será llena del conocimiento de la gloria de Jehová, como las aguas cubren el mar.(E)

15 ¡Ay del que da de beber a su prójimo! ¡Ay de ti, que le acercas tu hiel, y le embriagas para mirar su desnudez! 16 Te has llenado de deshonra más que de honra; bebe tú también, y serás descubierto; el cáliz de la mano derecha de Jehová vendrá hasta ti, y vómito de afrenta sobre tu gloria. 17 Porque la rapiña del Líbano caerá sobre ti, y la destrucción de las fieras te quebrantará, a causa de la sangre de los hombres, y del robo de la tierra, de las ciudades y de todos los que en ellas habitaban.

18 ¿De qué sirve la escultura que esculpió el que la hizo?, ¿la estatua de fundición que enseña mentira, para que haciendo imágenes mudas confíe el hacedor en su obra? 19 ¡Ay del que dice al palo: Despiértate; y a la piedra muda: Levántate! ¿Podrá él enseñar? He aquí está cubierto de oro y plata, y no hay espíritu dentro de él.

20 Mas Jehová está en su santo templo; calle delante de él toda la tierra.

3 Oración del profeta Habacuc, sobre Sigionot.

2 Oh Jehová, he oído tu palabra, y temí.

Oh Jehová, aviva tu obra en medio de los tiempos,

En medio de los tiempos hazla conocer;

En la ira acuérdate de la misericordia.

3 Dios vendrá de Temán,

Y el Santo desde el monte de Parán. Selah

Su gloria cubrió los cielos,

Y la tierra se llenó de su alabanza.

4 Y el resplandor fue como la luz;

Rayos brillantes salían de su mano,

Y allí estaba escondido su poder.

5 Delante de su rostro iba mortandad,

Y a sus pies salían carbones encendidos.

6 Se levantó, y midió la tierra;

Miró, e hizo temblar las gentes;

Los montes antiguos fueron desmenuzados,

Los collados antiguos se humillaron.

Sus caminos son eternos.

7 He visto las tiendas de Cusán en aflicción;

Las tiendas de la tierra de Madián temblaron.

8 ¿Te airaste, oh Jehová, contra los ríos?

¿Contra los ríos te airaste?

¿Fue tu ira contra el mar

Cuando montaste en tus caballos,

Y en tus carros de victoria?

9 Se descubrió enteramente tu arco;

Los juramentos a las tribus fueron palabra segura. Selah

Hendiste la tierra con ríos.

10 Te vieron y tuvieron temor los montes;

Pasó la inundación de las aguas;

El abismo dio su voz,

A lo alto alzó sus manos.

11 El sol y la luna se pararon en su lugar;

A la luz de tus saetas anduvieron,

Y al resplandor de tu fulgente lanza.

12 Con ira hollaste la tierra,

Con furor trillaste las naciones.

13 Saliste para socorrer a tu pueblo,

Para socorrer a tu ungido.

Traspasaste la cabeza de la casa del impío,

Descubriendo el cimiento hasta la roca. Selah

14 Horadaste con sus propios dardos las cabezas de sus guerreros,

Que como tempestad acometieron para dispersarme,

Cuyo regocijo era como para devorar al pobre encubiertamente.

15 Caminaste en el mar con tus caballos,

Sobre la mole de las grandes aguas.

16 Oí, y se conmovieron mis entrañas;

A la voz temblaron mis labios;

Pudrición entró en mis huesos, y dentro de mí me estremecí;

Si bien estaré quieto en el día de la angustia,

Cuando suba al pueblo el que lo invadirá con sus tropas.

17 Aunque la higuera no florezca,

Ni en las vides haya frutos,

Aunque falte el producto del olivo,

Y los labrados no den mantenimiento,

Y las ovejas sean quitadas de la majada,

Y no haya vacas en los corrales;

18 Con todo, yo me alegraré en Jehová,

Y me gozaré en el Dios de mi salvación.

19 Jehová el Señor es mi fortaleza,

El cual hace mis pies como de ciervas,(F)

Y en mis alturas me hace andar.

Chaldeans Used to Punish Judah

1 The (A)pronouncement which Habakkuk the prophet saw:

2 (B)How long, Lord, have I called for help,
And You do not hear?
I cry out to You, “Violence!”
Yet You do (C)not save.
3 Why do You make me (D)see disaster,
And make me look at destitution?
Yes, (E)devastation and violence are before me;
(F)Strife exists and contention arises.
4 Therefore the (G)Law [a]is ignored,
And justice [b]is never upheld.
For the wicked (H)surround the righteous;
Therefore justice comes out (I)confused.

5 “(J)Look among the nations! Watch!
Be horrified! (K)Be frightened speechless!
For I am accomplishing (L)a work in your days—
You would not believe it even if [c]you were told!
6 For behold, I am (M)raising up the Chaldeans,
That [d]grim and impetuous people
Who march [e]throughout the earth,
To (N)take possession of dwelling places that are not theirs.
7 They are terrifying and (O)feared;
Their (P)justice and [f]authority [g]originate with themselves.
8 Their (Q)horses are faster than leopards,
And quicker than (R)wolves in the evening.
Their [h]horsemen charge along,
Their [i]horsemen come from afar;
They fly like an (S)eagle [j]swooping down to devour.
9 All of them come for violence.
[k]Their horde of (T)faces moves forward.
They gather captives like sand.
10 They (U)make fun of kings,
And dignitaries are an object of laughter to them.
They (V)laugh at every fortress,

11 Then they fly along like the (X)wind and pass on.
But they will be held (Y)guilty,
They whose (Z)strength is their god.”

12 Are You not from (AA)time everlasting,
Lord, my God, my Holy One?
We will not die.
You, Lord, have (AB)appointed them to deliver judgment;
And You, O (AC)Rock, have destined them to punish.
13 Your eyes are too (AD)pure to look at evil,
And You cannot look at harm favorably.
Why do You (AE)look favorably
At those who deal (AF)treacherously?
Why are You (AG)silent when the wicked (AH)swallow up
Those more righteous than they?
14 Why have You made people like the fish of the sea,
Like crawling things that have no ruler over them?
15 The Chaldeans (AI)bring all of them up with a hook,
(AJ)Drag them away with their net,
And gather them together in their fishing net.
Therefore they rejoice and are joyful.
16 Therefore they offer a sacrifice to their net
And [m]burn incense to their fishing net,
Because through (AK)these things their [n]catch is [o]large,
And their food is [p]plentiful.
17 Will they therefore empty their (AL)net,
And continually (AM)slay nations without sparing?

God Answers the Prophet

2 I will (AN)stand at my guard post
And station myself on the watchtower;
And I will (AO)keep watch to see (AP)what He will say to me,
And how I may reply [q]when I am reprimanded.
2 Then the Lord answered me and said,
“(AQ)Write down the vision
And inscribe it clearly on tablets,
So that one who [r]reads it may run.
3 For the vision is yet for the (AR)appointed time;
It [s]hurries toward the goal and it will not [t]fail.
Though it delays, (AS)wait for it;
For it will certainly come, it (AT)will not delay long.

4 “Behold, as for the (AU)impudent one,
His soul is not right within him;
But the (AV)righteous one will live by his [u]faith.
5 Furthermore, (AW)wine betrays an (AX)arrogant man,
So that he does not (AY)achieve his objective.
He (AZ)enlarges his appetite like Sheol,
And he is like death, never satisfied.
He also gathers to himself all the nations
And collects to himself all the peoples.

6 “Will all of these not (BA)take up a song of ridicule against him,
Even a saying and insinuations against him
And say, ‘(BB)Woe to him who increases what is not his—
For how long—
And makes himself [v]rich with debts!’
7 Will [w]your creditors not (BC)rise up suddenly,
And those who [x]collect from you awaken?
Indeed, you will become plunder for them.
8 Since you have (BD)looted many nations,
All the rest of the peoples will loot you—
Because of human bloodshed and violence [y]done to the land,
To the town and all its inhabitants.

9 “Woe to him who makes (BE)evil profit for his household,
To (BF)put his nest on high,
To be saved from the hand of catastrophe!
10 You have planned a (BG)shameful thing for your house
By bringing many peoples to an end;
So you are (BH)sinning against yourself.
11 For the (BI)stone will cry out from the wall,
And the rafter will answer it from the [z]framework.

12 “Woe to him who (BJ)builds a city with bloodshed,
And founds a town with [aa]violence!
13 Is it not indeed from the Lord of armies
That peoples (BK)labor merely for fire,
And nations become weary for nothing?
14 For the earth will be (BL)filled
With the knowledge of the glory of the Lord,
As the waters cover the sea.

15 “Woe to him who makes his neighbor drink;
[ab]To you who mix in your venom even to make your neighbors drunk,
So as to look at their genitalia!
16 You will be filled with disgrace rather than honor.
(BM)Drink, you yourself, and [ac]expose your own foreskin!
The (BN)cup in the Lord’s right hand will come around to you,
And (BO)utter disgrace will come upon your glory.
17 For the (BP)violence [ad]done to Lebanon will [ae]overwhelm you,
And the devastation of its animals [af]by which you terrified them,
(BQ)Because of human bloodshed and (BR)violence [ag]done to the land,
To the town and all its inhabitants.

18 “What (BS)benefit is a carved image when its maker has carved it,
Or a cast metal image, a (BT)teacher of falsehood?
For its maker (BU)trusts in his own handiwork
When he fashions speechless idols.
19 Woe to him who (BV)says to a piece of wood, ‘(BW)Awake!’
To a mute stone, ‘Arise!’
That is your teacher?
Behold, it is overlaid with (BX)gold and silver,
Yet there is (BY)no breath at all inside it.
20 But the (BZ)Lord is in His holy temple.
[ah]Let all the earth (CA)be silent before Him.”

God’s People Saved

2 Lord, I have (CB)heard [aj]the report about You, and [ak]I was (CC)afraid.
Lord, (CD)revive (CE)Your work in the midst of the years,
In the midst of the years make it known.
In anger remember [al](CF)mercy.

3 God comes from (CG)Teman,
And the Holy One from Mount (CH)Paran. Selah
His (CI)splendor covers the heavens,
And the (CJ)earth is full of His praise.
4 His (CK)radiance is like the sunlight;
He has rays flashing from His hand,
And the hiding of His (CL)might is there.

6 He stood and caused the earth to shudder;

El día de la ira de Jehová

1 Palabra de Jehová que vino a Sofonías hijo de Cusi, hijo de Gedalías, hijo de Amarías, hijo de Ezequías, en días de Josías(A) hijo de Amón, rey de Judá.

2 Destruiré por completo todas las cosas de sobre la faz de la tierra, dice Jehová. 3 Destruiré los hombres y las bestias; destruiré las aves del cielo y los peces del mar, y cortaré a los impíos; y raeré a los hombres de sobre la faz de la tierra, dice Jehová. 4 Extenderé mi mano sobre Judá, y sobre todos los habitantes de Jerusalén, y exterminaré de este lugar los restos de Baal, y el nombre de los ministros idólatras con sus sacerdotes; 5 y a los que sobre los terrados se postran al ejército del cielo, y a los que se postran jurando por Jehová y jurando por Milcom; 6 y a los que se apartan de en pos de Jehová, y a los que no buscaron a Jehová, ni le consultaron.

7 Calla en la presencia de Jehová el Señor, porque el día de Jehová está cercano; porque Jehová ha preparado sacrificio, y ha dispuesto a sus convidados. 8 Y en el día del sacrificio de Jehová castigaré a los príncipes, y a los hijos del rey, y a todos los que visten vestido extranjero. 9 Asimismo castigaré en aquel día a todos los que saltan la puerta, los que llenan las casas de sus señores de robo y de engaño.

10 Y habrá en aquel día, dice Jehová, voz de clamor desde la puerta del Pescado, y aullido desde la segunda puerta, y gran quebrantamiento desde los collados. 11 Aullad, habitantes de Mactes, porque todo el pueblo mercader es destruido; destruidos son todos los que traían dinero. 12 Acontecerá en aquel tiempo que yo escudriñaré a Jerusalén con linterna, y castigaré a los hombres que reposan tranquilos como el vino asentado, los cuales dicen en su corazón: Jehová ni hará bien ni hará mal. 13 Por tanto, serán saqueados sus bienes, y sus casas asoladas; edificarán casas, mas no las habitarán, y plantarán viñas, mas no beberán el vino de ellas.

14 Cercano está el día grande de Jehová, cercano y muy próximo; es amarga la voz del día de Jehová; gritará allí el valiente. 15 Día de ira aquel día, día de angustia y de aprieto, día de alboroto y de asolamiento, día de tiniebla y de oscuridad, día de nublado y de entenebrecimiento, 16 día de trompeta y de algazara sobre las ciudades fortificadas, y sobre las altas torres.

17 Y atribularé a los hombres, y andarán como ciegos, porque pecaron contra Jehová; y la sangre de ellos será derramada como polvo, y su carne como estiércol. 18 Ni su plata ni su oro podrá librarlos en el día de la ira de Jehová, pues toda la tierra será consumida con el fuego de su celo; porque ciertamente destrucción apresurada hará de todos los habitantes de la tierra.

Juicios contra las naciones vecinas

2 Congregaos y meditad, oh nación sin pudor, 2 antes que tenga efecto el decreto, y el día se pase como el tamo; antes que venga sobre vosotros el furor de la ira de Jehová, antes que el día de la ira de Jehová venga sobre vosotros. 3 Buscad a Jehová todos los humildes de la tierra, los que pusisteis por obra su juicio; buscad justicia, buscad mansedumbre; quizá seréis guardados en el día del enojo de Jehová. 4 Porque Gaza será desamparada, y Ascalón asolada; saquearán a Asdod en pleno día, y Ecrón será desarraigada.

5 ¡Ay de los que moran en la costa del mar, del pueblo de los cereteos! La palabra de Jehová es contra vosotros, oh Canaán, tierra de los filisteos,(B) y te haré destruir hasta no dejar morador. 6 Y será la costa del mar praderas para pastores, y corrales de ovejas. 7 Será aquel lugar para el remanente de la casa de Judá; allí apacentarán; en las casas de Ascalón dormirán de noche; porque Jehová su Dios los visitará, y levantará su cautiverio.

2 “I will completely (C)remove all things
From the face of the [a]earth,” declares the Lord.
3 “I will remove (D)human and animal life;
I will remove the (E)birds of the sky
And the fish of the sea,
And the [b](F)ruins along with the wicked;
And I will eliminate mankind from the face of the [c]earth,” declares the Lord.
4 “So I will (G)stretch out My hand against Judah
And against all the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
And I will (H)eliminate the remnant of Baal from this place,
And the names of the (I)idolatrous priests along with the other priests.
5 And those who bow down on the (J)housetops to the heavenly [d]lights,
And those who bow down and (K)swear to the Lord, but also swear by [e](L)Milcom,
6 And those who have (M)turned back from following the Lord,
And those who have (N)not sought the Lord nor inquired of Him.”

7 [f](O)Be silent before the Lord [g]God!
For the (P)day of the Lord is near,
Because the Lord has prepared a (Q)sacrifice,
He has (R)consecrated His guests.
8 “Then it will come about on the day of the Lord’s sacrifice
That I will (S)punish the princes, the king’s sons,
And all who clothe themselves with (T)foreign garments.
9 And on that day I will punish all who leap on the temple threshold,
Who fill the house of their [h]lord with (U)violence and deceit.
10 And on that day,” declares the Lord,
“There will be the sound of a cry from the (V)Fish Gate,
Wailing from the [i](W)Second Quarter,
And a loud crash from the (X)hills.
11 Wail, you inhabitants of the [j]Mortar,
Because all the [k]people of (Y)Canaan will be destroyed;
All who weigh out (Z)silver will be eliminated.
12 And it will come about at that time
That I will (AA)search Jerusalem with lamps,
And I will punish the people
Who are [l](AB)stagnant in spirit,
Who say in their hearts,
‘The Lord will (AC)not do good nor harm!’
13 Their wealth will become (AD)plunder,
And their houses desolate;
Yes, (AE)they will build houses but not inhabit them,
And plant vineyards but not drink their wine.”

14 The (AF)great (AG)day of the Lord is near,
Near and coming very quickly;
Listen, the day of the Lord!
[m]In it the warrior (AH)cries out bitterly.
15 That day is a day of anger,
A day of (AI)trouble and distress,
A day of destruction and desolation,
A day of (AJ)darkness and gloom,
A day of clouds and thick darkness,
16 A day of (AK)trumpet and battle cry
Against the (AL)fortified cities
And the high corner towers.
17 I will bring (AM)distress on mankind
So that they will walk (AN)like those who are blind,
Because they have sinned against the Lord;
And their (AO)blood will be poured out like dust,
And their (AP)flesh like dung.
18 Neither their (AQ)silver nor their gold
Will be able to save them
On the day of the Lord’s anger;
And (AR)all the earth will be devoured
By the fire of His jealousy,
For He will (AS)make a complete end,
Indeed a horrifying one,
Of all the inhabitants of the earth.

Judgments on Judah’s Enemies

2 Gather yourselves together, yes, (AT)join together,
You nation (AU)without [n]shame,
2 Before the decree [o]takes effect—
The day passes (AV)like chaff—
Before the (AW)burning anger of the Lord comes upon you,
Before the (AX)day of the Lord’s anger comes upon you.
3 (AY)Seek the Lord,
All you (AZ)humble of the [p]earth
Who have practiced His [q]ordinances;
(BA)Seek righteousness, seek humility.
Perhaps you will (BB)remain hidden
On the day of the Lord’s anger.

4 For (BC)Gaza will be abandoned,
And Ashkelon will become a desolation;
The inhabitants of (BD)Ashdod will be driven out at noon,
And (BE)Ekron will be uprooted.
5 Woe to the inhabitants of the seacoast,
The nation of the [r](BF)Cherethites!
The word of the Lord is (BG)against you,
(BH)Canaan, land of the Philistines;
And I will (BI)eliminate you
So that there will be (BJ)no inhabitant.
6 So the seacoast will become (BK)grazing places,
With pastures for shepherds and folds for flocks.
7 And the coast will be
For the (BL)remnant of the house of Judah,
They will (BM)drive sheep to pasture on it.
In the houses of Ashkelon they will lie down at evening;
For the Lord their God will (BN)care for them
And (BO)restore their fortunes.
