Adam and Eve

This is the account(A) of the heavens and the earth when they were created,(B) when the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.

Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earth[a] and no plant had yet sprung up,(C) for the Lord God had not sent rain on the earth(D) and there was no one to work the ground, but streams[b] came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground. Then the Lord God formed(E) a man[c](F) from the dust(G) of the ground(H) and breathed into his nostrils the breath(I) of life,(J) and the man became a living being.(K)

Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden;(L) and there he put the man he had formed. The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees(M) that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life(N) and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.(O)

10 A river(P) watering the garden flowed from Eden;(Q) from there it was separated into four headwaters.

  3. Genesis 2:7 The Hebrew for man (adam) sounds like and may be related to the Hebrew for ground (adamah); it is also the name Adam (see verse 20).

15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden(A) to work it and take care of it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden;(B) 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil,(C) for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”(D)

18 The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”(E)

19 Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals(F) and all the birds in the sky.(G) He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called(H) each living creature,(I) that was its name. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals.

But for Adam[a] no suitable helper(J) was found. 21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep;(K) and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs[b] and then closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib[c](L) he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.

44 it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body.(A)

If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. 45 So it is written: “The first man Adam became a living being”[a];(B) the last Adam,(C) a life-giving spirit.(D) 46 The spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and after that the spiritual.(E) 47 The first man was of the dust of the earth;(F) the second man is of heaven.(G) 48 As was the earthly man, so are those who are of the earth; and as is the heavenly man, so also are those who are of heaven.(H) 49 And just as we have borne the image of the earthly man,(I) so shall we[b] bear the image of the heavenly man.(J)

50 I declare to you, brothers and sisters, that flesh and blood(K) cannot inherit the kingdom of God,(L) nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable.(M)
