Isaac en Gerar

26 Después hubo hambre en la tierra, además de la primera hambre que hubo en los días de Abraham; y se fue Isaac a Abimelec rey de los filisteos, en Gerar. 2 Y se le apareció Jehová, y le dijo: No desciendas a Egipto; habita en la tierra que yo te diré. 3 Habita como forastero en esta tierra, y estaré contigo, y te bendeciré; porque a ti y a tu descendencia daré todas estas tierras, y confirmaré el juramento que hice a Abraham tu padre. 4 Multiplicaré tu descendencia como las estrellas del cielo, y daré a tu descendencia todas estas tierras; y todas las naciones de la tierra serán benditas en tu simiente,(A) 5 por cuanto oyó Abraham mi voz, y guardó mi precepto, mis mandamientos, mis estatutos y mis leyes.

6 Habitó, pues, Isaac en Gerar. 7 Y los hombres de aquel lugar le preguntaron acerca de su mujer; y él respondió: Es mi hermana;(B) porque tuvo miedo de decir: Es mi mujer; pensando que tal vez los hombres del lugar lo matarían por causa de Rebeca, pues ella era de hermoso aspecto. 8 Sucedió que después que él estuvo allí muchos días, Abimelec, rey de los filisteos, mirando por una ventana, vio a Isaac que acariciaba a Rebeca su mujer. 9 Y llamó Abimelec a Isaac, y dijo: He aquí ella es de cierto tu mujer. ¿Cómo, pues, dijiste: Es mi hermana? E Isaac le respondió: Porque dije: Quizá moriré por causa de ella. 10 Y Abimelec dijo: ¿Por qué nos has hecho esto? Por poco hubiera dormido alguno del pueblo con tu mujer, y hubieras traído sobre nosotros el pecado. 11 Entonces Abimelec mandó a todo el pueblo, diciendo: El que tocare a este hombre o a su mujer, de cierto morirá.

12 Y sembró Isaac en aquella tierra, y cosechó aquel año ciento por uno; y le bendijo Jehová. 13 El varón se enriqueció, y fue prosperado, y se engrandeció hasta hacerse muy poderoso. 14 Y tuvo hato de ovejas, y hato de vacas, y mucha labranza; y los filisteos le tuvieron envidia. 15 Y todos los pozos que habían abierto los criados de Abraham su padre en sus días, los filisteos los habían cegado y llenado de tierra. 16 Entonces dijo Abimelec a Isaac: Apártate de nosotros, porque mucho más poderoso que nosotros te has hecho.

17 E Isaac se fue de allí, y acampó en el valle de Gerar, y habitó allí. 18 Y volvió a abrir Isaac los pozos de agua que habían abierto en los días de Abraham su padre, y que los filisteos habían cegado después de la muerte de Abraham; y los llamó por los nombres que su padre los había llamado. 19 Pero cuando los siervos de Isaac cavaron en el valle, y hallaron allí un pozo de aguas vivas, 20 los pastores de Gerar riñeron con los pastores de Isaac, diciendo: El agua es nuestra. Por eso llamó el nombre del pozo Esek,[a] porque habían altercado con él. 21 Y abrieron otro pozo, y también riñeron sobre él; y llamó su nombre Sitna.[b] 22 Y se apartó de allí, y abrió otro pozo, y no riñeron sobre él; y llamó su nombre Rehobot,[c] y dijo: Porque ahora Jehová nos ha prosperado, y fructificaremos en la tierra.

23 Y de allí subió a Beerseba. 24 Y se le apareció Jehová aquella noche, y le dijo: Yo soy el Dios de Abraham tu padre; no temas, porque yo estoy contigo, y te bendeciré, y multiplicaré tu descendencia por amor de Abraham mi siervo. 25 Y edificó allí un altar, e invocó el nombre de Jehová, y plantó allí su tienda; y abrieron allí los siervos de Isaac un pozo.

26 Y Abimelec(C) vino a él desde Gerar, y Ahuzat, amigo suyo, y Ficol, capitán de su ejército. 27 Y les dijo Isaac: ¿Por qué venís a mí, pues que me habéis aborrecido, y me echasteis de entre vosotros? 28 Y ellos respondieron: Hemos visto que Jehová está contigo; y dijimos: Haya ahora juramento entre nosotros, entre tú y nosotros, y haremos pacto contigo, 29 que no nos hagas mal, como nosotros no te hemos tocado, y como solamente te hemos hecho bien, y te enviamos en paz; tú eres ahora bendito de Jehová. 30 Entonces él les hizo banquete, y comieron y bebieron. 31 Y se levantaron de madrugada, y juraron el uno al otro; e Isaac los despidió, y ellos se despidieron de él en paz. 32 En aquel día sucedió que vinieron los criados de Isaac, y le dieron nuevas acerca del pozo que habían abierto, y le dijeron: Hemos hallado agua. 33 Y lo llamó Seba; por esta causa el nombre de aquella ciudad es Beerseba hasta este día.

34 Y cuando Esaú era de cuarenta años, tomó por mujer a Judit hija de Beeri heteo, y a Basemat hija de Elón heteo; 35 y fueron amargura de espíritu para Isaac y para Rebeca.

Jacob obtiene la bendición de Isaac

27 Aconteció que cuando Isaac envejeció, y sus ojos se oscurecieron quedando sin vista, llamó a Esaú su hijo mayor, y le dijo: Hijo mío. Y él respondió: Heme aquí. 2 Y él dijo: He aquí ya soy viejo, no sé el día de mi muerte. 3 Toma, pues, ahora tus armas, tu aljaba y tu arco, y sal al campo y tráeme caza; 4 y hazme un guisado como a mí me gusta, y tráemelo, y comeré, para que yo te bendiga antes que muera. 5 Y Rebeca estaba oyendo, cuando hablaba Isaac a Esaú su hijo; y se fue Esaú al campo para buscar la caza que había de traer.

6 Entonces Rebeca habló a Jacob su hijo, diciendo: He aquí yo he oído a tu padre que hablaba con Esaú tu hermano, diciendo: 7 Tráeme caza y hazme un guisado, para que coma, y te bendiga en presencia de Jehová antes que yo muera. 8 Ahora, pues, hijo mío, obedece a mi voz en lo que te mando. 9 Ve ahora al ganado, y tráeme de allí dos buenos cabritos de las cabras, y haré de ellos viandas para tu padre, como a él le gusta; 10 y tú las llevarás a tu padre, y comerá, para que él te bendiga antes de su muerte. 11 Y Jacob dijo a Rebeca su madre: He aquí, Esaú mi hermano es hombre velloso, y yo lampiño. 12 Quizá me palpará mi padre, y me tendrá por burlador, y traeré sobre mí maldición y no bendición. 13 Y su madre respondió: Hijo mío, sea sobre mí tu maldición; solamente obedece a mi voz y ve y tráemelos. 14 Entonces él fue y los tomó, y los trajo a su madre; y su madre hizo guisados, como a su padre le gustaba. 15 Y tomó Rebeca los vestidos de Esaú su hijo mayor, los preciosos, que ella tenía en casa, y vistió a Jacob su hijo menor; 16 y cubrió sus manos y la parte de su cuello donde no tenía vello, con las pieles de los cabritos; 17 y entregó los guisados y el pan que había preparado, en manos de Jacob su hijo.

18 Entonces este fue a su padre y dijo: Padre mío. E Isaac respondió: Heme aquí; ¿quién eres, hijo mío? 19 Y Jacob dijo a su padre: Yo soy Esaú tu primogénito; he hecho como me dijiste: levántate ahora, y siéntate, y come de mi caza, para que me bendigas. 20 Entonces Isaac dijo a su hijo: ¿Cómo es que la hallaste tan pronto, hijo mío? Y él respondió: Porque Jehová tu Dios hizo que la encontrase delante de mí. 21 E Isaac dijo a Jacob: Acércate ahora, y te palparé, hijo mío, por si eres mi hijo Esaú o no. 22 Y se acercó Jacob a su padre Isaac, quien le palpó, y dijo: La voz es la voz de Jacob, pero las manos, las manos de Esaú. 23 Y no le conoció, porque sus manos eran vellosas como las manos de Esaú; y le bendijo. 24 Y dijo: ¿Eres tú mi hijo Esaú? Y Jacob respondió: Yo soy. 25 Dijo también: Acércamela, y comeré de la caza de mi hijo, para que yo te bendiga; y Jacob se la acercó, e Isaac comió; le trajo también vino, y bebió. 26 Y le dijo Isaac su padre: Acércate ahora, y bésame, hijo mío. 27 Y Jacob se acercó, y le besó; y olió Isaac el olor de sus vestidos, y le bendijo, diciendo:

Mira, el olor de mi hijo,

Como el olor del campo que Jehová ha bendecido;

28 Dios, pues, te dé del rocío del cielo,

Y de las grosuras de la tierra,

Y abundancia de trigo y de mosto.

29 Sírvante pueblos,

Y naciones se inclinen a ti;

Sé señor de tus hermanos,

Y se inclinen ante ti los hijos de tu madre.

Malditos los que te maldijeren,

Y benditos los que te bendijeren.(D)(E)

30 Y aconteció, luego que Isaac acabó de bendecir a Jacob, y apenas había salido Jacob de delante de Isaac su padre, que Esaú su hermano volvió de cazar. 31 E hizo él también guisados, y se los llevó a su padre, y le dijo: Levántese mi padre, y coma de la caza de su hijo, para que me bendiga. 32 Entonces Isaac su padre le dijo: ¿Quién eres tú? Y él le dijo: Yo soy tu hijo, tu primogénito, Esaú. 33 Y se estremeció Isaac grandemente, y dijo: ¿Quién es el que vino aquí, que trajo caza, y me dio, y comí de todo antes que tú vinieses? Yo le bendije, y será bendito. 34 Cuando Esaú oyó las palabras de su padre, clamó con una muy grande y muy amarga exclamación, y le dijo: Bendíceme también a mí, padre mío. 35 Y él dijo: Vino tu hermano con engaño, y tomó tu bendición. 36 Y Esaú respondió: Bien llamaron su nombre Jacob, pues ya me ha suplantado dos veces: se apoderó de mi primogenitura,(F) y he aquí ahora ha tomado mi bendición. Y dijo: ¿No has guardado bendición para mí? 37 Isaac respondió y dijo a Esaú: He aquí yo le he puesto por señor tuyo, y le he dado por siervos a todos sus hermanos; de trigo y de vino le he provisto; ¿qué, pues, te haré a ti ahora, hijo mío? 38 Y Esaú respondió a su padre: ¿No tienes más que una sola bendición, padre mío? Bendíceme también a mí, padre mío. Y alzó Esaú su voz, y lloró.(G)

39 Entonces Isaac su padre habló y le dijo:

He aquí, será tu habitación en grosuras de la tierra,

Y del rocío de los cielos de arriba;

40 Y por tu espada vivirás, y a tu hermano servirás;

Y sucederá cuando te fortalezcas,

Que descargarás su yugo de tu cerviz.(H)(I)

Jacob huye de Esaú

41 Y aborreció Esaú a Jacob por la bendición con que su padre le había bendecido, y dijo en su corazón: Llegarán los días del luto de mi padre, y yo mataré a mi hermano Jacob. 42 Y fueron dichas a Rebeca las palabras de Esaú su hijo mayor; y ella envió y llamó a Jacob su hijo menor, y le dijo: He aquí, Esaú tu hermano se consuela acerca de ti con la idea de matarte. 43 Ahora pues, hijo mío, obedece a mi voz; levántate y huye a casa de Labán mi hermano en Harán, 44 y mora con él algunos días, hasta que el enojo de tu hermano se mitigue; 45 hasta que se aplaque la ira de tu hermano contra ti, y olvide lo que le has hecho; yo enviaré entonces, y te traeré de allá. ¿Por qué seré privada de vosotros ambos en un día? 46 Y dijo Rebeca a Isaac: Fastidio tengo de mi vida, a causa de las hijas de Het. Si Jacob toma mujer de las hijas de Het, como estas, de las hijas de esta tierra, ¿para qué quiero la vida?

28 Entonces Isaac llamó a Jacob, y lo bendijo, y le mandó diciendo: No tomes mujer de las hijas de Canaán. 2 Levántate, ve a Padan-aram, a casa de Betuel, padre de tu madre, y toma allí mujer de las hijas de Labán, hermano de tu madre. 3 Y el Dios omnipotente te bendiga, y te haga fructificar y te multiplique, hasta llegar a ser multitud de pueblos; 4 y te dé la bendición de Abraham,(J) y a tu descendencia contigo, para que heredes la tierra en que moras, que Dios dio a Abraham. 5 Así envió Isaac a Jacob, el cual fue a Padan-aram, a Labán hijo de Betuel arameo, hermano de Rebeca madre de Jacob y de Esaú.

6 Y vio Esaú cómo Isaac había bendecido a Jacob, y le había enviado a Padan-aram, para tomar para sí mujer de allí; y que cuando le bendijo, le había mandado diciendo: No tomarás mujer de las hijas de Canaán; 7 y que Jacob había obedecido a su padre y a su madre, y se había ido a Padan-aram. 8 Vio asimismo Esaú que las hijas de Canaán parecían mal a Isaac su padre; 9 y se fue Esaú a Ismael, y tomó para sí por mujer a Mahalat, hija de Ismael hijo de Abraham, hermana de Nebaiot, además de sus otras mujeres.

Dios se aparece a Jacob en Bet-el

10 Salió, pues, Jacob de Beerseba, y fue a Harán. 11 Y llegó a un cierto lugar, y durmió allí, porque ya el sol se había puesto; y tomó de las piedras de aquel paraje y puso a su cabecera, y se acostó en aquel lugar. 12 Y soñó: y he aquí una escalera que estaba apoyada en tierra, y su extremo tocaba en el cielo; y he aquí ángeles de Dios que subían y descendían por ella.(K) 13 Y he aquí, Jehová estaba en lo alto de ella, el cual dijo: Yo soy Jehová, el Dios de Abraham tu padre, y el Dios de Isaac; la tierra en que estás acostado te la daré a ti y a tu descendencia.(L) 14 Será tu descendencia como el polvo de la tierra, y te extenderás al occidente, al oriente, al norte y al sur; y todas las familias de la tierra serán benditas en ti y en tu simiente.(M) 15 He aquí, yo estoy contigo, y te guardaré por dondequiera que fueres, y volveré a traerte a esta tierra; porque no te dejaré hasta que haya hecho lo que te he dicho. 16 Y despertó Jacob de su sueño, y dijo: Ciertamente Jehová está en este lugar, y yo no lo sabía. 17 Y tuvo miedo, y dijo: ¡Cuán terrible es este lugar! No es otra cosa que casa de Dios, y puerta del cielo.

18 Y se levantó Jacob de mañana, y tomó la piedra que había puesto de cabecera, y la alzó por señal, y derramó aceite encima de ella. 19 Y llamó el nombre de aquel lugar Bet-el,[d] aunque Luz[e] era el nombre de la ciudad primero. 20 E hizo Jacob voto, diciendo: Si fuere Dios conmigo, y me guardare en este viaje en que voy, y me diere pan para comer y vestido para vestir, 21 y si volviere en paz a casa de mi padre, Jehová será mi Dios. 22 Y esta piedra que he puesto por señal, será casa de Dios; y de todo lo que me dieres, el diezmo apartaré para ti.

Isaac Settles in Gerar

26 Now there was (A)a famine in the land, besides the previous famine that had occurred in the days of Abraham. So Isaac went to Gerar, to (B)Abimelech king of the Philistines. 2 And the Lord (C)appeared to him and said, “Do not go down to Egypt; (D)stay in the land of which I shall tell you. 3 Live for a time in this land and (E)I will be with you and (F)bless you, for (G)to you and to your [a]descendants I will give all these lands, and I will establish (H)the oath which I swore to your father Abraham. 4 (I)I will multiply your [b]descendants as the stars of heaven, and will give your [c]descendants all these lands; and (J)by your [d]descendants all the nations of the earth [e]shall be blessed, 5 because Abraham [f](K)obeyed Me and fulfilled his duty to Me, and kept My commandments, My statutes, and My laws.”

6 So Isaac lived in Gerar. 7 When the men of the place asked about his wife, he said, “(L)She is my sister,” for he was (M)afraid to say, “my wife,” thinking, “[g]the men of the place might kill me on account of Rebekah, since she is (N)beautiful.” 8 Now it came about, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked down through a window, and saw them, and behold, Isaac was caressing his wife Rebekah. 9 Then Abimelech called Isaac and said, “Behold, she certainly is your wife! So how is it that you said, ‘She is my sister’?” And Isaac said to him, “Because I thought, ‘otherwise I might be killed on account of her.’” 10 And (O)Abimelech said, “What is this that you have done to us? One of the people might easily have slept with your wife, and you would have brought guilt upon us.” 11 So Abimelech commanded all the people, saying, “He who (P)touches this man or his wife will certainly be put to death.”

12 Now Isaac sowed in that land and [h]reaped in the same year a hundred times as much. And (Q)the Lord blessed him, 13 and the man (R)became rich, and continued to grow [i]richer until he became very [j]wealthy; 14 for (S)he had possessions of flocks [k]and herds, and a great household, so that the Philistines envied him. 15 Now (T)all the wells which his father’s servants had dug in the days of his father Abraham, the Philistines stopped up [l]by filling them with dirt. 16 Then Abimelech said to Isaac, “Go away from us, for you are [m](U)too powerful for us.” 17 So Isaac departed from there and camped in the Valley of Gerar, and [n]settled there.

Argument over the Wells

18 Then Isaac dug again the wells of water which [o]had been dug in the days of his father Abraham, for the Philistines had stopped them up after the death of Abraham; and he [p]gave them the same names which his father had [q]given them. 19 But when Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and found there a well of [r]flowing water, 20 the herdsmen of Gerar (V)quarreled with the herdsmen of Isaac, saying, “The water is ours!” So he named the well [s]Esek, because they argued with him. 21 Then they dug another well, and they quarreled over it too, so he named it [t]Sitnah. 22 Then he moved away from there and dug another well, and they did not quarrel over it; so he named it [u]Rehoboth, for he said, “[v](W)At last the Lord has made [w]room for us, and we will be (X)fruitful in the land.”

23 And he went up from there to (Y)Beersheba. 24 And the Lord (Z)appeared to him the same night and said,

“(AA)I am the God of your father Abraham;
(AB)Do not fear, for I am with you.
I (AC)will bless you and multiply your [x]descendants,
For the sake of My servant Abraham.”

25 So he built an (AD)altar there and called upon the name of the Lord, and pitched his tent there; and there Isaac’s servants dug a well.

Covenant with Abimelech

26 Then (AE)Abimelech came to him from Gerar [y]with his adviser Ahuzzath, and Phicol the commander of his army. 27 Isaac said to them, “(AF)Why have you come to me, since you hate me and have sent me away from you?” 28 They said, “We have seen plainly (AG)that the Lord has been with you; so we said, ‘An oath must now be taken [z]by us,’ that is, [aa]by you and us. So let us make a covenant with you, 29 that you will do us no harm, just as we have not touched you [ab]and have done to you nothing but good, and have sent you away in peace. You are now the (AH)blessed of the Lord.” 30 Then (AI)he made them a feast, and they ate and drank. 31 In the morning they got up early and [ac](AJ)exchanged oaths; then Isaac sent them away, and they left him in peace. 32 Now it came about on the same day, that Isaac’s servants came in and told him about the well which they had dug, and said to him, “We have found water.” 33 So he called it [ad]Shibah; therefore the name of the city is (AK)Beersheba to this day.

34 When Esau was forty years old (AL)he [ae]married Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite; 35 and (AM)they [af]brought grief to Isaac and Rebekah.

Jacob’s Deception

27 Now it came about, when Isaac was old and (AN)his eyes were too dim to see, that he called his (AO)older son Esau and said to him, “My son.” And he said to him, “Here I am.” 2 Then [ag](AP)Isaac said, “Behold now, I am old and I do not know the day of my death. 3 Now then, please take your gear, your quiver and your bow, and go out to the field and (AQ)hunt game for me; 4 and prepare a delicious meal for me such as I love, and bring it to me that I may eat, so that (AR)my soul may bless you before I die.”

5 Now Rebekah was listening while Isaac spoke to his son Esau. So when Esau went to the field to hunt for game to bring home, 6 (AS)Rebekah said to her son Jacob, “Behold, I heard your father speak to your brother Esau, saying, 7 ‘Bring me some game and prepare a delicious meal for me, so that I may eat, and bless you in the presence of the Lord before my death.’ 8 So now, my son, (AT)listen to [ah]me [ai]as I command you. 9 Go now to the flock and [aj]bring me two choice [ak]young goats from there, so that I may prepare them as a delicious meal for your father, such as he loves. 10 Then you shall bring it to your father, that he may eat, so that he may bless you before his death.” 11 But Jacob said to his mother Rebekah, “Behold, my brother Esau is a (AU)hairy man and I am a smooth man. 12 (AV)Perhaps my father will touch me, then I will be like a [al]deceiver in his sight, and I will bring upon myself a curse and not a blessing.” 13 But his mother said to him, “Your curse be on me, my son; only (AW)obey my voice, and go, get the goats for me.” 14 So he went and got them, and brought them to his mother; and his mother made a delicious meal such as his father loved. 15 Then Rebekah took the [am]best (AX)garments of her elder son Esau, which were with her in the house, and put them on her younger son Jacob. 16 And she put the skins of the [an]young goats on his hands and on the smooth part of his neck. 17 She also gave the delicious meal and the bread which she had made [ao]to her son Jacob.

18 Then he came to his father and said, “My father.” And he said, “Here I am. Who are you, my son?” 19 Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn; I have done as you told me. (AY)Come now, sit and eat of my game, so that [ap](AZ)you may bless me.” 20 Isaac said to his son, “How is it that you have it so quickly, my son?” And he said, “(BA)Because the Lord your God made it [aq]come to me.” 21 Then Isaac said to Jacob, “Please come close, so that (BB)I may feel you, my son, whether you are really my son Esau or not.” 22 So Jacob came close to his father Isaac, and he touched him and said, “The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau.” 23 And he did not recognize him, because his hands were (BC)hairy like his brother Esau’s hands; so he blessed him. 24 And he said, “Are you really my son Esau?” And he said, “I am.” 25 So he said, “Bring it to me, and I will eat of my son’s game, that [ar](BD)I may bless you.” And he brought it to him, and he ate; he also brought him wine and he drank. 26 Then his father Isaac said to him, “Please come close and kiss me, my son.” 27 So he came close and kissed him; and when he smelled the smell of his garments, he (BE)blessed him and said,

“See, (BF)the smell of my son
Is like the smell of a field (BG)which the Lord has blessed;
28 Now may (BH)God give you of the dew of heaven,
And of the (BI)fatness of the earth,
And an abundance of grain and new wine;
29 (BJ)May peoples serve you,
And nations bow down to you;
(BK)Be master of your brothers,
(BL)And may your mother’s sons bow down to you.
(BM)Cursed be those who curse you,
And blessed be those who bless you.”

The Stolen Blessing

30 Now it came about, as soon as Isaac had finished blessing Jacob, and Jacob had hardly gone out from the presence of his father Isaac, that his brother Esau came in from his hunting. 31 Then he also made a delicious meal, and brought it to his father; and he said to his father, “(BN)Let my father arise and eat of his son’s game, that [as](BO)you may bless me.” 32 His father Isaac said to him, “(BP)Who are you?” And he said, “I am your son, (BQ)your firstborn, Esau.” 33 Then Isaac [at]trembled violently, and said, “(BR)Who then was he who hunted game and brought it to me, so that I ate from all of it before you came, and blessed him? (BS)Yes, and he shall be blessed.” 34 When Esau heard the words of his father, (BT)he cried out with an exceedingly great and bitter cry, and said to his father, “Bless me, me as well, my father!” 35 And he said, “(BU)Your brother came deceitfully and has taken away your blessing.” 36 Then Esau said, “[au]Is he not rightly named (BV)[av]Jacob, for he has betrayed me these two times? He took away my birthright, and behold, now he has taken away my blessing.” And he said, “Have you not reserved a blessing for me?” 37 But Isaac replied to Esau, “Behold, I have made him (BW)your master, and I have given to him all his relatives [aw]as servants; and with grain and new wine I have sustained him. What then can I do for you, my son?” 38 Esau said to his father, “Do you have only one blessing, my father? Bless me, me as well, my father.” So Esau raised his voice and (BX)wept.

39 Then (BY)his father Isaac answered and said to him,

“Behold, [ax](BZ)away from the [ay]fertility of the earth shall be your dwelling,
And [az]away from the dew of heaven from above.
40 And by your sword you shall live,
And (CA)you shall serve your brother;
But it shall come about (CB)when you become restless,
That you will [ba]break his yoke from your neck.”

41 So Esau (CC)held a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing with which his father had blessed him; and Esau said [bb]to himself, “(CD)The days of mourning for my father are near; then I will kill my brother Jacob.” 42 Now when the words of her elder son Esau were reported to Rebekah, she sent word and called her younger son Jacob, and said to him, “Behold your brother Esau is consoling himself concerning you by planning to kill you. 43 Now then, my son, (CE)obey my voice, and arise, [bc]flee to (CF)Haran, to my brother (CG)Laban! 44 Stay with him (CH)a few days, until your brother’s fury [bd]subsides, 45 until your brother’s anger [be]against you subsides and he forgets (CI)what you did to him. Then I will send word and get you from there. Why should I lose you both in one day?”

46 And Rebekah said to Isaac, “I am tired of [bf]living because of (CJ)the daughters of Heth; (CK)if Jacob takes a wife from the daughters of Heth like these from the daughters of the land, what good will my life be to me?”

Jacob Is Sent Away

28 So Isaac called Jacob and (CL)blessed him and commanded him, [bg]saying to him, “(CM)You shall not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan. 2 Arise, go to Paddan-aram, to the house of (CN)Bethuel your mother’s father; and from there take to yourself a wife from the daughters of Laban, your mother’s brother. 3 May [bh](CO)God Almighty (CP)bless you and (CQ)make you fruitful and (CR)multiply you, so that you may become a (CS)multitude of peoples. 4 May He also give you the (CT)blessing of Abraham, to you and to your [bi]descendants with you, so that you may (CU)possess the land where you (CV)live as a stranger, which God gave to Abraham.” 5 Then (CW)Isaac sent Jacob away, and he went to Paddan-aram to Laban, son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, the mother of Jacob and Esau.

6 Now Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him away to Paddan-aram to take to himself a wife from there, and that when he blessed him he commanded him, saying, “(CX)You shall not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan,” 7 and that Jacob had obeyed his father and his mother and had gone to Paddan-aram. 8 So Esau saw that (CY)the daughters of Canaan displeased [bj]his father Isaac; 9 and Esau went to Ishmael, and [bk]married, (CZ)besides the wives that he had, Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, the sister of Nebaioth.

Jacob’s Dream

10 Then Jacob departed from (DA)Beersheba and went toward (DB)Haran. 11 And he [bl]happened upon a [bm](DC)particular place and spent the night there, because the sun had set; and he took one of the stones of the place and made it a support for his head, and lay down in that place. 12 And (DD)he had a dream, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth with its top reaching to heaven; and behold, (DE)the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. 13 Then behold, (DF)the Lord was standing [bn]above it and said, “I am the Lord, (DG)the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give (DH)to you and to (DI)your [bo]descendants. 14 Your [bp]descendants will also be like (DJ)the dust of the earth, and you will [bq]spread out (DK)to the west and to the east, and to the north and to the south; and (DL)in you and in your [br]descendants shall all the families of the earth be blessed. 15 Behold, (DM)I am with you and (DN)will keep you wherever you go, and (DO)will bring you back to this land; for (DP)I will not leave you until I have done what I have [bs]promised you.” 16 Then Jacob (DQ)awoke from his sleep and said, “(DR)The Lord is certainly in this place, and I did not know it!” 17 And he was afraid and said, “(DS)How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven!”

18 So Jacob got up early in the morning, and took (DT)the stone that he had placed as a support for his head, and set it up as a memorial stone, and poured oil on its top. 19 Then he named that place [bt](DU)Bethel; but [bu]previously the name of the city had been (DV)Luz. 20 Jacob also (DW)made a vow, saying, “(DX)If God will be with me and will keep me on this journey that I [bv]take, and give me [bw](DY)food to eat and garments to wear, 21 and (DZ)I return to my father’s house in [bx]safety, (EA)then the Lord will be my God. 22 And this stone, which I have set up as a memorial stone, (EB)will be God’s house, and (EC)of everything that You give me I will assuredly give a tenth to You.”
