Muerte y sepultura de Sara

23 Fue la vida de Sara ciento veintisiete años; tantos fueron los años de la vida de Sara. 2 Y murió Sara en Quiriat-arba, que es Hebrón, en la tierra de Canaán; y vino Abraham a hacer duelo por Sara, y a llorarla. 3 Y se levantó Abraham de delante de su muerta, y habló a los hijos de Het, diciendo: 4 Extranjero y forastero soy entre vosotros;(A) dadme propiedad para sepultura entre vosotros,(B) y sepultaré mi muerta de delante de mí. 5 Y respondieron los hijos de Het a Abraham, y le dijeron: 6 Óyenos, señor nuestro; eres un príncipe de Dios entre nosotros; en lo mejor de nuestros sepulcros sepulta a tu muerta; ninguno de nosotros te negará su sepulcro, ni te impedirá que entierres tu muerta. 7 Y Abraham se levantó, y se inclinó al pueblo de aquella tierra, a los hijos de Het, 8 y habló con ellos, diciendo: Si tenéis voluntad de que yo sepulte mi muerta de delante de mí, oídme, e interceded por mí con Efrón hijo de Zohar, 9 para que me dé la cueva de Macpela, que tiene al extremo de su heredad; que por su justo precio me la dé, para posesión de sepultura en medio de vosotros. 10 Este Efrón estaba entre los hijos de Het; y respondió Efrón heteo a Abraham, en presencia de los hijos de Het, de todos los que entraban por la puerta de su ciudad, diciendo: 11 No, señor mío, óyeme: te doy la heredad, y te doy también la cueva que está en ella; en presencia de los hijos de mi pueblo te la doy; sepulta tu muerta. 12 Entonces Abraham se inclinó delante del pueblo de la tierra, 13 y respondió a Efrón en presencia del pueblo de la tierra, diciendo: Antes, si te place, te ruego que me oigas. Yo daré el precio de la heredad; tómalo de mí, y sepultaré en ella mi muerta. 14 Respondió Efrón a Abraham, diciéndole: 15 Señor mío, escúchame: la tierra vale cuatrocientos siclos de plata; ¿qué es esto entre tú y yo? Entierra, pues, tu muerta. 16 Entonces Abraham se convino con Efrón, y pesó Abraham a Efrón el dinero que dijo, en presencia de los hijos de Het, cuatrocientos siclos de plata, de buena ley entre mercaderes.

17 Y quedó la heredad de Efrón que estaba en Macpela al oriente de Mamre, la heredad con la cueva que estaba en ella, y todos los árboles que había en la heredad, y en todos sus contornos, 18 como propiedad de Abraham, en presencia de los hijos de Het y de todos los que entraban por la puerta de la ciudad. 19 Después de esto sepultó Abraham a Sara su mujer en la cueva de la heredad de Macpela al oriente de Mamre, que es Hebrón, en la tierra de Canaán. 20 Y quedó la heredad y la cueva que en ella había, de Abraham, como una posesión para sepultura, recibida de los hijos de Het.

Abraham busca esposa para Isaac

24 Era Abraham ya viejo, y bien avanzado en años; y Jehová había bendecido a Abraham en todo. 2 Y dijo Abraham a un criado suyo, el más viejo de su casa, que era el que gobernaba en todo lo que tenía: Pon ahora tu mano debajo de mi muslo, 3 y te juramentaré por Jehová, Dios de los cielos y Dios de la tierra, que no tomarás para mi hijo mujer de las hijas de los cananeos, entre los cuales yo habito; 4 sino que irás a mi tierra y a mi parentela, y tomarás mujer para mi hijo Isaac. 5 El criado le respondió: Quizá la mujer no querrá venir en pos de mí a esta tierra. ¿Volveré, pues, tu hijo a la tierra de donde saliste? 6 Y Abraham le dijo: Guárdate que no vuelvas a mi hijo allá. 7 Jehová, Dios de los cielos, que me tomó de la casa de mi padre y de la tierra de mi parentela, y me habló y me juró, diciendo: A tu descendencia daré esta tierra; él enviará su ángel delante de ti, y tú traerás de allá mujer para mi hijo. 8 Y si la mujer no quisiere venir en pos de ti, serás libre de este mi juramento; solamente que no vuelvas allá a mi hijo. 9 Entonces el criado puso su mano debajo del muslo de Abraham su señor, y le juró sobre este negocio.

10 Y el criado tomó diez camellos de los camellos de su señor, y se fue, tomando toda clase de regalos escogidos de su señor; y puesto en camino, llegó a Mesopotamia, a la ciudad de Nacor. 11 E hizo arrodillar los camellos fuera de la ciudad, junto a un pozo de agua, a la hora de la tarde, la hora en que salen las doncellas por agua. 12 Y dijo: Oh Jehová, Dios de mi señor Abraham, dame, te ruego, el tener hoy buen encuentro, y haz misericordia con mi señor Abraham. 13 He aquí yo estoy junto a la fuente de agua, y las hijas de los varones de esta ciudad salen por agua. 14 Sea, pues, que la doncella a quien yo dijere: Baja tu cántaro, te ruego, para que yo beba, y ella respondiere: Bebe, y también daré de beber a tus camellos; que sea esta la que tú has destinado para tu siervo Isaac; y en esto conoceré que habrás hecho misericordia con mi señor.

15 Y aconteció que antes que él acabase de hablar, he aquí Rebeca, que había nacido a Betuel, hijo de Milca mujer de Nacor hermano de Abraham, la cual salía con su cántaro sobre su hombro. 16 Y la doncella era de aspecto muy hermoso, virgen, a la que varón no había conocido; la cual descendió a la fuente, y llenó su cántaro, y se volvía. 17 Entonces el criado corrió hacia ella, y dijo: Te ruego que me des a beber un poco de agua de tu cántaro. 18 Ella respondió: Bebe, señor mío; y se dio prisa a bajar su cántaro sobre su mano, y le dio a beber. 19 Y cuando acabó de darle de beber, dijo: También para tus camellos sacaré agua, hasta que acaben de beber. 20 Y se dio prisa, y vació su cántaro en la pila, y corrió otra vez al pozo para sacar agua, y sacó para todos sus camellos. 21 Y el hombre estaba maravillado de ella, callando, para saber si Jehová había prosperado su viaje, o no. 22 Y cuando los camellos acabaron de beber, le dio el hombre un pendiente de oro que pesaba medio siclo, y dos brazaletes que pesaban diez, 23 y dijo: ¿De quién eres hija? Te ruego que me digas: ¿hay en casa de tu padre lugar donde posemos? 24 Y ella respondió: Soy hija de Betuel hijo de Milca, el cual ella dio a luz a Nacor. 25 Y añadió: También hay en nuestra casa paja y mucho forraje, y lugar para posar. 26 El hombre entonces se inclinó, y adoró a Jehová, 27 y dijo: Bendito sea Jehová, Dios de mi amo Abraham, que no apartó de mi amo su misericordia y su verdad, guiándome Jehová en el camino a casa de los hermanos de mi amo. 28 Y la doncella corrió, e hizo saber en casa de su madre estas cosas.

29 Y Rebeca tenía un hermano que se llamaba Labán, el cual corrió afuera hacia el hombre, a la fuente. 30 Y cuando vio el pendiente y los brazaletes en las manos de su hermana, que decía: Así me habló aquel hombre, vino a él; y he aquí que estaba con los camellos junto a la fuente. 31 Y le dijo: Ven, bendito de Jehová; ¿por qué estás fuera? He preparado la casa, y el lugar para los camellos.

32 Entonces el hombre vino a casa, y Labán desató los camellos; y les dio paja y forraje, y agua para lavar los pies de él, y los pies de los hombres que con él venían. 33 Y le pusieron delante qué comer; mas él dijo: No comeré hasta que haya dicho mi mensaje. Y él le dijo: Habla. 34 Entonces dijo: Yo soy criado de Abraham. 35 Y Jehová ha bendecido mucho a mi amo, y él se ha engrandecido; y le ha dado ovejas y vacas, plata y oro, siervos y siervas, camellos y asnos. 36 Y Sara, mujer de mi amo, dio a luz en su vejez un hijo a mi señor, quien le ha dado a él todo cuanto tiene. 37 Y mi amo me hizo jurar, diciendo: No tomarás para mi hijo mujer de las hijas de los cananeos, en cuya tierra habito; 38 sino que irás a la casa de mi padre y a mi parentela, y tomarás mujer para mi hijo. 39 Y yo dije: Quizá la mujer no querrá seguirme. 40 Entonces él me respondió: Jehová, en cuya presencia he andado, enviará su ángel contigo, y prosperará tu camino; y tomarás para mi hijo mujer de mi familia y de la casa de mi padre. 41 Entonces serás libre de mi juramento, cuando hayas llegado a mi familia; y si no te la dieren, serás libre de mi juramento. 42 Llegué, pues, hoy a la fuente, y dije: Jehová, Dios de mi señor Abraham, si tú prosperas ahora mi camino por el cual ando, 43 he aquí yo estoy junto a la fuente de agua; sea, pues, que la doncella que saliere por agua, a la cual dijere: Dame de beber, te ruego, un poco de agua de tu cántaro, 44 y ella me respondiere: Bebe tú, y también para tus camellos sacaré agua; sea esta la mujer que destinó Jehová para el hijo de mi señor. 45 Antes que acabase de hablar en mi corazón, he aquí Rebeca, que salía con su cántaro sobre su hombro; y descendió a la fuente, y sacó agua; y le dije: Te ruego que me des de beber. 46 Y bajó prontamente su cántaro de encima de sí, y dijo: Bebe, y también a tus camellos daré de beber. Y bebí, y dio también de beber a mis camellos. 47 Entonces le pregunté, y dije: ¿De quién eres hija? Y ella respondió: Hija de Betuel hijo de Nacor, que le dio a luz Milca. Entonces le puse un pendiente en su nariz, y brazaletes en sus brazos; 48 y me incliné y adoré a Jehová, y bendije a Jehová Dios de mi señor Abraham, que me había guiado por camino de verdad para tomar la hija del hermano de mi señor para su hijo. 49 Ahora, pues, si vosotros hacéis misericordia y verdad con mi señor, declarádmelo; y si no, declarádmelo; y me iré a la diestra o a la siniestra. 50 Entonces Labán y Betuel respondieron y dijeron: De Jehová ha salido esto; no podemos hablarte malo ni bueno. 51 He ahí Rebeca delante de ti; tómala y vete, y sea mujer del hijo de tu señor, como lo ha dicho Jehová. 52 Cuando el criado de Abraham oyó sus palabras, se inclinó en tierra ante Jehová. 53 Y sacó el criado alhajas de plata y alhajas de oro, y vestidos, y dio a Rebeca; también dio cosas preciosas a su hermano y a su madre. 54 Y comieron y bebieron él y los varones que venían con él, y durmieron; y levantándose de mañana, dijo: Enviadme a mi señor. 55 Entonces respondieron su hermano y su madre: Espere la doncella con nosotros a lo menos diez días, y después irá. 56 Y él les dijo: No me detengáis, ya que Jehová ha prosperado mi camino; despachadme para que me vaya a mi señor. 57 Ellos respondieron entonces: Llamemos a la doncella y preguntémosle. 58 Y llamaron a Rebeca, y le dijeron: ¿Irás tú con este varón? Y ella respondió: Sí, iré. 59 Entonces dejaron ir a Rebeca su hermana, y a su nodriza, y al criado de Abraham y a sus hombres. 60 Y bendijeron a Rebeca, y le dijeron: Hermana nuestra, sé madre de millares de millares, y posean tus descendientes la puerta de sus enemigos. 61 Entonces se levantó Rebeca y sus doncellas, y montaron en los camellos, y siguieron al hombre; y el criado tomó a Rebeca, y se fue.

62 Y venía Isaac del pozo del Viviente-que-me-ve; porque él habitaba en el Neguev. 63 Y había salido Isaac a meditar al campo, a la hora de la tarde; y alzando sus ojos miró, y he aquí los camellos que venían. 64 Rebeca también alzó sus ojos, y vio a Isaac, y descendió del camello; 65 porque había preguntado al criado: ¿Quién es este varón que viene por el campo hacia nosotros? Y el criado había respondido: Este es mi señor. Ella entonces tomó el velo, y se cubrió. 66 Entonces el criado contó a Isaac todo lo que había hecho. 67 Y la trajo Isaac a la tienda de su madre Sara, y tomó a Rebeca por mujer, y la amó; y se consoló Isaac después de la muerte de su madre.

Los descendientes de Abraham y Cetura

(1 Cr. 1.32-33)

25 Abraham tomó otra mujer, cuyo nombre era Cetura, 2 la cual le dio a luz a Zimram, Jocsán, Medán, Madián, Isbac y Súa. 3 Y Jocsán engendró a Seba y a Dedán; e hijos de Dedán fueron Asurim, Letusim y Leumim. 4 E hijos de Madián: Efa, Efer, Hanoc, Abida y Elda. Todos estos fueron hijos de Cetura. 5 Y Abraham dio todo cuanto tenía a Isaac. 6 Pero a los hijos de sus concubinas dio Abraham dones, y los envió lejos de Isaac su hijo, mientras él vivía, hacia el oriente, a la tierra oriental.

Muerte y sepultura de Abraham

7 Y estos fueron los días que vivió Abraham: ciento setenta y cinco años. 8 Y exhaló el espíritu, y murió Abraham en buena vejez, anciano y lleno de años, y fue unido a su pueblo. 9 Y lo sepultaron Isaac e Ismael sus hijos en la cueva de Macpela, en la heredad de Efrón hijo de Zohar heteo, que está enfrente de Mamre, 10 heredad que compró Abraham de los hijos de Het;(C) allí fue sepultado Abraham, y Sara su mujer. 11 Y sucedió, después de muerto Abraham, que Dios bendijo a Isaac su hijo; y habitó Isaac junto al pozo del Viviente-que-me-ve.

Los descendientes de Ismael

(1 Cr. 1.28-31)

12 Estos son los descendientes de Ismael hijo de Abraham, a quien le dio a luz Agar la egipcia, sierva de Sara; 13 estos, pues, son los nombres de los hijos de Ismael, nombrados en el orden de su nacimiento: El primogénito de Ismael, Nebaiot; luego Cedar, Adbeel, Mibsam, 14 Misma, Duma, Massa, 15 Hadar, Tema, Jetur, Nafis y Cedema. 16 Estos son los hijos de Ismael, y estos sus nombres, por sus villas y por sus campamentos; doce príncipes por sus familias. 17 Y estos fueron los años de la vida de Ismael, ciento treinta y siete años; y exhaló el espíritu Ismael, y murió, y fue unido a su pueblo. 18 Y habitaron desde Havila hasta Shur, que está enfrente de Egipto viniendo a Asiria; y murió en presencia de todos sus hermanos.

Nacimiento de Jacob y Esaú

19 Estos son los descendientes de Isaac hijo de Abraham: Abraham engendró a Isaac, 20 y era Isaac de cuarenta años cuando tomó por mujer a Rebeca, hija de Betuel arameo de Padan-aram, hermana de Labán arameo. 21 Y oró Isaac a Jehová por su mujer, que era estéril; y lo aceptó Jehová, y concibió Rebeca su mujer. 22 Y los hijos luchaban dentro de ella; y dijo: Si es así, ¿para qué vivo yo? Y fue a consultar a Jehová; 23 y le respondió Jehová:

Dos naciones hay en tu seno,

Y dos pueblos serán divididos desde tus entrañas;

El un pueblo será más fuerte que el otro pueblo,

Y el mayor servirá al menor.(D)

24 Cuando se cumplieron sus días para dar a luz, he aquí había gemelos en su vientre. 25 Y salió el primero rubio, y era todo velludo como una pelliza; y llamaron su nombre Esaú. 26 Después salió su hermano, trabada su mano al calcañar de Esaú; y fue llamado su nombre Jacob.[a] Y era Isaac de edad de sesenta años cuando ella los dio a luz.

Esaú vende su primogenitura

27 Y crecieron los niños, y Esaú fue diestro en la caza, hombre del campo; pero Jacob era varón quieto, que habitaba en tiendas. 28 Y amó Isaac a Esaú, porque comía de su caza; mas Rebeca amaba a Jacob.

29 Y guisó Jacob un potaje; y volviendo Esaú del campo, cansado, 30 dijo a Jacob: Te ruego que me des a comer de ese guiso rojo, pues estoy muy cansado. Por tanto fue llamado su nombre Edom.[b] 31 Y Jacob respondió: Véndeme en este día tu primogenitura. 32 Entonces dijo Esaú: He aquí yo me voy a morir; ¿para qué, pues, me servirá la primogenitura? 33 Y dijo Jacob: Júramelo en este día. Y él le juró, y vendió a Jacob su primogenitura.(E) 34 Entonces Jacob dio a Esaú pan y del guisado de las lentejas; y él comió y bebió, y se levantó y se fue. Así menospreció Esaú la primogenitura.

Death and Burial of Sarah

23 Now [a]Sarah lived 127 years; these were the years of the life of Sarah. 2 Sarah died in (A)Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan; and Abraham [b]came in to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her. 3 Then Abraham arose from mourning before his dead, and spoke to the (B)sons of Heth, saying, 4 “I am (C)a stranger and a foreign resident among you; (D)give me [c]a (E)burial site among you so that I may bury my dead out of my sight.” 5 The sons of Heth answered Abraham, saying to him, 6 “Hear us, my lord: you are a [d](F)mighty prince among us; bury your dead in the choicest of our graves; none of us will refuse you his grave for burying your dead.” 7 So Abraham stood up and bowed to the people of the land, the sons of Heth. 8 And he spoke with them, saying, “If [e]you are willing to let me bury my dead out of my sight, listen to me, and plead with (G)Ephron the son of Zohar for me, 9 that he may give me the cave of Machpelah which he owns, which is at the end of his field; for the full price let him give it to me in [f]your presence for [g]a burial site.” 10 Now Ephron was sitting among the sons of Heth; and Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham [h]so that the sons of Heth heard, (H)that is, all who entered the gate of his city, saying, 11 “No, my lord, listen to me; (I)I give you the field, and I give you the cave that is in it. In the presence of the sons of my people I give it to you; bury your dead.” 12 And Abraham bowed before the people of the land. 13 But he spoke to Ephron [i]so that the people of the land heard, saying, “If you will only please listen to me; I will give the price of the field, accept it from me so that I may bury my dead there.” 14 Then Ephron answered Abraham, saying to him, 15 “My lord, listen to me: a plot of land worth [j]four hundred (J)shekels of silver—what is that between me and you? So bury your dead.” 16 Abraham listened to Ephron; and Abraham (K)weighed out for Ephron the silver which he had named in the [k]presence of the sons of Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, currency acceptable to a merchant.

17 So (L)Ephron’s field, which was in Machpelah, which faced Mamre, the field and the cave which was in it, and all the trees which were in the field, that were [l]within all the confines of its border, [m]were deeded over 18 to Abraham as a possession (M)in the presence of the sons of Heth, before all who entered the gate of his city. 19 After this, Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave of the field of Machpelah facing Mamre (that is, Hebron), in the land of Canaan. 20 So the field and the cave that was in it [n]were (N)deeded over to Abraham for [o]a burial site by the sons of Heth.

A Bride for Isaac

24 Now (O)Abraham was old, advanced in age; and the Lord had (P)blessed Abraham in every way. 2 Abraham said to his servant, the oldest of his household who was in (Q)charge of all that he owned, “(R)Please place your hand under my thigh, 3 and I will make you swear by the Lord, (S)the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you (T)shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of (U)the Canaanites, among whom I live; 4 but you will go to (V)my country and to my relatives, and take a wife for my son Isaac.” 5 The servant said to him, “Suppose the woman is not willing to follow me to this land; should I take your son back to the land from where you came?” 6 Then Abraham said to him, “(W)Beware that you do not take my son back there! 7 (X)The Lord, the God of heaven, who took me from my father’s house and from the land of my birth, and who spoke to me and who swore to me, saying, ‘(Y)To your [p]descendants I will give this land’—He will send (Z)His angel ahead of you, and you will take a wife for my son from there. 8 But if the woman is not willing to follow you, then you will (AA)be free of this oath of mine; (AB)only do not take my son back there.” 9 So the servant (AC)placed his hand under the thigh of his master Abraham, and swore to him concerning this matter.

10 Then the servant took ten camels from the camels of his master, and went out with a variety of (AD)good things of his master’s in his hand; so he set out and went to [q]Mesopotamia, to (AE)the city of Nahor. 11 He made the camels kneel down outside the city by (AF)the well of water [r]when it was evening, (AG)the time when women go out to draw water. 12 And he said, “(AH)Lord, God of my master Abraham, please [s](AI)grant me success today, and show kindness to my master Abraham. 13 Behold, (AJ)I am standing by the [t]spring, and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water; 14 now may it be that the young woman to whom I say, ‘Please let down your jar so that I may drink,’ and [u]who answers, ‘Drink, and I will water your camels also’—may she be the one whom You have appointed for Your servant Isaac; and by this I will know that You have shown kindness to my master.”

Rebekah Is Chosen

15 And it came about, (AK)before he had finished speaking, that behold, (AL)Rebekah, who was born to Bethuel the son of (AM)Milcah, the wife of Abraham’s brother Nahor, came out with her jar on her shoulder. 16 The young woman was (AN)very beautiful, a virgin; no man had [v]had relations with her. She went down to the spring, filled her jar, and came up. 17 Then the servant ran to meet her, and said, “(AO)Please let me drink a little water from your jar.” 18 And (AP)she said, “Drink, my lord”; then she quickly lowered her jar to her hand, and gave him a drink. 19 Now when she had finished giving him a drink, (AQ)she said, “I will also draw water for your camels until they have finished drinking.” 20 So she quickly emptied her jar into the trough, and ran back to the well to draw, and she drew for all his camels. 21 (AR)Meanwhile, the man was taking a close look at her [w]in silence, to find out whether the Lord had made his journey successful or not.

22 When the camels had finished drinking, the man took a (AS)gold ring weighing a [x]half-shekel, and two bracelets for her [y]wrists weighing ten shekels in gold, 23 and he said, “Whose daughter are you? Please tell me, is there room for us to stay overnight at your father’s house?” 24 She said to him, “(AT)I am the daughter of Bethuel, Milcah’s son, whom she bore to Nahor.” 25 Again she said to him, “We have plenty of both straw and feed, and room to stay overnight.” 26 Then the man (AU)bowed low and worshiped the Lord. 27 And he said, “(AV)Blessed be the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who has not abandoned (AW)His kindness and His trustworthiness toward my master; as for me, (AX)the Lord has guided me in the way to the house of my master’s brothers.”

28 Then (AY)the young woman ran and told her mother’s household about these things. 29 Now Rebekah had a brother whose name was (AZ)Laban; and Laban ran outside to the man at the spring. 30 When he saw the ring and the bracelets on his sister’s [z]wrists, and when he heard the words of his sister Rebekah, saying, “[aa]This is what the man said to me,” he went to the man; and behold, he was standing by the camels at the spring. 31 And he said, “(BA)Come in, (BB)blessed of the Lord! Why do you stand outside, since (BC)I have prepared the house, and a place for the camels?” 32 So the man entered the house. Then [ab](BD)Laban unloaded the camels, and he gave straw and feed to the camels, and water to wash his feet and the feet of the men who were with him. 33 But when food was set before him to eat, he said, “I will not eat until I have stated my business.” And he said, “Speak on.” 34 So he said, “I am (BE)Abraham’s servant. 35 The Lord has greatly (BF)blessed my master, so that he has become [ac]rich; and He has given him (BG)flocks and herds, and silver and gold, and servants and slave women, and camels and donkeys. 36 Now (BH)my master’s wife Sarah bore a son to my master [ad]in her old age, and (BI)he has given him all that he has. 37 (BJ)My master made me swear, saying, ‘You shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I live; 38 but you shall go to my father’s house and to my relatives, and take a wife for my son.’ 39 Then (BK)I said to my master, ‘Suppose the woman does not follow me.’ 40 And he said to me, ‘(BL)The Lord, before whom I have (BM)walked, will send (BN)His angel with you to make your journey successful, and you will take a wife for my son from my relatives and from my father’s house; 41 (BO)then you will be free from my oath, when you come to my relatives; and if they do not give her to you, you will be free from my oath.’

42 “So (BP)I came today to the spring, and said, ‘Lord, God of my master Abraham, if now You will make my journey on which I have been going (BQ)successful; 43 behold, (BR)I am standing by the [ae]spring, and may it be that the [af]young unmarried woman who comes out to draw water, and to whom I say, “(BS)Please let me drink a little water from your jar”; 44 and she says to me, “You drink, and I will draw for your camels also”—let her be the woman whom the Lord has appointed for my master’s son.’

45 “Before I had finished (BT)speaking in my heart, behold, (BU)Rebekah came out with her jar on her shoulder, and went down to the spring and drew water, and (BV)I said to her, ‘Please let me drink.’ 46 She quickly lowered her jar from her shoulder, and said, ‘(BW)Drink, and I will water your camels also’; so I drank, and she watered the camels also. 47 (BX)Then I asked her, and said, ‘Whose daughter are you?’ And she said, ‘The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor’s son, whom Milcah bore to him’; and I put the (BY)ring on her nose, and the bracelets on her [ag]wrists. 48 And I (BZ)bowed low and worshiped the Lord, and blessed the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, (CA)who had guided me in the right way to take the daughter of my master’s brother for his son. 49 So now if you are going to [ah](CB)deal kindly and truthfully with my master, tell me; and if not, tell me now, so that I may turn to the right or the left.”

50 Then Laban and Bethuel replied, “(CC)The matter has come from the Lord; (CD)so we cannot speak to you bad or good. 51 Here is Rebekah before you, take her and go, and let her be the wife of your master’s son, as the Lord has spoken.”

52 When Abraham’s servant heard their words, he (CE)bowed himself to the ground [ai]before the Lord. 53 And the servant brought out (CF)articles of silver and articles of gold, and garments, and gave them to Rebekah; he also gave precious things to her brother and to her mother. 54 Then he and the men who were with him ate and drank and spent the night. When they got up in the morning, he said, “(CG)Send me away to my master.” 55 But her brother and her mother said, “(CH)Let the young woman stay with us a few days, say ten; afterward she may go.” 56 However, he said to them, “Do not delay me, since (CI)the Lord has prospered my way. Send me away so that I may go to my master.” 57 And they said, “We will call the young woman and [aj]ask her.” 58 Then they called Rebekah and said to her, “Will you go with this man?” And she said, “I will go.” 59 So they sent away their sister Rebekah and (CJ)her nurse with Abraham’s servant and his men. 60 And they blessed Rebekah and said to her,

“May you, our sister,
(CK)Become thousands of ten thousands,
And may (CL)your [ak]descendants possess
The gate of those who hate them.”

61 Then Rebekah got up with her female attendants, and they mounted the camels and followed the man. So the servant took Rebekah and departed.

Isaac Marries Rebekah

62 Now Isaac had come back from [al]a journey to (CM)Beer-lahai-roi; for he was living in (CN)the [am]Negev. 63 Isaac went out (CO)to [an]meditate in the field toward evening; and (CP)he raised his eyes and looked, and behold, camels were coming. 64 Rebekah raised her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she dismounted from the camel. 65 She said to the servant, “Who is that man walking in the field to meet us?” And the servant said, “He is my master.” Then she took her [ao]veil and covered herself. 66 The servant told Isaac all the things that he had done. 67 Then Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah’s tent, and (CQ)he took Rebekah, and she became his wife, and (CR)he loved her; so Isaac was comforted after (CS)his mother’s death.

Abraham’s Death

25 Now Abraham took another wife, [ap]whose name was Keturah. 2 (CT)She bore to him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. 3 Jokshan fathered Sheba and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were Asshurim, Letushim, and Leummim. 4 The sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. All of these were the sons of Keturah. 5 (CU)Now Abraham gave all that he had to Isaac; 6 but to the sons of [aq]his concubines, Abraham gave gifts while he was still living, and (CV)sent them away from his son Isaac eastward, to the land of the east.

7 These are [ar]all the years of Abraham’s life that he lived, (CW)175 years. 8 Abraham breathed his last and died (CX)at a good old age, an old man and satisfied with life; and he was (CY)gathered to his people. 9 Then his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in (CZ)the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, facing Mamre, 10 (DA)the field which Abraham purchased from the sons of Heth; there Abraham was buried with his wife Sarah. 11 It came about after the death of Abraham, that (DB)God blessed his son Isaac; and Isaac [as]lived by (DC)Beer-lahai-roi.

Descendants of Ishmael

12 Now these are the records of the generations of (DD)Ishmael, Abraham’s son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah’s slave woman, bore to Abraham; 13 and these are the names of (DE)the sons of Ishmael, by their names, [at]in the order of their birth: Nebaioth, the firstborn of Ishmael, Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam, 14 Mishma, Dumah, Massa, 15 Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah. 16 These are the sons of Ishmael and these are their names, by their villages, and by their camps; (DF)twelve princes according to their [au]tribes. 17 These are the years of the life of Ishmael, (DG)137 years; and he breathed his last and died, and was (DH)gathered to his people. 18 They [av]settled from (DI)Havilah to (DJ)Shur which is [aw]east of Egypt [ax]going toward Assyria; (DK)he [ay]settled in defiance of all his relatives.

Isaac’s Sons

19 Now these are the records of (DL)the generations of Isaac, Abraham’s son: Abraham fathered Isaac; 20 and Isaac was forty years old when he took (DM)Rebekah, the (DN)daughter of Bethuel the [az]Aramean of Paddan-aram, the (DO)sister of Laban the [ba]Aramean, to be his wife. 21 Isaac prayed to the Lord on behalf of his wife, because she was unable to have children; and (DP)the Lord [bb]answered him, and his wife Rebekah (DQ)conceived. 22 But the children struggled together within her; and she said, “If it is so, why am I in this condition?” So she went to (DR)inquire of the Lord. 23 And the Lord said to her,

“(DS)Two nations are in your womb;
(DT)And two peoples will be separated from your body;
And one people will be stronger than the other;
And (DU)the older will serve the younger.”

24 When her days leading to the delivery were at an end, behold, there were twins in her womb. 25 Now the first came out red, (DV)all over like a hairy garment; and they named him Esau. 26 Afterward his brother came out with (DW)his hand holding on to Esau’s heel, so (DX)he was named [bc]Jacob; and Isaac was (DY)sixty years old when she gave birth to them.

27 When the boys grew up, Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the field; but Jacob was a [bd]civilized man, (DZ)living in tents. 28 Now Isaac loved Esau because [be]he had (EA)a taste for game; (EB)but Rebekah loved Jacob. 29 When Jacob had cooked a (EC)stew one day, Esau came in from the field and he was exhausted; 30 and Esau said to Jacob, “Please let me have a mouthful of [bf]that red stuff there, for I am exhausted.” Therefore he was called [bg]Edom by name. 31 But Jacob said, “[bh]First sell me your (ED)birthright.” 32 Esau said, “Look, I am about to die; so of what use then is the birthright to me?” 33 And Jacob said, “[bi]First swear to me”; so he swore an oath to him, and (EE)sold his birthright to Jacob. 34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew; and he ate and drank, and got up and went on his way. So Esau despised his birthright.
