La creación

1 En el principio creó Dios los cielos y la tierra. 2 Y la tierra estaba desordenada y vacía, y las tinieblas estaban sobre la faz del abismo, y el Espíritu de Dios se movía sobre la faz de las aguas.

3 Y dijo Dios: Sea la luz;(A) y fue la luz. 4 Y vio Dios que la luz era buena; y separó Dios la luz de las tinieblas. 5 Y llamó Dios a la luz Día, y a las tinieblas llamó Noche. Y fue la tarde y la mañana un día.

6 Luego dijo Dios: Haya expansión en medio de las aguas, y separe las aguas de las aguas. 7 E hizo Dios la expansión, y separó las aguas que estaban debajo de la expansión, de las aguas que estaban sobre la expansión. Y fue así. 8 Y llamó Dios a la expansión Cielos.(B) Y fue la tarde y la mañana el día segundo.

9 Dijo también Dios: Júntense las aguas que están debajo de los cielos en un lugar, y descúbrase lo seco. Y fue así. 10 Y llamó Dios a lo seco Tierra, y a la reunión de las aguas llamó Mares. Y vio Dios que era bueno. 11 Después dijo Dios: Produzca la tierra hierba verde, hierba que dé semilla; árbol de fruto que dé fruto según su género, que su semilla esté en él, sobre la tierra. Y fue así. 12 Produjo, pues, la tierra hierba verde, hierba que da semilla según su naturaleza, y árbol que da fruto, cuya semilla está en él, según su género. Y vio Dios que era bueno. 13 Y fue la tarde y la mañana el día tercero.

14 Dijo luego Dios: Haya lumbreras en la expansión de los cielos para separar el día de la noche; y sirvan de señales para las estaciones, para días y años, 15 y sean por lumbreras en la expansión de los cielos para alumbrar sobre la tierra. Y fue así. 16 E hizo Dios las dos grandes lumbreras; la lumbrera mayor para que señorease en el día, y la lumbrera menor para que señorease en la noche; hizo también las estrellas. 17 Y las puso Dios en la expansión de los cielos para alumbrar sobre la tierra, 18 y para señorear en el día y en la noche, y para separar la luz de las tinieblas. Y vio Dios que era bueno. 19 Y fue la tarde y la mañana el día cuarto. 20 Dijo Dios: Produzcan las aguas seres vivientes, y aves que vuelen sobre la tierra, en la abierta expansión de los cielos. 21 Y creó Dios los grandes monstruos marinos, y todo ser viviente que se mueve, que las aguas produjeron según su género, y toda ave alada según su especie. Y vio Dios que era bueno. 22 Y Dios los bendijo, diciendo: Fructificad y multiplicaos, y llenad las aguas en los mares, y multiplíquense las aves en la tierra. 23 Y fue la tarde y la mañana el día quinto.

24 Luego dijo Dios: Produzca la tierra seres vivientes según su género, bestias y serpientes y animales de la tierra según su especie. Y fue así. 25 E hizo Dios animales de la tierra según su género, y ganado según su género, y todo animal que se arrastra sobre la tierra según su especie. Y vio Dios que era bueno.

26 Entonces dijo Dios: Hagamos al hombre a nuestra imagen,(C) conforme a nuestra semejanza; y señoree en los peces del mar, en las aves de los cielos, en las bestias, en toda la tierra, y en todo animal que se arrastra sobre la tierra. 27 Y creó Dios al hombre a su imagen, a imagen de Dios lo creó; varón y hembra los creó.(D) 28 Y los bendijo Dios,(E) y les dijo: Fructificad y multiplicaos; llenad la tierra, y sojuzgadla, y señoread en los peces del mar, en las aves de los cielos, y en todas las bestias que se mueven sobre la tierra.

29 Y dijo Dios: He aquí que os he dado toda planta que da semilla, que está sobre toda la tierra, y todo árbol en que hay fruto y que da semilla; os serán para comer. 30 Y a toda bestia de la tierra, y a todas las aves de los cielos, y a todo lo que se arrastra sobre la tierra, en que hay vida, toda planta verde les será para comer. Y fue así. 31 Y vio Dios todo lo que había hecho, y he aquí que era bueno en gran manera. Y fue la tarde y la mañana el día sexto.

2 Fueron, pues, acabados los cielos y la tierra, y todo el ejército de ellos. 2 Y acabó Dios en el día séptimo la obra que hizo; y reposó el día séptimo de toda la obra que hizo.(F) 3 Y bendijo Dios al día séptimo, y lo santificó,(G) porque en él reposó de toda la obra que había hecho en la creación.

El hombre en el huerto de Edén

4 Estos son los orígenes de los cielos y de la tierra cuando fueron creados, el día que Jehová Dios hizo la tierra y los cielos, 5 y toda planta del campo antes que fuese en la tierra, y toda hierba del campo antes que naciese; porque Jehová Dios aún no había hecho llover sobre la tierra, ni había hombre para que labrase la tierra, 6 sino que subía de la tierra un vapor, el cual regaba toda la faz de la tierra. 7 Entonces Jehová Dios formó al hombre del polvo de la tierra, y sopló en su nariz aliento de vida, y fue el hombre un ser viviente.(H)

8 Y Jehová Dios plantó un huerto en Edén, al oriente; y puso allí al hombre que había formado. 9 Y Jehová Dios hizo nacer de la tierra todo árbol delicioso a la vista, y bueno para comer; también el árbol de vida(I) en medio del huerto, y el árbol de la ciencia del bien y del mal. 10 Y salía de Edén un río para regar el huerto, y de allí se repartía en cuatro brazos. 11 El nombre del uno era Pisón; este es el que rodea toda la tierra de Havila, donde hay oro; 12 y el oro de aquella tierra es bueno; hay allí también bedelio y ónice. 13 El nombre del segundo río es Gihón; este es el que rodea toda la tierra de Cus. 14 Y el nombre del tercer río es Hidekel; este es el que va al oriente de Asiria. Y el cuarto río es el Éufrates.

15 Tomó, pues, Jehová Dios al hombre, y lo puso en el huerto de Edén, para que lo labrara y lo guardase. 16 Y mandó Jehová Dios al hombre, diciendo: De todo árbol del huerto podrás comer; 17 mas del árbol de la ciencia del bien y del mal no comerás; porque el día que de él comieres, ciertamente morirás.

18 Y dijo Jehová Dios: No es bueno que el hombre esté solo; le haré ayuda idónea para él. 19 Jehová Dios formó, pues, de la tierra toda bestia del campo, y toda ave de los cielos, y las trajo a Adán para que viese cómo las había de llamar; y todo lo que Adán llamó a los animales vivientes, ese es su nombre. 20 Y puso Adán nombre a toda bestia y ave de los cielos y a todo ganado del campo; mas para Adán no se halló ayuda idónea para él. 21 Entonces Jehová Dios hizo caer sueño profundo sobre Adán, y mientras este dormía, tomó una de sus costillas, y cerró la carne en su lugar. 22 Y de la costilla que Jehová Dios tomó del hombre, hizo una mujer, y la trajo al hombre. 23 Dijo entonces Adán: Esto es ahora hueso de mis huesos y carne de mi carne; esta será llamada Varona,[a] porque del varón[b] fue tomada. 24 Por tanto, dejará el hombre a su padre y a su madre, y se unirá a su mujer, y serán una sola carne.(J) 25 Y estaban ambos desnudos, Adán y su mujer, y no se avergonzaban.

Desobediencia del hombre

3 Pero la serpiente(K) era astuta, más que todos los animales del campo que Jehová Dios había hecho; la cual dijo a la mujer: ¿Conque Dios os ha dicho: No comáis de todo árbol del huerto? 2 Y la mujer respondió a la serpiente: Del fruto de los árboles del huerto podemos comer; 3 pero del fruto del árbol que está en medio del huerto dijo Dios: No comeréis de él, ni le tocaréis, para que no muráis. 4 Entonces la serpiente dijo a la mujer: No moriréis; 5 sino que sabe Dios que el día que comáis de él, serán abiertos vuestros ojos, y seréis como Dios, sabiendo el bien y el mal. 6 Y vio la mujer que el árbol era bueno para comer, y que era agradable a los ojos, y árbol codiciable para alcanzar la sabiduría; y tomó de su fruto, y comió; y dio también a su marido, el cual comió así como ella. 7 Entonces fueron abiertos los ojos de ambos, y conocieron que estaban desnudos; entonces cosieron hojas de higuera, y se hicieron delantales.

8 Y oyeron la voz de Jehová Dios que se paseaba en el huerto, al aire del día; y el hombre y su mujer se escondieron de la presencia de Jehová Dios entre los árboles del huerto. 9 Mas Jehová Dios llamó al hombre, y le dijo: ¿Dónde estás tú? 10 Y él respondió: Oí tu voz en el huerto, y tuve miedo, porque estaba desnudo; y me escondí. 11 Y Dios le dijo: ¿Quién te enseñó que estabas desnudo? ¿Has comido del árbol del que yo te mandé no comieses? 12 Y el hombre respondió: La mujer que me diste por compañera me dio del árbol, y yo comí. 13 Entonces Jehová Dios dijo a la mujer: ¿Qué es lo que has hecho? Y dijo la mujer: La serpiente me engañó,(L) y comí. 14 Y Jehová Dios dijo a la serpiente: Por cuanto esto hiciste, maldita serás entre todas las bestias y entre todos los animales del campo; sobre tu pecho andarás, y polvo comerás todos los días de tu vida. 15 Y pondré enemistad entre ti y la mujer, y entre tu simiente y la simiente suya; esta te herirá en la cabeza, y tú le herirás en el calcañar. 16 A la mujer dijo: Multiplicaré en gran manera los dolores en tus preñeces; con dolor darás a luz los hijos; y tu deseo será para tu marido,[c] y él se enseñoreará de ti. 17 Y al hombre dijo: Por cuanto obedeciste a la voz de tu mujer, y comiste del árbol de que te mandé diciendo: No comerás de él; maldita será la tierra por tu causa; con dolor comerás de ella todos los días de tu vida. 18 Espinos y cardos te producirá,(M) y comerás plantas del campo. 19 Con el sudor de tu rostro comerás el pan hasta que vuelvas a la tierra, porque de ella fuiste tomado; pues polvo eres, y al polvo volverás. 20 Y llamó Adán el nombre de su mujer, Eva,[d] por cuanto ella era madre de todos los vivientes. 21 Y Jehová Dios hizo al hombre y a su mujer túnicas de pieles, y los vistió.

22 Y dijo Jehová Dios: He aquí el hombre es como uno de nosotros, sabiendo el bien y el mal; ahora, pues, que no alargue su mano, y tome también del árbol de la vida,(N) y coma, y viva para siempre. 23 Y lo sacó Jehová del huerto de Edén, para que labrase la tierra de que fue tomado. 24 Echó, pues, fuera al hombre, y puso al oriente del huerto de Edén querubines, y una espada encendida que se revolvía por todos lados, para guardar el camino del árbol de la vida.

1 (A)In the beginning (B)God (C)created the heavens and the earth. 2 And the earth was a (D)[a]formless and desolate emptiness, and (E)darkness was over the [b]surface of the deep, and (F)the Spirit of God (G)was hovering over the [c]surface of the waters. 3 Then (H)God said, “[d]Let there be light”; and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was (I)good; and God (J)separated the light from the darkness. 5 (K)God called the light “day,” and the darkness He called “night.” And (L)there was evening and there was morning, one day.

6 Then God said, “Let there be [e]an (M)expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” 7 God made the [f]expanse, and separated (N)the waters that were below the [g]expanse from the waters (O)that were above the [h]expanse; and it was so. 8 God called the [i]expanse “heaven.” And there was evening and there was morning, a second day.

9 Then God said, “(P)Let the waters below the heavens be gathered into one place, and let (Q)the dry land appear”; and it was so. 10 And God called the dry land “earth,” and the (R)gathering of the waters He called “seas”; and God saw that it was good. 11 Then God said, “Let the earth sprout [j](S)vegetation, [k]plants yielding seed, and fruit trees on the earth bearing fruit according to [l]their kind [m]with seed in them”; and it was so. 12 The earth produced [n]vegetation, [o]plants yielding seed according to [p]their kind, and trees bearing fruit [q]with seed in them, according to [r]their kind; and God saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening and there was morning, a third day.

14 Then God said, “Let there be [s](T)lights in the [t](U)expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and they shall [u]serve as (V)signs and for (W)seasons, and for days and years; 15 and they [v]shall serve as lights in the [w]expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth”; and it was so. 16 God made the two great lights, the (X)greater light [x]to govern the day, and the lesser light [y]to govern the night; He made (Y)the stars also. 17 (Z)God placed them in the [z]expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, 18 and [aa]to (AA)govern the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness; and God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening and there was morning, a fourth day.

20 Then God said, “Let the waters [ab]teem with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth [ac]in the open [ad]expanse of the heavens.” 21 And God created (AB)the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarmed, according to their kind, and every winged bird according to its kind; and God saw that it was good. 22 God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” 23 And there was evening and there was morning, a fifth day.

24 (AC)Then God said, “Let the earth produce living creatures according to [ae]their kind: livestock and crawling things and animals of the earth according to [af]their kind”; and it was so. 25 God made the (AD)animals of the earth according to [ag]their kind, and the livestock according to [ah]their kind, and everything that crawls on the ground according to its kind; and God saw that it was good.

26 Then God said, “[ai]Let (AE)Us make (AF)mankind in Our image, according to Our likeness; and [aj]let them (AG)rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the livestock and over all the earth, and over every crawling thing that crawls on the earth.” 27 So God created man (AH)in His own image, in the image of God He created him; (AI)male and female He created them. 28 God blessed them; and God said to them, “(AJ)Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that [ak]moves on the earth.” 29 Then God said, “Behold, (AK)I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the [al]surface of all the earth, and every tree [am]which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you; 30 and (AL)to every animal of the earth and to every bird of the sky and to everything that [an]moves on the earth [ao]which has life, I have given every green plant for food”; and it was so. 31 And God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very (AM)good. 2 And so the heavens and the earth were completed, and all (AN)their heavenly [ap]lights. 2 By (AO)the seventh day God completed His work which He had done, and (AP)He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because on it He rested from all His work which God had created [aq]and made.

The Creation of Man and Woman

4 [ar](AQ)This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in (AR)the day that the Lord God made earth and heaven. 5 (AS)Now no shrub of the field was yet on the earth, and no plant of the field had yet sprouted, (AT)for the Lord God had not sent rain upon the earth, and there was no man to [as]cultivate the ground. 6 But a [at]mist used to rise from the earth and water the whole [au]surface of the ground. 7 Then the Lord God formed the man of (AU)dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and the (AV)man became a living [av]person. 8 The Lord God planted a (AW)garden toward the east, in Eden; and there He placed the man whom He had formed. 9 Out of the ground the Lord God caused (AX)every tree to grow that is pleasing to the sight and good for food; (AY)the tree of life was also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

10 Now a (AZ)river [aw]flowed out of Eden to water the garden; and from there it divided and became four [ax]rivers. 11 The name of the first is Pishon; it [ay]flows around the whole land of (BA)Havilah, where there is gold. 12 The gold of that land is good; the bdellium and the onyx stone are there as well. 13 The name of the second river is Gihon; it [az]flows around the whole land of Cush. 14 The name of the third river is [ba](BB)Tigris; it [bb]flows east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the [bc](BC)Euphrates.

15 Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to cultivate it and tend it. 16 The Lord God (BD)commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may freely eat; 17 but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not [bd]eat, for on the day that you eat from it (BE)you will certainly die.”

18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; (BF)I will make him a helper [be]suitable for him.” 19 (BG)And out of the ground the Lord God formed every animal of the field and every bird of the sky, and (BH)brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all the livestock, and to the birds of the sky, and to every animal of the field, but for [bf]Adam there was not found (BI)a helper [bg]suitable for him. 21 So the Lord God caused a (BJ)deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh at that place. 22 And the Lord God [bh]fashioned into a woman (BK)the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man. 23 Then the man said,

“(BL)At last this is bone of my bones,
And flesh of my flesh;
[bi]She shall be called [bj]‘woman,’
Because [bk]she was taken out of [bl]man.”

24 (BM)For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh. 25 (BN)And the man and his wife were both naked, but they were not ashamed.

The Fall of Mankind

3 Now (BO)the serpent was more cunning than any animal of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God really said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden’?” 2 The woman said to the serpent, “(BP)From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; 3 but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.’” 4 (BQ)The serpent said to the woman, “You certainly will not die! 5 For God knows that on the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and (BR)you will [bm]become like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 (BS)When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took some of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they (BT)knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves waist coverings.

8 Now they heard the sound of (BU)the Lord God walking in the garden in the [bn]cool of the day, (BV)and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 Then the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, “(BW)Where are you?” 10 He said, “(BX)I heard the sound of You in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself.” 11 And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree from which I commanded you not to eat?” 12 (BY)The man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me some of the fruit of the tree, and I ate.” 13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” And the woman said, “(BZ)The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” 14 Then the Lord God said to the serpent,

“(CA)Because you have done this,
Cursed are you more than all the livestock,
And more than any animal of the field;
On your belly you shall go,
And (CB)dust you shall eat
All the days of your life;
15 And I will [bo](CC)make enemies
Of you and the woman,
And of your [bp]offspring and her [bq]Descendant;
(CD)He shall [br]bruise you on the head,
And you shall bruise Him on the heel.”

16 To the woman He said,

“I will greatly multiply
Your pain [bs]in childbirth,
In pain you shall (CE)deliver children;
Yet your desire will be for your husband,
And (CF)he shall rule over you.”

17 Then to Adam He said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree about which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat from it’;

(CG)Cursed is the ground because of you;
(CH)With [bt]hard labor you shall eat from it
All the days of your life.
18 Both thorns and thistles it shall grow for you;
Yet you shall eat the [bu]plants of the field;
19 By the sweat of your face
You shall eat bread,
Until you (CI)return to the ground,
Because (CJ)from it you were taken;
For you are dust,
And to dust you shall return.”

20 Now the man named his wife [bv](CK)Eve, because she was the mother of all the living. 21 And the Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and clothed them.

22 Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of (CL)Us, knowing good and evil; and now, he might reach out with his hand, and take fruit also from (CM)the tree of life, and eat, and live forever”— 23 therefore the Lord God sent him out of the Garden of Eden, to cultivate the ground from which he was taken. 24 So (CN)He drove the man out; and at the (CO)east of the Garden of Eden He stationed the (CP)cherubim and the flaming sword which turned every direction to guard the way to (CQ)the tree of life.
