Genesis 4:9-16

New International Version

⁹Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?”^(A)

“I don’t know,^(B)” he replied. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”

¹⁰The Lord said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground.^(C) ¹¹Now you are under a curse^(D) and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. ¹²When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you.^(E) You will be a restless wanderer^(F) on the earth.^(G)”

¹³Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is more than I can bear. ¹⁴Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence;^(H) I will be a restless wanderer on the earth,^(I) and whoever finds me will kill me.”^(J)

¹⁵But the Lord said to him, “Not so^[a]; anyone who kills Cain^(K) will suffer vengeance^(L) seven times over.^(M)” Then the Lord put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him. ¹⁶So Cain went out from the Lord’s presence^(N) and lived in the land of Nod,^[b] east of Eden.^(O)

For the director of music. A psalm of David. When the prophet Nathan came to him after David had committed adultery with Bathsheba.^(A)

¹Have mercy^(B) on me, O God,
    according to your unfailing love;^(C)
according to your great compassion^(D)
    blot out^(E) my transgressions.^(F)
²Wash away^(G) all my iniquity
    and cleanse^(H) me from my sin.

³For I know my transgressions,
    and my sin is always before me.^(I)
⁴Against you, you only, have I sinned^(J)
    and done what is evil in your sight;^(K)
so you are right in your verdict
    and justified when you judge.^(L)
⁵Surely I was sinful^(M) at birth,^(N)
    sinful from the time my mother conceived me.
⁶Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb;
    you taught me wisdom^(O) in that secret place.^(P)

⁷Cleanse^(Q) me with hyssop,^(R) and I will be clean;
    wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.^(S)
⁸Let me hear joy and gladness;^(T)

¹⁰Create in me a pure heart,^(X) O God,
    and renew a steadfast spirit within me.^(Y)

¹²Restore to me the joy of your salvation^(AC)

¹⁴Deliver me^(AI) from the guilt of bloodshed,^(AJ) O God,

¹⁵Open my lips, Lord,^(AM)
    and my mouth will declare your praise.
¹⁶You do not delight in sacrifice,^(AN) or I would bring it;
    you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.
¹⁷My sacrifice,^(AO) O God, is^[b] a broken spirit;
    a broken and contrite heart^(AP)
    you, God, will not despise.

¹⁸May it please you to prosper Zion,^(AQ)
    to build up the walls of Jerusalem.^(AR)
¹⁹Then you will delight in the sacrifices of the righteous,^(AS)
    in burnt offerings^(AT) offered whole;
    then bulls^(AU) will be offered on your altar.

Light and Darkness, Sin and Forgiveness

⁵This is the message we have heard^(A) from him and declare to you: God is light;^(B) in him there is no darkness at all. ⁶If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness,^(C) we lie and do not live out the truth.^(D) ⁷But if we walk in the light,^(E) as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all^[a] sin.^(F)

⁸If we claim to be without sin,^(G) we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.^(H) ⁹If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins^(I) and purify us from all unrighteousness.^(J) ¹⁰If we claim we have not sinned,^(K) we make him out to be a liar^(L) and his word is not in us.^(M)
