14 And Judah and his brethren came to Joseph's house; for he was yet there: and they fell before him on the ground.

15 And Joseph said unto them, What deed is this that ye have done? wot ye not that such a man as I can certainly divine?

16 And Judah said, What shall we say unto my lord? what shall we speak? or how shall we clear ourselves? God hath found out the iniquity of thy servants: behold, we are my lord's servants, both we, and he also with whom the cup is found.

17 And he said, God forbid that I should do so: but the man in whose hand the cup is found, he shall be my servant; and as for you, get you up in peace unto your father.

18 Then Judah came near unto him, and said, Oh my lord, let thy servant, I pray thee, speak a word in my lord's ears, and let not thine anger burn against thy servant: for thou art even as Pharaoh.

19 My lord asked his servants, saying, Have ye a father, or a brother?

20 And we said unto my lord, We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loveth him.

21 And thou saidst unto thy servants, Bring him down unto me, that I may set mine eyes upon him.

22 And we said unto my lord, The lad cannot leave his father: for if he should leave his father, his father would die.

23 And thou saidst unto thy servants, Except your youngest brother come down with you, ye shall see my face no more.

24 And it came to pass when we came up unto thy servant my father, we told him the words of my lord.

25 And our father said, Go again, and buy us a little food.

26 And we said, We cannot go down: if our youngest brother be with us, then will we go down: for we may not see the man's face, except our youngest brother be with us.

27 And thy servant my father said unto us, Ye know that my wife bare me two sons:

28 And the one went out from me, and I said, Surely he is torn in pieces; and I saw him not since:

29 And if ye take this also from me, and mischief befall him, ye shall bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.

30 Now therefore when I come to thy servant my father, and the lad be not with us; seeing that his life is bound up in the lad's life;

31 It shall come to pass, when he seeth that the lad is not with us, that he will die: and thy servants shall bring down the gray hairs of thy servant our father with sorrow to the grave.

32 For thy servant became surety for the lad unto my father, saying, If I bring him not unto thee, then I shall bear the blame to my father for ever.

33 Now therefore, I pray thee, let thy servant abide instead of the lad a bondman to my lord; and let the lad go up with his brethren.

34 For how shall I go up to my father, and the lad be not with me? lest peradventure I see the evil that shall come on my father.

45 Then Joseph could not refrain himself before all them that stood by him; and he cried, Cause every man to go out from me. And there stood no man with him, while Joseph made himself known unto his brethren.

And he wept aloud: and the Egyptians and the house of Pharaoh heard.

And Joseph said unto his brethren, I am Joseph; doth my father yet live? And his brethren could not answer him; for they were troubled at his presence.

And Joseph said unto his brethren, Come near to me, I pray you. And they came near. And he said, I am Joseph your brother, whom ye sold into Egypt.

Now therefore be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that ye sold me hither: for God did send me before you to preserve life.

For these two years hath the famine been in the land: and yet there are five years, in the which there shall neither be earing nor harvest.

And God sent me before you to preserve you a posterity in the earth, and to save your lives by a great deliverance.

So now it was not you that sent me hither, but God: and he hath made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house, and a ruler throughout all the land of Egypt.

Haste ye, and go up to my father, and say unto him, Thus saith thy son Joseph, God hath made me lord of all Egypt: come down unto me, tarry not:

10 And thou shalt dwell in the land of Goshen, and thou shalt be near unto me, thou, and thy children, and thy children's children, and thy flocks, and thy herds, and all that thou hast:

11 And there will I nourish thee; for yet there are five years of famine; lest thou, and thy household, and all that thou hast, come to poverty.

12 And, behold, your eyes see, and the eyes of my brother Benjamin, that it is my mouth that speaketh unto you.

13 And ye shall tell my father of all my glory in Egypt, and of all that ye have seen; and ye shall haste and bring down my father hither.

14 And he fell upon his brother Benjamin's neck, and wept; and Benjamin wept upon his neck.

15 Moreover he kissed all his brethren, and wept upon them: and after that his brethren talked with him.

14 Joseph was still in the house(A) when Judah(B) and his brothers came in, and they threw themselves to the ground before him.(C) 15 Joseph said to them, “What is this you have done?(D) Don’t you know that a man like me can find things out by divination?(E)

16 “What can we say to my lord?(F)” Judah(G) replied. “What can we say? How can we prove our innocence?(H) God has uncovered your servants’(I) guilt. We are now my lord’s slaves(J)—we ourselves and the one who was found to have the cup.(K)

17 But Joseph said, “Far be it from me to do such a thing!(L) Only the man who was found to have the cup will become my slave.(M) The rest of you, go back to your father in peace.”(N)

18 Then Judah(O) went up to him and said: “Pardon your servant, my lord,(P) let me speak a word to my lord. Do not be angry(Q) with your servant, though you are equal to Pharaoh himself. 19 My lord asked his servants,(R) ‘Do you have a father or a brother?’(S) 20 And we answered, ‘We have an aged father, and there is a young son born to him in his old age.(T) His brother is dead,(U) and he is the only one of his mother’s sons left, and his father loves him.’(V)

21 “Then you said to your servants,(W) ‘Bring him down to me so I can see him for myself.’(X) 22 And we said to my lord,(Y) ‘The boy cannot leave his father; if he leaves him, his father will die.’(Z) 23 But you told your servants, ‘Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you will not see my face again.’(AA) 24 When we went back to your servant my father,(AB) we told him what my lord(AC) had said.(AD)

25 “Then our father said, ‘Go back and buy a little more food.’(AE) 26 But we said, ‘We cannot go down. Only if our youngest brother is with us will we go. We cannot see the man’s face unless our youngest brother is with us.’(AF)

27 “Your servant my father(AG) said to us, ‘You know that my wife bore me two sons.(AH) 28 One of them went away from me, and I said, “He has surely been torn to pieces.”(AI) And I have not seen him since.(AJ) 29 If you take this one from me too and harm comes to him, you will bring my gray head down to the grave(AK) in misery.’(AL)

30 “So now, if the boy is not with us when I go back to your servant my father,(AM) and if my father, whose life is closely bound up with the boy’s life,(AN) 31 sees that the boy isn’t there, he will die.(AO) Your servants(AP) will bring the gray head of our father down to the grave(AQ) in sorrow. 32 Your servant guaranteed the boy’s safety to my father. I said, ‘If I do not bring him back to you, I will bear the blame before you, my father, all my life!’(AR)

33 “Now then, please let your servant remain here as my lord’s slave(AS) in place of the boy,(AT) and let the boy return with his brothers. 34 How can I go back to my father if the boy is not with me? No! Do not let me see the misery(AU) that would come on my father.”(AV)

Joseph Makes Himself Known

45 Then Joseph could no longer control himself(AW) before all his attendants, and he cried out, “Have everyone leave my presence!”(AX) So there was no one with Joseph when he made himself known to his brothers. And he wept(AY) so loudly that the Egyptians heard him, and Pharaoh’s household heard about it.(AZ)

Joseph said to his brothers, “I am Joseph! Is my father still living?”(BA) But his brothers were not able to answer him,(BB) because they were terrified at his presence.(BC)

Then Joseph said to his brothers, “Come close to me.”(BD) When they had done so, he said, “I am your brother Joseph, the one you sold into Egypt!(BE) And now, do not be distressed(BF) and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here,(BG) because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you.(BH) For two years now there has been famine(BI) in the land, and for the next five years there will be no plowing and reaping. But God sent me ahead of you to preserve for you a remnant(BJ) on earth and to save your lives by a great deliverance.[a](BK)

“So then, it was not you who sent me here, but God.(BL) He made me father(BM) to Pharaoh, lord of his entire household and ruler of all Egypt.(BN) Now hurry(BO) back to my father and say to him, ‘This is what your son Joseph says: God has made me lord of all Egypt. Come down to me; don’t delay.(BP) 10 You shall live in the region of Goshen(BQ) and be near me—you, your children and grandchildren, your flocks and herds, and all you have.(BR) 11 I will provide for you there,(BS) because five years of famine(BT) are still to come. Otherwise you and your household and all who belong to you will become destitute.’(BU)

12 “You can see for yourselves, and so can my brother Benjamin,(BV) that it is really I who am speaking to you.(BW) 13 Tell my father about all the honor accorded me in Egypt(BX) and about everything you have seen. And bring my father down here quickly.(BY)

14 Then he threw his arms around his brother Benjamin and wept, and Benjamin(BZ) embraced him,(CA) weeping. 15 And he kissed(CB) all his brothers and wept over them.(CC) Afterward his brothers talked with him.(CD)
