⁷ Now the sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard about it; and the men were grieved, and they were very angry because he had done a ^[a](A)disgraceful thing in Israel by ^[b]sleeping with Jacob’s daughter, for such a thing ought not to be done.

²⁹ ‘^(A)Do not profane your daughter by making her a prostitute, so that the land does not fall into prostitution, and the land does not become full of outrageous sin.

^9 (A)Also the daughter of any priest, if she profanes herself by prostitution, she profanes her father; she shall be burned with fire.

¹⁷ “^(A)None of the daughters of Israel shall be a cult prostitute, ^(B)nor shall any of the sons of Israel be a cult prostitute. ¹⁸ You shall not bring the earnings of a prostitute or the money for a ^[a](C)dog into the house of the Lord your God as payment for any vowed offering, because both of these are an abomination to the Lord your God.

⁵ But the ^[a](A)citizens of Gibeah rose up against me and surrounded the house at night, ^[b]threatening me. They intended to kill me; instead, they ^(B)raped my concubine so that she died. ⁶ And I ^(C)took hold of my concubine and cut her in pieces, and sent her throughout the land of Israel’s inheritance; for ^(D)they have committed an outrageous sin and vile act in Israel. ⁷ Behold, all you sons of Israel, ^(E)give your ^[c]response and advice here.”

⁸ Then all the people rose up as one person, saying, “Not one of us will go to his tent, nor will any of us go home. ⁹ But now this is the thing which we will do to Gibeah; we will go up against it by lot. ¹⁰ And we will take ten men out of a hundred throughout the tribes of Israel, and a hundred out of a thousand, and a thousand out of ten thousand to ^[d]supply provisions for the people, so that when they come to ^[e]Gibeah of Benjamin, they may ^[f]punish them for all the vile sin that they have committed in Israel.”

¹² But she said to him, “No, my brother, do not violate me, for ^(A)such a thing is not done in Israel; do not do this ^(B)disgraceful sin! ¹³ As for me, where could I ^[a]get rid of my shame? And as for you, you will be like one of the ^[b]fools in Israel. Now then, please speak to the king, for ^(C)he will not ^[c]withhold me from you.”
